If you are part of one of the 100 Best Companies, congratulations, and thumbs up to you!

en years ago, it was a just a vision – and one that wasn’t shared by the mainstream. The idea that being a great workplace would lead to greater financial success was pretty farfetched at the time. Wow, how far we’ve come! In 2002, we were pursuing different ways to make our vision a reality. Denise was creating the first-ever best companies list in Arizona, to recognize top employers in the Phoenix area. Lee was paving the way for a local company to become #1 on that list. Both of us were deeply committed to the mission of creating best companies for the benefit of the local economy, business, and workforce. Since our trailblazing 2003 list, we’ve seen impressive evidence that creating stronger, trust-based workplace cultures leads to business results. Despite the recession and soaring business failure rate, almost all of the 2003 list winners are still going strong – and reaping the benefits of their efforts. Our Trailblazers provide a great example of sustainability, and we’re proud to tell their stories. Having developed three awards programs in the past ten years, including Arizona’s Most Admired Companies in partnership with AZ Business Magazine, and the Top 25 Workplaces for Women in Arizona with Republic Media, we also have helped companies develop great cultures. Once they win, it’s been our honor to promote their award-winning status. At BestCompaniesAZ, PR, marketing, branding and HR are all part of the mix. Today, we’re more committed to our vision than ever. Overall, the best companies weathered the recession much better than their competitors. With the recovery well under way, we’re seeing companies hiring again, and are encouraged by the innovative start-ups that have made culture development a strategic priority. We’re happy to be growing, too. On our 10th anniversary and Arizona’s centennial year, we’re honored to recognize 100 Best Companies in Arizona. We hope you are inspired by their success and learn from them. If you are part of one of the 100 Best Companies, congratulations, and thumbs up to you!

STAR

Charles Schwab WHERE: Phoenix, Arizona YEAR ESTABLISHED IN ARIZONA: 1977 # OF EMPLOYEES IN ARIZONA: 3,200 WHY WE ARE A “100 BEST”:

E

ver since Charles Schwab & Co. was founded in the early 1970s, one of its basic principles has been to make investing more accessible and help people make strides toward financial fitness. And that includes its own employees, says Ryan Kosowsky, the Phoenix-based managing director of talent acquisition for the financial services firm. “Most Schwab employees are Schwab clients themselves,” he says, so the company makes sure they have access to great financial resources, education and one-on-one support to assist them with their own financial health and well-being. But that’s just one perk among many that have garnered Schwab a “Best of the Stars” award on the BestCompaniesAZ list of top Arizona employers. Kosowsky notes that there is also a generous wellness program that offers financial incentives for healthy behaviors like losing weight or quitting smoking as well as full-service cafeterias within the service center where workers can grab a fast bite or sit down and enjoy lunch with colleagues. Along with competitive base salary, bonuses and a nice standard benefits package, employees are rewarded with a “great 401(k) plan,” in which about 95 percent of employees participate, he says. Tuition reimbursement for education and training is also available for those who qualify. What’s more, there’s real support for the work/ life balance. There are paid vacations and holidays, a program for new mothers returning to work, a “Time for Giving” sick time fund and – wait for it – a sabbatical program. Indeed, for every five years of employment at the company, qualified employees are eligible for a month-long sabbatical in addition to regular vacation time. All of which helps explain why Schwab employees are so motivated to help their clientele realize their financial

SCHWAB EMPLOYEES MAKING A DIFFERENCE DURING VOLUNTEER WEEK

goals, Kosowsky says. But there’s more to it than that. Schwab’s corporate culture focuses on teamwork and takes a strengths-based approach when matching its people with projects, and that approach just seems to bring out the best in everyone. Kosowsky, who has been with Schwab since January 2012, grew up in the Valley of the Sun and recalls driving around and seeing the Schwab name on a building in the uptown Phoenix area for years. After 13 years of military service, Ryan targeted Schwab as his employer of choice after reading an article about the many resources Schwab provides military veterans during and after their transition to the private sector. “Everyone here plays a vital role, no matter what they do at Schwab,” he says, “and Schwab is a vital part of this community and has been for a long, long time.”

ROCK THE BRAND

H

ow have best companies changed in the past ten years? According to Lee Vikre, of BestCompaniesAZ, four trends have emerged:

These four Best Companies have succeeded in building an awesome employer brand.

THE EMERGENCE OF EMPLOYER BRANDING.  Ten years ago, most organizations thought of employer branding simply as recruitment advertising. Now, savvy companies understand that employer branding is a powerful tool to engage employees. Tony Hsieh, founder and chief executive officer of Zappos, said: “A company’s culture and a company’s brand are really just two sides of the same coin.” With the advent of social media, all employees have the ability to build – or detract from – a company’s brand. Thus, congruence between the consumer and employer branding has become essential. Silo walls are coming down as PR and HR are working more closely together.

Accounting firm CliftonLarsonAllen LLP’s robust careers site features the inspiring Project: Life, while a fun and interactive “Build-a-Boss” video illustrates their commitment to good management.

WELLNESS INITIATIVES.  As healthcare costs have risen, best companies have learned that a focus on wellness benefits everyone. Free onsite fitness classes like those offered at Dignity Health, rewards for completing annual physicals, nutrition counseling, weight loss programs, and health fairs have become popular perks.

Goodmans Interior Structures capitalizes on their “good” name by creating programs such as “Eye for the Good Guy” and “Good Threads.” Of course, they’re always looking for “good people.”

WORK-LIFE BALANCE IS TAKING CENTER STAGE.  “Get your life back!” proclaims Laser Spine Institute’s careers page. As a new generation of workers challenges the long hours and work-centric approach that has long characterized American corporate life, work-life balance programs are replacing more traditional (and costly) perks.

