Trailblazers What is a trailblazer? A person who blazes a trail for others to follow through unsettled country or wilderness; a pathfinder. This month’s feature highlights businesses that have innovated and put forth
something new—a new recipe, a unique twist on an
old favorite, or one-of-a-kind experiences. Some have been around the Valley for a while, but they continue Jenna Kohl Community Council Executive Director
to delight, such as Taliesin West or McCormick Stillman Railroad Park. As we emerge out of our pandemic
cocoons, we may all be itching to be our own trailblazers —to explore a bit, to try something different. Share
your stories of exploration on social media with the hashtag #dcranch.

Creating a playbook for the future By Darren Shaw | Executive Director
On Aug. 20, the Ranch Association Board of Directors will meet for a day-long planning session to set goals and objectives Darren Shaw for the ensuing year. The general areas of discussion and consideration will center on the following areas of responsibility: Fiscally responsible management of all resources, service standards, short and long-term planning and maintaining and enhancing the physical and organizational infrastructure. From this session, Directors will develop a meaningful playbook to guide the next 12 to 18 months. From last year’s August planning session, the Ranch Association put the following objectives into play:
• Digitally storing all parcel and lot files (underway) • Complete CC&R review and amendment process (underway)
City of Scottsdale to hear tree removal plan The Arcadia Sissoo tree removal and replacement initiative is expected to be heard by the City of Scottsdale later this month. On the slate is the removal of 670 street trees that will be replaced with Evergreen Elm trees. Sissoo tree root systems are invasive by nature and are no longer permitted to be planted in DC Ranch.
• Establishing a street tree maintenance program for Desert Parks (one of the five neighborhoods will start this year) • Develop solar installation policy for single family homes • Locate and identify suitable land for the Association’s maintenance facility (underway) • Improve NVM training program (complete) • Consider implementing Firewise program (underway) • Competitively bid security services contract (underway) • Review and revise Community Standards for Landscape (underway) • Develop three-year plan • Update risk management plan • Prepare for additional sub-association management opportunities (underway).
As the Board prepares for this year’s planning session, residents can email Residentinput@dcranchinc.com to submit ideas for consideration.
Security contract up for renewal
Anderson Security Agency (ASA) partners with DC Ranch to provide security services. At $1.8 million, this annual contract is the most significant one the Ranch Association maintains. ASA provides a variety of services, such as access control, neighborhood patrol, EMR and snake removal, all of which are part of its 1,476 weekly hours. ASA will complete its third year of a three-year contract this December. The Ranch Association team is completing a competitive bid process as part of its due diligence. That information will be shared with the Board at its a special meeting on Aug. 24 where the final two candidates will present.
Firewise initiative considered for DC Ranch Firewise is a national program designed to reduce fire fuels. Arizona faces a severe drought and the potential for natural area fire is higher than ever before. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) writes, “The Firewise Research around home destruction vs. home survival in wildfires point to embers and small flames as the main way that most homes ignite in wildfires. Embers are burning pieces of airborne wood or vegetation that can be carried more than a mile through the wind to cause spot fires and ignite homes, debris and other objects. There are methods for homeowners to prepare their homes to withstand ember attacks and minimize the likelihood of flames or surface fire touching the home or any attachments. Experiments, models, and post-fire studies have shown homes ignite due to the condition
The halfway point of 2021 has come and gone, and the summer season has been hot, as expected. While many owners leave DC Ranch for the season, there are many that tough it out. Generally, the summer months are when we focus on many reserve projects. This summer, select flat roofs were replaced at Market Street Villas, and the front entry cobble renovated. A major storm water system channel was repaired in the upper canyon, water features were renovated at Ethel’s Garden and tunnel cameras were added in four new locations. The Arcadia gatehouse was outfit-
of the home and everything around it, up to 200 feet from the foundation. That is called the Home Ignition Zone (HIZ).”
The Ranch Association Board is contemplating the Firewise Program for DC Ranch and evaluating the pro and cons. The matter was discussed formally at the June 7 board meeting, which was followed by a special NVM/ Board meeting June 23. About $400,000 has been set aside for the program, and the Ranch Association has submitted a grant request to the State of Arizona. At its Aug. 2 meeting, the Board will again discuss Firewise and perhaps decide the program’s fate at DC Ranch. ted with additional video monitor screens, a new rear paver storage deck and fresh paint. The remaining summer slate is full, with the following projects planned: Road work at Park and Manor, Montelena, Rosewood, Tapadero, The Parks (Windgate), Camelot and Sterling. Keep an eye open for more details regarding road closings. Boundary walls will be repaired and painted at Horseshoe and Arcadia, and the Westgate gatehouse will undergo an interior renovation. Outside furniture in many park areas will be replaced, and some playground areas will be renovated.
Reserve projects happening across DC Ranch
In-person meetings to return Since March of 2020, all Ranch Association meetings have been held via Zoom. As we move
through the summer months, the Board will reintroduce in-person meetings. While the virtual meetings provided efficiencies in many ways, this business is deeply rooted in the personal touch, where owners feel more engaged and connected when meeting in person. Look for updates on the next in-person meeting.

