There are few artists like Alice Drueding and Joe Scorsone. They do not paint landscapes, write novels or sculpt clay. They make posters.

It is an art genre often overlooked in America because of its association with commercial use, but the poster is the ultimate expression of graphic design. In a single image, a poster must convey a complex idea in a way that is concise, visually pleasing and persuasive. Since 1986, the posters of Drueding and Scorsone have defined the genre.

The 20th Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition represents nearly 150 posters by more than 70 renowned artists from around the world. Some are announcements for European art shows. Some are symbolic metaphors for a poignant message.

Others present crafted messages with such beautiful composition that they transfix you in place.

While already established in Europe and Asia, poster exhibits are basically unheard of in the Western Hemisphere. The CIIPE is the largest and most prestigious of its kind in North America.

“To be the honor laureates is a really high recognition in the field overall,” Drueding said. “This is an important exhibition nationally and internationally. It’s an extremely high honor.”

Kefalas discusses cracks in the mental health system

Mental health came prominently into Fort Collins’ rhetoric on Saturday, coinciding with its prominence surfacing once more at the national level last week.

Colorado Senator John Kefalas, along with Joann Ginal and Jeni Arndt, house representatives for Colorado, hosted a community meeting entitled “Cracks in the Mental Health System.”

The meeting was held Saturday morning at the Harmony Library.

Arndt, Ginal and Kefalas encouraged the audience to call Senator Cory Gardner’s office.

Constituents are being encouraged to call their representatives nationally after a new bill was announced that would repeal the Affordable Care Act. The Affordable Care Act helps to provide mental health and substance abuse disorder care nationwide. Kefalas said ObamaCare helped put money into mental health care and the current political state is not so much one of resistance, as one of complications.

The meeting was broken into two parts, a documentary screening and a question and answer session to follow. The documentary, “Going Sane,” focused on encouraging parents and families to seek what is commonly known as evidence-based practice.

Evidence-based practice utilizes evidence from research in the field in combination with the expertise of the therapist or provider, according to Duke University. The idea of evidence-based practice is already used by doctors who treat cancer, for example.

Lisa Sabey, the producer of “Going Sane,” was part of the

meeting and facilitated the question and answer session.

Community member Patrice Marqi said evidence-based practice has been a topic of conversation in Fort Collins for 20 years.

Evidence-based practice can include therapy where the family is either included in the sessions or is informed of what the sessions entail.

“Family needs to be integrated whenever possible,” Sabey said.

Arndt acknolwedged families for individuals with any kind of illness, mental or otherwise, are not oftentimes kind and can even be violent.

“I would love to think everyone with a (disability comes from a nice family),” Arndt said.

Robert Blair worked on the film and is an associate professor of social work at New Mexico State University. Blair agreed with Sabey on the importance involving parents and families in the treatment of the individual.

“We believe (violent parents) are the minority,” Blair said.

Sabey said mental health should be held to the same regulatory standards the medical field is.

“It’s really easy to look at the art side (of therapy),” Blair said.

“The science side (is hard).”

Kefalas said he is exploring training for social work undergraduate and graduate students, in order to bridge that gap between the idea of the art and the science sides of therapy.

Community member Alan Burd responded to the film and said it was adrenaline-inducing. “(The) inclusions of homosexuality sandwiched between autisim and schizophrenia ... I think it undermines (the message of) your movie,” Burd said.

Senator Ginal thanked Burd for his input and echoed sentiments of audience members when she asked about the relationship of profit and pharmaceutical companies to mental health care. Multiple audience members said profit needed to be taken out of the equation, and a majority of the room clapped after Ginal brought up the issue of said pharmaceutical companies.

“We (in Fort Collins) do the best job we can to try to work together and collaborate,” Kefalas said.

Construction underway for new Warner College building

The new addition will be named after Michael Smith, who contributed $3.7 million to the project. While the majority of the funding comes from student fees, Smith’s gift was a critical final donation, according to Rob Novak, director of communications for the Warner College of Natural Resources.

A centerpiece for the expansion will be a new home for the WCNR Student Success Center.

Located on the first floor, it will be a visitor’s first encounter.

“As you come into the building you’ll be able to see the student success center right off the bat,” Novak said. “It will be a welcome desk for the college where people can ask for directions and where students can work with academic affairs and career services.”

Novak said it will also be a place that showcases what the college has to offer to prospective students. As WCNR continues to grow, new teaching labs will provide room to accommodate an increase in students.

“We are really trying to centralize the specimen labs we have throughout the college,” Novak said.

These include labs that focus on dendrology, geology or fish and wildlife studies. Novak said a new feature will allow teaching assistants to display specimens from labs to be viewed by students in various study locations, even after their class is over.

Other changes include the consolidation of the entire WCNR administrative staff to one location, a new home for the Center for Collaborative Conservation, several meeting rooms and a garage-style door on the fourth floor that will open to let in fresh air and pro-

Novak said that there is nothing wrong with the current building but the Warner College is outgrowing the space.

Institutional research data indicates that there are 2,168 total students in the Warner College.

This makes the WCNR one of the smallest departments student-wise but it has been steadily growing over the years.

Campus Architect Mike Rush said he believes the new design will better reflect the values of the Warner College.

“It was important to have a main entry that spoke to the mission of the college and (includes) natural materials in connection with the outdoors.”

Novak said the addition will try blend in with the blocky architectural look of the current building: a style called brutalism. It will also incorporate exterior wood under the soffit and around a central beam, giving it a look unique to the college.

Creating a building that is sustainable was also a central goal for the new addition. Joy Wagner, the project manager at the Institute for the Built Environment, has been working to increase sustainability and comply with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, standards.

Wagner said the goal is to achieve a LEED silver rating, a

rank that lies below the gold, and platinum awards. Some of the strategies they are trying to implement include water efficient restrooms, day-lighting and the use of sustainable wood products and construction materials.

Additional work to improve their LEED rating has to do with making a comfortable work environment for occupants of the building, according to Wagner. This could include work areas where individuals have control of their own light and temperature.