McMurry, a content marketing agency, created a branded internal social media site, including personal, customized logos that are designed for each employee.

A NEW EMPHASIS ON ADVANCED HIRING PRACTICES.  Best companies have realized that a strong company culture starts with leadership, but must be sustained by like-minded employees. Organizations have become more aware of the importance of focusing on hiring for culture fit and values alignment, as well as skills and experience; and are becoming more sophisticated in their assessment and interviewing techniques. At the same time, diversity efforts have become more advanced.

Quicken Loans projects a crazy-cool image, full of dynamic energy and enthusiasm that reaches well beyond the business of mortgage loans. For more info on how to successfully brand your company, visit BestCompaniesAZ.com

SOME THINGS DON’T CHANGE, HOWEVER. “Great companies are like ice cream,” Vikre says. “There are lots of different flavors, but a few essential ingredients.” Denise Gredler, CEO of BestCompaniesAZ, agrees. “Trust remains the common element in all great companies. If employees trust management and enjoy their jobs, that’s the recipe for success.”  4

HOT CAREERS When there’s a shortage of highly skilled talent, being a best company is a competitive advantage. It’s no surprise that organizations that have to compete for employees often make workplace culture a top priority. Right now, the hottest careers are found in two fields that are well represented on the Top 100 list — technology and healthcare. Want to have your pick of great workplaces? Consider these top 8 careers:

HOW DOES YOUR COMPANY MEASURE UP? Do you have what it takes to be named as a best company? It may surprise you to learn that being a great workplace isn’t primarily about pay and perks. A great company is a place where people enjoy their co-workers, trust their managers, and are inspired by their work. Visit us online at BestCompaniesAZ.com or just scan this QR code to take a brief, informal quiz to get an idea of where your company may stand in the vital areas of caring/belonging, accomplishment, empowerment, and fun.

8 Unusual Company Perks After several years of cuts, perks are making a comeback in the workplace Trips to exotic lands and unlimited expense accounts might be harder to come by these days, but being a best company doesn’t mean you have to lavish employees with costly perks. Great places to work often provide an array of unusual benefits designed to show employees they are valued.

Dog-friendly workplaces are not only fun, they are good for morale and reducing stress. With one in five offices in the U.S. now pet-friendly, dogs are often found in marketing, digital and multimedia agencies, warehouses, and smaller offices. The Lavidge Company is one example, but even the White House is a dog-friendly workplace!

2

Another stress-buster is an onsite garden. Employees can plant vegetables, fruits or herbs, and celebrate the bounty in a company cook-off come harvest time.

3

Anyone who looks forward to getting a pedicure because of the relaxing massage chair will appreciate massage chairs at the office, like the one at McMurry. A fifteen-minute break is maximized when it’s taken in a chair that kneads your tense back.

4

Speaking of massage, why not offer chair massages regularly? Often, chiropractors and wellness centers are willing to come on-site for a nominal fee or at no charge, in order to introduce employees to their services.

5

On-site auto repair services, such as Express Auto, cost the employer nothing, but make life easier for employees. Instead of spending precious weekend or lunch break time getting an oil change or brake repair, it can be done for them while they’re at their desks.

6

Drive home your appreciation by providing the keys to a company sports car, such as Infusionsoft’s Nissan Z, for a month as a recognition for an employee of the month or other high achievements.

7

Establish a monthly book club to meet over the lunch hour or right after work. Bonus points for providing food. The book club concept can also inspire a low-cost enhancement to leadership development if business-related books are discussed.

8

In-house salons for nail care, haircuts, and eyebrow grooming can save time, and help employees look and feel their best — while feeling good about their employer, too. Real-world examples: I.C.E. and Cancer Treatment Centers of Arizona.

HEART

Casa Grande Regional Medical Center WHERE: Casa Grande, Arizona YEAR ESTABLISHED IN ARIZONA: 1984 # OF EMPLOYEES IN ARIZONA: 827 WHY WE ARE A “100 BEST”:

R

ona Curphy couldn’t be happier that the family-like environment and genuinely engaged staff she gets to experience every day at Casa Grande Regional Medical Center has also been noticed by others. “I think that it was quite an honor to be named one of the 100 best companies in Arizona,” says Curphy, the hospital’s president and CEO, “and it was even doubly so to be chosen for the ‘Best of Heart’ category because we do have heart. We take care of sick and injured people at difficult times in their lives, and I think that’s what this honor reflects — how much we give to those in need.” She notes that attention to detail and customer service is backed by an impressive CGRMC statistic: an infection rate of .2 percent, compared to the national average of 2.5 percent. And because employees give so much of themselves to their patients, Curphy and the rest of the senior administrative team makes sure that the more than 800 staff members know how much they and their quality work and positive ways are appreciated. For about eight years now, she and her senior team have hosted monthly birthday breakfasts — during which they act as waiters and waitresses. “It’s our turn to serve them,” she explains, adding, “We like our co-workers! I have never walked into a place that is so friendly. We really see ourselves — our employees, the physicians who practice here, the volunteers — as one big family.” Similarly, during National Hospital Week, the senior team offers up an on-site barbecue party with all the down-home fixings — “We serve the pie,” Curphy adds – and she makes a point of coming in for the night-shift events so that all the employees realize how much they’re appreciated. What’s more, CGRMC even throws an annual barbecue bash for the emergency medical service providers who assist them every day: ambulance staffers,

police officers, firefighters and others in the line of duty. It only makes sense, Curphy says. Not surprisingly, all the hospital personnel are proponents of community service. Last year, they visited about 34 health fairs and provided more than 1,500 free, on-site tests. The senior team also serves on a variety of local boards, and the Foundation helps provide free screening mammograms for women without health insurance and assists Seeds of Hope, a free local clinic. On a related note, another inspiring project took shape when hospital employees made get well cards for patients for a Day of Service. A place to work and craft supplies were provided and every staffer got in on the act. “It was great, because everyone came together,” Curphy says. Just like family.

