Pumpkin spice candles, warm apple pie, brisk fall hikes, and outdoor activities return this month. While we enjoy the cooler weather here on the Ranch, your DC Ranch team is planning for the future through the annual budget process. The Community Council, the Ranch Association, and Covenant Commission begin in mid-summer to craft cost projections and budgets for 2022, taking into consideration resident requests, board direction, housing trends, community needs and other factors. Finance committees and boards consisting of DC Ranch residents from throughout the community review the budget proposals in early fall in preparation for formal presentations this month. Neighborhood Voting Member election NVM Election Timeline kicks off this month The Neighborhood Voting Member (NVM) election gets underway this month. Residents elect 44 neighbors to serve the neighborhoods where they live by voting on Ranch Association matters requiring a “member vote.” Their most significant duty is the election of the Board of Directors, which occurs in early April each year. While board members serve staggered threeyear terms, NVMs are elected annually. The NVM election period begins Oct. 1 and concludes Dec. 14 as new terms start Jan. 1. Any owner who is in good standing with the Association is eligible to serve. The goal is to have representatives for all 44 NVM positions, so please consider serving in this fulfilling volunteer capacity. NVMs are essential at DC Ranch. They greet new residents, facilitate communications from the neighborhood to the Association and are an excellent resource for information. Please join us in thanking the many friends and neighbors who have served their neighborhoods in this capacity.
Show your style with decorating flair Fall is finally here, and the holiday season approaches. It’s that special time of year when residents can show off their decorating flair. According to DCR-19, holiday displays are permitted from Oct. 1 through Jan. 15. Residents are asked to be considerate of neighbors by avoiding excessive light or noise at night. In the Upper Canyon and Horseshoe Canyon of Silverleaf, roof décor is not permitted. If unsure whether your holiday décor adheres to the community guidelines, check with a Community Standards Specialist by calling 480.977.1299. For holidays and celebrations throughout other times of the year, decorations are permitted one week prior and must be removed one week after.

Security services contract under review The Ranch Association invited five security services providers familiar with servicing large-scale communities such as DC Ranch to present proposals for the community’s three-year contract, effective Dec. 28, 2021. Two were selected to present before the Ranch Association Board and members at an open meeting held the third week of September. International agency Securitas and current provider, Anderson Security Agency, won the opportunity to present. In September 2019, the Board contracted with Anderson Security Agency, which agreed to provide additional services requested by residents, such as snake removal and EMR training for the Community Patrol officers. Other items under consideration in the 2021-2024 services agreement include new Toyota 4-Runners in place of the Toyota Tacomas and Prius, cross-training of all gatehouse guards, new snake safety equipment and creation of a training manager position. The Board will inform Residents of its decision in a community-wide email scheduled for early November.

