Plan ahead: Board Elections Soon it will be time to fill open positions on the Community
Council and Ranch Association Boards of Directors. Board members are vital to the governance of DC Ranch and implementing the DC Ranch mission through thoughtful discussions and decisionmaking for the DC Ranch community. The Council welcomes applications to serve on its board; there are currently two seats open. Applications must be submitted by Feb. 1. For more information and to apply, visit DCRanch.com.
This March, two positions will be on the ballot for Ranch Association Board of Directors selections. Owners in good standing are invited to submit their candidacy to join the Board. Newly elected directors will serve three-year terms.

Holiday décor removal reminder DC Ranch has been aglow
in beautiful holiday decorations, but now it’s time to pack them away. Seasonal decorations and lights should be removed by Jan. 15, as outlined in DCR-19. Should a resident encounter extenuating circumstances that causes delays, please contact the Community Standards team at 480.513.1500. For holidays and celebrations outside the winter holiday season, decorations are permitted during the week prior to and one week following the celebration.

DCR-26 Trash and Recycling Trash and recycling containers are provided and serviced by the City of Scottsdale. Trash and recycling containers may be placed on the street the day before scheduled pickup days but must be removed to a storage area on the same day of pickup. Residents must store these containers in an area that is not visible from neighboring property on noncollection days.
Bulk trash collection
The City of Scottsdale provides excellent tips for preparing waste for bulk collection. Homeowners are responsible for the way bulk trash is placed, so remember to follow these tips:
• Please stack items neatly, parallel to the street on your front property line, only if you do not have an alley way. • If you have an alley way, please place all bulk trash on your side of the alley along your property line only and keep the alley clear so crews can collect the material. • The piles should not exceed 10 feet long by 6 feet wide by 4 feet tall. Please place the bulk waste and green waste piles at least three feet apart from each other. • Do not place brush and bulk items in empty lots, washes or HOA common areas. • Residents may place bulk/brush out for collection no sooner than 9 days prior to the Monday of scheduled collections week. • Cut tree limbs into 6-foot segments and stack neatly so that all cut ends point in the same direction. Tree limbs and other objects must be less than 12 inches in diameter.
• Wood panels and wood fencing must be no larger than 5 feet square. • Keep cacti, glass and other sharp items separate from other items, in small, sturdy cardboard boxes and clearly labeled. Boxes should be 2'x2'x2' or smaller. • Place yard clippings (grass, leaves, palm tree skins and bark) in plastic bags. Bags must be securely tied. • Crews will only remove large debris. The equipment used often leaves behind small debris, which is the homeowner’s responsibility to clean up. • Do not place bulk trash on or within four feet of city-owned containers or bins, water meters, cable boxes, fire hydrants, block walls or other fixed objects. Wondering where to ski in Europe for the “vibe” you’re craving? For rowdy sing along songs and plenty of cowbell, head to Austria or Switzerland, such as Ishgyl, St. Anton, Kitzbühel, or Zermatt. For tamer fun, try Méribel France, the world’s largest connected ski resort, or Northern Italy from Val Gardena to Courmayeur.
Austria is known as the epicenter of après ski, “after ski.” Ischgl is renowned for bars and nightclubs that keep visitors busy all day and night. Imagine this: breakfast, slopes, afternoon DJ mountain barn party, ski down, party at a lively bar, dinner, lounge drinks and then the dance floor from 11 till you can’t stand. Kitzbühel is home to the most prestigious FIS World Cup race (and party), the Hahnenkamm, and Sölden has a lively Skischirm (umbrella) bar, dance clubs, and a base DJ.
Mooserwirt—you get the idea! Most casual places serve hearty dishes such as Schnitzel and Goulash. France celebrates fashion, champagne and joie de vivre at six La Folie Douce locations. Their Vegas-style après shows are known for elaborate costuming, singers, DJs, dancers, and fireworks, so guests arrive lunch-time-on to secure seats. By 4 p.m., dancing on tables and spraying bubbly is the norm. Many French and Italian ski towns prefer afternoon parties and less late night. Chamonix is an exception, surrounded by seven ski areas that concentrate nightlife in one town.
Looking for refined slope-side fine dining instead? Between St. Anton and Lech is Arlberg Hospiz Alm, home to the world’s largest “big bottle” wine collection. There’s a slide from the dining room to the cellar that’s especially helpful for ski boots. Sölden has Restaurant ice Q where part of James Bond’s Spectre was filmed. The Méribel region’s connected ski towns have Le Clos Bernard and Chalet L’Alpage. Chamonix has La Refuge Payot.

