Unique and special
Kohl Community Council Executive DirectorBack in the early 2000s, geocaching was gaining popularity as a way to blend the use of technology and geography to find mystery boxes hidden in the great outdoors and share the findings in logbooks and on social media platforms. GPS technology had recently been made available to the public at large, and the new activity of geocaching appealed to our sense of adventure. Flash forward to 2023 when our lives are heavily dependent on GPS technology for navigation, monitoring family members, tracking our outdoor workouts, even finding Pokémon—how did we ever live without it? The use of GPS technology has expanded over the years to include EarthCaching.
According to the Geological Society of America, an EarthCache is not just a scenic view or a locality. They present some lesson on how that place formed, about why that place is important scientifically or what that site can tell us about our planet. It’s a specific, and special, location

Homeowners considering any changes to their residence are encouraged to review DCR-16: Property Modifications including Exterior Remodeling and Repairs.
Any construction, erection, or placement of anything, permanently or temporarily, on the outside portions of the member's property, including landscape alterations, whether such portions are improved or unimproved, is prohibited except in strict compliance with the provisions of Article IV of the CC&Rs. View details on DCRanch.com. All modifications shall be submitted to the Modification Committee by filling out a form available on DCRanch.com or at The Ranch Offices. Pretty patterns of Portugal
By Kat Thatcher | Resident contributorIntrinsic arts comprise the visual characteristic of a place; “the vibe” so to speak. In Portugal’s case, the feel comes from embedded decoration on walls and sidewalks.
Settled originally by North African Moors, the Iberian Peninsula is infused with their design taste of fine curvilinear vine scroll and a love of heavy decoration. Their history of tilemaking was well suited to creating durable building exteriors. Renowned for the desirable benefits of a seaside climate, Portugal’s locale can wreak havoc with materials, causing wood decay and metal rust, covered in a crusty salt layer. Tile lends a smooth, impermeable surface which both protects building structure and creates an easily cleanable surface.
These fully tiled buildings of Portugal are often drop-dead-gorgeous and “insta worthy.” The multicolored patchwork throughout the cities create quaint vistas at every turn. Doorways and quatrefoil windows are often in stone, with metal fretwork balconies similar to those in New Orleans.
Tiles may be uniform in color, perhaps emerald green, azure blue or cornflower yellow, with just a bit of texture. They may be heavily textured, mold pressed, perhaps in the design of a flower, and painted in two to three colors. Or they may be smooth bisque white tiles painted in fine scrolling designs with arabesques and leaves. Set side by side and fronting an entire façade, each building has a unique personality all its own.
Sidewalks present another alluring pat terned surface, albeit in black or white. Many are familiar with Rio de Janeiro’s famous wavy black and white sidewalks, yet don’t realize these were directly imported from Portugal. The eye
bounces from buildings to sidewalk and back, as if viewing a vertical tennis match.
Needing ballast for their ships, the Portuguese brought igneous rock to South America and “dolled up” the sidewalks. In the homeland of Portugal, sidewalks and promenades throughout the country are lined with multitudes of stately and regal designs.
Hapless tourists must watch their step as they stare at the beauteous buildings above, as treachery can await below. Polished by the tread of thousands of feet, cobblestone blocks can become quite slippery, and tree roots, able to freely uplift the blocks as they grow, can create trip zones.
Ubiquitous tuk-tuks buzz about cities, carting visitors to various sites speedily. Despite teeth-chattering bumpiness, it frees them up for a photo frenzy, as the passing beauty enchants them.

Visit The Homestead during Desert Camp renovation
The transformation of Desert Camp Community Center, a centerpiece of DC Ranch, has long been in the works. For safety reasons, the Desert Camp site will be fenced and closed for the duration of construction, which is anticipated to take 9-12 months. While the Desert Camp site is under construction, hours will be expanded at The Homestead Community Center to accommodate events and programs, including considerations for clubs and drop-in activities. Residents are also welcome to stop in for a cup of coffee or refill their water bottle while on a walk or bike ride. For the most up-to-date programming information visit the DCRanch.com calendar.
Located on Legacy Blvd. just west of Thompson Peak Parkway, amenities at The Homestead include a basketball court, an adventure playground, and splash pad water feature.
Reata Wash Flood Control Project
In July, the City of Scottsdale submitted a 30% design plan for the Reata Wash Flood Control Project to FEMA. Once the 30% design plan is approved by FEMA, the city will finish the design and make plans for implementation. This will include securing funds from the Maricopa County Flood Control District and in the city’s Capital Improvement Budget, along with seeking construction bids and contracts. The city states that construction will be done in phases, stretching over 4-5 years. Completion of the project is currently projected for 2028, with an additional year needed for final FEMA approval. Residents should not expect to see flood insurance requirement changes and/or elimination until 2029 or later.

