WELCOME TO THE
12th Annual Scottsdale
INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
An even dozen, and still counting. When I first thought about mounting such a festival those many years ago, I never dreamed that we would be so successful, not only becoming an international film festival but also a film festival internationally recognized and lauded for its originality and range. This year we will show 38 films, 69 times, over a five-day period! The Festival planners, the volunteers, and the viewing audience can be justifiably proud of what we have made happen in Scottsdale. So now with both hindsight and insight into what the next few years will bring, we have decided to update our mission and vision statements to better represent the evolution of the Festival.
Your gift this year will help the Scottsdale International Film Festival meet its budget for: • Visiting Guests • Film Rental • Programming • Film Shipping Fill out the form below to support the Festival! DONATION AMOUNT: $5 $10 $25 $50 $100 $250 $500 $1,000 Other Amount: $ _____________________________________________________ Your contribution is tax-deductible!

New Mission: The Scottsdale International Film Festival is a destination event and catalyst for connecting diverse filmmakers from around the world with film lovers in a fresh, thought-provoking, and enduring community of support. New Vision: Uniting Arizona with the world through the expression of film. Even the most casual look at this year’s line-up reveals a blend of films to satisfy a broad range of interests and tastes. There are smaller films for the appreciative, daring cineaste; and bigger, more mainstream films that reveal the burgeoning of the commercial market — a wonderful mix of film genres from light-hearted comedies to period dramas, chosen from all corners of the world. We have films from Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and North and South America — films not only in English, French, Spanish, German, and Italian but also in Turkish, Icelandic, and Kinyarwanda! As the world continues to shrink economically and geopolitically, the Festival brings us an ever-expanding wide angle view of the ethos and cultures of exotic lands. There is so much to see and something for everyone! My heart overflows with joy for your interest in, and support of, the Scottsdale International Film Festival. Thank you, and enjoy! enjoy! enjoy!

FRED SCHEPISI, DIRECTOR THE EYE OF THE STORM OPENING NIGHT FILM Mr. Schepisi is scheduled to present his film and participate in a post-film discussion on Friday, October 5th starting at 7:30 PM Fred Schepisi (b. Melbourne, 1939) began his production career in the advertising world before joining Cinesound Productions then starting the Film House, where for 20-plus years he directed both commercials and documentaries. His first feature-length film was the semi-autobiographical The Devil’s Playground (1976), which won six AFI awards including Best Film and established Fred’s reputation as a talented director, writer and producer. The success of his second film, The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1978), took Fred to the U.S where he directed Barbarosa (1981), Iceman (1983), Plenty (1985), and Roxanne (1987), before returning to Australia to co-write and direct Evil Angels (a.k.a. A Cry in the Dark, 1988). Evil Angels received numerous awards and nominations including the AFI Best Achievement in Direction and Best Screenplay Adaptation and two Golden Globe nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Director. Fred also produced and directed the screen adaptation of John Guare’s play Six Degrees of Separation (1993) starring Stockard Channing, Donald Sutherland and Will Smith. His other film credits as producer and director include The Russia House (1990), Mr. Baseball (1992), IQ (1994), Last Orders, (2001) and It Runs in the Family (2002). In 1996, he was called in to direct new material and restructure Fierce Creatures. In 2004, Fred co-produced and directed the film adaptation of the best-selling novel by Richard Russo Empire Falls (2004). Starring Paul Newman, Ed Harris, Joanne Woodward, Robin Wright Penn and Helen Hunt, the film debuted in the U.S on HBO, was nominated for a number of awards and won Golden Globes for Best MiniSeries or Motion Picture made for Television and Paul Newman as Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television. It was also nominated for various Emmys with Paul Newman winning as Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie. Fred has just completed work as producer and director on THE EYE OF THE STORM (2011) starring Geoffrey Rush, Charlotte Rampling, Judy Davis, Alexandra Schepisi, Helen Morse, John Gaden and Robyn Nevin. Fred was recently awarded the Order of Australia for his service to the Australian film industry first as a mentor and then as a director, producer and screenwriter.
JULIO BÁRCENAS, PRODUCER THE LAST CHRISTEROS Mr. Barcenas is scheduled to present his film and participate in a post-film discussion on Saturday, October 6th starting at 4:00 PM and again on Sunday, October 7th starting at 9:00 AM. JOSH DRAGOTTA, DIRECTOR SATAN’S ANGEL: QUEEN OF THE FIRE TASSELS Mr. Dragotta is scheduled to present his film and participate in a post-film discussion on Saturday, October 6th at 8:35 PM. Josh Dragotta has been making films for the past 18 years beginning in New Jersey. While living in New Jersey he attended a community college in Bucks, County Pennsylvania where he studied cinematography. It was there that he began his passion for telling stories, shooting and editing short 16mm films and submitting them to local film festivals. Josh later moved to Tucson, Arizona where he continued his craft and shifted toward digital video. While attending the University of Arizona he studied photography and produced several short films as well as an annual film festival. Originally intended to generate funds for film projects, the Back Alley Film Festival took on a life of its own and ran for 10 years. In 2007, Josh moved to Los Angeles where he met his producing partner Tony Marsico. The two formed a creative partnership and formed Retrograde Productions, LLC. They have produced short films, music videos and commercials. Their work has been selected in film festivals, and they have garnered distribution. Their most recent and first feature film, SATAN’S ANGEL: QUEEN OF THE FIRE TASSELS, premiered at the prestigious Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Film Festival: Outfest. The two are preparing for their next project. Josh resides in Los Angeles with his wife and three dogs.

