Maintenance Services Department This professional management team is responsible for initiating, planning, executing and completing all reserve projects. In 2022, there are $2.3 million in neighborhood and Association reserve projects. Listed here are the planned projects: plan started mid-February in the Arcadia neighborhood. These areas will be the defensible space that has no sidewalks within 50 feet.
Defensible Space Walls/view
fences without sidewalks within 50' of homes with lot defining or backyard walls.
Firewise Program Much of the Southwest is considered a high-hazard fire environment. Based on recent history and experience, these areas possess all the ingredients necessary to support large, intense and uncontrollable wildfires. Firewise is a National Fire Protection Association program that encourages communities to work together to learn to adapt to living in the Wildland Urban Interface (WUI). The goal is to create conditions that reduce wildfire intensity in the community and neighborhoods and to prevent home ignitions. The program encourages the development of defensible and survivable space and the prevention of disastrous wildfires. DC Ranch has partnered with the Scottsdale Fire Department in developing a Firewise program and the first phase of the approved

Plant Enhancements, Turf Renovations and Tree Replacement The Ranch Association Landscape Team maintains all of the landscape in common areas of DC Ranch. Along with the normal day to day maintenance and upkeep, this also includes plant enhancements, turf renovation and tree replacements that are needed throughout the year.
Furniture Replacement
High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) furniture will replace the teak furniture currently in many neighborhood parks. Due to delays in materials and manufacturing, the second phase order was delayed. A partial shipment was expected in March, with the remainder in May. The neighborhoods that are part of this order include Camelot, Country Club (4.23), Desert Haciendas, Haciendas, Rosewood and Terrace Homes East. The third phase order, expected in July, will be for Arcadia, Country Club, Horseshoe Canyon and Windgate.
Playground Structure Renovations
As part of preventative maintenance for all park playground structures and equipment, a safety inspection is conducted twice per year. During these inspections, safety compliance is reviewed and recommendations are provided for any needed repairs. In 2022, there are reserve projects
for improvement to park playgrounds in Arcadia, Desert Haciendas, The Estates, Park and Manor, Terrace Homes East and Terrace Homes West.
Road Maintenance/ Seal Coating and Sidewalk Replacement
There are approximately 50 miles of private roads that the Ranch Association is responsible to maintain. Pavement maintenance requires the use of a third-party consultant, who has developed a 25-year plan with budget and reviews the roads on an annual basis. This includes patching, crack filling, seal coating and repaving of the streets. This year, paving maintenance (repairs and sealing) is planned for Arcadia and Windgate. For sidewalk replacement, the 2022 reserve budget includes The Estates, Horseshoe Canyon and Terrace Homes West.
Camera and Technology Equipment Replacements/ Upgrades
Maintenance of computers and cameras throughout DC Ranch is ongoing and often requires replacement of equipment with new technology. Older computers and cameras that have exceeded their life expectancy will be upgraded this year in Arcadia, Country Club, Horseshoe Canyon and Windgate.
Home and Landscape Expo The Ranch Association is hosting the annual
Home and Landscape Expo on April 20 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Desert Camp Community Center. There will be a Firewise presentation by the City of Scottsdale at 6 p.m. Vendors will provide advice and tips on home landscaping, irrigation and tree maintenance. horse track season, with famous races such as the Kentucky Derby and Ascot. These conjure up visions of preppy pastel dresses paired with fabulous hats, and men dapperly dressed in ways they don’t do much these days. What does this have to do with the arts? It’s the perfect time for wearable equestrian accessories, a collectibles category with items varying in value from $200-$30,000. Let’s look at some examples. Hermes. The name instantly connotates elegance. Originally a livery maker, this line is renowned for its equestrian designs on scarves, clothing and jewelry. Their often horse themed items are instantly recognizable and world famous. Retired scarf designs can become quite coveted and pricier than those currently retailing. The most expensive of these is the Pegasus themed Pegase au Bloc, valued at $7,800.

The same technique was used for horse halter rosettes, which are roundels placed at halter joints for decorative accent. Typically set in utilitarian metal, these can be found repurposed into jewelry for $300-$800. Gucci’s ubiquitous bridle bit themed items include loafers, belts, bags, scarves and jewelry. Aldo Gucci, son of the founder, introduced horse bit loafers in 1953, with bits appearing on handbags since 1955. The most expensive of these sell now for $2,600 and $30,000 respectively. Though Gucci jewelry designs started later, this iconic look is synonymous with status and wealth. Though seen most often in racing fashion, equestrian wearables remain a classic all year round.

Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market: What’s old is new again By Alexandra Duemer | Community Council
Farmhouse chic and vintage treasures
have made a comeback in recent years. Coley Arnold and Lindsey Holt, the ladies behind Junk in the Trunk, first met at a church fellowship group in 2011. Bonding over the new journey of motherhood, they quickly realized that they also shared a love of vintage treasures. As the two founders discussed their frustration over a lack of places to shop for vintage items in the greater Phoenix area, they immediately saw a good business idea. Their first market was held in a friend’s backyard where they welcomed 23 vendors, along with their own items that they had been saving for an event. The backyard market was a big success with over 600 people showing up and, as they say, the rest is history.
The semi-annual shopping experience that is Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market returns to WestWorld this month, April 22-24. With a reputation for featuring quality vendors selling one-of-a-kind items and inspiring design, Junk in the Trunk continues to be a popular attraction for vintage enthusiasts across the Southwest. Attendees can shop all things vintage, local and handmade in a space of over 120,000 square feet filled with 130+ vintage curators and artisans from across the country. The unique shopping experience also hosts live music, delicious food and more. Holt says, “The Market brings together the Southwest's most creative and unique small businesses. Shoppers have the opportunity to find one-of-a-kind items while also supporting these business owners—all in one place!”

Ranch News | April 2022
Through this creative outlet, Holt and Arnold have been proud to support more than 2,500 small businesses. Reaching the local community has always been at the heart of the event. The Market has long partnered with local Young Life chapters to send high school and junior high kids to camp, as well as other non-profits to bring forth the greater good. Tickets are available for advance purchase online (at a discounted rate) or at the gate. Visit junkinthetrunkvintagemarket.com for details.

Much has been said about the benefits of pollinators in our gardens and landscapes. Bees, butterflies and hummingbirds are just a few of the most well recognized beneficial insects and animals that help to pollinate plants and food—and that we often enjoy watching while relaxing in the garden.
Hummingbirds
Hummingbirds are the smallest birds in the world measuring a mere 2-8" and some species weighing less than an ounce. With a notoriously high wing-beat rate, this fast motion is what generates the “hum” for which the hummingbird is named. The largest hummingbird has an average wing-beat rate of 8-10 beats per second, while the smallest hummingbirds have an average wingbeat rate of 80 beats per second. Interestingly, they are the only bird able to fly backwards. Arizona is home to 16 different species of hummingbirds. Each day, a hummingbird consumes more than the equivalent of their own body weight in nectar. This high sugar intake results in a very high metabolism rate. Hummingbirds have the highest metabolism rate in the animal kingdom, with the exception of insects. To maintain this metabolic rate, the average hummingbird will visit 100 flowers each day
looking for nectar. They seek out not just any flower, but those that give them a 25% sugar content in the nectar. Hummingbirds tend to pollinate red, bright pink and orange tubular shaped flowers. With an attractive and welcoming habitat you will be able to view these incredible small birds year round.
Butterflies
Arizona boasts over 250 species of butterflies; Swallowtails, Whites, Sulfurs, Blues, Hairstreaks and Metalmarks, Brushfoots, Skippers and Snouts are the most common. Planting somewhere that isn't a high traffic area, but that can still be easily observed is an ideal location for a butterfly garden. Butterflies enjoy mass plantings of wide shallow flowers that they can easily perch on. To create a true butterfly garden one must understand the four phases of a butterfly’s metamorphis: egg, caterpillar, chrysalis and then butterfly! Plant your garden of flowers to attract the butterfly at all stages.
Larvae plants include Fern Acacia, Pipevine, Kidneywood and Desert Senna. Butterflies love classic annual flowers such as zinnia, cosmos and marigold. All Star resident pedals it forward Riding has since turned into a family affair. Younger sister Carina (age 7) participated in the 30-mile virtual Tour de Scottsdale challenge in 2020 and will compete alongside Ariana in the 45-mile Tour de Mesa on April 2. “Ariana’s interest in biking began with the Tour de Scottsdale in 2018. We are grateful to the DC Ranch team for organizing that event and for being a part of her journey,” says mother Nan.

Dinu was awarded the Scottsdale All Stars Award on Saturday, Feb. 5. The award was presented by Mayor David Ortega during the annual Scottsdale Parada Del Sol. The All Stars Awards program highlights Scottsdale community members and organizations that, in 2021, received an award or honor or participated in an exceptional, documented achievement.
Ariana has also recently taken up running and swimming with the goal to compete in an Ironman triathlon. Catch her doing laps at the Desert Camp Community Center pool—where her quick math skills confirm that 140 lengths equal two miles. She also shares important tips for young bikers who are starting out: Use lower gears to go uphill and switch to higher gears going downhill. Just keep trying!
In November of last year, Dinu was awarded the Conquistador trophy as the youngest female participant to successfully complete the 102-mile El Tour de Tucson. An impressive feat by any standard! Her 8 hour and 56-minute ride was fueled by mom’s homemade brownies, lots of water and encouragement from dad, her cycling partner. “My dad has taught me safety skills like how to change a flat tire, and the importance of cadence and focus during a ride,” says Dinu. “When I did the 100 miles, I thought I could inspire other kids to achieve their goals, as long as they try hard and never give up.” The fifth grader, who has lived in DC Ranch all her life, started riding a bike at age 4 and has never really stopped. When she saw some bikers practicing for a tour in her neighborhood, she knew she wanted to do the same thing. She rides her bike to school each day and saddles up with dad for longer treks in North Scottsdale or down to Tempe on the weekend. “I enjoy riding with her and have become a serious biker because of her. We are so proud of Ariana’s perseverance,” says father Valentin.