LOOKING GOOD—AT 107! With a long history of compassionate care, Dignity Health had its Arizona beginning with the establishment of St. Joseph’s sanitarium in 1895. Originally, St. Joseph’s offered 12 beds and was housed in a rented six-bedroom cottage. As the population of the Valley grew, the hospital expanded to meet the needs of the community. In the mid-1940s St. Joseph’s management purchased 10 acres of land at 3rd Avenue and Thomas Road, part of an old dairy farm. They were criticized for choosing land so far north of the city, but the leadership team had foresight and a keen understanding of a good business deal. A modern, spacious facility opened in July 1953, and St. Joseph’s has thrived at this same location for more than half a century.

Brave and Innovative In creating best companies, some organizations break the mold Companies build their success in different ways. Are any of these six courageous moves right for your company?

1

The leadership of Dignity Health still demonstrates foresight and innovation. In 2002, they prioritized the value of building a best company culture. Since then, they have received numerous local, state and national awards. Their patient satisfaction survey scores soared along with their employee satisfaction scores. Dignity Health is a stellar example of how building an exemplary workplace produces measurable, tangible results, helping the organization stand the test of time.

DITCH YOUR PERFORMANCE REVIEWS. Arizona author Dale Dauten wrote, “Have you ever had anything good come of doing performance appraisals? The answer is, of course, ‘no’”.Since then, a few innovative companies have ditched performance evaluations in favor of future-focused Performance Previews or Success Plans. INVITE MANAGERS WHO DON’T FIT YOUR CULTURE TO BE SUCCESSFUL SOMEPLACE ELSE. Culture fit is important in all employees, but especially so for managers. People leave managers, not organizations. Best companies offer coaching, but if all else fails, a boss that doesn’t fit the culture may need to go. PAY EMPLOYEES TO QUIT. After their first two weeks of onboarding, Infusionsoft employees are offered $5,000 to quit. “We only want people to stay if they are completely on-board with the culture. By offering them a way out, they can make the decision based on buy-in, not fear of unemployment, said Built to Last Champion Brett Gilliland. To date, no one has accepted the offer.

4

THANK PEOPLE JUST FOR DOING THEIR JOBS. Yes, they are being paid for it – but frequent, genuine expressions of gratitude elevate work from a transaction for money to a trusting, mutually appreciative relationship.

5

SCRAP YOUR HIERARCHY FOR A TEAM-FOCUSED APPROACH, like W.L. Gore. The idea of team-based workplaces isn’t new, but often teams are not implemented effectively. Changing the name “department” to “team” doesn’t cut it. Effective teams are empowered, cross-functional, and foster informal leadership.

6

OFFER UNLIMITED VACATION TIME. If you have developed a strong level of trust, you can save the time and effort involved in accruing and tracking. Your employees will likely work as hard as ever, but you won’t experience a last-minute scramble for time off at the end of the year.

Let’s Eat to Success! One way to camaraderie, creativity and productivity is through employee stomachs “Sharing meals builds communities within companies,” says BestCompaniesAZ’s Lee Vikre. “Food is very social. We all have to eat, but we only share food and drinks with our friends.” Creativity flows at meals with colleagues. For example, the concept for Gmail was reportedly created over one of Google’s famed free meals. Food subsidies, like the $2 meals at GoDaddy. com, are making a return, especially in the tech industry. Understanding that meal breaks take a bite out of productive time, some organizations may provide on-site options to keep employees at the desk longer. Whether the motive is productivity or consideration, employees appreciate the convenience. Healthy food options have become more prevalent in best companies. According to 2011 study by the Society for Human Resource Management, only 40 percent of companies promote the availability of healthy food in the workplace, but of those that did, 97 percent reported a positive response from employees. Recognizing the value of healthy eating for patients and staff alike, Cancer Treatment Centers of America’s chefs prepare quality, subsidized meals from organic ingredients, greatly exceeding expectations for “hospital food.”

Food and drink form a basis for celebrating and teambuilding at best companies. Barbeques, ice cream socials, taco Tuesdays, free food Fridays, bagel breakfasts, and theme lunches keep employees nourished and happy. Friday afternoon happy hours range from elegant wine bars set up in the café to beer-thirty in the warehouse. Either way, they provide a chance for co-workers to debrief from the week and transition into the weekend. There’s a downside to the abundance of food in the workplace, though — it’s reported employees often gain 15 pounds when starting a new job. Hey, no worries! In response, many best companies have created onsite gyms, boot-camp classes, or “Greatest Loser” contests.

H

ow do you substantiate more than a century of service? For Dignity Health Arizona — formerly known as Catholic Healthcare West Arizona — it’s by continuing a legacy of world-class, high-quality patient care, cutting-edge medical education and groundbreaking research. With Valley roots that can be traced back to 1895, Dignity Health Arizona hospitals are intertwined in the fabric of the communities they serve. It’s a legacy few organizations can match. “We’re honored that we’ve been able to serve this community since before Arizona became a state, and we look forward to continuing to provide care and innovative services to the people who live here,” says Linda Hunt, president and CEO. And Dignity Health Arizona doesn’t rest on its longtime reputation. Continuing that high level of service and pioneering approach to healthcare is surely one of the reasons the mission-driven health-care organization was recently named a “Trailblazer” by BestCompaniesAZ. Dignity Health’s culture of collaboration is another secret to its success, says Hunt. She says employee feedback and participation are encouraged at every level and through a variety of venues. For example, everyone is encouraged to attend and share ideas and feedback about the latest hospital news and issues at open employee forums hosted by hospital presidents. The feedback is then used to make changes and improvements throughout the organization. “We know our work is important and literally changes the lives of people who walk through our doors,” Hunt says, “and our mission calls us to work collaboratively to ensure that the people who’ve entrusted their care to us receive the best care possible. We stress that everyone on our team — from nurses to our environmental services staff to lab techs to physicians — plays a crucial role in patient care, in our success, and in the continuation of our mission and services.” Along with being recognized for outstanding patient

