Quarantined?
CLEAN! Tips for tidying up while isolated Hannah Yasharoff USA TODAY
It’s just like Mary Poppins tells us: “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You fi nd the fun and – snap! – the job’s a game.” OK, so maybe it would take more than a spoonful of sugar to entice you to scrub your toilet bowl. But these fi ve tips should help make spring cleaning tasks in the time of coronavirus quarantines less dread-inducing and more of a piece of cake. You (and maybe your family or roommates) are at home more than usual right now – might as well do something rewarding with all that time.
Fear not, fellow procrastinators. Melissa Maker, the founder of Canadian-based housekeeping service Clean My Space and author of “Clean My Space: The Secret to Cleaning Better, Faster – And Loving Your Home Every Day,” has some suggestions on how to get up and moving. “We’re in the unique position right now where you don’t have to worry about getting it all done and running out and taking care of the other things you generally have going on,” Maker says. “This really is kind of a rare and unique opportunity to really take your time with things and spread it out ... (Feel) encouraged by the fact that you do have the time, so you can take on some of those projects you would otherwise shun for more exciting things.”
1. Take advantage of having more time on your hands Getting started with an annual cleaning project can be daunting: Where do you even start?

Clean Continued from Page 1H
Here’s the order Maker suggests: ❚ Sweep the patio, walkways, clean exterior windows, light fi xtures and patio furniture. ❚ Wash interior windows (this is a good one to get the kids to help with). ❚ Clean out closets, cupboards and the pantry. ❚ Change fi lters, check furnace, carbon monoxide and smoke detector systems. ❚ Deep-clean appliances and under the kitchen and bathroom sinks.
2. Make a to-do list, then divide and conquer Start with a wish list of all the things at home you want to scrub, wash or tidy up. Then go from there, Maker recommends. You’ll fi gure out what’s feasible later, but for now, shoot for the moon. “I try not to clean the whole house at once,” author and Clean Mama blogger Becky Rapinchuk says. “I fi nd that a cleaning routine that spreads the work out over the day, week or month is much more productive and keeps the house clean most of the time versus having to do a full house clean on the weekend, when you can’t stand it anymore or when someone is coming over.” Coming up with a calendar for diff erent tasks might also help make things less daunting. Rapinchuk recommends starting by wiping counters, vacuuming, running a few loads of laundry, putting away clutter and making beds. Once that’s taken care of, she likes splitting diff erent chores into diff erent days: ❚ Monday: Bathroom day. ❚ Tuesday: Dusting day. ❚ Wednesday: Vacuuming day. ❚ Thursday: Floor washing day. ❚ Friday: Catch up on anything from the previous days you didn’t get to. ❚ Saturday: Sheets and towels day. ❚ Sunday: Upkeep those basic starter tasks.
3. Channel your inner Marie Kondo (and have the kids join you) Does that old knickknack still spark joy? As organizer extraordinaire and Netfl ix star Marie Kondo recommends, go through your belongings (be it the contents of your closet, junk drawers or basement storage): If the item you’re holding doesn’t make you happy, it’s time to say goodbye. Kondo previously told USA TODAY that this process is great to tackle with
Have your kids help out while you tackle housework. GETTY IMAGES
your kids (and a particularly good idea under quarantine). “Some parents do say, ‘My children love everything, so they can’t really let go of anything.’ But actually you’d be surprised,” Kondo says. “You’d be surprised to see how much (a child) would be able to let go of things after she sees a pile of things.” And items don’t have to be falling apart to warrant getting rid of them – things still in good shape can be sold or donated to a thrift store. Let someone else enjoy your treasures if you don’t have a real purpose for them anymore.
4. Short on cleaning products? No problem Even if you’re out of some household
cleansers, you most likely have the right substitutes on hand. For a DIY disinfectant, Maker combines one cup of water with one cup of rubbing alcohol (optional: about 20 to 30 drops of lavender or tea tree essential oils to increase antibacterial properties). For window washing, a mix of equal parts vinegar and dish soap works as well as commercial glass cleaners. Not only does it remove dirt and grease, but it kills odors and doesn’t leave streaks.
5. Don’t forget your before and after pictures Nothing like the idea of a good before-and-after comparison to push you to get results. Snapping a few clutter-
fi lled shots will make it all the sweeter when you get to the fi nal, sparkling end. Even better: Text the before shot to a friend or family member for added accountability. Or make a TikTok out of it, if you’re feeling hip. One trend that the social media app’s users are putting their own spin on: Take video a messy room, then throw what’s supposed to be an explosive (TikTokers get creative, using anything from a bottle of perfume to a tennis ball to a single shoe). Close the door just as an explosion sound eff ect goes off , then re-open the door to fi nd a newly spotless room. Cleaning may not be quite that easy IRL, but it does bring in that element of fun.