“People feel better in a space that they feel like they can control a little bit,” Wagner said.

A challenge that could limit the ability to reach gold and platinum standards comes from the fact that they are adding to the existing natural resource building. Wagner said this makes it difficult to reach higher energy efficiency standards, a heavily weighted category to LEED. Taking these goals and making them a reality now comes down to Pinkard Construction and 4240 Architecture, firms that have done work for CSU before. Rush said that these firms were able to satisfy most of the requirements set forth in the University’s request for proposal: a set of documents outlining the project’s criteria.

Novak said students can expect construction until the opening next fall but the construction site will not expand and further increase congestion in that area. Novak said once complete, the Michael Smith Natural Resources building will be a prominent feature near the center of campus.

“For us, we want to make sure it serves the students well and we also think it will make a statement that Warner is an important part of the university and community,” Novak said.

When domestic violence offenders are required to relinquish their guns, instead of simply being barred from owning firearms, the risk that those offenders may kill their partners goes down, a new study finds.

The paper, described in the Annals of Internal Medicine, highlights a simple method for lowering the risk women face of being killed by an intimate partner: Enforce the laws already in place.

Each year, the study authors point out, more than 1,800 people are killed by their intimate partners, current or former spouses or people they dated, for example. About half of those killings are carried out with a gun.

Roughly 85 percent of those victims are women. In fact, nearly half of the women killed in the U.S. each year are killed not by a stranger, but by an intimate partner.

Firearms play a significant role in these domestic violence homicides _ a pattern that the law has tried to address for decades. The 1994 Violence Against Women Act banned gun ownership for people with permanent restraining orders because of intimate-partner violence, or IPV. And a 1968 law banning gun ownership for those with an IPV-related felony was extended to include misdemeanors in 1996.

In theory, these laws should be enough; in practice, they’re hard to enforce on the federal level. So state laws have sprung up to fill in the gap.

The problem is, the state laws were modeled after the federal law, which has a gaping loophole: While offenders are not allowed to own a gun, they aren’t explicitly compelled by the law to give up any guns they already have.

Recently, some states have begun to change those laws, putting in additional requirements that IPV offenders actively relinquish their firearms.

California is among those states, along with Hawaii, Massachusetts, New York, Wisconsin, North Carolina and several others.

But do any of the policies in this state-by-state patchwork quilt of gun legislation actually work? It’s been hard to tell because there hasn’t been much research on the effectiveness of different gun laws, said senior author Michael Siegel, an epidemiologist at the Boston University School of Public Health.

Without a clear blueprint for what works and what doesn’t, it’s hard to craft good policy.

“It’s not so easy to say to states, ‘OK, here’s a set of policies that we need to pass, and if you pass these, it’ll work,’” Siegel said. “And I think the reason for that is that the NRA (National Rifle Association) has successfully blocked federal research on gun control for so many years.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has done minimal research on gun control since the 1997 Dickey Amendment, which banned the use of federal funds to “advocate for or promote gun control.” While not explicitly banning gun violence research, this provision coupled with budget appropriations has had a chilling effect on such work at the CDC. (Former Republican Congressman Jay Dickey from Arkansas, who authored the amendment and died earlier this year, later said he had deep regrets about the legislation and called for more gun-violence research.)

For this study, Siegel and his colleagues decided to use this patchwork of policies as a natural experiment. They compared the intimate-partner homicide rates from 1991 to 2015 for each state, using the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reports database. They looked at which states simply banned gun possession for people under IPV-related restraining orders, and which ones went a step further and required those people to actively turn in their firearms. They adjusted for such factors as each state’s violent crime rate (minus homicide), the incarceration rate, the percentage of gun-owning households, the poverty rate, the unemployment rate and the income level.

In states that simply banned gun possession, the gun-related intimate-partner homicide rate did not drop by a statistically significant amount. But in those that required offenders to surrender their guns, that rate dropped by a full 14 percent.

This drove the overall intimate-partner homicide rate down by 9.7 percent, which indicated that the laws really did seem to have a significant effect. Would-be offenders weren’t simply resorting to other means of killing now that they did not have a gun.

“This is actually saving people’s lives,” Siegel said.

DeVos replaces Obama-era guidelines for handling sexual assault on campus

WASHINGTON - Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Friday rescinded controversial Obama-era guidelines that had prodded colleges and universities to more aggressively, critics said too aggressively, investigate campus sexual assaults.

The decision was not a surprise given DeVos’ past criticism of her predecessor’s policy. But it left women’s groups worried that victims of sexual assault will lose protections or face intimidation to remain silent.

Supporters of DeVos said the change would lead to greater consideration of the rights of those accused of sexual assaults.

The department said it was withdrawing the Obama administration’s policy, which had been spelled out in a 2011 letter, because of criticism that it placed too much pressure on school administrators, favored alleged victims and lacked due process for those accused.

Obama’s Education secretary issued the guidelines under a federal law designed to prevent discrimination on the basis of sex and gender, known as Title IX, and indicated federal funding could be at risk if the department’s recommendations were not followed.

“Those documents have led to the deprivation of rights for many students, both accused students denied fair process and victims denied an adequate resolution of their complaints,” the department’s acting assistant secretary for civil rights, Candice Jackson, said in a letter Friday.

Advocates for victims complained that DeVos and the department had not spent enough time listening to survivors.

“Survivors are now scared to utilize their schools’ process,” said Sage Carson, project manager for the advocacy organization Know Your IX. Carson, who is a survivor herself, said she would have dropped out of school after her assault if not for the Obama guidelines that ensured she didn’t have to see her respondent on campus. The decision to rescind those guidelines was alarming and made too quickly, she said.

The department released a new, temporary question-and-answer statement, replacing one issued by the Obama administration in 2014, to ad-

vise colleges and universities about how their responsibilities have changed. It emphasizes providing the same information, rights and opportunities to both parties in a sexual assault investigation.