RESIDENT INPUT WANTED FOR CITY PARK PLANNING
The City of Scottsdale plans to hold virtual meetings for residents to provide input on additional amenities they would like to see provided at DC Ranch Neighborhood Park. Once this is done, the City can determine the cost to complete the park. While the City does not currently have funding to complete the park, the DC Ranch Community Council is advocating for funds to be included in the City’s future Capital Improvement Budget. The park is located on 91st Street and Trailside View. Current construction includes an approximately 2-acre lake accompanied by a pump house, picnic ramada, benches, a public art sculpture and landscaping to include grass areas, more than 60 trees, pathways, and lighting. The lake is slated to open to the public in December or January.

OVER $100 MILLION SOLD IN 2020 By Dr. Alex Casuccio | Scottsdale Animal Healthcare
There is a big toad that lives in Arizona. The Sonoran Desert Toad (a.k.a., the Colorado River Toad). It burrows into the soil to hide during the dry season and comes out during monsoon season. It is the largest native toad, growing 7-9 inches. The problem with this toad is not that it might cause warts. It's much worse than that. It is so toxic that a pet can be fatally poisoned by just playing with one!

LUXURY DEFINED
Toad poisoning is very common in Arizona pets. This is because all toads have skin that secretes toxins. These toxins lie on the toad's skin and act as protection against predators. The Sonoran Desert Toad is a heavyweight with three neurotoxins, which are extraordinarily potent and dangerous. If a pet grabs or licks this toad, the toxins are absorbed very rapidly through the pet's mouth. The first signs are excessive drooling. Next, the pet's lips will look like they have shaving cream on them, and they will be dripping froth like Cujo. From there, labored breathing, diarrhea and vomiting may occur. Lastly, seizures, total collapse and even death may follow. All of this is dose-dependent, of course.
These toads are known to sit on the rim of a pet's water or food bowl. (Do you keep water bowls outside?) Toxins are left on the bowl, and when your pet next eats or drinks— WHAM! If you see your pet messing with a toad or exhibiting symptoms, immediately wash its mouth out with running water. Rub its gums and tongue with your fingers while flushing its mouth with a hose— until all slimy mucus is gone— flush from side to side, not front to back. For cats, be sure to wash their paws thoroughly before they have a chance to groom themselves. If further signs develop, get your pet to a veterinarian immediately. Things tend to progress rapidly, so emergency care is critical.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO AVOID TOAD POISONING? • Toads are out at night, so don't allow pets out at night without supervision.
• Whenever it's raining, accompany your pet outside and watch for toads.
Toxic toads pose danger to pets
• During early morning hours, toads hide under bushes and plants. Keep pets away during the rainy season.
• Keep pets out of backyard washes during monsoon season.

