Last year, December holiday celebrations may have been quieter and smaller than usual. Amidst the more solitary holiday season, the Merry & Bright Trail of Lights was an unexpected and cherished addition to the DC Ranch lineup of winter activities that delighted many residents in 2020. The talented and creative Events team converted the lawns at the Desert Camp Community Center into a spectacular light display, bringing joy to all who visited. That lights are back this year with additional special events planned! Learn more about the activities on DCRanch.com. Did you know that the ultimate responsibility of the Community Council is to be a catalyst for the creation of a sense of community and activities at DC Ranch? That is a core component of the governing documents that established the Council. Our signature events—

Gate transponder operations to permanently stay at the East Gate In November the Ranch Association relocated transponder pick up from the West Gate to the East Gate (9820 E. Thompson Peak Pkwy.) to allow for repair of the West Gate roof. Due to the length of that project, the Association opted to keep gate transponder operations at the East Gate for several additional reasons: 1) to reduce traffic congestion at The West Gate caused by a larger resident population and club membership ingress and 2) East Gate, by design,
allows for more vehicle capacity in the guest lane. Upon examination of gate activity since relocating, DC Ranch Security reports a better balance between the two gate locations regarding wait times and workloads. Transponder hours of operation remain the same: Monday – Friday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. or by appointment on weekends. Call 480.473.7506 or email eastgate@dcranchinc.com.
Water conservation adds up during the winter months
Now that cooler temperatures are here, residents can save money on water bills. Water management experts recommend turning off irrigation systems between Dec. 1 and March 1 to established native plants and trees. The goal is to reduce irrigation while maintaining an aesthetically vibrant landscape conducive to plant health. The Ranch Association follows this practice for most common area plants and trees. For additional help with home water management, visit wateruseitwisely.com or scottsdaleaz.gov/water.
Is it time to paint? Winter is an ideal time to paint your home, but what are the signs that it needs a fresh coat? The Community Standards team regularly inspects for discoloration, deterioration, peeling and fading. Under most conditions in the hot southwest, homes should be painted every seven years. The first step is to check with the Modifications Department to confirm your pre-approved home color scheme, and although not required, it is recommended to submit a Paint Modification Form. If you plan to use a new or different paint color, a Paint Modification Form must be submitted and approved by the Association’s Modifications Committee. Contact paint specialist Vince Muldrow at 480.419.5305.

Short-term rentals may seem tempting as Scottsdale’s high tourism season approaches, but the minimum $1,000 fine for doing so is hefty. The community’s governing documents require a minimum six-month rental period, and a property may only be rented twice in any continuous 12-month period. The Community Standards team keeps a close eye on vacation rental websites, especially during the tourist season. Courtesy notices are sent first to those who advertise short-term rentals, knowing that many times, owners may not be aware of the guidelines. If the Community Standards team reaches out a second time, the fine applies.
Leases require six months minimum
Renting a home requires submitting the Tenant Registration Form to ensure proper entry to the community database for notifications, event registrations and emergency messaging. This process creates a separate security account for the tenant allowing for gate and community center access. There are so many wonderful reasons to live at DC Ranch; it’s important that all residents have the opportunity to enjoy everything the community has to offer. By Taylor Haynes | Arizona Oddities
A collection of angular, concrete structures cling to the edge of a ravine in Yavapai County, Arizona. Circular windows look out over the arid shrubland, shaded by tall Italian cypress. Bronze bells hanging from awnings sway in a light breeze, their music echoes in the desert air. Arcosanti is easily one of the most striking and revolutionary architectural destinations in Arizona.
Dreaming of the future at Arcosanti
Italian-American architect Paolo Soleri conceived of Arcosanti in the early 1970s, envisioning a futuristic and self-sufficient town at the Prescott and Tonto National Forests border. A combination of “ecology” and “architecture,” arcology was the guiding principle behind Soleri’s designs. Arcology blurs the line between manmade and natural; Soleri believed urban centers could exist asymptotically with their surrounding environment. “The problem I am confronting is the present design of cities only a few stories high, stretching outward in unwieldy sprawl for miles,” said Soleri in 1977. “As a result, they literally transform the earth, turn farms into parking lots, wasting enormous amounts of time and energy transporting people, goods and services over their expanses.”
Arcosanti became Soleri’s personal experiment in arcology. It was meant to offer everything needed for a functioning community—housing, an office complex, greenhouse, agricultural fields, an amphitheater, a cafeteria, passive heating and cooling—with as little impact as possible to the surrounding environment.
Arcology fits comfortably within the environmental movement of the 1960s and 70s. Motivated by the Green Movement, Soleri had grand plans for Arcosanti, imagining a complex urban center called Arcosanti 5000, housing thousands of people.

As the discussion around climate change reaches a fever pitch, there has been a renewed interest in Arcosanti and Soleri’s philosophy. Soleri passed in 2013 before he could see his ambitious Arcosanti 5000 come to fruition; the current structures are only a small fraction of the immense cityscape it was meant to be. Even so, Arcosanti serves as a rich educational center and one-of-a-kind tourist destination. Its event calendar features art exhibits and concerts. The much-hyped FORM Festival kicked off in 2014 and has only grown in popularity since—attracting thousands of concert goers from across the globe.
Today, Arcosanti's progressive ideals and avantgarde design seem incompatible with the signs of civilization nearby: the golden arches of McDonald’s and gas stations. Drivers speed by without a second glance at the lackluster view. But Soleri found endless potential in this seemingly uninspiring corner of high desert. Arcosanti melts into its surroundings, elevating the landscape's browns, sage and rusts—as arcology decrees, the cluster of structures seem like they could have sprung from the earth themselves. Arcosanti is open to the public seven days a week. To learn more, visit arcosanti.org.