care and innovative research, Dignity Health Arizona hospitals are also frequently recognized as “Best Places to Work” both locally and nationally. Hunt says that’s due, in part, to the organization’s desire to help its employees achieve a healthy balance between their work and their lives. “We have a concierge service on one of our campuses that helps employees with everything from planning vacations, to purchasing birthday gifts, to assisting with car maintenance,” Hunt says. And it’s working. “We estimate that 90 percent of our employees have participated in at least one aspect of our employee wellness program, which includes a free walking club, yoga classes, nutrition consultations, zumba classes and Bollywood dance-inspired classes,” she says. “We even offer spiritual care programs, such as ‘lunchand-learn workshops’ and reflection and prayer services, which are attended by everyone from vice presidents of the organization to new hires.” The collaborative approach, combined with a genuine concern for its workforce and its patients, means there’s truly a sense of family. As a result, Hunt notes, it’s not uncommon for employees to stay with the company for more than 40 years, have their children in Dignity Health hospitals and have their loved ones receive care in Dignity Health hospitals. As for the future, to accommodate the growth in the rapidly changing healthcare environment, Dignity Health Arizona is looking at new ways to partner and collaborate with other organizations. For example, Hunt says they are currently collaborating with The University of Arizona Cancer Center and community-based oncologists to transform the delivery of cancer care and to establish a premiere center for ambulatory and inpatient oncology. And that’s just one of many such programs. “Right now, we have more than 100 partnerships,” she says, “and all of them, in some way, are helping us to create a healthier community and provide residents with more healthcare options or more efficient modes of service.”

Off the Beaten Path Companies changing the rules on career advancement

W

ith organizations becoming less and less hierarchical, the traditional “career ladder” is going the way of standard office hours. While opportunities for advancement still exist in great companies, the step-by-step ladder is giving way to a multidimensional career development path. Trailblazer Deloitte literally wrote the book on the “career lattice” concept, and their process of Mass Career Customization outlines a detailed process for career development. Flexible work options and other work-life balance programs are only part of the equation; career development also needs to be taken into consideration. At Deloitte, employees are encouraged to customize their careers by selecting options within four dimensions that most closely match their career objectives. Pace: How quickly may an employee be expected to progress to increasing levels of responsibility and authority? Workload: What is the quantity of work performed? Location/Schedule: Where, when, and how does the work get done? Role: What are the categories ranging from individual contributors to organizational leaders?

Best companies of all sizes often offer non-linear career paths. At Goodmans Interior Structures, career paths often resemble a game of Twister, with talented people moving from customer service to sales to design operations to management. Such lateral moves can provide a more stable knowledge base for professional growth. Whether or not a company offers a formal program for non-traditional career development, there are some things employees can do to grow their careers in a non-linear way: Reach out for new responsibilities. In today’s changing environment, new opportunities probably exist at your company that aren’t yet assigned to anyone. Learn new technologies and skills. Become an “intrapreneur.” Find a new project, process or service that could expand your company, and develop it. Create your own job. Look around you and see what needs your company has that fit your aspirations. Is there a need you could fill? In companies that are growing, you may be able to create the career of your dreams.

Say ‘Thanks’ Again and Again O

ne of the most effective methods for building a great company is also one of the least costly; say thank you more often. Here are some ideas from managers at best companies: • Start off staff meetings, one-on-one meetings or Monday mornings by asking your employees to relay something they did in the past week that they were proud of. • If you have managers reporting to you, ask them what their individual team members accomplished recently, and thank those employees personally. • Maintain a supply of gift cards in various small denominations, and give them out spontaneously accompanied with an expression of appreciation for good work and extra effort.

• Send personal thank you notes after a large project. You can also send thank you notes to families at home to show your appreciation for their patience during exceptionally busy times. • Say “wow!” when your team does something exceptional. Allow yourself to be impressed. • Be specific. “I like the way you handled that customer issue by asking her the right questions” is stronger praise than “good job today.” • Look for opportunities to praise and show appreciation. It’s human nature to see what’s wrong while taking what’s right for granted.

They realized long ago that they don’t just peddle chairs and desks — they enrich lives. “Goodmans Interior Structures works with four types of industries that have very different office environment needs,” says Goodman, president and CEO of the Phoenix-based company. “For our corporate customers, we create workplaces that help companies to be more competitive,” he says. “In health care, we know the environments we create contribute to the patient’s healing process. In higher education, we have empirical evidence that our classrooms improve student learning outcomes. For our government customers, we reduce their expenses by helping them to re-use existing

T

furniture instead of buying new furniture. “When our employees come to work, they know they’re doing something more important than just selling widgets. We are, quite literally, changing the community,” Goodman says. And not only are employees involved in numerous philanthropic and charitable organizations, but Goodmans repurposes their clients’ surplus office furniture to non-profit organizations. Being a socially responsible entity is also a company-wide goal, and Goodman was thrilled when the firm recently became one of only three Arizona companies – a trailblazer, all right – to be certified as a B Corporation. The honor indicates that a company benefits all stakeholders – the community, the environment and the public – not merely its shareholders. Everyone at Goodmans, he adds, was thrilled. “We do change the community.”

