Interconnectedness

Jenna Kohl Community Council Executive Director

DC Ranch News is a not-for-profit newspaper published by the DC Ranch Community Council to promote the DC Ranch lifestyle. The publication strives to build community by connecting current and future residents along with DC Ranch stakeholders through interesting stories and pictures. Ranch News offers value to its advertisers and perpetuates DC Ranch’s community values. DC RanchCommunity Council spotlights local businesses as a service to the community and for information purposes only. DC Ranch does not recommend or endorse any described products or services.

The story goes that one of DC Ranch’s founding fathers said early in the conceptualization of DC Ranch that he wanted to design a community where his son could go to a friend’s house in any neighborhood without having to cross a street bigger than the one in front of his home. Indeed, the community was designed with the pedestrian in mind, and the ability for a DC Ranch resident to enjoy parks, paths and trails throughout the community. While DC Ranch is comprised of 4 villages with 26 distinct neighborhoods, each with its own flavor and style, we are all one DC Ranch.

Gates control vehicular access into neighborhoods, but if a walk, stroll, bike or run is your choice, you can step outside and be on our extensive path and trail system within minutes. That sets DC Ranch apart and makes the community unique. If you decide to traverse DC Ranch on foot to enjoy the beauty and character of each neighborhood, please remember to treat other Community Engagement Director Jona Davis Senior Communications Manager Mike Gertzman Communications Coordinators Elizabeth Dankert, Alexandra Duemer and Terri Raimondi 480.513.1500 communications.team @dcranchinc.com dcranch.com

Monsoon season is right around the corner, and if any paths are closed for cleanup after a storm, there will be signage to give you a heads up. Interconnectedness has value in more than just our paths and trails and neighborhoods. It speaks to our synergy with the desert, enables us to meet each other, builds relationships, and increases our sense of community, making us safer, more satisfied, and healthier.

Home sale pre-inspection request changes Home resales remain robust in DC Ranch. Buyers are making offers before real estate agents can list homes on the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) or hold an open house. The Community Standards Department must conduct a Transfer and Disclosure (T&D) inspection prior to a home being sold to a new owner. Before experiencing this hot real estate market, DC Ranch encouraged T&D pre-inspections before an owner listed a home for sale. However, it has been difficult to conduct pre-inspections, as a 45-day period

Father’s Day

Campari Tomato Agrodolce

By Leann Jordan aka “Mama J” | Leannjordantv.com

Ingredients • 1 pound Campari tomatoes, quartered • 12 oz. container medley tomatoes, halved • 2 red onions, peeled, halved and shaved • 1 Tablespoon kosher salt • 2 teaspoons cracked black pepper • 2 teaspoons chopped tarragon • Chopped chives, garnish • Blue cheese, crumbled, garnish

Agrodolce Sauce

• 1 Tablespoon garlic, minced • 2 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar • 3 Tablespoons honey • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt

• 2 Tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 2 Tablespoons melted brown butter. Melt in saucepan on medium low heat. Stir and remove when butter is light brown.

Method Sauce

Mix garlic, vinegar, honey, salt and olive oil together. Add the warm brown butter and whisk. Garnish with sesame seeds. Serve or place pasta in the refrigerator to chill.

Assembly

In a large mixing bowl, fold the salad ingredients until blended. Drizzle the Agrodolce over the vegetables and mix gently. Garnish with the chives and blue cheese. Serve.

Gifts from the heart for dad • Buy a decorative piece of wood and cover it with Mod Podge (available at any craft store). Place a photo on the wood. Use the Mod Podge again to seal your work. • Make dad a memory jar. Using Lego duplos have the kids write dads’ favorite activities on each lego. Fill the jar and create a special memories tag. Pick a Lego from the jar for family fun options. Dad will treasure this forever keepsake. • Perk up dad’s golf game with colored golf balls. Buy golf balls and have the family decorate them with paint or markers.

Adults and kids will cherish this activity. Have mom decorate too. • Make dad an edible tackle box. Use a craft organizer resembling a tackle box. Fill with Swiss fish and gummy worms. Create your own unique stamp and use Mod Podge to secure it to the tackle box. • Make Mama J’s (that’s me) gooey fudge brownies for dad. Pick up a pretty box and wrappings at the craft store. Find the recipe at leannjordantv.com.

NEWSWORTHY Later this year, residents will be asked to participate in meetings to clarify what amenities they would like to see developed in Phase Two of the Park. Residents will also be informed of opportunities to help advocate for the Park’s inclusion in the City’s CIP budget when appropriate.