NEWSWORTHY Harmony between desert and dwellers DC Ranch is known for its commitment to xeriscaping and the use of native plants in landscaping since its inception. To preserve the fragile desert, the developer, DMB, made certain that streets flow with the contours of the land. Xeriscaping, which requires little water, is used throughout DC Ranch and native plants played an integral role in the original development philosophy. Even today, the DC Ranch landscape philosophy is tied directly to preserving the Sonoran Desert and saving as many cacti and trees as possible is priority for the Desert Camp Site Improvement Project.
The contractor, Haydon Building Corp., noted that, during the salvage design process, Native Resources (NRI) inspected all trees and cacti being impacted by the new design and determined which of these plants could be salvaged and which could not be relocated due to the health of the plant. Healthy plants and trees were flagged with pink and red flags. Unhealthy plants that would not survive the transplant process were tagged with a blue flag and removed. The east event lawn is serving as the onsite plant “nursery” until they can be placed back in the landscape at the end of the project.
Sustainability Committee initiatives The Sustainability Committee has been working diligently behind the scenes to develop an action plan. They will kick off their efforts in 2024 with a focus on the many aspects of recycling on the Ranch.
The Committee consists of DC Ranch resident volunteers with expertise in a variety of relevant fields including geology, stormwater, forestry, erosion, materials, to recycling; board representatives; and team members. The Thumb (9393 E. Bell Road) is holding a monthly outdoor market from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Jan. 14, March 10 and April 14. In October, the city of Scottsdale officially unveiled the much‐ anticipated Scottsdale Civic Center remodel—a comprehensive renovation of the area that has served as the city’s civic and signature special event and gathering space for 55 years. The renewed and refreshed Civic Center provides locals and visitors alike with a beautiful place to gather for art, culture, entertainment, festivals and family relaxation. “We are absolutely thrilled to officially relaunch Scottsdale Civic Center, the original epicenter of Scottsdale’s arts culture, hospitality, community spirit and unique Western reputation,” said Scottsdale Mayor David Ortega. “Going way beyond renovation, we can now enjoy three new outdoor stages, kid‐friendly play areas, botanical exhibits, 140 new shade trees and water conservation turf areas. We invite everyone to celebrate with us.”
Scottsdale Civic Center’s revitalization began with construction in October 2021. The overhaul of the area included improvements to structural and electrical deficiencies as well as enhancements to provide a safe and attractive environment for residents and visitors. Scottsdale Civic Center’s outdoor public space was also updated to be event ready, placing itself in a competitive position to attract large‐scale events. The $33.5 million project was financed

primarily with bonds approved by Scottsdale voters in 2019. Improvements include a new permanent stage at the East Bowl with a shade structure, and a new centrally located 360‐degree performance structure between the Civic Loop and West Bowl. The Social Hub, located between Scottsdale City Hall and Civic Center Library, provides direct connection to a new children’s library entrance and boasts a splash pad and fog feature, a children’s play area and shaded social and picnic areas. Substantial reconstruction of the west entrance—now named West Paseo—new restrooms near the Social Hub and updated City Hall lagoons round out the project improvements.

Naturally, art remains a core element of the Scottsdale Civic Center. Many of the beloved pieces of the Scottsdale Public Art Collection are back, with some in new locations. The intuitive Civic Loop provides a walking experience to view most of the iconic public art within Scottsdale Civic Center.