David P. Shapiro, a San Diego-based criminal defense attorney who has advocated for people accused of sexual assault, said he welcomed the changes as a way to consider everyone’s rights equally. “In order to beef up the protections for the accused, it doesn’t need to be at the expense of the accuser,” he said.

Among other things, the new guidelines allow schools to facilitate an informal resolution process if both parties agree, rather than adjudicate every case, as previously required.

The letter also rescinds any suggested timeline for investigations. The former guidance recommended schools reach a decision in about 60 days, something critics said put too much pressure on administrators, particularly in cases that involved scant or conflicting evidence.

The guidelines still require each school to have a coordinator and to report all incidents of sexual assault.

And the new guidance gives schools more flexibility in deciding what standard of evidence to apply in investigations. The previous guidelines suggested using a “preponderance of evidence,” meaning that decision-makers must only be more than 50 percent sure that an assault occurred. Critics said a higher standard should be used, such as “clear and convincing evidence” of an assault, which will now be an option.

Carly Mee, a staff attorney with SurvJustice, said the preponderance of evidence standard put both parties on “equal footing.” Raising the standard of evidence would tip the scales in favor of those who have been accused because there are not usually any witnesses and very little direct evidence of the assault.

“It’s going to be a lot harder for (survivors) to come forward if they know they don’t have the same protections in place,” she said.

The guidelines also make the appeals process more flexible, allowing schools to decide if they will offer the option to appeal to both parties involved or just to the person who has been accused.

“If a survivor goes through

a process and feels the outcome is unjust, they don’t have any options,” said Neena Chaudhry, director of education and senior counsel at the National Women’s Law Center.

Although the department rescinded existing guidelines, schools are still able to use their system in place if they choose, and it is expected many will.

Chaudhry said that is the “most legally sound way to move forward” since the laws behind the original guidance are still in place.

“If a survivor goes through a process and feels the outcome is unjust, they don’t have any options.”

Advocates are hopeful student activism, which is largely credited with putting pressure on the Obama administration to more strongly enforce protections for survivors, will en-

courage schools to continue following the 2011 guidance on a voluntary basis.

Some states, including California, have adopted the policies as part of their own state law, meaning schools in those states will follow the same procedures regardless of federal relaxation.

Janet Napolitano, president of the University of California system, said earlier this week that her campuses have redone how cases are investigated and adjudicated to make sure the underlying policies remain in place. “We all share the concern they’re going to backtrack,” she said.

USC Provost Michael Quick also reaffirmed the university’s commitment to fighting sexual misconduct. “It simply cannot be overstated: This university will not tolerate sexual misconduct in any form,” he said in a statement.

Some of those accused of sexual assaults have complained that the system was stacked against them, often leading to disciplinary action or even expulsion. Robert Shibley, executive director of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, which advocates for people accused of sexual assault, said

the new guidelines were more “conscious” of due-process rights than previously. It gives more freedom to colleges, he said, to focus on being fair to all students.

“Colleges should be accountable to their students and faculty members, and justify, if they’re going to deny someone a protection , why it’s better that they shouldn’t have that protection,” he said. “It was good to see the department give some guidance as to individual due process protections.”

The revised guidelines are only temporary, as the department collects comment from the public and continues to meet with groups from all sides of the debate before issuing final guidance after the formal review period. The 2011 and 2014 guidance did not go through a notice and comment process, which many say led to confusion about how to properly follow the suggestions.

Echoing what she said at a conference earlier this month to announce the formal review process, DeVos said in a statement Friday: “The era of rule by letter is over.”

Radical animal rights groups give ethical ones a bad name Leta McWilliams @LetaMcWilliams

Denver Baby Animal Save, an animal rights group located in Colorado recently stole three chickens from Long Shadow Farm. The farm is located in Berthoud, CO, less than 20 miles from Fort Collins. Denver Baby Animal Save stole the chickens in order to save them from being abused at the farm, and from inevitably being slaughtered.

Acts like this from radical animal rights groups are giving ethical animal rights groups a bad reputation, and are putting the humane farms at risk.

Though Long Shadow Farm has a reputation for slaughtering animals, they also have a reputation for treating the animals humanely. Their animals are free-range and treated with care.

The family run farm is known for rescuing animals, inviting kids to come learn about the animals, and they also participated in Downs on the Farm. They teach classes on how to humanely slaughter the animals, and also sell cheese and eggs to locals.

“Because we are so welcoming, we were an easy target,” said Kristen Ramey, one of the

farms owners. “The disappointing thing is that they are hurting other people, other animal rights groups and vegetarians and vegans, that are actually fighting for something good.”

Denver Baby Animal Save didn’t just steal from the property, but they did it by misleading the eight-year-old girl who lives on the farm. They asked her to show them her chickens, and when she turned her back they ran off with three of them.

After they stole the chickens, they posted a video on Facebook explaining their motives.

They’ve also posted many other videos explaining their other protests, showing their vigils and their songs of liberation.

Denver Baby Animal Save claimed they took the chickens in order to save them from being treated poorly. However, hens are very susceptible to stress and illness if they’re not kept in the right environment. If Denver Baby Animal Save doesn’t care for them correctly, it can be detrimental to their health. Instead of being kept in a happy and healthy environment on their free-range farm, they’re in an environment that can cause severe physical damage.

Stealing animals from Long Shadow Farm and others like it is putting all animal rights groups’ reputations at risk. Not only was it wrong, it was breaking the law.

Also, Animal consumption is never going to stop. Targeting farms that care for their animals instead of farms that abuse them is going to force the humane

farms to disappear. Free-range farms should be the last target on any animal rights groups’ list because they are trying to make animal consumption as cruelty-free as possible.

Because of the popularity this incident is getting, people might associate these acts with animal rights groups that are trying to stop chickens from being abused. Many animal rights groups are actually trying to stop the abuse of animals, such as keeping animals out of broiler sheds and battery cages, both tools that conserve space and abuse the animals inside. Stealing the animals from happy and healthy environments is going to do nothing to stop animal cruelty.