an innovative world leader, lies within Tempe’s borders but – amazingly – often goes unrecognized by the citizens in its own backyard. If you are one of more than seven million people who are served by its products and services on an annual basis, you probably know the Medtronic name immediately. Ron Wilson, General Manager and Site Leader, Medtronic Tempe Campus, notes the highly regarded electronics that the trailblazing company makes are well known in the medical community: pacemakers, defibrillators, glucose monitors and heart valves, to name just a few. The site is an acknowledged leader in implantable microelectronic design, development and manufacturing and is considered to be at the forefront of intelligent miniaturization, which translates to the patient as less invasive, smaller and more robust products. And that means more than seven million patients each year get their pain alleviated, their health restored and their life extended by Medtronic. “Every four seconds we help improve another life with a Medtronic product or therapy,” says Wilson. “It serves as both our ethical and business compass.” But the organization seeks to positively impact its employees and its community just as much, and it’s been that way since the company was founded in 1949 in a garage-based medical equipment repair shop. At the core of Medtronic is the company mission, which unites employees worldwide around a common goal. “The mission was written over 50 years ago, and not a word has changed since,” Wilson says. Indeed, the final two of the mission’s six tenets are: “To recognize the personal worth of employees by providing an employment framework that allows personal satisfaction in work accomplished, security, advancement opportunity, and means to share in the company’s success” and “To maintain good citizenship as a company.” New employees are welcomed with a “medallion ceremony,” during which they are given a medallion

that serves as a visual reminder of the company’s mission. “Our employees are constantly asking, ‘Is this product good enough for one of my family members?’ as they perform their work,” he says. “In fact, a number of our employees and their family members benefit from Medtronic devices and therapies.” As for embracing the community commitment tenet, Medtronic does that by promoting volunteerism, providing Medtronic Foundation grants to local nonprofits and community agencies and offering its own very popular take on charitable giving. “We have Community Day, which is a unique event,” says Maxine Orona, Director of Human Resources, Medtronic Tempe Campus. “Our local operation shuts down for the day to allow employees to support more than 50 community organizations across the Valley, and everyone still receives their normal pay for the day.” As further proof of the high priority the company places on community involvement, she says Medtronic also offers a $500 volunteer grant — given in the name of an employee who donates at least 25 hours of time annually — to the organization supported by an employee’s volunteer time. Around 40 percent of staffers have taken advantage of the generous offering, which has been available to qualified employees for more than 20 years. Finally, the event that literally brings both the Medtronic staff and patient community together is an emotional and inspirational occasion known as Quality Day. This day-long experience gives employees the opportunity to hear from individuals who benefit from a Medtronic device. It’s the perfect chance for the company to reinforce the importance of maintaining the high-level performance for which the company is known. Maxine says it’s a day that no employee dares to miss. “Their stories are riveting, as they share how their lives were dramatically improved or saved through the work of our employees,” Orona says. “The testimony often brings tears to our eyes.”

Meet the ‘best of the best’ R

eady to be inspired? Meet the best of the best, 100 organizations that have made Arizona a great place to live, work and play. Some of them display a proud heritage, others shine with promise for the future. All of them have created not just jobs, but cultures that nurture the spirit and unleash the passion of their employees. In 2002, creating a best place to work was often regarded as a “frill” that was nice to have, but not essential. Research and experience has shifted the tide as the best companies reaped tangible benefits from their focus on trust, in the form of elevated customer loyalty, improved productivity, and higher profits. What was developed from an instinctive belief has become a strategic reality. The field of psychology provided a framework for categorizing the 100 Best Companies. Choice Theory, developed by Dr. William Glasser, explains that people have basic psychological needs; fun, freedom, relationships, and power. BestCompaniesAZ observed that organizations also need the same characteristics in order to be successful. While all those characteristics are present in all best companies, they are demonstrated in different ways. Denise Gredler, of BestCompaniesAZ pointed out, “While great companies have some commonalities, they aren’t all alike. Strong employer brands emphasize the uniqueness within the organization.” Thus, the six categories were created: 16

TRAILBLAZERS — Arizona companies that have pioneered and sustained exceptional performance over the past 10 years. The Trailblazers represent the best of the best! FUTURE — Demonstrating great potential for growth in Arizona while building a “best company” culture, these are organizations to watch for the future. HEART — Top companies that have prospered by building relationships with employees, customers and the community, showing that they care. STARS — Demonstrating mastery and powerful pride, these top companies are at the top of their field and industry. WINGS — Innovation, empowerment, freedom and creativity characterize these top organizations. COOL — Top organizations with a strong, unique workplace culture, Best of Cool companies mix success with fun. The 100 Best were chosen because their practices have created workplaces that satisfy the basic needs, creating trust and the ability to thrive. Ten years of study and observation prepared the BestCompaniesAZ team to choose the 100 Best Companies from among Arizona’s award-winning organizations. The stories of the 100 Best Companies will inspire, instruct, and guide other Arizona organizations as the economy continues to recover and Arizona moves into a prosperous future.