The first weekend kicks off with Family Day on Jan. 20, where children aged 12 and under enjoy complimentary admission with a paying adult. Staying active in middle age
and beyond has its challenges— joint pain, aching muscles, total body stiffness the day after a hard workout. There is the fear of injury, the challenge of exercising with a chronic illness, finding the time and finding the motivation.
But regular exercise is also one of the best ways to stay healthy as the years roll by with benefits that include weight, blood pressure and cholesterol management. Exercise has also been shown to improve mood and sleep. It’s even been shown to slow memory loss. Exercise comes easy for some and is a challenge for others. There are those who excelled in multiple sports in high school and even college, while others still have nightmares about the presidential fitness test and dread breaking a sweat.
I’ve always enjoyed sports and exercise. Over the years, I took up various recreational sports; tennis, cycling, golf, etc. In my late thirties, I joined a gym and then became a group exercise instructor. In my years of teaching, I’ve seen amazing progress from the self-professed “unathletic” as they become more confident and develop a passion for exercise.
Exercising through the years
Along the way, I’ve learned a lot about how aging impacts exercise. Our bodies just aren’t the same at 60 as they are at 20, which isn’t to say we can’t still do amazing things. There are those who run marathons and compete in triathlons well into their 70s and beyond.
Many “older” cyclists regularly compete in grueling, day long competitions. They are an inspiration for sure— but many of us aren’t quite so resilient and have adapted to kinder, gentler fitness regimes. I’ve learned ways to modify my own exercise routine and still get results. Long walks, hikes and bike rides. My focus is on maintaining strength, balance and flexibility and I know when it’s time to take a day to rest and recover. The incentives to exercise evolve with the years. It’s an added bonus to look fit, but the multiple health benefits are what keeps me moving these days. That, and I’d like to be crushing it on the pickleball court twenty years from now!

For those with a passion for nature and a desire to make
a meaningful impact, becoming a steward for the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy offers a unique opportunity to play a vital role in the preservation of this natural wonder.
The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, founded in 1991, is a non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and sustaining the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Stretching over more than 30,500 acres, the Preserve is a haven for wildlife, a refuge for native plants and a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. To ensure the longevity of this ecological treasure, the Conservancy relies on the dedication of volunteers known as stewards. Becoming one of over 550 stewards is a journey of education, commitment, and hands-on experience. The first step involves enrolling in the Steward Training Program, a com-
prehensive curriculum designed to impart knowledge about the Preserve’s ecology, geology and cultural history. Once they earn their badges, stewards delve into the intricacies of desert flora and fauna, learn about

One of the primary responsibilities of a steward is to serve as a knowledgeable ambassador for the Preserve. Stewards lead guided hikes, educational programs, and community outreach initiatives. By sharing their passion and knowledge, they play a pivotal role in fostering a greater appreciation for the desert and the importance of conservation. The rewards of becoming a steward extend beyond the satisfaction of contributing to environmental
conservation. Stewards form a close-knit community of like-minded individuals, united by their love for nature and commitment to preserving it. The sense of camaraderie and shared purpose creates a fulfilling experience that goes beyond the tangible impact on the Preserve. Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art (SMoCA) will
celebrate its 25th anniversary on Feb. 14 and will also open the first major U.S. museum exhibition on the prolific, yet underrecognized, American painter Dorothy Fratt.
Debuting on Feb. 3, “Dorothy Fratt: Color Mirage” will span more than five decades of the late artist’s oeuvre, presenting a selection of foundational early works and ephemera alongside numerous paintings that exemplify Fratt’s vibrant and distinct style of abstraction. “‛Dorothy Fratt: Color Mirage’ is the most comprehensive retrospective to date of an artist who has been incredibly important to the greater Phoenix community but largely unrecognized in the artworld,” said Jennifer McCabe, director and chief curator at SMoCA.

Fratt (1923–2017) was born in Washington, D.C., and moved to Phoenix in 1958. It was in Arizona where Fratt began teaching private classes and solidified her unmistakable style of abstraction and mastery of color. In 1972, Fratt moved to Scottsdale, where she worked with city officials to commission a major public artwork by sculptor Louise Nevelson, “Windows to the West,”
“As the field of art history slowly opens its frame of reference to include women and people of color, for example, more and more artists such as Fratt are coming into view,” McCabe said. “A comprehensive survey of Fratt’s work at SMoCA, in her adopted hometown, is a first step in that direction—an opportunity to celebrate a much-loved artist and share, with a larger audience, the impact of a great American painter.”

“Working at the margins of the art world, Fratt made abstract paintings inspired by the freedom of space she found in the Arizona desert,” said Lauren R. O’Connell, curator of contemporary art at SMoCA. “She possessed a clear philosophy toward making art that was both an intellectual and intuitive pursuit, making her a true visionary of her time.”
The exhibition is accompanied by the artist’s first monograph, co-published with Radius Books and available in October 2023. The catalog presents new scholarly essays; an extensive biography; artist conversations with Teresa Baker, Caroline Kent and Rebecca Ward; and color illustrations of artworks and ephemera. SMoCA—named “Best Art Museum” by the Phoenix New Times in the 2023 Best of Phoenix awards—is located at 7374 E. Second St., Scottsdale, Arizona 85251.