How to properly sanitize your phone Amanda Tarlton REVIEWED.COM
Editor’s Note: In this article, we use a phone sanitizing recipe that is half water and half 70% isopropyl alcohol. For those concerned about coronavirus, the CDC recommends using a mixture that is 60%-70% isopropyl or ethyl alcohol by volume, which would translate into a recipe where 2⁄ 3 of the solution (or more) is made up of 99% isopropyl or ethyl alcohol. Like most people, I’m addicted to my phone. I use it almost every minute of every day. However, not counting the occasional swipe with a Kleenex, I have cleaned my phone a total of zero times in my life. But just how gross is it? According to studies, not only is your phone much dirtier than you think, but it can also be
covered in potentially harmful bacteria. Especially with the recent outbreak of the coronavirus, now’s a good time to sanitize your phone thoroughly.
Why you should clean your phone regularly Your phone touches your fi ngers, your face, and all sorts of surfaces throughout the day – so it’s no surprise that it’s a magnet for oil, grime, dead skin cells, and bacteria. But even more alarming than that, an unclean phone can also be a haven for dangerous germs like E. coli, streptococcus, and those that cause staph infections or the fl u. In fact, one study found that the average high schooler’s phone has 17,000 diff erent types of bacteria, making it 10 times dirtier than a typical toilet seat. Yikes.
How often you should clean your phone
Is it worth buying a phone sanitizer?
Our senior scientist and germ guru, Julia MacDougall, says once a week is a good rule of thumb. However, she notes that the more you use your phone, the more frequently you should clean it. “If you have kids or multiple people handling your phone, I’d recommend cleaning it more than once a week,” she says.
You’ve probably seen UV phone sanitizers that promise to eliminate 99.999% of the bacteria on your phone. “UV light is often used to kill bacteria because specifi c wavelengths of UV light are ‘germicidal,’ in the sense that they can cause the bonds to break between molecules within the bacteria’s DNA, rendering the bacteria damaged or dead,” Julia explains. But do they actually work? She tried three diff erent sanitizers to fi nd out. The popular PhoneSoap, which has thousands of glowing reviews online, successfully killed most (and occasionally all) of the bacteria on the phone. The CareBox was a close second, leaving behind a single minor speck of bacteria. So either one will do the trick.
The best way to clean your phone Fortunately, keeping your phone germ-free isn’t diffi cult. Julia recommends this simple DIY method: “Dilute isopropyl alcohol with water, then spray it on your phone and wipe it dry with a soft microfi ber cloth.” (FYI: Isopropyl alcohol is just a fancy word for good oldfashioned rubbing alcohol.) Avoid using

regular paper towels or other rough materials that could scratch or damage your phone’s screen.

Tires are of vital importance since they are the only part of the vehicle that makes contact with the road. Yet motorists often neglect their condition and age, and the results can be catastrophic. Why having old tires on your car is a risk Ronald Montoya EDMUNDS
Tires are of vital importance since they are the only part of the vehicle that makes contact with the road. Yet motorists often neglect their condition and age, and the results can be catastrophic. In its most recently available information, the National Highway Traffi c Safety Administration says that 738 people died in 2017 from tire-related crashes. As a tire ages, small cracks in the rubber begin to develop over time, appearing on the surface and inside the tire. This cracking can eventually cause the steel belts in the tread to separate from
the rest of the tire. Tread separation can also happen to defective, underinfl ated and poorly maintained tires. Hot climates will also accelerate the aging process. Here’s what you need to know to determine tire age and what issues old tires can pose:
How long do tires last? Carmakers and tire manufacturers diff er in their recommendations on when to replace a tire. Many automakers, including Ford, Nissan, Mazda and Mercedes-Benz, tell owners to replace tires six years after their production
date regardless of tread life. Brands such as Continental and Michelin say a tire can last up to 10 years, provided you get annual tire inspections after the fi fth year. The NHTSA has no specifi c guidelines on tire age and defers to the recommendations of carmakers and tire manufacturers.
Determining the age of a tire You’ll need to locate the U.S. Department of Transportation number printed on the sidewall of the tire. Tires made after 2000 will end in a four-digit code. The fi rst two numbers represent the
week in which the tire was made. The second two represent the year. A tire with a DOT code of 1018, for example, was made in the 10th week of 2018. Tires made before 2000 end in a three-digit code that is trickier to decode, but essentially if you see a DOT number ending in three digits, the tire was made in the last century and should be immediately replaced. If you see a partial DOT number on the outer sidewall, look for the full number on the inner side. Some tire manufacturers opt to brand the number on the inside to reduce the chance of injury See TIRES, Page 7H