CBRE WHY WE ARE A “100 BEST”: ith a Phoenix presence of 60 years, commercial real estate services firm CBRE has earned not only a sterling reputation as an industry leader, but also an impressive number of accolades and soaring client satisfaction ratings. “We are grateful for such honors, and proud to say that much of our success can be attributed to our ’RISE’ values,” said Craig Henig, senior managing director and CBRE’s Arizona market leader. “RISE,” which stands for Respect, Integrity, Service and Excellence, permeates the company’s culture. It calls for employees to treat everyone with dignity, to value their contributions and to help each other succeed. Employees are also charged to uphold the highest ethical standards in business practices,

W

to dedicate themselves to making an impact upon clients and the greater community, and to aspire to be the best in everything they do and seek continuous improvement. These four simple, yet powerful, words embody the spirit of CBRE and speak to the commitment that its creative, dedicated and tenured employees have for clients, business partners and each other. While CBRE is frequently recognized for being a superior place to work, its leaders are hardly the types to rest on their laurels. Effective communication, interaction with management and frequent meetings keep workplace performance at top levels, and the company reinvests in the future by acquiring improved technology and equipment and constantly enhancing resources — all moves designed to meet the diverse needs of CBRE’s clients.

A

lthough they do serious work with serious clients — creating uniquely smarter branches for retail banks and credit unions — the folks at DBSI, Inc. in Chandler try not to take themselves

too seriously. That would, of course, explain the “bat pole” that clients and team members slide down to get from floor to floor, the golf simulation room and “Hug Friday,” during which funloving principal John Dillon makes the rounds, offering up hugs of appreciation to those who want them. “We have a very fun and electric culture,” says John W. Smith, CEO whose forward-thinking company earned the “Best of the Future” award from BestCompaniesAZ. “But a key element of this is that we absolutely get the job done. We always start with the customer need and the challenges they face today are unprecedented. We’ve studied the changing needs of financial institutions and provided tested and proven solutions which help them become more profitable and consumer friendly and at the same time lower their operational costs.” DBSI simply knows all facets of branch banking; they have both a comprehensive and agnostic view in how they can help their customers. “We don’t offer just one solution, we don’t own manufacturing plants that keep us from being objective, we offer what works, what is proven, what is best in class and what aligns to our customers’ understood needs” said John Dillon, Principal. Yet another example of this is their opening of an Ideation Center in early 2012 that brings the best thought leadership, designs, and technologies together to optimize branch banking. There are also some elements they wouldn’t show; there’s a serious side to DBSI. Apparently, this is a private and confidential test kitchen of sorts where they are working with a client to bring to market their next generation branch. They help make all of the key refinements behind the scenes before taking the strategies

to market with their customers. “Our team members are the ones in front of our customers ensuring our value is delivered. Our success starts with respect for what they do,” says Jim Ransco, Principal. “Employee satisfaction leads to customer satisfaction. The philosophy that John and Debra (Dillon), who founded this company, have is this: We’re in this together.” A big reason that’s so is the team-oriented environment, which shows personnel that they are trusted and valued. Smith likes to say that DBSI’s company flow chart is the opposite of what you might see at other firms. Flip it, he says and you understand DBSI’s approach: the team members are at the top, not the execs. In 2011, for example, when most companies were cutting back on benefits, DBSI amped up its benefits package. Coincidentally — or not? — the 14-year-old company also gained more than 45 new clients, completed approximately 2,500 projects and launched a new web service to rave reviews that year. And because they have made it known that there is room for growth within the company (there’s that forwardthinking approach, again), many employees who started in positions they have since outgrown are now working in more strategic roles. Ransco says when team members see a potential for greater reward, and challenging work, they tend to stay with the company longer. As a result, DBSI has a very low turnover rate. Of course, while recognition and appreciation is motivational, everyone knows financial perks never hurt either. “I think we get a high level of performance from our team because we reward them for that great performance and recognize it by sharing profits with them,” says Debra Dillon. And what’s more forward thinking than that?

Cancer Treatment Centers of America has it made “Our people are our biggest differentiator,” says Staren, president and CEO of CTCA’s Western Regional Medical Center in Goodyear, adding that they absolutely have to be in order for someone with cancer to get on a plane and travel hundreds of miles for medical care, as typical CTCA patients do. “We spend the time to find the right people, and then we pay attention to developing a culture for them to thrive in, recognizing that this will lead to an environment that will be better for our patients.” CTCA, a national organization comprised of regional medical centers that treat adult cancer patients, has a rather unique workplace culture and that’s surely one reason it’s drawn the attention of BestCompaniesAZ. For starters, he says employees are called stakeholders “because we believe that giving them an individual stake in the business from the beginning ultimately leads to higher employee satisfaction and better performance.” New CTCA stakeholders are welcomed into the organization through a three-day “on-boarding experience,” Staren says, called “Hope, Joy and Pride.” While established stakeholders wear silver CTCA logoshaped pins on their ID badges, new stakeholders wear light green pins the first 30 days of employment. That way, he notes, others can reach out, ask how they’re doing and offer assistance during those first few weeks. “It’s our way of offering the best care we can,” Staren says. But that caring approach isn’t only reserved for new hires. All stakeholders take part in an incentive compensation plan, which has paid out in the double digits for everyone at the Goodyear location since it opened in December 2008. And there are other perks, like $600 worth of dietary supplements each year through

the CTCA pharmacy, discounts at weight loss and fitness centers and access to an internal medicine clinic. To help stakeholders “recharge,” the hospital offers on-site, 15-minute massages once a month. “On purpose, we have people who are hard-wired to deliver our mission, vision and promise to our patients,” Staren explains. “They’re highly engaged and display an unwavering commitment to our patients.” Perhaps one of the most inspired aspects of CTCA is the “daily alignment,” a 15-minute time-out that all stakeholders in every department, and during every shift, take each workday. It’s a time to review the vision and mission statements along with the Patient Promise, but it’s more than that; it’s a chance for folks to connect and align their focus on the patients and caregivers they serve. “It’s an opportunity for us to reflect on the work we’re doing here,” says Staren, “and to reflect on the stakeholder bond, the relationship each of us has with one another.”