There are many animal rights groups that are ethically fighting against animal cruelty.

Mercy for Animals is one of the top activists fighting to stop cruelty among farm animals. The Humane Society of the United States and Farm Animal Rights Movement are also good organizations, and they can tell you many ways you can help stop animal cruelty without stealing local chickens.

Dear Collegian, Last week, your publication printed a Letter to the Editor from a student who was concerned about the lack of an online scheduling option for CSU Health Network Counseling Services. I wanted to take a moment to respond with some context about why Counseling Services does not provide an online scheduling option.

Counseling Services is com-

mitted to providing quality services that are accessible to all CSU students. We want students to know that we carefully considered an online scheduling option but decided against it for a couple of reasons. Since there is a large demand for counseling, an initial appointment with an ongoing counselor may be 2-3 weeks in the future at some points during the semester. By asking students to come in to see us or call us for a brief screening appointment, we are able to problem-solve interim solutions or make a more immediate plan for those in crisis. Additionally, because our staff has different areas of expertise, it is helpful to make the first appointment with a specific counsel-

or for the type of service that will best meet the student’s needs.

Farmer invents spicy pumpkin to stay relevant Ethan Vasser @CSUCollegian

Editor’s note: This is a satire piece from the Collegians opinion section. Real names may be used in fictitious/semi-fictitious ways. Those who do not like reading editors notes are subject to being offended.

Fort Collins- Pumpkin spice connoisseurs, get excited for a new way to enjoy the taste of fall. A new autumn delicacy, coined the “pumpepper” by farmer Zebidiah Edison, is the next step in all things pumpkin spice and could be available soon.

“Every Fall, my daughter and her friends get excited for them pumpkin spice latte things,” Edison said. “So I thought, what if I grew a pepper and a pumpkin together? That way the pumpkin is spicy.”

Thanks to the science of hybrid fruits, like grapples, Edison’s idea is becoming a reality. Hybrid fruits are the

result of plant propagation: creating new plants from seeds, a more natural form of genetic modification.

However, Edison takes a less scientific approach.

“I just cut each seed in half and bury them together in an Ugg boot,” he explains.

Although his methods may be strange, there is no denying their effectiveness. The first pumpepper crop will be ready to harvest in the coming weeks, just in time for the height of pumpkin spice fever and white girl starter packs on twitter.

Edison hopes pumpeppers will transcend a gimmicky use in coffee, and will eventually find their way to Thanksgiving tables across the nation.

He currently holds a patent on the planting process, but has already received offers from Starbucks and Dutch Bros, each eager to capitalize on the pumpepper hype. A pumpepper frappuccino could be a reality by next Fall, so it looks like the pumpepper is here to stay.

Rams’ new Colorado-themed uniforms are awesome Justin Michael @JustinTMichael

Colorado State football made national headlines this weekend with the release of its new Colorado-themed alternate uniforms. The new look is called “State Your Pride” and features an all-white uniform with Colorado flags on both the shoulders and helmet.

The new alternate look received overwhelmingly positive reviews from fans around the country, and understandably so. The new design is fantastic, an absolute home run for the football program on every level.

First off, the decision to claim the state as their own by designing a Colorado-themed uniform before the University of Colorado was a brilliant marketing decision. In a state where locals love to stamp the state flag on everything, the Colorado brand is incredibly hot right now and the Rams were wise to capitalize on the momentum.

Not to mention, if the Buffs ever want to do a similar design, Ram fans will have the satisfaction of knowing that they were first.

Secondly, while a few traditionalists argued that the uniform should have featured green and gold, I firmly believe that the decision to use state colors was a wise one. The entire point of an alternate uniform is to show off a unique new design, so what is the point of coming out with a new uniform that is essentially the exact same look as the primaries?

I have long argued that both CSU and CU have unique uniforms to begin with, especially when it comes to helmet designs, so the programs do not necessarily need multiple looks. However, I certainly understand that in the modern arms race that is college football, there is definitely a need to market your brand and set your program apart from the pack.

CSU and Under Armour have done a terrific job with this aspect when it comes to the alternate designs. The orange and green Ag Day combo is both unique and purposeful,

allowing the Rams to pay homage to the days of Colorado A&M. The all-grey design, which made its debut in the 2016 Wyoming game was also a fresh take for fans.

The “State Your Pride” theme is far and away CSU’s flyest look, though. The red and blue pops with the white, so it is generally just a good looking uniform. The sheer uniqueness of the look was a home run as well.

While other schools like Maryland have gone over the top with state-themed threads, CSU designed a uniform that highlights the best aspects of

the state flag and still keeps things sleek and simple.

Most importantly, though, the look gives the Rams a chance to truly establish themselves as a household name for college football fans from coast to coast.

Uniforms have become an opportunity for universities to market themselves and connect with fans in ways that never would have been possible just a few decades ago. Programs like Oregon changed the game with the help of Nike. Whether the football purists want to acknowledge it or not, swag matters more than ever.

The Rams raised the bar with the completion of a beautiful new on-campus stadium. Slick new uniforms are the next step to national relevance, especially if the program continues to compete and consistently win games.

I very much look forward to the Nov. 11 matchup with Boise State when the Rams will debut the alternate look. If the response is anything like this weekend, CSU football is going to be right where it wants to be, in the spotlight.

Club hockey sweeps Rutgers in opening series of season

The Colorado State Division I club hockey team opened its season with a two-game series against Rutgers University in New Jersey. The first game on Friday saw the Rams take home a 7-3 win over the Ice Knights.

On Saturday, the Rams won an overtime battle 3-2.

CSU entered the weekend as No. 17 in the national ranking, the highest ranking

the team has ever secured entering the season. The Rams are coming off one of their most successful seasons since moving up to the Division I level as the team made it to the national tournament in 2016.

The Rams kicked off their season with a slow first period where Rutgers took a 2-0 lead at the end of the first.

