The joys, challenges of working from home

Shifting

landscapes Matt O’Brien and Mae Anderson ASSOCIATED PRESS

In the early days of working from home to prevent spread of the COVID-19 disease, some Massachusetts Institute of Technology researchers talking strategy on a video chat couldn’t help but get distracted by their team leader’s kitchen cabinets. h “There was absolutely nothing special about them except for the fact that they were in the private home of someone senior to us,” said researcher Kate Darling, who started gossiping about the cabinetry in an online back channel. hIt was a minor and welcome disruption, an early sign of bigger hiccups that offi ce workers, educators and others around the world are dealing with on the fl y as the coronavirus pandemic shuts people out of offi ces, schools, coff ee shops and co-working spaces. How to make space for all your supplies Meghan Kavanaugh REVIEWED.COM

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, people have been fl ocking to grocery stories and other retailers to stock up on the essentials, should they need to selfquarantine for the next few weeks at home. We don’t recommend hoarding large quantities of food or cleaning supplies – leave some for your neighbors – we do recognize that you may currently fi nd yourself surrounded by non-perishables with no idea where to store them. And you may fi nd yourself with even less fridge space if you follow the advice of our kitchen and cooking editor Cassidy Olsen, who says she’s currently freezing and refrigerating foods she may have otherwise kept out in a bid to extend their shelf life. “I now have a drawer devoted to alliums like onions and garlic, and I’ve started freezing all of my bread,” she says. Here are some tips on organizing your existing storage spaces to make them more effi cient, as well as some products that may help give you even more room.

are a great way to organize like items. This can be especially useful if you have roommates or family members with diff erent tastes. Simply label each bin so there are no mix-ups, and so everyone can fi nd what they need in a timely fashion. The less time spent standing in front of the fridge with the door open is also helpful for keeping temperatures low and avoiding premature spoilage.

How to maximize space in your pantry The pantry is often the fi rst space to fi ll up when stocking up on food. Cassidy recommends organizing the pantry and cabinets so that food is still accessible. “You don’t want to just stuff everything in there or overwhelm the space – you’ll forget what you have, be

less inclined to use ingredients, and just be faced with a big mess,” she says. Consider adding a rack or bookshelf for storage Cassidy recommends utilizing a rack or bookshelfstyle organizer for extra dry goods. Not only will it be helpful now, but it can always be repurposed in a different area of the home after its pantry needs are complete. “In my apartment, our cabinets are almost entirely fi lled with dishware and cookware, so we use a large open shelving unit to store most of our food that isn’t refrigerated,” she says. “This allows us to see everything we have (not great for style, but very convenient), and stack things higher.” See SUPPLIES, Page 3H

How to maximize space in your fridge Unlike preparing for a hurricane or blizzard, we can assume that refrigerators and freezers, and all other cooking appliances, will remain operational throughout a coronavirus quarantine. But to make the most of your space as you wait it out, refrigerator organization is key. Step 1: Empty and clean Start by emptying your refrigerator and giving shelves a good cleaning. Take note of any food that is expired and toss it. As our kitchen and cooking staff writer Valerie Li advises, “Use sanitizing wipes to clean out any drips or residue on the shelves and walls. Take out the bottom drawers and soak them in soapy, hot water – and take advantage of their absence to clean the walls and fl oor where they slot in. Make sure the drawers are dry before placing them back in the fridge.” Step 2: Restock with a strategy When restocking the shelves, choose placement carefully and remember that stocking a fridge to the brim can impede the air circulation it needs to keep temperatures consistent. That’s why organization expert Marie Kondo tries to keep her refrigerator 70% full at most. Keep items like eggs and milk out of the door, where they’re more prone to fl uctuations in temperature. Instead, use the door for condiments and jarred pickles and salsas. On the shelves, try to keep fresh fruits and vegetables above raw meat or seafood to avoid any chance of cross-contamination. Also be sure to move the most perishable items – like leftovers and deli meats – to the front so remember to eat them fi rst. Step 3: Organize and label everything Products like a lazy Susan turntable and fridge and freezer bins set, which we use in the Reviewed offi ce,