Orchard Medical WHY WE ARE A “100 BEST”: obin Orchard’s leadership style seems to come from the best source possible: the Golden Rule. A registered nurse who’s worked her share of Thanksgivings and, inevitably, the Friday afterward, she sees to it that Orchard Medical Consulting employees not only get the holiday off but also the following day – paid, of course. It’s one way she shows her appreciation, in addition to niceties like gift cards, lunches, employee outings, and a springtime ham. “It’s so important that I show my team how much I appreciate each of them. It goes without saying, without them, I wouldn’t be here,” says Orchard, who opened her Phoenixbased medical case management firm in 2001 and has grown it from one nurse to more than 40 full-time employees, including her daughter,

R

and 200 subcontractors. Orchard keeps everyone in the loop by holding monthly staff meetings on WebEx, an idea inspired by an employee satisfaction survey, and proof of how she and her core team of managers encourage communication. “We really do listen,” Orchard says. What’s more, she’s a big proponent of community service and is President of Kids’ Chance of Arizona, a non-profit organization that provides college scholarships to children who have lost a parent through a work-related incident. Orchard’s thrilled when employees support Kids’ Chance, but she’s happy with any charitable cause they champion – and backs it with a company donation. “I have the most generous and fun group of people I could ever hope for,” she says.

Whether it’s through a phone call, email or even a Twitter message, every day our team members are on the front lines of delivering the FedEx “Purple Promise” – which is “to place FedEx customers at the center of all we do” – ensuring that every customer experience is an outstanding one. FedEx TechConnect is honored its Phoenix customer service operation has been named to the BestCompaniesAZ for 2011 and 2012, but note: This same support center has been consistently championed by its team members – and the local business community – as a top workplace, and has been recognized companywide for its service delivery. More than nine million shipments pass through the FedEx network every day, and the Phoenix site plays a critical role in ensuring that every package is treated as a special delivery. And every day, FedEx TechConnect is working on new ways to improve. For example, they’ve now aligned the Phoenix support center with the FedEx sales teams across operating companies, assisting new customers with setting up their accounts, handling supplies and answering shipment questions. Doing so has alleviated sales managers of approximately one hour a day in customer service support, leading to improved efficiency and allowing more time for sales leads and activation. And the “First Call Resolution” strategy aims to have each customer experience handled in just a single phone call, reducing the amount of hold times, transfers and call-backs. This goal has significantly reduced the volume of calls and improved the customer experience. To further ensure that all customers receive the highest level of service possible, FedEx TechConnect promotes a people-first culture that recognizes commitment,

encourages teamwork and appreciates diversity. Every year during “National Customer Service Week,” the company rallies team members in a weeklong celebration filled with activities and recognition events, celebrating its customer service role and recognizing employee contributions. Collaboration is exhibited through what they call “CAT,” (Customer Advocate Team) which serves as a middle ground between representatives and managers, a program that’s designed to improve the customer experience and provide career growth for customer service representatives. As for diversity, it’s a critical element to our organization, and the fact that the Phoenix support center boasts both Spanish and Korean bilingual representatives speaks to the commitment they have to the wide range of FedEx customers and the diversity of our team members. FedEx TechConnect has also been recognized as a top workplace for women the past two years, and that’s a further testament to our company’s people-first culture.

National Bank of Arizona WHERE: Phoenix, Arizona YEAR ESTABLISHED IN ARIZONA: 1984 # OF EMPLOYEES IN ARIZONA: 962 WHY THEY ARE A “100 BEST”:

A

lthough it has opened over 70 branch offices around the state since being founded in Tucson more than 27 years ago, National Bank of Arizona still has a friendly, local feel – and that won’t ever change. “I think that the biggest single thing that stands out about this company is its community focus,” says Keith Maio, president and CEO. “We think back to our roots, and we want to retain that community identity.” Maio says National Bank of Arizona does that by going that proverbial extra mile and decentralizing operations when possible. It’s that kind of thinking that’s earned the company the “Best of Heart” award from BestCompaniesAZ. Maio knows, for example, that customers enjoy opening up a phone book and seeing the number for their branch, not a number to a call center, and actually being able to talk to the person with whom they do business. And he knows that there are some banking decisions that, even though protocol may typically call for getting clearance from someone higher up the chain-ofcommand, really can be made at the local level. It’s all in the name of providing top-notch service for the client. “We do what’s right for the customer,” says Maio, who’s been with National Bank of Arizona for 20 years. “It’s not necessarily the most efficient model, but we believe it’s the most effective model.” While the bank offers the typical employee-recognition programs based on sales goals, it also encourages volunteerism and a healthy work/life balance and hosts events such as an annual employee golf tournament, picnics and barbecues – “I try to stay away from the grill when it’s May,” he quips – it’s not those offerings of which Maio is most proud. Rather, it’s the company’s various talent development programs that really please him, as developing thoughtful bankers and community leaders is not only the bank’s focus, but also his own.

FROM LEFT TO RIGHT: BRENT CANNON, CURT HANSEN, DEBORAH BATEMAN, DIANNE JAMES, MARK YOUNG AND KEITH MAIO

For example, the LEAD program gives budding leaders a year’s worth of experience in working with established bankers on a variety of projects, which are then presented to the bank’s executive committee. The bank also offers an officer candidate program, which Maio says larger institutions have all but jettisoned, which is unfortunate because “we need really good generalist bankers that understand all facets of banking.” Finally, there’s the True Partner Path, a popular mentorship program. It’s these kinds of things that have led to National Bank of Arizona being rated tops by Arizonans for the past several years. “I’d say that validates our approach – statewide customer recognition of how we approach a business that’s had a lot of black eyes these days,” he says.