Momentum shifted after that as CSU fought its way back, ultimately winning 7-3. The Rams recorded an impressive

60 shots on goal in the first game, indicative of the pressure they applied throughout the day.

“The game went really well.

We had over 60 shots on goal and we outplayed the other team,” head coach Jeff Degree said. “It was a good start for our first real game.”

Saturday’s game ended with another victory for the Rams, this time in a closer battle. In an overtime effort, the Rams defeated Rutgers 3-2 to sweep

the opening series of the year.

“It was a similar game to the first one,” Degree said. “Their goalie played well, we had 54 shots on goal. I thought our guys did a good job responding when they tied it up, it was a good weekend and a good start to the season.”

The Rams turn their attention to two home games on Sept. 29 and Sept. 30 against Eastern Michigan And Utah, respectively. Both games will be played at the EPIC Center in

Fort Collins.

“We graduated 10 seniors this year and have 12 new guys this year, we have to be patient as we develop and it may take a while to get where we want,” Degree said. “We are very optimistic about our situation in goal, and that is a good spot to have a strong presence in.

When all the guys learn to play with each other, it will be a good year.”

Colorado State dominates UNLV in straight-set victory

UNLV were run out of Moby Arena Saturday afternoon as Colorado State dominated them in a straight-set victory (25-16, 25-19, 25-8).

There was no better example of the Rams (12-2, 2-0 MW) dominance than the third set in which they held the Rebels (4-11, 0-2 MW) to a hitting percentage of -.533. CSU recorded five blocks while the Rebels almost doubled their attack errors with nine of their 20 coming in the final frame.

“We played great defense today, we played crisp defense today,” head coach Tom Hilbert said. “I think at the end there, their coach had told them just keep setting the middles … we really honed in on them and stopped them. They were having problems making connections with that setter.”

The Rams started out on an 8-0 run before the Rebels were finally able to get on the board.

The set ended how it started with the Rams closing out the Rebels on a 7-0 run to make the final set score 25-8.

“This was a terrific match by our team,” Hilbert said. “I think our execution, service pressure and really our ability to side out and to transition every time they gave us what we call a ‘junk ball,’ we were converting it.”

Senior Jasmine Hanna led the way again for the Rams on offense with 12 kills and a .360 hitting mark. Sophomore Kirstie Hillyer had six kills with a .500 mark in her second match back from a knee injury she suffered earlier in the year.

Overall, the Rams hit .425 as a team for the match while holding the Rebels to -.042. The only area that UNLV bested the Rams in was serving, as seen by CSU having 12 service errors to the Rebels’ zero.

Other than serving, the No. 23 team in the nation handily won its second conference match of the season to end an

eight-game home stand. The Rams went 7-1 in those matches, the only loss coming against No. 25 Colorado.

“There is definitely no pressure,” redshirt freshman Breana Runnels said on the Rams’ option on offense. “Coming off of all these three-game weekends and now we are in conference we play two games a week, everybody is fresh, everybody can hit at their

highest level.”

The Rams will need their highest level as their next four matches will be on the road. Wyoming is up first when CSU travels to Laramie Tuesday to take on the Cowgirls at 6:30 p.m.. The Rams will finish the stretch with matchups against Air Force, Boise State and Utah State.

CSU rugby routs Utah State for first win of the season

The Colorado State men’s club rugby team scored early and often in a 52-10 victory over the Utah State Aggies in the first game of the 2017-18 season.

The Rams started hot, scoring just minutes into the game to take an early 5-0.

Historically, the team has had problems getting off to a fast start, sometimes taking 15 minuets to really find rhythm.

However, this was not an issue for the Rams on Saturday.

“It wasn’t our hardest competition of the year,” head coach Rod Hartley said. “But the fact that our guys were able to score early really shows how focused they are early in the season.”

The Rams added to their

lead 28 minutes into the first half taking a commanding 12-0 lead.

The Aggies would inch their way back with a score 32 minutes into the first half. Just 2 minutes later, however, the Rams answered to take a 19-5 lead heading into the half. The Rams came out of half strong, scoring just one minute into the half, making the score 26-5.

Then the rain started to fall. Big plays from both sides were halted as players struggled to keep a grip on the ball and their footing. Even with the conditions, the Rams scored four more times while holding the Aggies to just one sore in the second half to earn their first win of the young season.

The Rams showed great teamwork encouraging each other to finish strong. After the game, the team challenged each

other to not let anyone score on them for the rest of the season.

Team captain Jaron Beerline was happy with the team’s effort in the first competition of the year.

“I think the score speaks for itself,” Beerline said. “We were able to play well even in the rain.

There is still a lot of work to do and we have some big matches coming up” Hartley said that the performance was something they should be proud of but the weather assured the team still needs to improve its ball control and tackling.

Focus now turns to a matchup between the Rams and No. 11 Utah in Salt Lake City. The game figures to test the Rams and show where they stack up against a top team in the nation.

CSU soccer wraps up weekend with 0-0 draw at Colorado College

The Colorado State women’s soccer team has lit up the scoreboard for a program record 15 goals in 10 games this season. However, defense and goaltending made the difference in Sunday’s 0-0 draw versus Colorado College at Washburn Field in Colorado Springs.

For the second consecutive game, CSU defenders Beth Plentl and Halley Havlicek played the entire 110 minutes to lead the Rams defensively.

Havlicek stifled CC scoring chances all afternoon, but her strong day began in the ninth minute when she almost scored on a chance of her own.

On a play that started as a corner kick, the Tigers struggled to clear the defensive zone and turned the ball over to Havlicek.

With space just outside the penalty area, Havlicek ripped a shot right beneath the CC crossbar, but Tigers’ goalie Jade Odom jumped to make a two-handed save before it could reach the net.

On the defensive side of the ball, Havlicek and the Rams didn’t allow CC to steer a shot towards net until a harmless attempt in the 23rd minute.

Throughout the first half, CC maintained an advantage in possession with their

methodical ball movement, but could only get around the CSU defense for one shot on goal.