Meet your board members COMMUNITY COUNCIL
RANCH ASSOCIATION
Bud Kern, President
Geoffrey Wilner, President
I have had the pleasure of serving on the Community Council Board of Directors for five years, with one year left to serve. It has been enlightening to learn how our community functions behind the scenes. There is a lot more going on than one would think. The three organizations (Community Council, Ranch Association and Covenant Commission) that manage our community are tasked with a lot of duties to make things happen seamlessly.
I have been a DC Ranch resident for five years, serving as an NVM (Neighborhood Voting Member) for two years and a Board Member since 2019. Born in the Southwest, I love the geography of this region. My professional background is in retail management where my experience with customer service and teamwork prepared me to be impactful in HOA’s for 30 years.
We purchased our home in DC Ranch in 2005, and I began serving on Association committees in 2013. After complaining to Drew Brown of DMB about a minor issue, he wisely advised me that I should join a board if I wanted to be involved in community issues. It has been a valuable experience.
I would applaud anyone who is motivated to be on the Board. The only prerequisites are your time and love for the community. Additional opportunities for community involvement include the Leadership Academy, board committees, NVM, or simply being an informed resident. I encourage resident participation at any level to leave their own “footprint” behind.
I was raised on a small farm in rural Nebraska (18 students in my graduating class) and moved to Colorado for my college education. Staying in Denver, I spent my career in the financial operations and software services industry until retirement.
Natalie Ingram, Vice President
I have served on the Community Council for over three years and have volunteered to serve another three-year term. Last year I was in the position of treasurer/secretary, and this past year I have been serving as the vice president. It has been a very interesting experience to see all that goes into servicing residents in the best way possible and witnessing first-hand how genuinely passionate Jenna and her team are about taking thoughtful care of our thousands of residents. I spent my youth in rural Upstate New York but ultimately ended up in Connecticut, working for a boutique executive search firm, specializing in technology. My husband and I lived in NYC for almost a decade, and our two kids were born there. I stayed with that search firm for almost twenty years, traveling nationwide, working with all shapes and sizes of businesses.

We found a home in DC Ranch seven years ago and still ask ourselves what took us so long! I have since started my own executive search firm and tell my two teenage kids to seek out something they love and are passionate about, as I'm so fortunate to do so. It wasn't a hard decision to get involved in the Community Council. Anyone who has a passion for this community and keeping it exceptional should please explore how to get involved! There are many big and small ways to get started. It has been a rewarding, fascinating experience.

I enjoy the interactions I have with the residents I serve and working with the management team and staff to make DC Ranch a premier place to live. I actively listen to resident and NVM perspectives on their unique neighborhoods. Integrating those perspectives with the decision-making process makes being a Board member extremely fulfilling.
Elaine Cottey, Secretary
I want to continue to contribute to DC Ranch’s ongoing success as the premier community in the greater Phoenix/Scottsdale area. My goals remain to maintain and enhance property values, to demonstrate fiscal responsibility and to determine future improvements for DC Ranch.
I lived in the Chicago area until my husband Paul and I moved here, and I was involved in a variety of philanthropic efforts there for many years. Prior to embarking on my volunteer career, my professional background was in sales, marketing and communications, most notably with Accenture.
Serving on volunteer committees in DC Ranch has been a great way for me to meet people while serving our community. The Board needs people with diverse backgrounds and experiences, and there are lots of ways to volunteer. DC Ranch has a very strong Leadership Development Academy, so consider applying to the next Leadership class to learn about DC Ranch in depth. Become a Neighborhood Voting Member (NVM) and/or join a committee. All of these options are great ways to "test the waters” before running for a BOD position. Or, just go for it! There is a lot of support for new Board members.

