“I think art is a healing force, and if we give in to the joy that can be found in art, then we are able to sustain ourselves in spite of ourselves.” —Ntozake Shange

January often offers a fresh start—a commitment to being the best version of ourselves. We are coming off a challenging year, and many are seeking healing. Art can have meaning for all of us, no matter our age or stage in life. It can be enjoyed alone, in solitude, or with a group of close friends; at an art museum, walking through a sculpture garden, or even online. Learn more about Thunderbird Artists Wine & Art Festival in our feature on pages 10-11. Art abounds in Scottsdale, and you don’t have to wait to immerse yourself in the benefits of the arts. Start by visiting scottsdalearts.org. In DC Ranch, we start 2021 financially strong. We still face the impacts of the pandemic, but with optimism that a vaccine brings promise for us all. DC Ranch Day, typically held in January, will be postponed until we can all celebrate together in style. In the meantime, we will continue to host programs and provide services that meet safety protocols and allow us to engage with each other. We also continue to track topics and projects that impact our community, such as the City of Scottsdale bond projects and the Reata Wash; you can find a wealth of up to date information at dcranch.com/ newsworthy. Cheers to a happy and healthy New Year!

Of course, Archie (our Chinese Crested puppy) gets walked around the neighborhood before we make coffee. We can’t let the Prince have an accident; it would be undignified.

We then head over to Silverleaf Club and join friends for a round of golf. Depending on the day of the week and time of year, we will play couples or guys and gals. We play all summer, and this year, for the first time, many of our snowbird friends stayed a month or two longer than usual.

When the round is over, we enjoy sitting on the club’s patio to watch our friends come in. The 18th hole is challenging with a wash about 20 yards before the green. We often make wagers: Will they hit the

After we finish up at the club, we typically have a few couples get together for dinner. Local restaurants like Jalapeño Inferno and Liberty Station are favorites. There is something pleasant and lively about walking on Market Street, watching our neighbors and friends enjoy themselves.

Sometimes we gather at someone’s home and enjoy dinner. Everyone contributes, which might mean trips

to the nearby AJ’s or Safeway to pick up last-minute items.

As we await dinner, everyone enjoys a beverage together and the beautiful sunset with a backdrop of the McDowell Mountains. A patio full of friends is a perfect day in our lives.

Calling all residents!

Let your imagination run wild and share your version of a perfect day in Scottsdale! In 400 words or less, tell us about the places you would visit, the things you would do and the people you would see if you could do anything for a day in our beautiful city. Please include a photo with your entry and email to communications@dcranchinc.com.

Resident input provided in the DC Ranch strategic planning initiative, DCR2020, included the directive to be an active and engaged voice in regional Scottsdale matters. The Community Council is designated as the entity responsible for building relationships with regional agencies and has developed a framework and process for identification and engagement coordinated by Director of Public Affairs Chris Irish. Residents went on to say that DC Ranch should position itself as an important player in the planning and direction of key projects and initiatives that may fall outside of DC Ranch’s governance jurisdiction. They want DC Ranch to be recognized as a positive, productive and valuable partner with Scottsdale and other governing and community agencies.

The Community Council utilizes the following criteria to determine if a public policy matter is suitable for engagement and whether to participate in communication and advocacy activities on behalf of the DC Ranch community-at-large:

Impact Does this matter impact, either positively or negatively, the collective

interests of the DC Ranch community-at-large? How might it reflect on the

brand, mission and vision of DC Ranch? Examples of such matters include new developments near DC Ranch, environmental matters, funding for municipal infrastructure improvements, etc.

Criteria Should the Community Council decide to take a position on behalf of the DC Ranch community-at-large, the stance may reflect approval or opposition to specific criteria verses a “for or against” position. Such criteria may include traffic impact, view shed, noise, light pollution, safety, etc.

The Community Council currently has Engagement Plans that outline its approach to Sky Harbor NextGen flight paths, State land, SUSD Land at Copper Ridge School and City of Scottdale bond projects being built near DC Ranch to include the Bell Road Sports Complex and lake at the future DC Ranch Neighborhood Park, the Reata Wash and Scottsdale Airport.

Community Council Director Applications Open

The DC Ranch Community Council welcomes applications to serve on its Board of Directors. There are two positions open, each for three-year terms. The Council Directors whose terms expire in March are both eligible to serve another term, and both have indicated a desire to be considered for a second term. The Council Board will consider all applications submitted. For more information and an application form, visit DCRanch.com. Questions may also be emailed to jenna.kohl@dcranchinc.com.