Ten minutes into the second half, CC had a golden opportunity to break the scoreless tie when Tigers’ leading scorer Lauren Milliet burst into the CSU penalty area. With the CSU defenders focused on Milliet, the forward passed it to a wide-open Catie Mcdonald, but the sophomore couldn’t get a shot through the tight angle.

Many of CSU’s best scoring opportunities in the second half came off of corner kicks, but the Rams weren’t able to find a lane in the busy penalty area to sneak a shot past Odom.

In the 85th minute, Rams’ assists leader Makenzi Taylor showed off her goal scoring ability when she punched a laser towards the CC net from outside the penalty area. Odom, though, once again made a leaping one-handed save to keep the game tied at 0-0.

In the final minute of regulation, CSU was awarded a free kick from long range. The kick made it to the penalty area, but the Rams could not find space in traffic and the game rolled into overtime for the third time in as many matches for CSU. The two sides exchanged a series of scoring opportunities in overtime, yet the strong

goaltending and defensive performances from both the Rams and Tigers carried over from regulation and neither team could net a game-winner.

Despite the result, CSU coach Bill Hempen is pleased with his team’s performance in Mountain West opening weekend.

“Like I told our players, we have never gotten a result against Colorado College, and we can add that to the list of teams that we have gotten a result against,” Hempen said in statement. “To come out on the road the first weekend of conference and get two points, we’ll take it.”

Sunday’s scoreless draw marks the second shutout for CSU goaltender Hunter Peifer.

The redshirt sophomore has been a key factor in the Rams’ first two conference results.

“Hunter has helped raise everything about us as a club,” CSU coach Bill Hempen said in a statement. “Simply, she is stopping the ones we ask her to stop, and occasionally she comes off the line to do something special and make plays for our team.”

The Rams return home for a conference showdown against San Jose State on Friday at 4 p.m. at the CSU Soccer Field.

Jerrell Mock, Rams dominate Roy Griak Invitational

Jerrell Mock joined a short list of runners to repeat as champions at the Roy Griak Invitational. Behind a strong performance from Mock, the men’s team placed first, while the women’s team placed sixth Saturday in Minnesota.

Mock finished his 8k with a time of 24:52 to win his second consecutive individual men’s championship. With Mock’s win, CSU became the only team in the history of the Roy Griak Invitational to have the individual men’s champion on their team for three consecutive seasons, a streak that started in 2015 by Jefferson Abbey.

Mock became only the third runner in meet history to repeat as champion, the first since the 2002-2003 season.

“Those guys stepping up is huge for our team,” head coach Art Siemers said in a release.

“We have even more guys that can step up, but in these kinds of conditions, everybody takes the heat and humidity a little differently. But this is what a good team does.”

In addition to Mock’s individualwin,solidperformances from Cole Rockhold, Eric Hamer, Grant Fischer, and Wayde Hall led the rams to their first ever team team win at the Minnesota-based Invitational.

Rockhold finished with a time

of 25:19, placing seventh while Hamer finished with a time of 25:29 and placed 10th. Fischer finished with a time of 25:30 and placed 11th behind Hamer, while Hall finished with a time of 25:48, placing 17th.

The women’s team finished sixth, an improvement of seven spots from a year ago. McKenna Spillar finished the 6k with a time of 22:36 to place 30th. Ali Kallner finished with a time of 22:47 and placed 37th. Spillar and Kallner were the only ram women to finish in the top 40.

“Dom (Dominique Ward) and Mary (Franke) (also) had very good races and McKenna (Spillar) has been very consistent for us,” Siemers said of the women’s performance. “It’s a step in the right direction for us. We really wanted to be a few teams higher, but it’s a good start. We’re just going to keep working hard. We have three weeks to prepare for the Wisconsin (Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational) – that’s going to be the meet of the year.

We’re going to keep building on what we learned today for the next one.”

All of the Rams that competed improved from their performances last year except for Mock, who finished first in 2016.

The Rams’ next meet is scheduled for Oct. 13 at the Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational in Madison, Wisconsin.

CSU men’s golf finishes strong after quick turnaround

After the best finish in the history of the Ram Masters Invitational on Tuesday, the Colorado State men’s golf team was back in action on Friday to compete in the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate tournament, hosted by the University of New Mexico.

Whether it was the quick turnaround or the wind and rain, something cooled off the Rams during Friday’s first round. However, they still had two rounds left in the two-day tournament.

With an already challenging course mixed with spatterings of wind and rain, the Rams endured a difficult opening round of the tournament. Only two of 17 teams finished under par after the first round. CSU struggled and posted a plus-7 to finish the round in ninth place.

Things went a little better for the Rams in the afternoon as Max Oelfke anchored the team by shooting 1-under par. The team overall only shot one stroke better in the second round, but

Oelfke’s strong play combined with struggles from other teams helped the Rams finish the day tied for fourth with a 13-over 589 on the par-72 course.

The third round was the Rams’ best of the weekend.

The team shot a 4-over 292 for the day, again led by Oelfke’s team-leading 1-under 71. It wasn’t enough to move up the board though as Colorado State dropped one place to finish fifth in the tournament with a 17-over 881. The Rams finished three strokes ahead of host UNM, San Diego State and Colorado, who all tied for sixth.

The weekend shouldn’t be considered too much of a letdown from last weekend though as the Rams played stiffer competition on a more challenging course.

The Rams also had three players in Oelfke, Jake Staino and A.J. Ott finish in the top 20, tied for the most in the tournament with rival CU. “I’m very happy with our performance this week,” head coach Christian Newton said in a statement. “The guys showed resiliency and toughness on a really tough set-up.”

The Rams have finished in the top five of the first three tournaments they have played in this year and will aim to continue

UNC students gather to blow Greeley’s stink into Wyoming

What prompted a group of students from the University of Northern Colorado to vape in hopes of blowing Greeley’s bad

smell into Wyoming?