ACTORS
ANGEL WALKER SATAN’S ANGEL: QUEEN OF THE FIRE TASSELS Ms. Walker is scheduled to present her film and participate in a post-film discussion on Saturday, October 6th at 8:35 PM. Born Cecelia Angel Walker, Satan’s Angel’s life has been anything but uninteresting. A San Francisco girl at heart, Angel started stripping on San Francisco’s legendary Broadway in North Beach during the early 60s. It was the amateur strip contests that led Angel Dahl to be known as Satan’s Angel. Competing with acts became challenging so she found a unique take on the art of striptease with a finale that would set audiences ablaze! Satan’s Angel was now Queen of The Fire Tassels and her signature move was setting her ta-ta’s on fire. It was a hit! She found herself dancing burlesque in Las Vegas and all over the world. She entertained the troops in Vietnam. Promoters like Barry Ashton, Harold Minsky and Ann Corio booked her regularly. From swinging with the Rat Pack to smoking dope with Janis Joplin and Jimmy Hendrix, Angel has lived a life of sexual freedom. Angel has never denied her sexuality. Her life has brought her many loves and losses, from stage door johnnies to movie stars. She has always been open about her life at times causing her physical harm. In the mid 80s, Angel retired from dancing and battled addiction. After fleeing the East Coast from a motorcycle gang Angel returned to the West Coast. In 2000, Angel came out of retirement and emerged in the burlesque world. Her first dance was at Teasorama and was welcomed with a standing ovation. Her status as a legend has helped bring attention to the pioneers of burlesque, and her commitment to the preservation of burlesque keeps her busy traveling and telling stories. She has had drinks named after her, songs sung about her, countless articles written about her, and has had a play written about her. In 2012, a feature documentary chronicling her life was produced with wide appeal. Her name is Satan’s Angel.
SPOTLIGHT ON FRANCE
French comedies, dramas and history have figured prominently in the Festival throughout the years. When we tally up the overall attendance at our previous French film offerings, it’s obvious that there are many thousands of Francophile/ cinéastes in the Valley who support this endeavor. As a merci beaucoup to you, we decided to go all in with not one, not two, not even three — but FOUR (!) French language films: THE DAY I SAW YOUR HEART; HENRY OF NAVARRE; LET MY PEOPLE GO!; THE WELLDIGGER’S DAUGHTER OSCAR CONTENDERS ARE STILL HERE
We know that you expect the program to include those Oscar® contenders that didn’t win the coveted Foreign Oscar’s “Best” award. This year’s special selection of four official film submissions to the 2012 Foreign Film Academy Awards are: ABU, SON OF ADAM; AMNESTY; VOLCANO; and THE WOMAN IN THE SEPTIC TANK SPOTLIGHT ON LATIN AMERICA
The Festival regularly presents films from Latin America as part of its programming. We are very proud to be featuring: CRAFT; FAT, BALD, SHORT MAN; THE FINGER; JUAN IN A MILLION; THE LAST CHRISTEROS; and THE PRIZE JEWISH FILMS & JEWISH THEMES