Your Floor & More
The City of Scottsdale is finalizing the design plan for a 3.5-acre off-leash dog park at the southwest corner of Hayden and Thompson Peak. Approved by voters in the 2019 Bond election, the dog park will have three fenced areas, shade structures along the edges, access to a nearby restroom and its own parking lot. Surfaces in addition to grass are being considered as they would allow for less maintenance downtime. Construction is estimated to start after the first of the year with a completion date in 2025.
To maintain DC Ranch’s desirability and premium home values, a strategic planning initiative, DCR2020, launched in 2016. The goal of DCR2020 was to guide operational decisions and improvements over the course of three to five years.
Eight Standing Principles (the foundation of the strategic plan) and six Strategic Initiatives (focus areas) were developed with hundreds of tactics. It was very ambitious but almost all the tactics were accomplished by the target date of 2020.
By Jona Davis | Community CouncilThe intent for DCR2025 is to refresh the plan. Rather than starting over, the current Strategic Initiatives are being tested to see if they are still valid, if they resonate now and identify the focus for the next three to five years.
As with DCR2020, a crucial initial component of the process was resident input. The input sessions were administered by Douglas Griffen, founder of Advanced Strategy Center (ASC). Each session was a professionally facilitated, virtual, short (one-hour) interactive session with other residents. The on-line format allowed significant and valuable information to be gathered in a short timeframe. Over 100 residents participated in the seven sessions offered in February. In addition to resident sessions, three other groups participated in sessions this spring including stakeholders, the DC Ranch team and a joint session with the Ranch Association and Community Council Boards.
“Residents indicated that there is a lot to like about DC Ranch. The overall setting and proximity to the mountains, easy access to Scottsdale and the Valley, a sense of safety, the community ‘feel,’ protection of home values, walkability, good communication and quality standards all matter. This is not about creating a special place—it’s about maintaining that place for the future,” Griffen reported.
KEY MESSAGES
According to Griffen the participants indicated that DC Ranch is a phenomenal community. Yet, the community cannot stand still—it needs to be based on strong principles, but continually look at what’s changing around it and how it needs to evolve to maintain its premier brand reputation and value. Some initial overarching themes that emerged throughout the feedback sessions were:
DC Ranch has stood the test of time
It remains a gem in the North Scottsdale area and has attributes that cannot easily be replicated. It’s not about inventing DC Ranch, it’s about evolving DC Ranch.
Core personal/emotional values are priorities
Continue to invest in safety, community, lifestyle, tranquility of the mountains/outdoors and convenience of amenities.
Residents are feeling a changing Scottsdale
It’s not about being isolated at DC Ranch, but it is about protecting the lifestyle. Noise, traffic, overdevelopment, crime, density, rising inflation and encroachment feel real.
The long term matters
A focus on environmental sustainability, infrastructure, supporting technology, traffic flow, development standards, lifestyle amenities is important as most residents see themselves living in DC Ranch for the duration.
The structure of the strategic plan is solid DCR2020 Standing Principles and Strategic Initiatives appear to be an excellent and durable foundation for DCR2025. What should change are the actionable projects within each of the strategic focus areas. The feedback sessions were exceptionally helpful in setting the stay for the development of those specific actional projects for the next phase.
Both the DC Ranch Community Council and Ranch Association Boards of Directors have made a strong and consistent commitment to the implementation of the strategic plan by 2025. The Community Council and Ranch Association will take the leadership role in updating and activating the plan through the following steps: Revise strategies, tactics and measurements for the Principles and Initiatives
• The overall set of data and responses will guide the DCR2025 process moving forward. The boards and the leadership teams will take the necessary time to review the data.
• To track progress, key performance indicators are needed. This step also creates an ongoing platform for resident engagement though a variety of avenues which may include small focus groups, committees or surveys.
Communication to residents and boards
• Throughout the process, updates will be provided to residents and the boards to share progress, maintain transparency and provide accountability. Monitor trends, risks or opportunities that might influence the strategic plan
• A strategic plan cannot be stagnant. By maintaining strong two-way interaction with residents, business owners and the community at large, DC Ranch will be able to identify and stay ahead of emerging trends and issues that could impact the strategic plan. Visit DCRanch.com/DCR2025 for updates and more information including the full description of each of the Principles and Initiatives.