The wonderful world of water By Dr. Jaime Parker | C.P.T. Fitness Instructor at the DC Ranch Village Health Club & Spa
Looking for a way to cool down as the temperature heats up? Want to explore a new workout option? The DC Ranch Village Health Club & Spa is the perfect place to start with the aquatic programs and classes offered in the pool.
Water is truly transformative and there are so many benefits to the mind and body for people of all ages and skill level. To start, water fitness is a low impact sport. The water gives buoyancy, which allows you to flow through a workout without high impact on the joints. This is especially good for anyone who is healing from an injury, surgery or suffers from arthritis. In fact, these individuals will usually be cleared to participate in aquatic therapy before being released to do other exercises. In addition, swimming counts as a full body workout. The variety of movements in the water helps to strength the weaker and unworked muscles and can bring more balance
Water is truly transformative and there are so many benefits to the mind and body for people of all ages and skill level. to the body. It also expands your lung capacity and therefore increases your endurance. If you are swimming outdoors, you get the added benefit of Vitamin D, which helps our bodies absorb calcium needed to strengthen
bones. Just make sure to apply sunscreen after 15 minutes of sun. The final cherry on top is that swimming is a blast! Time tends to fly by during workouts that you enjoy, plus the company and energy of others in a group class or swim team creates a motivating experience.
The Village offers Aqua Fitness Boot Camp at a variety of days and times. Other swim programs include the Masters Swim Program, taught by a coach where the workout is
intense, but so is the fun. There is also an Introduction to Masters Swim. This is a six-week program that eases the anxiety of new swimmers while also teaching them swim etiquette and skills. Group and Individual Swim Lessons for adults and kids are also offered. For kids, new swimmers are taught water safety skills and behaviors. If they are looking for some friendly competition and team experience, they can try out for the Swim Neptune program. For more information visit villageclubs.com.

Innovative theatre comes to Scottsdale Arts for things that are truly special,” said Meribeth Reeves, managing director for Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. “There is such a great, vibrant and active theater community in the Valley, and we are not looking to provide something that can already be found here but to support the community and bring in artists from around the world who can inspire, share their world views with us and explore theater in new and innovative ways.”

From recontextualizing a classic opera through a contemporary theme to a play set in a massive dress to the mystery of India’s vanishing vultures seasoned with a dash of Bollywood disco, an eclectic mix of theatrical offerings can be found at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts this spring.
“When we look for theater events to bring to the center, we are looking
Running for eight performances April 6-10, The Other Mozart is an award-winning play about the true, forgotten story of Nannerl Mozart, sister of Amadeus and a prodigy, keyboard virtuoso and composer who performed with her brother to equal acclaim, but whose work and story was lost to history. Created, written and performed by Sylvia Milo, “The Other Mozart” had a critically acclaimed Off-Broadway run and is set in a stunning 18-foot dress. Period-style movement will create a world of opulence and elegance that transports audiences to a world of outsized beauty and delight.
prize-winning “Denial of Death” and the vibrant, life–filled chaos of India’s most cosmopolitan city, Mumbai. Jacob Rajan will deliver a dazzling solo performance on April 7 as he channels seven characters, weaving the afterlife and a dash of Bollywood disco into the real-life mystery of India’s vanishing vultures.
Younger theatergoers will enjoy Balloonacy, running for four performances April 29 through May 1. It is a tender, uplifting, laugh-out-loud comedy that explores the power of friendship and shows how, with a little imagination and acceptance, companionship is everywhere.
Indian Ink Theatre Company, coming to the Valley from New Zealand, has a reputation for offering “humanity and psychological insight in a package of good plain laughs, luminous performances and brilliant staging,” according to New Zealand’s Dominion Post. The company’s Paradise or the Impermanence of Ice Cream is inspired by Ernest Becker’s Pulitzer
Each of these theater presentations shares a unique world view or perspective. And several of the artists will provide masterclasses and workshops to share their craft with other theater professionals and students.