AWARDS: Sundance Film Festival - Audience Award/Special Jury Prize for Ensemble Acting
In a Sydney suburb, two nurses, a housekeeper and a solicitor attend to Elizabeth Hunter (Charlotte Rampling) as her expatriate son and daughter convene at her deathbed. In dying, as in living, Mrs. Hunter remains a formidable force on those around her. It is via Mrs. Hunter’s authority over living that her household and children vicariously face death and struggle to give consequence to life. Estranged from a mother who was never capable of loving them Sir Basil, (Geoffrey Rush), a famous but struggling actor in London, and Dorothy (Judy Davis), an impecunious French princess, attempt to reconcile with her. In doing so they are reduced from states of worldly sophistication to floundering adolescence. The children unite in a common goal — to leave Australia with their vast inheritance. Moving through Sydney’s social scene, they search for a way to fulfill their desire. Using the reluctant services of their family lawyer Arnold Wyburd (John Gaden), a man long in love with Mrs. Hunter, they scheme to place their mother in a society nursing home to expedite her demise. Panic sets in as the staff sense the impending end of their eccentric world. Mrs. Hunter confesses her profound disappointment at failing to recreate the state of humility and grace she experienced when caught in the eye of a cyclone 15 years earlier. For the first time in their lives, the meaning of compassion takes the children by surprise.
Based on the poignantly optimistic autobiographical writings of California-based journalist and poet Mark O’Brien, THE SESSIONS tells the story of a man confined to an iron lung who is determined, at age 38, to lose his virginity. With the help of his therapists and the guidance of his priest, he sets out to make his dream a reality.

BAIKONUR is a most unusual love story. The Baikonur Cosmodrome, an entire Kazakh city administered by Russia, encompasses a space launch facility. Riding furiously across the barren steppes outside Baikonur are rival groups of Kazakh horsemen, intent on being the first to reach newly landed space junk, which they recycle for a profit. The villagers’ motto: Whatever falls from heaven is a gift from God and belongs to the first who finds it. The launches are monitored by a ham radio operator calling himself Gagarin, after the Soviet cosmonaut. One day, a capsule containing a beautiful French space tourist crashes to Earth, rendering her comatose. Gagarin takes her tenderly into his yurt and places her on a bier, like Sleeping Beauty. Lonesome, middle-aged virgin, Antonio Farfán, is picked on and ridiculed as a matter of course, whether by coworkers or his bullying mooch of a brother (who only calls when he needs money). An employee of a notary’s office, his status improves a bit when his new boss—and strangely affable doppelganger—takes an interest in him. But Farfán’s deep-seated shyness and insecurity are only partly assuaged. The question becomes: How can he make use of it?

After seven years of local dictatorship, a remote village in Argentina formally becomes a town, with the birth of its 501st inhabitant. Hidalgo, a slick and ingratiating scion, is eager for the new post of mayor. Smelling a rat, Baldomero (a beloved natural leader with a habitually tapping digit) runs against him—and soon turns up dead. His shopkeeper brother vows revenge, keeping Baldomero’s severed finger in a jar, initially as a remembrance. But eventually it becomes an absurd icon of leadership that spurs the town to defy crooked elections, interloping powers and Hidalgo to go its own way. Based on real events, this charming dramatic comedy pokes fun at small town ways while celebrating true democratic values.

HENRY OF NAVARRE – (Henri IV) Director: Jo Baier Country: Germany Runtime: 153 minutes Languages: French and German, with subtitles in English FORMAT: DCP
Set in Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, this radiantly self-referential film-within-a-film describes the vision and trials of a determined filmmaker named Balthazar, as he tries to produce his first feature, The Cycle of the Cockroach. The trenchant drama, about a brother and sister dealing with the aftermath of genocide, finds no support from agencies only interested in funding upbeat policyfriendly films. As Balthazar borrows recklessly from a loan shark, the Cycle plays out on the screen, subtly measuring the horror and systematic madness of events hardly unique to Rwanda, while offering bracing insight into the nature of political violence.