Carefree Fine Art & Wine Festival

Thunderbird Artists, a leading producer of fine art and wine events in the Southwest, is excited to announce ceramicist Hong Rubinstein as the featured artist for the 28th Annual Winter Carefree Fine Art & Wine Festival, Jan. 15-17. The event will bring together more than 150 juried fine artists, musicians, wine connoisseurs, distilleries and more!

DENISE COLTER | THUNDERBIRD ARTISTS

ong Rubinstein was born and raised in China, where she spent hours drawing on the ground into soft earth with a tree branch, knowing full well that she wanted to be an artist when she grew up. Hong’s biggest influences were Dali, Gaudi and her husband, Adam Rubinstein. “My husband, also an artist, is a huge influence and his work ethic helped me move fully into being a working, professional artist.”

Hong draws inspiration from everything around her: nature, the ocean and coast, the desert and natural world. “I find beauty in everything! It’s like flashes of visual interest always in a constant explosion around me. I even pick up rocks and odd bits of things because they seem beautiful to me and make me happy,” states Rubinstein. If Hong could give her younger self advice, she would say, “Never give up, whatever life throws at you, you must continue to keep working, surmount technical problems, just keep pressing forward finding joy.” When Hong enters her studio and begins to work the clay, she can forget everything; time evaporates, she escapes into a different realm. “Suddenly, it’s the middle of the night, and the day has gone; worries disappear. Each finished piece is a sense of satisfaction.” In addition to Hong’s work, attendees can experience and purchase works ranging from paintings, bronzes, glass, clay, stone, metal, wood and mixed media sculptures, one-of-a-kind jewelry, limited edition photography, batiks, scratchboard and much more.

Bob Culbertson’s Chapman Stick is a showstopper for sure. The Chapman Stick looks like a wide version of an electric guitar’s fretboard, but with 8, 10, or 12 strings. The player then hammers onto the strings with their fingertips in the same way that one would strike a piano key. Guitarist, Chuck Hall, prefers to play the blues and can be heard while marveling at the Largest Sundial in Arizona. Carefree local Henry Molder loves the town and can be heard almost daily on his Native American Flute, while Indian Flutist Vibhas Kendzia plays while walking Ho Hum Drive. Thunderbird Artists is excited to welcome festival newcomer Anna May to our line-up this season. The acoustic guitar and plucky ukulele never sounded so chic as it does alongside her angelic voice.

A vast array of domestic and imported wines will be available for tasting, along with ice-cold microbrews and flavored spirits. Admission is $3, but $10 will get attendees an engraved souvenir wine glass and six wine tasting tickets. In addition to the delicious food from participating vendors, patrons have many dining options with Carefree’s surrounding restaurants and outdoor cafes. Class 1 of Resident Leadership Development Program graduates despite pandemic JONA DAVIS | COMMUNITY COUNCIL

In January of 2020, DC Ranch launched the inaugural leadership development program for residents interested in learning more about the community’s governance and operations. The program’s long-term goal is to equip participants with the knowledge to serve in future community leadership roles.

The eight sessions provided a solid foundation for those who wanted to contribute as members of a committee, focus group, outreach ambassador, Neighborhood Voting Member or serve on a Board of Directors for either the Community Council or Ranch Association. Almost half of the graduating class volunteered to serve in one of these leadership roles by the program’s conclusion.

LUXURY DEFINED 12

Ranc h Ne w s | Janu ar y 2021

Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, Class I could not gather in person for a graduation celebration. However, each graduate visited The Homestead Community Center to pick up their certificate and a special gift basket to commemorate the occasion. Program organizers Brad Bishop, Ranch Association Maintenance Services Director, and Jona Davis, Community Council Community Engagement Director, congratulated each of them. Classmate Scott Whitmire commented, “A big thank you to everyone involved in this class. It was well worth it!” At the conclusion of the program, participants were surveyed and

• Andrea Brin • Pam Church • Elaine Cottey • Kathleen Cummings • Robert Dobos • Matthew Farber • Robert Goebel • Janet Jones

• Pamela Kacir • Jane “Cass” Maller • Dia-Lisa Nutall • Terry Nutall • Lisa Olsen • Renee Selitto • John Shaw • Ann Stacy • Ron Stacy • Dave Underwood • Scott Whitmire • Steve Wrede

100% said it gave them the confidence to volunteer in some capacity at DC Ranch. They gave 4.9 out of 5 stars that the program further increased their knowledge of DC Ranch. All respondents gave the highest rating of “definitely would” when asked if they would recommend this program to other residents.