Supplies Continued from Page 2H

Keep cans in line Cassidy uses a cutlery organizer to keep cans in order – something that’s essential these days. Make sure to note the measurements of each section before purchasing so you get one that’s wide enough to accommodate cans. Consider using an extra freezer – or even a cooler – for additional space If you’re still short on space, you can always pick up an additional freezer or refrigerator – Cassidy recently picked up the 5-cubic-foot Magic Chef chest freezer. But if that’s not in the cards, consider purchasing a quality cooler instead. While it’s not a long-term solution, it can help free up precious refrigerator space, but you’ll be able to use it come summer time as well. We’ve tested more than a dozen of the best coolers on the market, so we can confi dently recommend a few that should be up to the task of keeping your groceries on ice. Keep in mind that coolers work best when they’re closed, so try to use them more for items you don’t need often, like condiments. Best Overall: Otterbox Venture 45 This 45-quart cooler that includes a dry storage tray was our choice for the best of the bunch. In our testing, the Otterbox Venture 45 was able to keep temperatures under 40°F for nearly fi ve days without being opened, which was 20% better than average. It’s pricier than many options available, but it proved to be sturdy – no leaks no matter how much we put it through – and it comes with a lifetime warranty. Best Value: Ozark Trail 52-Quart Cooler

The pantry is often the fi rst space to fi ll up when stocking up on food. GETTY IMAGES

With a massive 52-quart capacity, the Ozark Trail has enough room to store your groceries and then some. And at about a third of the price of the Otterbox, it was an easy pick for the best value cooler on the market. Even though it’s less expensive, it’s still a solid choice. It was able to stay under 40°F for over four days without being opened, so you can rest assured that food will be safe from spoilage. Plus, it comes with a removable wire basket, a fi ve-year limited warranty, and – should this become a fi xture of your summertime adventures – four cupholders.

Make peace with the mess This may seem counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to handle any excess food supplies is just to understand that your kitchen may not be as neat and organized as it usually is. “Face the fact that things are just going to be messy for a while,” Cassidy says. “I have a lot of anxiety around organization and keeping my space clean, but when I’m sharing a space with other people for weeks on end and we’re stockpiling food, there’s not a great way to make sure everything will be aesthetically balanced and look the way it used

to. That’s OK!” She advises using any open closet, pantry, basement, or attic space you may have to keep clutter at bay, but cautions against using that as a reason to shop more: “Don’t shop too much at any one time because you want to make sure groceries are still accessible for everyone in the community.” Follow Reviewed on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram for the latest deals, product reviews, and more. Work Continued from Page 1H

Integrating work life into the home has rarely been easy, but measures to contain the virus have brought those worlds into sudden and sharp collision. Untold numbers of Americans are shifting their day jobs from offi ces to living rooms, spare bedrooms, kitchens and basements. This massive, unplanned social experiment can strain productivity and domestic tranquility as toddlers scurry around untended and business meetings and classes shift to noisy group video chats that resemble a checkerboard of talking heads. It is also forcing many parents into unexpected new roles. Carmen Williams, a therapist in Macomb, Michigan, fi nds herself not only seeing clients sporadically, but shelling out for a babysitter, paying tuition for her seven- and 14year-old kids – and still teaching them school assignments. “I’m not an educator!” Williams said. “I’m used to helping with homework, but I am unable to teach thought-out lectures and work. It’s overwhelming!” This plunge into the unknown, accelerated by the growing number of states

ordering residents to stay home, could impact how the U.S. weathers an almost certain recession. That will also depend on how well individuals and their families can manage the complications of studying and conducting business from home – at least for the subset of employees with desk jobs and the ability to do their work remotely. Tech companies are pledging to avert more serious disruptions by increasing data capacity to handle the onslaught of newly quarantined workers and students. Tuesday mornings used to be the peak time for video conference platform Zoom, but now there’s an ongoing demand for that amount of data, said Kelly Steckelberg, chief fi nancial offi cer of the San Jose, California-based company. Steckelberg said the company has accelerated the opening of two new U.S. data centers to meet the demand and is adding servers to its existing 17 data centers around the world. Cisco, which runs the Webex video conference service, said it has prepared itself for “sustained peaks” in the U.S. after already handling a doubling of usage in Asian countries including China, Japan and South Korea. Microsoft, which asked 50,000 of its own employees to work from home in the Seattle region before Washington State sent all “nonessential” workers