ScriptSave WHY WE ARE A “100 BEST”: ori Bryant has a nickname for the superior service that staffers at ScriptSave provide: “the prize inside.” Because, she says, most people aren’t sure what to expect from a consumer pharmacy benefits management company. But thanks to the Tucson-based company’s mission, which focuses on serving others, ScriptSave’s nearly 70 full-time employees dazzle customers daily and consistently exceed expectations. “We frequently have clients say, ‘We didn’t realize what we were getting – you guys are unbelievable!’ ” says Bryant, president and CEO of the 17-year-old firm. That’s what happens when you take the time to find “smart, capable people,” she adds. And because ScriptSave values innovation, creativity, fun and meaning, employees also get

to display their brilliance during two annual, charitable efforts, says Cyndi Sparks, director of Organizational Development. During “Fun Fridays,” on paydays throughout summer, department-oriented teams raise money for a variety of non-profit organizations. During winter’s “Pay It Forward” event, randomly formed teams receive around $900 from the company and must maximize the funds – through additional fundraising or other resourceful efforts, if desired – and then bestow them upon an organization or family in need. “This type of team-building activity really does key into our cultural values, which include service, leadership and innovation,” notes Bryant, who initiated Pay It Forward a few years ago out of gratefulness for ScriptSave’s success in spite of the waning economy. “And it’s true that the more you give, the more you get back.”

t’s no surprise to Don Smith that SCF Arizona has landed on the BestCompaniesAZ list. After all, as president and CEO of the state’s largest workers’ compensation insurer, he points to the company’s 85-year history of helping and connecting with Arizonans, particularly those in small businesses. SCF’s own employees also enjoy that same caring attitude, he adds, which is evident in the programs that recognize staffers’ exceptional service.

Consider, for example, what happens to those whose contributions to the Bright Ideas suggestion box are implemented. Balloons in hand, Smith approaches an employee’s desk and proceeds to lavish gift cards and kind words upon the recipient. “We try to find out when people do things above and beyond,” says Smith, who clearly enjoys the opportunity to recognize good work. “I love doing it because they’re always so surprised.” He is also pleased in the way SCF helps employees improve their lives. Qualified applicants may use the education reimbursement program to pay some of the costs related to two- and four-year college courses, master’s degrees and certification programs. Impacting someone’s life in this way truly moves Smith, who recalls a meeting he had with entry-level employees. A young woman, he says, said she was a single mother who had never dreamed of attending college but now that she had some help, well, it was becoming a reality. “If I don’t do anything else good in this company,” Smith says, his voice trailing off, “that’s going to be in my memory.” SCF has also given its employees a leg up by helping fund their health savings accounts, which were instituted about two years ago. Smith says the assistance has made the transition to the higher deductible easier, especially for lower-income employees. In addition, for the past three years, there’s been an on-site health clinic at the company’s headquarters for employees and their families.

DON SMITH

A visiting nurse and nurse practitioner are available eight hours a day, five days a week – and it’s free. And while charitable work is not a mandatory requirement of employment, Smith and SCF certainly encourage it. Smith serves on several local boards, the company has a matching (up to $500) employee donation program and – perhaps as a result of his leading by example – nearly half of the nearly 400 SCF employees also participate in charitable efforts and serve on about 50 boards. “I feel the leader at the top has to walk the walk, not just talk the talk,” says Smith, who notes SCF also runs a robust United Way campaign, matching 100 percent of employee contributions. “Unsung heroes? I have 380 of them.”

JPMorgan Chase WHY WE ARE A “100 BEST”: When a JPMorgan Chase employee networking group comprised of military veterans discovered that a charity helping homeless veterans needed better transportation, they contacted the bank’s auto finance department. Weeks later, the charity had a pickup of its own. And, at Chase Homeownership Centers in Phoenix and Tempe, dedicated loan counselors work face-to-face with families who are struggling to make their mortgage payments. Since 2009, they have provided nearly 10,000 customers options, support and dignity. These are just a few examples of how JPMorgan Chase and its nearly 12,000 employees offer Arizonans excellent customer

service every day and impact the community in a positive way. The company’s success due to its people, employees who not only do their jobs well, but – like local leaders Joe Stewart and Mary Martuscelli – serve the public as volunteers and on boards of non-profit organizations. In fact, The JPMorgan Chase Volunteer Leadership Group has organized more than 350 volunteer outings, walks, building projects and supply drives since 2010. And JPMorgan Chase strives to do right by them, offering workplace benefits such as flexible schedules, a back-up child care center and on-site healthcare. What’s more, the bank has hired more than 1,000 Arizonans in the past 18 months alone and continually seeks talented individuals.

A ‘walk off’ chat with CEOs of Arizona Diamondbacks, Phoenix Suns BestCompaniesAZ caught up with Derrick Hall of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Brad Casper of the Phoenix Suns, who have a wealth of knowledge about how to create best companies. True to their “Best of Heart” winning status, they were willing to share their ideas. Here are two of their secrets: CREATE AN EMPLOYEE-FOCUSED CULTURE. Hall often says, “The customer does not come first” and is met with raised eyebrows. He elaborates, “I believe the employees come first. If we respect our employees in a positive setting, they, in turn, will treat the customers the way we expect them to be treated”. Adds Casper, “A great workplace provides the soil for unleashing the greatness that lies within individuals.”

LEADERSHIP IS VITAL. “Leadership style isn’t industryspecific. Being authentic, communicative, visionary, empowering, and transparent transcends companies and industries”, states Casper, who has held the CEO position for diverse organizations. Hall agrees; “Every company would benefit from the culture we have created. Our productivity, morale, and revenues have never been higher, and I do not believe it is merely coincidental. What company in any industry would not want to experience the same results?” Whether it’s a winning season or not, Arizonans can be proud of what our sports teams do in the community.
