If you grew up in the Midwest as I did, April often brought torrential rains, chilly breezes and, yes, even snow. Not here in sunny AZ. Whether picnicking at the park, relaxing in your backyard, or raising a toast at a local restaurant’s outdoor patio, April is prime time for enjoying our gorgeous climate. Picnic tables are tucked in along the path and trail system throughout DC Ranch; pack a snack, hop on your bike, and cycle down the paths in search of a place to settle down for an open-air lunch under a palo verde. If having someone else serve up a savory meal is more your taste, venture to one of the many outdoor dining options here in North Scottsdale; see pages 10-11 for ideas. Options abound—no midwestern parkas needed. Salud!

Ranch Updates Ranch Association Annual Meeting

N

ewly elected board members will be announced at the Annual Meeting on Monday, April 5 at 6 p.m. via Zoom. There are 7 candidates vying for four open positions. Here are a few of the board’s 2020 accomplishments: • A budget plan and monthly assessment schedule was created for the Pioneer neighborhood. • Board terms were amended from two to three years, enacted staggered terms and required that the vice president be a Board member.

• The definition of excessive speeding in the Standards for Conduct to include streets adjacent to park areas. Driving 11 mph or more over the posted limit in these locations will result in a $300 fine on the lot owner for the first offense. A second speed photo camera was also purchased. • Allocated funding to become a Firewise site in 2021 to be decided by the incoming Board of Directors and guided by resident sentiment.

Community Standards Corner:

Pets Off-leash (DCR-13) and Pet Waste (DCR-14) One of the great joys of pet ownership in DC Ranch is having companionship while enjoying the beautiful outdoors. It is important to know that when pets are taken out beyond the confines of your home, they are to remain on a leash at all times. This is not only a regulation in the Community Standards but is also a city and county ordinance. The neighborhood parks and greenbelts may seem like a sensible place to let pets run freely, but these are not dog parks and should not be treated as such. Equally as important is picking up after your pet. That too is part of the Standards for Conduct and a city and county law. DC Ranch has installed many pet waste stations throughout the community to help encourage residents to dispose of their pet’s waste properly. Please be considerate of others by following this neighborly gesture. The Association rewards DC Ranch pet owners who take the PUP (Pick Up Poop) Pledge with DC Ranch-branded pet gear, including a doggie bandana, leash and waste bag holder. Visit dcranch.com/dc-ranch-pup-pledge to learn more.

DC Ranch security management changes To make the best use of talents and assets, security partner Anderson Security Agency will be making adjustments to their security management’s organizational structure. Jason Fredrick will take the helm as Security Services Manager, reporting to Executive Jason Frederick Director Darren Shaw and Security Liaison Mike Wells while managing the 44-member security team. Current manager Steve Enteman will transition to the security team’s training instructor position. Enteman spent much of his career conducting law enforcement training programs and was named the 2015 Arizona Department of Public Safety Instructor of the Year.

• A one-year contract awarded for on-site management services of the Villas at Desert Parks Village sub-association.

• The 2021 operating budget, reserve plan and assessment schedule increasing the Ranch Master monthly fee by $8.45. • Passed a resolution recommending removal and replacement of 670-street lined sissoo trees in Arcadia at Silverleaf.

Crime prevention program continues May 5 The Community Safety Series is growing in popularity as more residents from the Scottsdale Police Foothills District learn of this unique collaboration on crime prevention. About 90 residents from North Scottsdale communities attended the March 3 program, learning the best techniques for keeping yourself and loved ones out of harm’s way. Crime Prevention Officer Rob Katzaroff is the series presenter, and DC Ranch is the host. The next presentation on Teen Substance and Drug Abuse is Wednesday, May 5 at 5 p.m. via Zoom. To register for this free event, visit DCRanch.com/safety-series or scan the QR code above with your phone’s camera. Additional upcoming topics include Teen Drivers and Safety on Aug. 4 and Surviving Active Critical Incidents on Oct. 13. Be sure to invite friends from neighboring communities to this informative virtual event.

THE LIVING ROOM

Since 2014, the Living Room Wine Cafe & Lounge on Market Street at DC Ranch has been serving guests the best in Mediterranean snacks, tapas, happy hour and dinner, delighting in pairing each item with offerings from its extensive wine list (they have great beers and sangria, too!). And though its name is Living Room, it could very well be called outdoor oasis thanks to its bright orange umbrellas and wrap-around deck with cozy furniture and intricate stone and wood accents. At night, the strung lights throughout DC Ranch light the night sky and create an everso-romantic ambiance. livingroomwinebar.com

COOPER'S HAWK WINERY & RESTAURANT Been dreaming about wine country but unable to go amid COVID-19? Cooper’s Hawk has you covered! Though you cannot tell from the outside, the newly opened restaurant in North Scottsdale features a full-scale wine tasting room and wine shop in addition to a full-service restaurant, ample bar, and outdoor patio space inside. The best part: when you are seated on the massive, covered patio with open-air all around and under heaters, if needed, you can start your evening with a full-on wine tasting! There are flights of red, white, sparkling and rose wines made from grapes sourced specifically for Cooper’s Hawk from across California and the Pacific Northwest. chwinery.com