home, has seen dramatic demand spikes for its workplace communications service known as Teams. Rival workplace communications platform Slack has experienced “just a massive outpouring of interest,” CEO Daniel Butterfi eld said on an earnings call earlier this month. Major phone and cable companies have agreed to open up their wireless hot spots for public use, and said they are also waiving data caps and won’t cut homes or business’ internet off because of an inability to pay. Experts have said the core of the U.S. network is more than capable of handling the virus-related surge in demand because it has evolved to easily handle bandwidth-greedy Netfl ix, YouTube and other streaming services. But people confi ned to their homes have still found it a struggle to maintain human connections. Washington, D.C. resident Joseph Sprott was just two days into a new marketing job when the offi ce went fully remote, which he said makes it harder to “ingratiate oneself ” with the new manager and team. “Now a simple ‘Come check this out’ is a three-person conference call,” he said. In the Netherlands, a team of data

scientists led by Jeroen Baas was already used to communicating remotely with overseas colleagues. But vacating their Amsterdam offi ce to limit the spread of the virus presented new challenges, so Baas started a 15-minute virtual water cooler session to try to restore some of the casual banter lost when his colleagues aren’t physically present. “It gives some time and space to talk about work or take your mind off other things, or maybe rant about what’s going on with the virus spread and people hoarding things,” he said. Darling, the MIT researcher, said she is worried about more serious problems as the work-from-home period continues for weeks or more and researchers don’t have access to their laboratories and other important tools. As more schools and childcare centers stay closed, she said, remote work will get more disruptive. Her toddler has been watching the TV show “Daniel Tiger” on repeat. “Otherwise we wouldn’t get anything done,” she said. It’s harder for Catharine Bouchard, who works for a bank in Ontario and isn’t always able to balance working and taking care of two young children, ages 4 and 10. “I cannot focus on work and am anxious as ‘F”,” she said.

BEHIND THE WHEEL

High-tech for less than $36,000 Rex Tokeshi-Torres EDMUNDS

Every year brings new technology features in vehicles. Most of them undeniably enhance a vehicle’s modern appeal and safety, such as widescreen infotainment displays and safety systems that can automatically help prevent or mitigate accidents. But these high-tech features also come with a higher price tag. The average national transaction price of a new vehicle in February was a little more than $37,000, an increase of about $5,700 in the past fi ve years, according to Edmunds data. Some of that price creep is due to the popularity of SUVs, which typically cost more than sedans. But the fact remains that if you want a high-tech car today, it can quickly get expensive. With that in mind, the experts at Edmunds have picked their favorite high-tech vehicles for under $36,000. These models get you the most for your money and still come in under the average transaction price. To get on the list, a vehicle needed to have the following features: traffi cadaptive cruise control, a 7-inch infotainment screen or bigger, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility, and a collection of advanced driver safety aids. The latter included an automatic braking system to help avoid a front collision, a blind-spot warning system to monitor the vehicle’s sides, rear crosstraffi c alert to help when backing out of parking spots and driveways, and a system to warn about unintended lane departures. The listed manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) includes destination fees. Since options on a car can vary, we’ve also recommended the trim level and equipment package that get you all the tech we’re discussing.

The Nissan Versa SR sedan features Nissan’s Safety Shield 360, a suite of advanced safety features usually found in more expensive vehicles. NISSAN

2020 Nissan Versa SR with convenience package

2020 Kia Forte GT with GT2 package

2020 Mazda CX-30 with premium package

MSRP: $19,465 The redesigned Versa sedan is small but packed with the latest tech. It comes standard with Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 suite of safety aids. LED headlights with automatic high beams also come standard, as well as a 7-inch infotainment display along with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. The Convenience package we recommend adds a traffi c-adaptive cruise control system. Other advantages to the Versa include a roomy trunk and high fuel economy. Sluggish acceleration is the car’s main drawback.