One participant stated, “Understanding all facets, disciplines, culture, mission statement and getting the inside look into the operations of DC Ranch was extremely valuable to me. Overall this was a great learning experience one that I will never forget.” Class II of the Resident Leadership Development Program is expected to be held in the fall of 2021. If interested, watch for applications to be available in the summer. Please check DCRanch.com for the most up-to-date information.

Tonja Howard Realtor & DC Ranch Resident Having recently joined Cashman Partners, a Top 1% producing team with Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty, Tonja brings energy and enthusiasm, business ownership and real estate investment expertise along with a genuine personality to the industry. “This business may be seen as buying and selling homes, but really it’s about people. Personal life transitions and real estate transactions go hand in hand. My partners and I help our clients navigate this process.” DC Ranch Country Club is home to Tonja and her family. She brings valuable connections as well as knowledge of the DC Ranch & Silverleaf markets to the team.

Scuderia Southwest’s Scottsdale Motorsports Gathering is held the first Saturday of every month, 7 to 10 a.m. January 2 marks their 20th anniversary with a special celebration on Market Street.

ALEXANDRA DUEMER | COMMUNITY COUNCIL

rom their inception in 2001 as just a few guys enjoying cars and conversation, Scuderia Southwest has grown to host not just one of the most elite “Cars and Coffee” gatherings in America, but multiple annual events celebrating the finest in automotive culture while benefitting numerous local charities. Last year, The Concours in the Hills event brought 35,000 spectators, 1,000 show cars and raised over $250,000 for Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

For 15 years, the group would meet at Gainey Village on Scottsdale Road. As the event grew in size and popularity, it needed a new location that would appeal to its demographic and needs for parking. “This is a big car enthusiast community with more cars per capita than most,” says founding member David Crofford. “Market Street is a good match for the crowd we bring.”

Jim Mastandrea, Chairman and CEO of Whitestone REIT commented, “We are pleased that Scuderia Southwest, an organization which recognizes high-end quality and performance, sees the value in hosting its monthly event at our premier location. We see this partnership as a win-win as we are always looking for new, creative and fun ways to drive foot traffic to our properties and help our local entrepreneurial tenant base succeed. The Scottsdale Motorsports Gathering was looking for a desirable venue to showcase their prized automobiles and we are honored to be the venue of choice.”

Since his election, Spargo has been instrumental in keeping his neighborhood informed on the proposed Bell Road Sports Complex and has helped organize meetings and disseminate information.

Todd Case of Country Club village stepped in as NVM on behalf of Happy Hollow residents in April last year to replace Don Matheson, who also was elected to the board. Pauline Kelley became an NVM mid-year in 2020 when she stepped up to represent Veranda Place in the Parks district of Silverleaf. Sharing this information with my neighbors is only fitting.”

RECOGNITION OF RETURNING NVMS

There are eight unique NVM voting blocks in the Country Club village, each represented by an elected volunteer. In our previous spotlights in this publication, we were able to showcase several of our Country Club NVMs; however, the Association would also like to recognize several who have served multiple terms: Frank Tranisi, Sharon Devine, Jim Sullivan, Chris Nottoli and James Dixon. Tranisi recently helped with the development of the invasive plant poster that can be seen around the community and Nottoli has been a voice for speed calming along Mule Deer Trail. Sullivan, Dixon, and Devine have also all served their neighborhoods in a variety of ways.

BY JOHN LOLEIT | CITY OF SCOTTSDALE

ast year was unforgettable and forgettable all at the same time. When COVID-19 hit in the spring of 2020 and reality quickly settled in, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve became a mecca for escaping all the stress and closures under quarantine. It was a discovery and eye-opener for many first-time users who had not taken advantage of the many trails, exquisite views and surprisingly beautiful landscape that is so close to home.

For many locals, the Preserve was a distant landscape that was beautiful to see and enjoy the openness from afar. It quickly changed when the need to get out of the house, off the couch and away from the screen set in. The trails provide an emotional outlet. After a short time on the trail, you start to hear birds chirping and the breeze flowing through the spines of a saguaro. You want to hear more and pay closer attention to sounds you haven’t heard in a long time. You might catch a glimpse of a scurrying cottontail rabbit or a lizard darting from its place of cover only to run ahead of you. The pleasant greeting of a passing hiker reminds us that there is still kindness in this everchanging state of the world around us.

short conversations develop, and occasionally more in-depth exchanges lead to closer relationships. The desert becomes more familiar and inviting. A rock outcrop, majestic saguaro and beautiful views become part of your routine. You might have started to sleep better, lose a little weight and worked through a problem or two that had been causing stress. Initially, the thought was to get out of the house and with a little surprise you discovered the Sonoran Desert—a home that has been here all along. Happy New Year hiking!