Mirasol Café is a new, locally owned and operated gelateria and bakeshop on Market Street. Owners Dirck Noordhoff and Ethan Dezzani bring years of retail and restaurant experience, which includes founding and currently running multiple highly successful cafe locations in Honolulu, Hawaii. So what brings them to DC Ranch?
Friends of Noordhoff have a business nearby and noticed the previous café here was often closed. They thought Noordhoff should look into bringing his concept to Scottsdale. “Things happen for a reason and the solution to take over the space really worked out for everyone involved,” says Noordhoff. After opening this July with a small budget and a lot of sweat equity, their experience from previous businesses allows them to embrace the process of establishing themselves in the community. They are learning about what customers here like, fine tuning the visuals of the space, and have plans to add lounge seating and music to the patio area.
Noordhoff travels back and forth to Hawaii, but Dezzani can be found welcoming customers from behind the counter and offering samples of gelato every day, as he completes his business degree at ASU. “I enjoy the excitement of entrepreneurship and creating a space where people can come together and find some happiness in their day. Joy and connection is really what it’s about,” Dezzani says.
Open daily from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., the menu provides a delicious treat for any time of day. Mirasol Cafe offerings include artisan gelato, top tier Illy coffee, freshly baked pastries, cookies, croissant sandwiches and health bowls with acai or pitaya and fresh fruit.
Taking great pride in their secret gelato formula, which comes all the way from Torino, Italy, they offer 16 flavors of gelato to choose from. And with a formula base of over 100 flavors they ensure every sweet tooth is satisfied. The chocolate, oreo and fresh fruit sorbet flavors are popular standbys, but you can also enjoy holiday flavors like apple pie and peppermint. If you’re hosting a party, specialty flavors can be ordered and created as quickly as the next day.
So stop in to say hello and enjoy a little pick me up!
Arizonans eagerly welcome relief from the heat as cooler weather brings a range of enjoyable opportunities for outdoor fun. At DC Ranch, this anticipation includes the introduction of a new outdoor activity called RanchCaching—a program where adventure, education and environmental stewardship come together!
If you’ve ever tried geocaching, RanchCaching offers a unique twist on traditional treasure hunting through the use of an app on your smartphone. The self-guided activity combines the thrill of exploration with geological enlightenment. Thanks to the vast knowledge of the DC Ranch Landscape team and the Historic Committee, each location contains fascinating information on the natural and historical wonders of the Sonoran Desert found along the 50-mile path and trail system and throughout the community.
Starting later this month, residents may pick up their “Path & Trail Passport” along with fun stickers and a first aid kit at The Homestead Community Center. Each passport booklet contains helpful tips on how to get started, which wayfinding mobile app to utilize with instructions on how to do so, coordinates to each RanchCache
location, hiking safety tips and best practices for Leave No Trace principles.
Participants are encouraged to embrace the phrase “take only pictures, leave only footprints,” as they snap and share photos of their discoveries along the way.
In addition to RanchCache, DC Ranch will take strides toward living more connected with the introduction of community walks starting in January 2024. Whether you're looking to boost your fitness, meet neighbors and make new friends, or simply enjoy the outdoors, these community walks are the perfect way to start. One group gathering per month will take place on a different section of the path and trail system during the winter, early spring and fall seasons. Be on the lookout for more information coming soon.
Whether you're a nature lover, history buff, or simply someone who appreciates an opportunity to get some fresh air and foster personal connections, there are plenty of exciting opportunities that await the DC Ranch community. By adhering to safety guidelines and respecting nature, we can ensure that these program experiences are not only enriching, but also sustainable for years to come.

Canal Convergence returns Nov. 3-12
Scottsdale Arts’ Canal Convergence will explore the power and influence that play has in our lives through engaging public art, performances and programming from Nov. 3–12 at the Scottsdale Waterfront. • The free, 10-night event features large-scale public artworks created by artists from around the world alongside live music and dance performances, creative workshops, educational tours and activities, food trucks, and a beer and wine garden. In addition to the event’s perennial focus on the union of water, art, and light, interactivity and sustainability, this year’s featured theme is “The Power of Play.” • “Since play is often associated with games, fun and childhood, acts of play can sometimes be dismissed as trivial or inconsequential,” said Jennifer Gill, deputy director of Canal Convergence. “However, play also taps into humanity’s most basic instincts to facilitate learning, growth, and social engagement. For this year’s Canal Convergence, we wanted to highlight this vital part of the human experience through an equally important part of human development and social engagement: Art.” • For 2023’s event, Gill challenged artists to propose engaging and immersive public artworks that speak to play and acts of play’s importance in people’s lives. • Learn more at CanalConvergence.com.