H E A LT H Y L I V I N G By Jamie Miller | The Village Health Club & Spa
Many individuals are willing to pay a high price tag for the latest serums, creams, and cosmetics all in hopes to improve our appearance. But did you know that what you eat also can transform what you see in the mirror? Proper nutrition supports the health of your hair, skin and nails to make you glow from the inside out.
HEALTHY FATS FOR RADIANT SKIN
Oftentimes, individuals try to cut out as much fat as possible from their diet in hopes to keep any unwanted pounds off. But this can be one of the biggest mistakes made for our most radiant skin. Too little fat in our diet can cause skin to be more wrinkled and dry. Enough healthy fats provide skin with a natural “glow” and help keep skin moist, firm and flexible. Focus on heart-healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats from sources
like nuts, seeds, avocados and fatty fish (such as salmon, sardines and trout). Omega-3 fatty acids also block a chemical that lets skin cancer grow and spread, while also lowering inflammation to decrease redness or acne.
VITAMIN C TO LOWER SKIN CANCER RISK
This vitamin helps collagen protein hold its shape to make strong hair, skin and nails. It’s also a powerful antioxidant to protect skin from free radicals and possibly lower the chance of skin cancer. Some of the foods highest in vitamin C include bell pepper, kiwi, strawberries, citrus, papaya, broccoli, tomato and leafy greens.
VITAMIN A FOR HEALTHY HAIR
Both the upper and lower layers of skin need vitamin A to prevent sun damage by interrupting the process that breaks down collagen.
Beauty boosting nutritional Insights
Vitamin A also helps the oil glands around hair follicles work to keep hair nourished. Our skin also benefits from adequate vitamin A in the way it helps our skin heal from any scrapes or other injuries. Foods rich in vitamin A include carrots, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, leafy greens, red pepper, grapefruit, egg yolks, tuna and dairy.
ZINC TO PROTECT FROM SUN DAMAGE
Zinc can be very helpful for individuals who experience bacterial acne because this mineral has antimicrobial effects. It also keeps skin vibrant by protecting against sun damage. Zinc deficiency can cause hair loss, so proper intake is needed to keep hair full and thick. Foods highest in zinc include oysters,
meat and poultry, tofu, beans and lentils, oats, nuts and seeds, mushrooms and cocoa powder.
PROTEIN FOR STRONG HAIR AND NAILS
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein which the body uses to make other proteins, including collagen and keratin which form the structure of skin, hair and nails. Aim to consume 0.8-1 gram of protein per pound of body weight to ensure you have the amino acids from food for strong hair and nails and smooth skin. Nutritious protein sources include lean meats and poultry, fish and shellfish, eggs, yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, edamame, tempeh, tofu, protein powder, collagen and bone broth.

Young Phoenix Artists at Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art
Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) presents works by emerging Phoenixbased artists in a group show titled “Forever Becoming: Young Phoenix Artists,” on view Sept. 11, 2021– Jan. 23, 2022. “Providing a platform for young local artists who are responding to the evolving times became an important goal for SMoCA and we are grateful to have such a talented pool of artists in the Valley,” said Jennifer McCabe, SMoCA director and chief curator.
Curator of the exhibition, Lauren O’Connell reflects, “upon moving back to Arizona in 2017 and getting reacquainted with the art community, I started to meet more and more artists who were graduating from ASU. I wanted to highlight this group of artists that were mostly under 30 years old and making incredibly powerful work. The artists selected show a high level of criticality and professionalism, and once asked to participate, all jumped at the chance to make new work for the exhibition. It has been a privilege to work with these brilliant emerging artists who have promising futures ahead of them.”
The new works created for “Forever Becoming” speak to the resilience and determination of a new generation of artists who expose the complexities of becoming within the rapidly evolving ethos of today. These artworks address a variety of topics, including marginalized communities, social justice, environmental degradation, exploration of sexuality and reckoning with personal
narratives. Several of the works focus on healing the mind and body from past traumas and remediation of environmental degradation from human intervention.
“In my new body of work, I use braided hair and pony beads as a symbol of identity and vulnerability. The acts of both hair braiding and beading are laborious, meditative and repetitive; a process that serves to be transformative in nature. I view this new work as a reinterpretation of the historical significance of African hair braiding (Clockwise from and beading, and to top left) Vincent Chung: serve as a metaphor for Bitter wind to hold my shaky hands; the passage of time, the Lena Klett: Untitled Shrine (for dirt clod); Papay Solomon: Heavy (Weight) phases of grief, and an Benjamin Gasinga Gaspard â Rwanda; extension of my body. Cydnei Mallory: Six Evolve I This exhibition has provided me a platform to start a conversation surrounding identity, vulnerability and visibility; and I am grateful to be given such a space to do so,” said Merryn Alaka, artist. This group of artists intersect in several ways: each artist graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Science or Master of Fine Arts from Arizona State University between 2016 and 2019; additionally, several of the artists collaborate with each other on artwork. Despite these crosscurrents, the group of artists have distinctive styles representing a wide scope of contemporary art, including figurative painting, abstract drawing, sculpture, video and installation, to name a few.