THE AMERICANO

Hidden gem alert! Now, most locals have heard the buzz about Scott Conant’s 7,000-square-foot authentic Italian steakhouse—in the vein of the iconic Palm Restaurant—that opened last year. Folks rave about the menu, which is equal parts

love letter to hand-made pasta, rich sauces (hello, truffles!), butter-drenched steaks, out-of-this world cocktails, and dreamy interior with its dark booths and oversized art pieces. But only those “in the know” frequent The Americano’s lush, poshest of patios. Open-air on the sides with a roof covered in refurbished wood (and heaters for when needed) and a black-and-white tile floor, the vibe is coastal and European. It almost feels like you are enjoying an evening with George and Amal Clooney at their estate overlooking Lake Como. theamericanorestaurant.com

There are million-dollar views, and then there are the views from Onyx, which are priceless. There are currently 15 students (20 max) in the Yoga Basics class that meets masked and distanced every Tuesday and Thursday morning at The Homestead Community Center. LUXURY DEFINED

Before becoming a full-time yoga instructor, Chapman spent over 10 years working in the corporate world. As a mom of three kids, she knows all too well the stress and anxiety that can occur with deadlines, competing priorities and maintaining a balance between work and home.

“Yoga is for everybody. It helps release tightness and restrictions by focusing on one’s breath while moving through poses,” she says. Every class incorporates seated stretching and some meditation. Pre-sanitized blocks and straps are available for use.

THE KEY BENEFITS OF YOGA HAVE BEEN SUPPORTED BY SCIENCE IN RECENT YEARS: • Increases flexibility • Helps build strength • Improves posture • Keeps joints healthy • Reduces stress • Lowers blood pressure • Improves breathing • Encourages the body’s natural healing process

The Homestead Playhouse heads outdoors for Matilda JR.

Servicing the DC Ranch and Silverleaf areas.

BY LINDSAY VANEGAS | COMMUNITY COUNCIL

n a cool day in January, more than 40 young residents arrived at their designated time at The Homestead, showcasing their greatest talents in front of a group of local theatre directors to audition for DC Ranch’s spring theatre production of Matilda JR. Jitters melted away, the cast was selected, and rehearsals for the play began just a few weeks later. The 25 residents who create the cast of this imaginative musical are ages 8 to 16. Along with the directing team, they have worked very hard over the last few months to create an amazing piece of theatre to share with the community.

This year’s production has been a unique challenge amidst the global pandemic. During each rehearsal, cast and crew wore masks, temperatures were checked, they rehearsed outside when possible and worked in small groups while staying socially distanced. The show must go on, as they say! Each week, everyone persevered, learning intricate music, blocking scenes, and choreography to the show’s numerous scenes and 12 musical numbers. “Cast members didn’t let the COVID constraints hold them back. They are just so happy to be together and to have a creative outlet,” says director Jennifer Gantwerker. “We could see their beaming smiles shine through the masks.” Based on Roald Dahl’s novel, Matilda JR. is a tale of imagination, resilience and courage. The play follows Matilda Wormwood, a witty young girl with

special powers. Her cruel parents and the villainous head of her school, Ms. Trunchbull, are no match for Matilda; she fights for what is right in the world and finds new friends along the way. This heartwarming and fun production is sure to enchant audience members of all ages. Cast member Abigail Reiss says, “I am very excited to be a part of this production with new friends, new teachers, new emotions and new feelings. I look forward to learning something interesting every time I come to rehearsal.”

Please support the efforts of these young residents and enjoy this entertaining musical on the outside lawn at The Homestead Community Center on the following dates: Thursday, April 29 | 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 30 | 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 1 | 3 and 6:30 p.m. Sunday, May 2 | 3 p.m. Tickets are $12 for youth ages 12 and under, $17 for adults. Ranch Topics

Volunteer Spotlight:

Anne Barker

It takes a dedicated team from all internal departments to make DC Ranch such a special place to call home. But there’s also a team of resident volunteers that makes DC Ranch top-notch and they deserve to be recognized. Meet new Neighborhood Voting Member Ann Barker representing residents along Wingspan in Silverleaf.

Why did you decide to become a NVM? To make sure that our neighborhood will have a voice in issues that impact our community. In addition, I wanted to gain a better understanding of how decisions are being made regarding Silverleaf and what initiatives we can take to improve our surroundings.

What’s the best feature about your neighborhood?