RESIDENTS COULD BENEFIT FROM PARK COMPLETION The City of Scottsdale is currently constructing Phase One of the DC Ranch Neighborhood Park. This 14-acre parcel is located at 91st Street and Trailside View, just south of the DC Ranch Crossing shopping center and Camden Foothills Apartments. Phase One consists of a 2-acre lake accompanied by a pump house, picnic ramada, benches, and landscaping to include grass areas, more than 60 tress, pathways, and lighting. The lake is slated to open to the public in December or January.

If you would like more information, please contact Chris Irish, Director of Public Affairs at christine.irish@ dranchinc.com

VISIT THE NEW DCRANCH.COM

Currently, the City of Scottsdale has no plans to finish the park by funding and constructing Phase Two. The Community Phase one construction under way. Council feels that DC Ranch residents will be better served with the entire park developed. For this to happen, the Community Council will advocate for the DC Ranch Neighborhood Park to be included in the City of Scottsdale’s Capital Improvement Project (CIP) Budget. This will not be an easy or fast process as the City plans its CIP five years in advance, and there is a great deal of competition for funding projects desired by citizens throughout Scottsdale.

OVER $100 MILLION SOLD IN 2020 By Alexandra Duemer | Community Council

Founded in the early 2000s, Grapenuts Wine Club is one of DC Ranch’s longest standing clubs. Residents gather each month and bring a bottle of wine and small bites to learn more about wine. A certified sommelier since 2016, the Scottsdale resident has been a regular host for this popular wine club.

Mustafa says, “I love it when there are people who don’t know much about wine, and I can teach them something new.” When residents attend Grapenuts, Mustafa hopes they come away with a keen sense of the grape, how to know which wine to buy and even the language to look for on a wine label. Virtual tastings during the pandemic changed the meeting format slightly, but Mustafa prefers to see the glass half full. “It provided more of a deep dive on wines and the region. Plus, people could just relax from home and enjoy the wine.”

Her initial goal for wine education classes was so Mustafa would know what to order from an intimidating wine list. “Even from just a few classes, my knowledge of wine was catapulted,” she says. Her passion was shared with friends when she began hosting themed wine tastings at home. Word of mouth quickly connected Mustafa with various organizations to host wine events.

LUXURY DEFINED

This year, she looks forward to introducing residents to the exploding selection of Chilean wines, her favorite Arizona wineries and even comparison tastings from regions like Willamette Valley, Oregon and Burgundy, France. Nadia’s most important question: do you enjoy the wine? That’s all that matters. Visit DCRanch.com to learn more about upcoming Grapenuts. Cheers!

One sip at a time with Nadia Mustafa Nadia’s tasting tips: 1. Chill your whites to 49-55 degrees and reds to 62-68. Yes, chill your reds! 2. Pour a glass (ideally one with a stem). Don’t swirl yet! 3. Angle the glass slightly to check out the color. Light, medium, dark? 4. Stick your nose in and take a whiff. What do you smell? Fruit? Flower? Herb? Toast? 5. Swirl. Sniff again. Is it different? The aromas should be more intense. 6. Now the part we’ve been waiting for … take a sip. Let it roll across your tongue slowly. What do you taste? Fruit? Flower? Spice? Vanilla? 7. Sip again. Is the wine dry or sweet? 8. Sip. What is the body of the wine? Does it feel like skim milk (light), 2% (medium), or half & half (full)? 9. Sip. Is it acidic or tannic? If your mouth is watering, it’s got acid. If your mouth feels dry, it’s got tannins. 10. Sip. What’s the alcohol level? Do you feel heat in your throat or chest? If so, it’s high alcohol. 11. Sip. Is the wine balanced? Is there one characteristic that overwhelms, or are all the elements cohesive? 12. Sip. Is the wine complex? Does it evolve as it moves along your tongue (complex)? Or is it gulp-able and redundant (lacking complexity)? 13. Sip. How’s the finish? After swallowing, for how many seconds does the good stuff linger on your palate? If more than 10 seconds, that’s a long finish. 14. Is it a “quality” wine? If it has a long finish plus high complexity, it likely is.