Turns out it was a Facebook event that started as a joke, according to its creator Austin Huber, a sophomore English major at UNC. Titled, “Vape Facing North To Blow Greeley’s Bad

Gathered at University of Northern Colorado’s University Center UNC student, Austin Huber, vapes a “phat cloud”. Huber was the founder of the event, created to rid Greeley of its stink by vaping. He planned to create similar events to bring people together.

the context of that horrific event, was a confirmation of what I already believed but now I knew as a fact,” Frazier said. “That art, that design, and specifically the poster, is powerful. It can create expression on issues of the time.”

This message sits at the core of what the CIIPE is all about. In exhibiting these powerful and iconic posters, the students of CSU and the surrounding community can learn to appreciate the genre that saturates their environment.

“Posters are part of the fabric of cities and countries,” Frazier said. “They can be seen in so many contexts and situations. In streets, in theatres, in classrooms, in galleries and museums.”

The Curfman Gallery in the Lory Student Center and the Visual Arts Building are to hosts the bulk of the exhibit

through Nov. 3, while the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art will exhibit works by Drueding and Scorsone through Dec. 15. All posters in the Curfman Gallery are of European origin, and those from China and the Americas are in the Visual Arts Building. The differences in design when touring between the two halves of the exhibit are striking.

Before the CIIPE’s opening, Drueding and Scorsone selected a handful of pieces that stood out from the rest based on a set of criteria.

“First we’re drawn by the aesthetics,” Scorsone said.

“But then we have to discover how well that communicates the idea. We just don’t look at it for its decorative qualities but also for its communicative qualities.”

“I just wanted to make a joke,” Huber said. “I absolutely didn’t expect this many people to say they were interested.”

The idea came to Huber when he saw bizarre Facebook events surrounding Hurrican Irma, with one event dedicated to vaping a cloud big enough to actually fight Irma in order to dispel the destruction.

“The hurricane was obviously a horrible thing, but I liked how they were making light out of a bad situation,” Huber said.

“It’s something that I am pretty much all about.”

On Sept. 23, 490 users on Facebook claimed they were interested in going and 163 said they were committed to vaping for the cause.

“I originally wasn’t even going to go but enough people showed an interest so I knew that I had to come,” Huber said.

For UNC students, Greeley’s smell is a fact a life.

“Before I moved here people told me that the smell is bad but you get used to it,” Huber said. “I haven’t gotten used to it.”

According to Taylor Zangari, a sophomore English major at UNC, the smell is a daily occurrence for her when she

received honorable mentions.

With decades of experience being exhibited in galleries all over the world, Drueding and Scorsone know a thing or two about effective graphic design.

Before they get started on the image, they master the concept first.

“We do a lot of research, find out as much about (the concept) as possible,” Scorsone said. “This way we’re not just dealing with the periphery of an idea.”

From this step, the duo independently sketches out ideas and notes before comparing them and deciding on a final concept.

“Sometimes one of us will do the drawing or the collage and then hand it off to the other one to add their thing to it,” Drueding said.

On Sept. 21, the artists spoke on the Picturing Human Rights panel at the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art, discussing the extra challenges involved in graphically representing globally relevant social issues, a common theme in the two’s work.

Scorsone summed it up in

“On hot days it just really ferments the smell in the air, sometimes you can’t even open the window,” Zangari said.

However, the day of the event was overshadowed by cloudy skies and rainy weather. Despite the 163 people who claimed they were going, only a handful of students showed up to fight the stink.

“I went to UNC last year, but I transferred because the smell in Greeley is unbearable,” said Sam Sterns, a sophomore business marketing major at Colorado State University. “Hopefully this will turn things around and make the air less stinky.”

As 4:20 p.m., the time the event was scheduled to start, rolled by, it was clear that the turnout was not going to meet expectations. However, it was something Huber was not discouraged by.

“Unfortunately since it’s starting to rain, I think these clouds are going to win out,” Huber said. “I didn’t have any expectations for this, I just thought it was a funny thing to do.”

While it is Huber’s first time he has ever made an event of this kind, it won’t be the last. He has already thought of a list of ideas he can’t wait to invite people to.

“I was thinking about having an event where we would talk to the squirrels like Kronk from Emperor’s New Groove or another one when we would act out scenes from the Titanic in the library,” Huber said.

Whether or not the vaping helped rid Greeley of its smell, the event had some other unforeseen benefits.

“I think this raises awareness for the positives of vaping,” Sterns said. “Not only helping people quit smoking, which is awesome, but also to help flavor the air.”

While the weather and the rain might have been a factor in the low turnout, it certainly held the smell at bay. A small victory but one that did not go unnoticed. Sterns commented on the turnaround.

“We’re turning stinkytown into flavortown.”

“A lot of design is about making something visible that you really can’t see in the real world,” Drueding replied.

Each of the nearly 150 submissions will enter the International Poster Collection of the CSU Libraries, while a sec-

ond copy of each will be on sale to the public through the exhibit’s end. Students receive a discounted price of $40 versus the standard 80. Most of the exhibit was sold Friday night, but many of the iconic works are still up for sale.

The Killers are back, and it’s Wonderful (Wonderful)

Oh wonderful, The Killers are back.

In the last five years, we have had plenty of time to devour and evaluate “Battle Born” and just when you thought that the album was going to go stale, The Killers decide to drop their fifth studio album, “Wonderful Wonderful.”

The Killers are the one thing that could not stay in Las Vegas. From their debut album “Hot Fuss” back 2004, the band has always had a spot in the mainstream spot light. “Hot Fuss” is arguably one of the few quintessential albums of the early 2000s. Every album following the debut, such as “Sam’s Town” and “Day & Age,” never found it hard to find a spot in the charts.

With the release of “Battle Born” back in 2012, listeners began to think they really understood who The Killers were, but five years is a long time, and in that time the band has had a chance to redefine who they actually are with “Wonderful Wonderful.”

“Wonderful Wonderful” is a 10-track record that clocks in around 43 minutes in length.