IN THE FAMILY Director: Patrick Wang Country: USA Runtime: 169 minutes FORMAT: DCP AWARDS: San Diego Asian Film Festival - George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award/Jury Award - Best Narrative Feature; San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival - Jury Award for Best Narrative Feature/Emerging Filmmaker Award Eschewing formula and stereotype, Wang delivers a heartfelt story woven around child custody, “two-Dad” families, parental loss, interracial relations, and the human side of the law. The film opens with the daily routines of an ordinary family in Tennessee, where Joey (Patrick Wang) and Cody (Trevor St. John) are raising their precocious son Chip. The narrative shifts after tragedy forces Joey to raise his son alone. Joey’s grief is compounded when he discovers that Cody’s sister has been granted custody of Chip. Wang allows the film to patiently interweave flashback sequences that reveal the complex nature of Cody’s relationship with Joey and their relationship with Cody’s family. Refusing to demonize the family, Wang offers a transcendent narrative that embraces how light and shadow both shape the human heart. ~ San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival Principal Cast: Sebastian Brodziak, Peter Hermann, Susan Kellermann, Kelly McAndrew, Brian Murray, Park Overall, Trevor St. John, Patrick Wang

In early 1930’s Jalisco, a group of men refused to accept amnesty and continued to fight against religious persecution. This is the story of five valiant men who stood up against the Mexican army and hid out in the rugged mountain terrain of the high desert near Guadalajara. The skilled survivalists take us along the mountain trails they know best. The Cristero War (also known as the Cristiada) was an uprising and counter-revolution against the Mexican government’s persecution of Roman Catholics in the 1920s and 1930s. Director Matias Meyer adapted Antonio Estrada’s novel, “Rescoldo, The Last Christeros,” which was based on Estrada’s years spent hiding with his family in the mountains. Meyer’s cast of nonprofessional actors lends an authentic impression to the characters of these Mexican revolutionaries; a few of them are actually relatives of the original historic group. ~ Seattle International Film Festival

Leaving the security of his remote Zulu village for the big city, with the hope of going to school, he arrives on the doorstep of an uncle who has no use for him. Russia in the time of Perestroika – the borders are opening up, and rock music is hitting the alleyways of Moscow. It’s 1986 and black-market jeans are the quickest way to get you into the cool crowd. For Boris, the clumsiest pupil at the famous Bolshoi Theater Ballet Academy, supplying these jeans to his classmates is his ticket to popularity, along with his claim that he is the son of Russia’s most famous ballet dancer, Mikhail Baryshnikov, an idea fed to him by his mother. It is only a matter of time before these illusions catch up with Boris. In a place where decorum and conformity rule, Boris’s dreams are met head on in a hilarious and heart-warming way, which takes us back to the 80s when the world was starting to rumble under the headphones of the portable Walkman.
NICKY’S FAMILY is an emotional retelling of the remarkable efforts one man took to rescue 669 Czech children from death during WWII. Sir Nicholas Winton was a young English businessman at the time; but when chance brought him to Nazi occupied Czechoslovakia, he put aside his own pursuits and began organizing the many children of Jewish refugees to escape Nazi clutches. While this emotional journey of sacrifice is moving in its own right, the greater value of director Matej Miná’s work is the exploration of where the survivors are now. ~ Cleveland International Film Festival

Trapped in parental delusions, Rihana falls in love with a young man with whom she carves out the beginnings of her own life. Soon, Rihana’s story awakens repressed thoughts in Zineb’s own troubled mind, and reality merges into a haunted fever-dream of fear and denial in this visually striking, psychological thriller.

POLICEMAN is a boldly conceived drama that pivots around the initially unrelated activities of an elite anti-terrorist police unit and some wealthy young anarchists. Provocative and timely, in light of recent unrest tied to social and economic inequities in Israel, this is a powerfully physical film in its depiction of the muscular, borderline sensual way the macho cops relate to one another, as well as for the emphatic style with which the opposing societal forces are contrasted and finally pitted against one another. ~ New York Film Festival
Under the cloud of a military dictatorship, a young mother and her daughter flee Buenos Aires for the seclusion of a ramshackle cottage along the windy dunes of an Argentine beach. A childhood idyll, however, soon becomes contaminated by the general political crisis, as the teacher recruits the class for a patriotic essay contest sponsored by the army—the very people that may have already disappeared Cecilia’s father—in this superbly acted and engrossingly atmospheric drama about innocence in perilous times.

Soon enough, they are faced with reality, as they come face to face with the real effects of their chosen subject. WOMAN IN THE SEPTIC TANK is a comedy about misguided ambitions, the art of making art, and the romanticization of poverty. Principal Cast: Eugene Domingo, JM De Guzman, Kean Cipriano, Cai Cortez