Spray an 8" cast-iron pan with non-stick bakery spray. 5. Sprinkle the crumbs into the pan. Pack the crumbs over the bottom and up the sides. The crust will be thick. Eat local. The future of food in Arizona.
Are edible landscapes and trees the answer to Arizona’s rising climate crisis? How do we address shrinking farmland? How are farms helping food banks? These important questions propel the Good Food Film Series, produced by Local First Arizona’s Good Food Finder. The film series features monthly, independent short film releases devoted to telling Arizona’s local food system’s most urgent and inspiring stories through February 2022.
“The Good Food Film Series conveys just how passionate and committed our local farmers are to feeding our community—even when the odds are against them,” said Somlynn Rorie, Local First Arizona’s Food and Farms Initiatives Manager. “The next set of films look at the innovative and creative solutions some of our farmers are using to conquer the ever-changing landscape of foreshadowing drought and declining access to farmable land. It’s a testament to how precious and vital these stewards of the land are to our local food system and should be seen and supported at all costs.”
After an exhausting multi-year search, Blue Sky Organic Farm had to replace the leased acreage that they lost this summer due to a housing development being built. Farmer David Vose and farm manager Sara Dolan found 40 acres in Waddell that they will be leasing, but multiple farmers in Maricopa County are dealing with the same challenge of finding suitable farmland in this rapidly developing region. Preserving farmland must be a higher priority, as it provides community members access to healthy foods, retains green space in our cities and sustains farmers who have great knowledge about growing food in the desert. Corks and Collars on Market Street By Dan Grimm
The Desert Labrador Retriever Rescue (DLRR) is holding its 13th annual Corks and Collars Silent Auction and Gala event in the DC Ranch Marketplace Plaza on Saturday, Nov. 13, from 2 to 5 p.m. This year’s fundraiser is more critical than ever as requests by owners to surrender Labs and requests by shelters to transfer Labs to DLRR have skyrocketed.
DLRR is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) and 100% volunteer organization dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of unwanted, neglected, and abused Labs found throughout Arizona, as well as those that are surrendered by owners no longer able to care for them. We then find them loving, life-long homes. Since 1999 DLRR has rescued more than 5,000 Labs and is solely funded through donations and fund-raising efforts of our volunteers.
The annual Corks and Collars outdoor celebration Auction action is DLRR’s premier fundraiser, where attendees can join other Lab-lovers to enjoy food, taste wine, bid on silent auction items, win prizes and help raise funds that allow us to continue in our mission. Yellow Lab Susie is but one example of the thousands of Labradors whose lives have been transformed through the work of DLRR.
Not yet 12-weeks-old, Susie’s life had barely begun when she found herself on the e-list at an overcrowded county animal shelter. An e-list is a term used in animal rescue that means she Susie and Bear would be euthanized if no adopter or rescue took her home before the e-list date. DLRR took her in, placed her in a loving foster home, and ensured she was ready to start life anew with a family hat would show her the love and life she deserved to experience. Over five years and one knee surgery later, Susie still hasn't slowed down a step! She patrols the yard for lizards and enjoys hikes in the mountains and trips to the ocean with her younger fur brother Bear. With your participation in Corks and Collars 2021, DLRR can continue to rescue Labs like Susie. We hope to see you there! Tour de Scottsdale rolls to a stop By Gabi Enriquez | Community Council
The Tour de Scottsdale has been a yearly tradition and charitable staple for DC Ranch since its inception in 2004. What started as a small local bicycling event blossomed into an event that, at its peak registration, hosted up to 2,000 cyclists from across the globe. The challenging 30- and 70-mile rides gave sweeping views of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. Working with our longstanding partner, The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, DC Ranch helped raise over $600,000 to aid in their efforts and dedication towards science, education and stewardship of the nation’s largest urban land preserve. “The support we’ve received from being the beneficiary of Tour de Scottsdale has helped the Conservancy so much over the years. Since its beginning, the Tour has raised funds enabling us to educate thousands of youth about our amazing Sonoran Desert and the importance of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve,” says Justin Owen, Chief Executive Officer for the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy. In response to health and safety requirements due to the pandemic, the 2020 Tour de Scottsdale shifted
to a virtual event that allowed cyclists to participate by riding and tracking their miles from anywhere in the world. A total of 139 cyclists submitted their results to earn a commemorative medal and support The Conservancy through registration fees and donations.

Meet your Board Members COMMUNITY COUNCIL Sheryl Lowenhar, Director After a career as a sales and marketing executive with healthcare software companies, I decided to retire and enjoy life in Scottsdale. With more time on my hands, I started to look for volunteer opportunities with organizations whose mission and objectives resonated with me. The Community Council’s mission of facilitating a connected and welcoming community that instills pride and a sense of belonging lead me to get involved in the community I call home. My DC Ranch volunteer experience started with attending some Women’s Club planning meetings where I helped launch the women’s Liking Hiking group. I also lead the Pickleball Club. In addition, I have the privilege of being a member of the Speaker Series and the Master Plan steering committees.
Serving on the Board and being involved in these other activities, I experience the “Living Connected” mission every day. I have made lasting friendships with neighbors who provided great support during the pandemic. I certainly get more out of volunteering than I give and would urge everyone to give it a try.
Alexander Townsend, Treasurer/Secretary
After several job-related relocations, my wife and I decided to make one final move to a place where we wanted to settle down permanently. While we knew we wanted to live in North Scottsdale, we weren't very familiar with the area. Luckily, we had a great real estate agent that alerted us to DC Ranch. While visiting the various neighborhoods within DC Ranch, we were fortunate to meet residents who kindly shared their experience of living here—and we were sold!
I knew I wanted to be an active resident and directly contribute to the decisions that shape DC Ranch. I decided to seek out a position on the Community Council Board of Directors and I am thrilled that I did. Being in a position to engage residents and fellow Board members on issues that impact our community, and to take appropriate action, has been very fulfilling. In fact, I wanted to further my involvement and was honored to be elected for the Treasurer/Secretary position. In addition to my contributions as a Board member, I now have the responsibility to ensure that the Community Council continues its impressive financial position with the appropriate best practices around policies and procedures. Serving the community is a great privilege and I look forward to contributing to DC Ranch's bright future.