Chasing down an intermittent nonstarter Dear Car Talk: I have a well-maintained, 2008 Ford Fusion with 256,000 miles. Sometimes, the car does not start on fi rst, second, third or more turn of the ignition key. I’ll pump the brake and keep at it, and fi nally it starts. There’s no signs of life during these failed attempts (no sound at all). I had the battery replaced a couple of months ago, but it’s still happening. Is it the starter? Loose connections? I’m getting ready for a long road trip and don’t want to be stranded. I’d like to give the dealership some hints about what to look for in case the car starts fi ne when I take it in. What should they check?

Avoid used tires New tires can be expensive, which is why used tires are attractive to people who are strapped for cash. You’ll often fi nd used tires for sale in classifi ed ads or at tire-and-wheel shops that off er

– Christie Well, with 256,000 miles on the car, it could be a lot things. It’s like when a 96year-old comes into the doctor’s offi ce, and the doctor asks “Is anything OK?” I’m going to guess it’s not the battery, since that was just replaced. And I’m also going to guess that when they changed out the battery a few months ago, they cleaned and tightened all the cables. So it’s probably not that, either. It could be the starter motor. This is classic behavior of a failing starter. It could also be the ignition switch. The ignition switch is what you stick your key into. And after a few million uses, it can wear out, and fail intermittently. In addition, there are a couple of safety features that prevent you from starting the car and immediately plowing through your garage door. One is called the neutral safety switch. That’s a switch that prevents the car from starting if the shifter is in anything other
than Park or Neutral. As an experiment, next time the car won’t start, with the transmission in Park, try forcefully jiggling the shifter with one hand while holding the key in the crank position with the other. If nothing else, it’s good aerobic exercise. If you can get the car to start that way in Park or Neutral, that points to a bad Neutral Safety Switch. Your Fusion also has a brake-starter interlock, which prevents the car from starting unless your foot is on the brake. If that switch is out of position, or worn out, that could also cause intermittent starting issues. So this is good news for your mechanic, Christie. He’ll have plenty to choose from, in terms of where to get the money for next month’s boat payment. And you’re right to get it addressed before your upcoming road trip. These “intermittent” problems tend to become more “mittent” over time, and then per-
manent. So it certainly could strand you. If you’re not able to confi rm it’s the neutral safety switch by using the experiment I describe, ask your mechanic to take his best guess and try replacing something. You’ll have to hope that he guesses right, or that if he guesses wrong, it fails again before your bon voyage party. If it were me, I’d probably start with the brake interlock switch fi rst, since that’s the cheapest thing to try. If that doesn’t fi x it, I’d try a new starter motor. I’d try the ignition switch last. And each time you’re in there for one of these repairs, don’t stop yourself from perusing the new car showroom. Good luck, Christie. Got a question about cars? them as a low-cost alternative. The problem with used tires is that, while you can check their age, you have no idea how well they were maintained or what conditions they were used in. It is safer to avoid them entirely.
lier. A tire from the prior year is common, but anything older is likely to have a shorter life span. You have the right to request newer ones. Check the date before you drive away to save yourself the hassle. Make a tire inspection part of your routine when evaluating a used car to buy. If you fi nd that the vehicle you’re interested in has old tires, make that a part of the negotiation. The seller of the vehicle might be willing to discount the price so that you can buy new tires, or even install new tires before you pur-

If your tires have plenty of tread left but are approaching the six-year mark, it’s time to get them inspected for signs of aging. And if the tire shop recommends a set of tires, spend the money and don’t put it off . Getting rid of an unused spare or tires with plenty of tread may seem counterintuitive, but if they are too old, it is the smartest thing you can do.