WRANGLER TRAIL AT BROWN’S RANCH At the base of Brown’s Mountain lies the Wrangler Trail. It is a gently rolling 2.7-mile hike that passes through two interesting desert washes. Because of these washes, the drainages provide a corridor for wildlife movement and has lush plant life due to the proximity to water when it rains. When passing through the area, you may even see animal scat or tracks! The Wrangler Trail offers expansive views of the Four Peaks (as seen on the Arizona State license plate) to the east, Tom’s Thumb to the southeast, and Camelback Mountain to the south. To the west, you will be able to take in views of the White Tank Mountains. Brown’s Mountain is unique in that the light bands of rock near the top of the mountain have formed from compressed volcanic ash called tuff that may have come from the Superstition Mountains nearly 20 miles

away. Volcanic activity in the area is why Brown’s Mountain’s terrain and unique desert-scape is what we see today. Cone Mountain, immediately to the east, is not an extinct volcano but was created by erosion and volcanic activity in the area. Along the shoulders of this mountain are some dramatic granite boulder outcroppings. These boulders are home to various wildlife using them for shelter or perches and provide much-needed shade and some water retention.

THE SAGUARO LOOP TRAIL AT THE GATEWAY TRAILHEAD

The Saguaro Loop Trail is a wonderful trail for families or those just getting into hiking at a roundtrip distance of 1.1 miles and rated as easy. Depending on how much time you spend admiring the beautiful surrounding desert, including many picturesque saguaros, it usually takes about 30 minutes to hike this trail. As you make your way around

Beginner trails in the Preserve THERE ARE NUMEROUS TRAILS TO CHOOSE FROM, BUT HERE ARE TWO EASY HIKES TO GET YOU STARTED AND INTRODUCED TO THE MCDOWELL MOUNTAIN PRESERVE. the loop, take time to appreciate the great western views of the area. Heading back towards the trailhead, if you want a little bit more of a hike, you can always meander along the Bajada Nature Trail Loop. This trail is flat and provides interesting information on the desert plant life,

animals and geology. This option adds about 0.5 mile to your hike.

Whenever you venture on a hike— especially during summer—remember to wear sunscreen, bring plenty of water, a map, hat and cell phone. Happy hiking!

By Ben Hoster | Scottsdale Police Department

In 2008, Scottsdale became the first city to offer a full-time crisis center with a dog in the U.S. A proven success, service dogs respond to critical incidents by supporting victims of trauma. Now, the Scottsdale Police Department has a new Crisis Response K9 named Rocket. He is also the first police K9 to be assigned to a School Resource Officer (SRO) in Maricopa County. The SPD School Resource Unit canine program is modeled after the SPD Police Crisis Intervention Services (PCIS) canine program and the Pima County Sheriff’s Office School Resource Officer canine program.

a rock star on campus. His duties include providing comfort to victims, assisting counselors, calming high-stress situations and bridging gaps with community members.

Rocket, a 2-year-old Golden Retriever, was obtained from “Paws With A Cause,” a Michigan-based organization that custom-trains service dogs. “We wanted Rocket and Officer Lines a dog that would be comfortable walking into a room with 30 kids, but could also be one-on-one. Training continues for a few hours every week for obedience and therapy talents. We are lifelong learners,” says Lines.

Rocket is assigned to SRO Devon Lines at Chaparral High School and will travel to other schools. Officer Lines has been at Chaparral for 5 years and wanted to bring a new calm to the school as kids seemed to be experiencing more stress. Since February, Rocket has become

Initial funding for Rocket’s assignment was provided by the Chaparral High School Association of Parents and Teachers (CHAPTS) and the Scottsdale Unified School District Foundation, which raised more than $34,000 to

support SPD’s new School Resource Unit canine program. The Foundation intends to continue its support of Rocket, with the hope of expanding the program to other SUSD campuses.

All current SROs are Crisis Intervention Trained (CIT) and are experienced in helping with behavioral health-related incidents. The first contact a young person has with police is often with an SRO. Rocket will be a resource to comfort student victims of crime. Rocket also provides an outlet for students experiencing behavioral health crisis situations (including diagnosed and undiagnosed mental illness, anxiety, depression, autism, etc.). SRO’s are responsible for several community outreach programs, including Teen Academy, G.R.E.A.T program, Cadet Program, and many other informal outreach efforts.

“We’ve been working on placing a service dog at one of our high schools for over a year,” says SUSD’s Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education, Dr. Milissa Sackos. “Rocket is opening up important, new avenues of communication with our students.”

MEET CHASE AND COCO Chase, an English Chocolate Lab, responds to crisis calls of homicide, suicide and other traumatic events to work with victims. He immediately gives them a warm, fuzzy level of comfort. Anthony Pagliucia, handler and Police Crisis Intervention Specialist says, “We’re so lucky to have these fourlegged partners. The dogs know when they are working because of the harness and they feel proud to do their job.” Coco the Chihuahua is a new goodwill ambassador for the Scottsdale Police Department.