How nature surrounds us. There are beautiful views of the McDowell Mountains from almost every vantage point. The sunsets are like nowhere else in the world; they’ll take your breath away. Wildlife abounds as well. It’s not uncommon to see deer, bobcats, owls, hawks, and, of course, javelinas. Some critters are more welcome than others, but it comes with this amazing landscape. There are beautiful rock outcroppings, some with petroglyphs, others with stunning mineral deposits and thus color palettes, all amongst the majestic saguaros that date over 100 years.

What’s a typical day in your neighborhood?

A typical day may mean a walk down around to the Stone House and around the lake park or a hike out to the nature trails (Inspiration Point/Windgate Pass). The trails in the McDowell Sonoran Preserve are so accessible from our area. I also take advantage of golfing at Silverleaf whenever I can. The course is one of the best in Arizona. If you’re a golfer, you’ll understand why it’s always ranked among the top and used as a practice facility for many PGA Tour players. I didn’t even golf until I moved here, and now I believe it is becoming my “healthy" obsession.

What is your biggest challenge?

Educating our households as to what is happening in the area and the reasoning behind decisions.

How is your neighborhood dealing with COVID?

Many are staying healthy by walking and hiking and taking advantage of our weather. Some families have primary homes in other states with colder weather that limits their access to the outdoors. These households came to Arizona early and are also staying later to take advantage of a more welcoming climate. You also hear of a lot of new home cooks or others upping their game in the kitchen, everything from sourdough bread to green chili. Many individuals are anxious to get vaccinated as soon as possible or are volunteering at the stadium to get earlier access to the vaccine. Once inoculated, we’ll see a big shift in folks wanting to travel.

BY REBECCA ZANDARSKI | MCDOWELL SONORAN CONSERVANCY

or thirty years, the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy has served as a steadfast steward for the Preserve. Some may be wondering: What came first, the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy or the McDowell Sonoran Preserve? The Conservancy, founded in 1991, was instrumental in the formation of the Preserve four years later and its ongoing existence. For people across the Valley and beyond, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve has become a deeply meaningful and special place, all thanks to the Conservancy and its supporters’ work.

Looking forward to the next 30 years

For the city kid living in downtown Phoenix, it’s an unforgettable introduction to Arizona’s wilderness —a far cry from the city’s seemingly endless concrete, asphalt and steel. Active local families use it for outdoor recreation and a much-needed escape from the everyday routine. Retirees contemplate a life’s work on the Preserve’s winding trails, binoculars in hand, listening for the characteristic tap of a Gila Woodpecker. The scientific community uncovers a wholly new meaning at the Preserve. The slice of land and

critical wildlife corridor provides a peek into the sometimes-unexpected vibrancy and resiliency of life, revealing the importance of species who call the Sonoran Desert home. It has become a crucial destination for hands-on research and educational opportunities, helping us learn why and how to protect these desert environments across the globe.

The Conservancy has worked tirelessly to ensure the Preserve continues to take on more meanings as children, students, families, scientists, retirees and countless others explore this picturesque corner of undeveloped desert—a precious resource that is increasingly hard to find.

Our work is continually evolving to meet the needs of a shifting environment and community. One thing that has remained constant, however, is our gratitude. Whether you’ve volunteered with us, donated, explored the Preserve or simply appreciated our efforts from afar, we couldn’t have done it without your support. Reaching 30 years is nothing short of a collective effort, requiring broad public support for the conservation of natural lands.

Stay tuned throughout 2021 as we will explore the successes and hurdles that made us the organization we are today. We’d love to hear more about what the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy means to you and how it has positively impacted your life. Share your experiences with the Conservancy with the hashtag #MSC30Years to show your support and join us in celebration.

BY LYLAH LEDNER | THE SIMPLE FARM

ver wonder where your products come from? Specifically, the ingredients for the products you put on your face? Ever think about how they are manufactured and the process your product has gone through; from the ingredient source to the lab, the bottling and then into your hands?

In 2017, after years of tending a family farm and making fresh goat milk caramels (which I still do), I became involved in the slow beauty and skincare movement. According to Cult Beauty, farm to face skin care is a growing trend. For us, it’s not a bandwagon we jumped on—it’s what we’ve always done. We wanted total control over as many plant ingredients as possible, and so the only way we knew to do that was to grow them ourselves.

From the windows of our farm and lab, we watch the German chamomile, calendula, mallow, moringa, dandelion, nettle, hibiscus, lavender and more grow through each season. We control

the ingredient production to ensure maximum potency of our botanicals. These ingredients are grown with sustainability principles and organic standards, giving you the best, most potent products for your skin.

From farm

The ingredients are gathered from our three acres here in Scottsdale and responsibly sourced from a small group of suppliers that work with other farms from around the world. There are no pre-made bases. No preservatives. No toxins. No gluten.

to face

Every product is handcrafted. The plants go through a process similar to effleurage, in which the whole plant is infused into our foundation oils in a controlled environment with the temperature kept consistent for four to five weeks. There are no shortcuts. All bottling and labeling is done by hand and packaged and sent to you from right here, just a few miles down the road.