MSRP: $25,655 The Kia Forte small sedan comes with a majority of features on our list, along with an 8-inch display, lane keeping assist and automatic high beams. The Forte GT trim’s optional GT2 package adds missing elements such as the blind-spot monitor, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffi c alert, and a pedestrian detection upgrade to the standard forward collision mitigation system. We like how the Forte provides so many features for the money. Fuel economy is also high. On the downside, the Forte has a slightly uncomfortable ride.

MSRP: $29,300 The all-new CX-30 is a stylish addition to Mazda’s small SUV lineup. Get a CX-30 with its optional Premium package, and it’ll come loaded with everything in our criteria and more. You also get a system that can help steer to keep you in your lane, headlights that automatically adjust when you turn the wheel, a head-up display that shows you important information on the windshield, and an 8.8-inch infotainment screen. In addition to its technology, the See TECH, Page 7H

Gasoline is not the lubricant Honda wants Car Talk Ray Magliozzi

Dear Car Talk: I own a 2014 Honda Accord LX, and it has been a very good car. So good that I am thinking about buying a new Accord. At least I was thinking about a new Accord until I started seeing stories about the engine oil being diluted by gasoline. This does not sound like a good situation, but I am wondering how bad it really is. I would love to hear your take on this.

Thanks! – Joseph While Honda’s engineering is generally excellent, they seem to have stumbled with their 1.5 liter turbo engine, Joseph. There are a number of complaints about gasoline diluting the oil. That’s not a good situation. Gasoline is not nearly as good a lubricant as oil is, so this has the potential to shorten the life of the engine. Not to mention, it’ll cause your car to smell like the corner Exxon station. The gasoline fumes that mix with the oil are supposed to evaporate and be expunged from the crankcase. And appar-

ently, in cold weather – or if the car is rarely driven long enough to really heat up – the gasoline condenses and builds up in the crankcase until your dipstick reads: “Whoa! Drain out a quart.” Honda says the problem is limited to 2016-2018 Civics and 2017-2018 CR-Vs with that 1.5L engine. They also say that it’s limited to cold weather states. And they’ve off ered a fi x and an extra year of limited warranty coverage to buyers in 21 states. But we’ve certainly seen similar complaints from owners of late model Accords with the 1.5L engine. And Consumer Reports says they received complaints of oil dilution in summer condi-

tions from California and Texas. So we’d urge caution. If you really want another Accord, Joseph, one option would be to get the 2.0 liter engine instead. It’s a pricey option, but we haven’t seen complaints of oil dilution for that engine. And as you know, other than the fact that you’d have to join OPEC as an oil producer if you have the 1.5L engine, the Accord is an excellent car. Got a question about cars? Write to Ray in care of King Features, 628 Virginia Drive, Orlando, FL 32803, or email by visiting the Car Talk website at cartalk.com.

Tech

than its competitors, but overall it’s a smart pick for a tech-loaded small SUV.

Continued from Page 6H

2020 Subaru Forester Touring

CX-30 also has upscale interior and poised handling. The rear seats are a little snug, however, so try them out if you have taller passengers.

MSRP: $35,605 The Subaru Forester small SUV meets most of our criteria even in its base confi guration. But it’s lacking a big enough touchscreen and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffi c alert. For those, you’ll need to get the Limited or top-level Touring trim. Going with the Touring gets you a Forester with tech extras such as steering-responsive headlights, a driver distraction monitor and reverse automatic braking. Other attributes include standard all-wheel drive and a comfortable ride quality. Compared to other small SUVs, however, the Forester’s engine is underpowered.

2020 Hyundai Tucson Ultimate MSRP: $33,020 The Hyundai Tucson small SUV is comfortable and loaded with easy-touse tech. It comes standard with nearly all of our required features. LED headlights with automatic high beams are also standard. You’ll have to step up to the Ultimate to get traffi c-adaptive cruise control, but when you do you’ll

The Hyundai Tucson features a surround-view monitor, which provides drivers with a bird's-eye view of the vehicle when parking. HYUNDAI

also get a wealth of other technologyoriented features. These include a surround-view camera system to help see what is around you when you’re park-

ing, pedestrian detection, an 8-inch display and wireless device charging. Hyundai’s Tucson has less cargo space and lower fuel economy numbers