Desert Camp
Desert Camp site refresh in the works The next step in the Master Plan project is underway after the Community Council board authorized the release of a request for qualifications (RFQ) for an architect and contractor team to design and build improvements to the Desert Camp Community Center.
The Desert Camp site improvements scope includes a new fitness center, group fitness room, interior renovations, required parking, pickleball courts, tennis courts, loop trail and ancillary items. After RFQ submittals are reviewed and firms interviewed, the Board plans to select a project team to start this important community enhancement project. RESULTS Taking steps to protect a treasured amenity By Mike Fenzel | Community Council
DC Ranch is steward to over fifty miles of landscaped paths and trails that wind their way through distinct neighborhoods, integrating into one connected community and ultimately leading to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.
It is an ongoing Ranchwide initiative to preserve and maintain the path and trails system’s safety, attractiveness and accessibility.
Completed projects
In August and September, five concrete pads were replaced throughout the path and trail system, including the underpass near Market Street Park.
Six additional crosswalks were added in several neighborhoods. The most recent crosswalk was completed in the Country Club neighborhood this summer.
Upcoming projects
The Community Council Board of Directors recently approved two significant trail safety improvements.
First, in the spirit of stewardship of our path and trail system, improvements will be made to the Windgate Pass Trail including widening of the trail where possible and cutting back vegetation to mitigate
obstruction of the trail. Drainage and erosion improvement measures will also be implemented. Once the project is complete, it is anticipated that residents will be encouraged to utilize the developed trail rather than the busy main street.
Second, improvements will be made to the north and south side of the lake located at Country Club. Regrading and installation of stabilized surface on identified portions of the trail will be undertaken. Sections of safety railing will be installed on the south side of the lake. These projects were identified and prioritized as part of a path and trail audit in 2019. Several Neighborhood Voting Members also recommended these projects.
Looking toward the future The DC Ranch 2020 Strategic Plan recognizes the need for a safe and well-planned infrastructure maintained at a high level.
The Community Council will continue to improve the overall path and trail system by conducting a path and trail audit with landscape architect Jack Gilcrest. He has worked with DC Ranch since 2016. This unique path and trail system continues to move forward as a “best in class” experience for the DC Ranch community.

Spotlight on the Firewise Committee In today’s climate, wildfire is a safety issue for DC Ranch and work must be done to provide defensible space in natural common areas. The areas of greatest concern are adjacent to neighborhoods in the Desert Parks, Desert Camp and Country Club Villages and various neighborhoods in Silverleaf. By Terri Raimondi | Ranch Association
Firewise creates defensible space extending five feet from an owner’s wall or view fence in which vegetation is minimized and tree limbs are lifted to allow firefighters access when needed. The next 15 feet is then cleared to remove dead and dying landscape and ladder fuels. Airborne embers and small flames are the main way that wildfires can spread to nearby homes. Funding for the Firewise project was approved by the Ranch Association Board with the 2021 Operating Budget and Reserve Plan. A total of $167,000 is appropriated to begin Firewise this year in common area surrounding Arcadia at Silverleaf, lower parts of Horseshoe Canyon, and the Camelot/Standard Pacific homes behind the 93rd, 94th and 96th Way gates. Additional work planned for 2022 and 2023 is also funded.
At its Oct. 4 meeting, the Ranch Association’s board approved appointment of three resident members to the new Firewise Committee who will serve along with two board members and two staff members. Board Directors Greg Kiraly and Phil Geiger will serve as chairs of the committee.Residents Andrea Brin and Kris James of the Desert Camp Village and Paul Staker of Silverleaf will assist in getting Firewise off to a good start with cooperation from the Scottsdale Fire Department.
Andrea Brin
“I have always been a proponent of fire prevention and an advocate of home measures for ultimate safety, whether it be yearly replacement of batteries on smoke detectors, checking extinguishers or points of safe entry. Firewise gives us a chance to make the community’s open spaces less vulnerable to wildfires. It helps us provide a clear path of access to our homes for emergency vehicles and permits us to clear debris that has accumulated from our natural lands. I have no experience with fire prevention, but I participate in many committees and feel that I could carry out tasks in an efficient manner. I am an active member of the DC Ranch community and completed the Resident Leadership Academy. I have a public information background and look forward to assisting with this important project.”

Kris James “I am a 15-year resident of DC Ranch and enjoy being active in the community. I have served on multiple committees in the past, including serving on the board of directors from 2008-2010. I am extremely knowledgeable about natural area open space in the Sonoran Desert including all the diverse vegetation from bursage, creosote, palo verde, mesquite and ironwood trees. I also have a hobby of hiking to wildland fire locations including the Dude Fire in Payson, the Yarnell Hill Fire, the Bush Fire in the Four Peaks area and Storm King Mountain to understand and appreciate the risks of wildland fires.“
Paul Staker
“I believe that our community is threatened by the potential for significant fire events that would be catastrophic for many homes. I also value the tremendous resource that we have in the adjoining McDowell Sonoran Preserve and view the relationship between DC Ranch and the Preserve as the single most important wildland—urban interface in the area. While I understand the concerns expressed about the potential negative impact of Firewise on DC Ranch aesthetic, I believe that those concerns can be appropriately addressed as we implement this program in coordination with the Scottsdale Fire Department to reduce fire risk. I have been a steward with the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy (MSC) for over 11 years and have served as the program chair for MSC's Construction & Maintenance and Citizen Science programs. For over five years, I have been the lead for MSC's non-native plants project. I am very familiar with the issues associated with invasive plants including their ability to cause more frequent and intense wildfires. I am an Arizona state certified herbicide applicator and have been involved in many Preserve projects to remove non-native plants through both physical removal and chemical treatment and have led MSC's experimental studies to determine optimal protocols for treating non-natives.”