The big question that this record tries to invoke in its listeners is ‘what does it mean to be a man?’

Brandon Flowers tries his best to put it all in song and for the most part with “Wonderful Wonderful”, it works well.

There are a few brief moments when this idea seems to fall flat.

Everything about this record seems larger than life, which makes it even harder to follow

from start to finish, but in the end is still an enjoyable ride.

Musically, we hear just how these last five years have been spent by The Killers. Everything in this record is larger, cleaner and has more layers. Tracks like “Run For Cover” and “Out of My Mind” have an almost classic Killer’s style about them but with a new twist: there are more elements and progression.

Each track on this record seems like it may close out a set at a show, which in the end is slightly counterproductive. When each track has you thinking that you are listening to the end of a show and not somewhere in the middle than there may be something wrong. Yet, you cannot help but come back time and time again for tracks such as “Some Kind of Love” and “Life to Come.” Yet there are tracks that just do not do anything for the record like “The Man” and “Rut,” which have an almost tasteless feeling to them.

Wonderful.” What does it really mean to be a man? A question that you cannot help but think about when you listen to something like “The Calling” or “Tyson vs Douglas,” two tracks that are dynamic and almost opposite in sound still have the same core and theme. What works best in “Wonderful Wonderful” is how well each track seems to complement each other. While it may be unintentional or not, Flowers has always understood his place in the band and his lyrics

tend to reflect that. The theme of a man down on his luck and almost reaching the goal that the band set out for themselves can be heard in tracks like “Wonderful Wonderful” or “Have All the Songs Been Written?”

Should you listen to it? Yes! “Wonderful Wonderful” is not a record made for you, the listener. This is a record that was made by and for The Killers, and in large part for Brandon Flowers himself and it shows. While there may be a

few moments that may have you questioning why the band chose to do something like they did, you can almost completely disregard that sentiment after a few tracks with this record. Wonderful may be a bit of a stretch, but it is good to hear The Killers back together after a long time. While they may not be “The Man” anymore or in a “Rut” The Killers are still out to prove they are as relevant as they were in 2004.

Ram Catholic supports spiritual development, creates community

Ancient tradition and spirituality converge at Saint John XXIII Catholic Church as Ram Catholic students attend a candlelight mass on Thursday night.

Ram Catholic is a Colorado State University student organization. The Catholic Campus Ministry operates in partnership with Saint John XXIII Newman Center. It aims to provide spiritual support for students in the transitional time that college creates.

Elizabeth Morehead, a senior art history major and Ram Catholic member, said that the organization helps new students stay connected with the faith

beginning at the Ram Awakening retreat because of the focus on fellowship and worship.

Ram Awakening is a retreat open to college-age students of any religion that aims to awake a love for God in participants. It is a weekend-long event that is held every year in the spring and fall semesters. This event helps students meet fellow Catholics near their age.

Morehead met her only friends freshman year through Ram Catholic’s bible study, she suggests newcomers start with the bible study as an introduction to the organization, she said.

Matt Worden, a junior psychology and criminal justice major came to CSU with no religious affiliations. After becoming a member of the

Catholic fraternity, Phi Kappa Theta, he decided to attend the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. Even though he did not have any plans to develop a place in a church community he now wants to encourage other students to just take a look.

“Just give it a chance,” Worden said. “You’ve got to be open minded.”

Steve Sonnier, a fifth-year human development and family studies major, said that Ram Catholic provides a chance for new students to re-energize their faith.

“When I got to college I kind of needed a good kick start,” Sonnier said. “I went to Ram Awakening with these guys and that really set the fire. It very much fills the need for a spiritual

aspect as well as the social.”

Sonnier is also a member of Phi Kappa Theta. After beginning school, he left to attend seminary and join the priesthood. He later realized that it was not the path he was called to, and returned to classes.

There are a variety of experiences among Ram Catholic students and an easy sense of comfort and community in front of the chapel.

Students wishing to become involved with Ram Catholic are invited to attend weekly gatherings.

On Thursday evenings, a candlelight mass is held at 9 p.m. and is followed by social time. A student mass is celebrated on Sundays at 5:30 p.m. and afterwards the club provides a meal for

students. Masses are also open to the public. When the weather is fair, Ram Catholic often plans activities. Students enjoy swing dancing socials and classes when they are available.

Ram Catholic provides bible studies, holds lectures and teaches classes. It also focuses on service. Students are able to join a service team through the organization. Right now, these teams volunteer weekly serving dinner at the Mission, a Christian homeless shelter in Fort Collins.

CSU ROTC program cheers on football team with pushups

If you have been to a football game at Colorado State University, you have seen them.

They are known as the pushup crew from the CSU Reserve Officer Training Corp, or ROTC program.

The ROTC program is almost as old as CSU, in fact, the program started nine years after CSU was founded in 1890.

To see the push up crew in action, attend the next CSU football game at home on Oct. 14 against Nevada.

Each time the Rams score the pushup crew completes pushups for the increment of the latest

score. For example, if the Nick Stevens runs in a touchdown and the extra point is good, the crew does seven pushups. If on the very next play the opponent fumbles and the Rams score again, the crew now completes the new score amount, in this case, 14 total pushups. As the game goes on, the crew increases the number of pushups performed.

The pushup crew is comprised of the Air Force and Army ROTC students. The cadets enjoy the crew, even though it can be taxing on the body.The pushups not only reflect school spirit but the physical strength required for the military.

“I liked the idea,” said CSU student Jack Brady. “Schools do this all over the country. It

signifies military strength.”

In the recent win over Oregon State, each member of the pushup crew completed 313 pushups. “(The crowd) cheers us on, especially when we get the high numbers,” said Cadet Robert Jensen with the Air Force ROTC. For the cadets, the pushup crew allows them to build strength and show school spirit.

“It’s a fun experience,” said Cadet Will Brown with Air Force ROTC. “It’s a good feeling cheering on the team.”

To see the pushup crew in action, attend the next CSU football game at home on Oct. 14 against Nevada.
