2012 WINTER VISITORS WELCOME GUIDE KARTCHNER CAVERNS

T

he Valley is the perfect starting point for a day-trip adventure, whether it’s to Tombstone and the worldfamous Kartchner Caverns, or up to gorgeous Sedona or picturesque Payson:

Day trips

There’s a reason so many people go to SEDONA: It brims with attractions. You can stay at a secluded spa resort or an affordable motel right in the thick of things. Shop for art, jewelry or scorpions encased in Lucite. Take a Pink Jeep tour or hot-air balloon ride. You can camp, swim, fish and mountain bike.

The KARTCHNER CAVERNS, rated one of the world’s 10 most beautiful caves, is an eerie wonderland of stalactites and stalagmites still growing beneath the Whetstone Mountains 40 miles southeast of Tucson. TOMBSTONE’S place in the Old West is well-known from novels and movies - the discovery of silver and resulting boom, the gunfight at the O.K. Corral, larger-than-life characters like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, the bust when the mines flooded and its rebirth as “The Town Too Tough to Die.” ▶

At an elevation of nearly 7,000 feet, FLAGSTAFF is among the highest cities in the U.S. It has a distinct four-season climate and boasts the 12,643-foot Humphreys Peak, the highest point in the state.

Say the words “wine country” to a lover of Cabernet Sauvignon and the likely response will be “Napa County.” But while northern California’s legendary vineyard region is well known, it has

also become an expensive place to visit. ARIZONA’S WINE COUNTRY is a bargain by anyone’s standards. With 45 wineries scattered across the state, you will be sure to find one up to your standards. LAKE HAVASU is one of the most family-