RANCH ASSOCIATION Greg Kiraly, Director As a result of both of our daughters enrolling in ASU’s engineering school several years ago, my wife Patty and I decided to move a bit closer to them. We found DC Ranch as a referral from a friend in New Jersey, and we are so glad that we did. It offers incredible natural beauty that we enjoy whether we’re on the golf course or riding bikes up to the summit of McDowell Mountain.
Since I had always been incredibly busy with my corporate career, it never occurred to me to get involved with the community. Realizing I had all this retired time on my hands, I started to think about ways to give back and leverage my educational and business background. I saw the invitation looking for new board members and thought: why not me? It felt as though I could make some positive contributions. I have come to appreciate the sophistication, professionalism and complexity of governing a large community. Most of all, it’s been a great learning experience getting to know my fellow board members and hearing from residents. Through effective debate and collaboration amongst the governing councils, Neighborhood Voting Members and DC Ranch residents, I'm confident that we will continue to be Arizona’s premier residential community.
Sam Hawkins, Treasurer
As Treasurer, my priority for the Ranch Association is to have solid financial performance and continue policies and practices that support DC Ranch to be the premier residential community in Arizona. DC Ranch should continue evolving to meet the changing needs of the residents and the environment. I am very supportive of the Master Plan that the Community Council has recently published.
Shortly after moving to DC Ranch in 2011, I volunteered as NVM for my neighborhood, and continued as NVM until my election to the Ranch Association Board. I also served on the Modifications Committee for 8 years. I believe all homeowners in DC Ranch have an obligation to contribute in some way to the community. Serving as NVM or assistant NVM is an excellent way to get involved. I enjoy working collaboratively with other board members and believe the diverse experience represented by the Board members contributes significantly to the Ranch Association. Ranch Association Board membership is a lot of work, but also an opportunity to influence the programs and policies and success of the community.

H E A LT H Y L I V I N G By Mitra Mozoon | Nature’s Secret CBD
The FDA recently recommended the approval of Epidiolex, a drug derived from cannabis, to control seizures. Although many people have been legally using cannabis-derived products for medicinal purposes, this was a first in United States history. The recommendation solidifies the belief that CBD oil and cannabisderived products are beneficial. Unlike many pharmaceutical drugs, CBD is all natural without harmful side effects. CBD stands for cannabidiol which is a component of the cannabis plant that has significant therapeutic properties, but no mind altering or psychoactive effects. Customers call it “miracle in a bottle.”
Even though studies are still in progress, here are a list of frequently reported health benefits from CBD: • Natural pain reliever • Helps reduce stress and anxiety • Natural sleep aid
• Natural AntiInflammatory • Neuroprotective properties • Heart health & lower blood pressure • Anti-tumor effects • Anti-seizure properties • Natural Anti-Bacterial
The many pleasant terpenes found in full-spectrum CBD (and the cannabis plant) impart flavor and aroma and offer healing properties. These terpenes are widely represented elsewhere in nature through aromatic foods, spices, and tree resins, including broccoli, citrus fruits, mangoes, beer, basil, rosemary, cinnamon and oregano. Here’s a quick overview: • Alpha-pinene terpenes are said to help enhance focus and memory. They are
Benefits of CBD hidden in plain sight also thought to have bronchodilator, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. • Linalool is a sedative, antiepileptic and analgesic that also can help reduce anxiety. It is also found in lavender. • Myrcene is analgesic, muscle-relaxing and antibiotic. Also found in mangos. • Beta-caryophyllene, known as the “happy” terpene, reduces anxiety, lifts spirits, and acts as an antioxidant and antimicrobial. It’s also found in cloves.
• Limonene, as the name suggests, is also found naturally in lemon peel. It improves mood, reduces anxiety and depression, and boosts immunity. There are a variety of products created from CBD, from creams to gummies and even dog treats. CBD oil is one of the more popular ones made by extracting the cannabinoid from hemp plants and then mixing it with a carrier oil.
As a family-owned and operated business in Scottsdale, Nature’s Secret CBD provides a calming space to learn about CBD and help people feel their best. The premium quality products found here are USDA Organic Certified, US Hemp Authority Certified, made in the USA and third-party lab tested. For more information, visit CBDandOils.com or stop by the DC Ranch Crossing location for a free deluxe sample.

By City of Scottsdale
In November 2019, Scottsdale voters approved two bond questions, which included funding to replace aging infrastructure and create public and event spaces in the Civic Center area.
The updated, attractive and safe environment is expected to attract residents, visitors and events to the Civic Center and Old Town Scottsdale area. Among improvements, elevations will be lowered and re-graded throughout Civic Center to enhance accessibility and visibility. Restrooms will be remodeled and include family changing rooms. Several techniques throughout the project will save water and enhance water collection to existing trees. And from sculptural plantings to mosaic tile, each aspect of the redesign also incorporates influence from the arts.
Proposed improvements are based on community outreach and the Civic Center Municipal Use Master Plan the City Council approved in 2018.
Investing in Scottsdale: Civic Center rebuild A picturesque botanical garden, sculptural play elements and a new interactive water and fog plaza are just a handful of the new elements proposed for Scottsdale Civic Center’s enhancement.
Upon its completion, the updated public space will place Scottsdale in a competitive position to attract large-scale events, such as Super Bowl Live, a multi-day event leading up to Super Bowl 2023. For more information, visit ScottsdaleAZ.gov and search “Civic Center improvements.”
