Home prices in the Valley are as hot as our temperatures and experts say a significant cool down is not yet in sight. Data from the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller Indices show that the Phoenix metro has led the nation for almost two uninterrupted years posting the fastest-rising home prices, outpacing cities like San Diego and Seattle. Home sales and prices in DC Ranch are also robust. Sale prices for the first half of 2021 are up 182 percent over the first half of 2020 and the sales volume year-to-year for the same period is 82 percent higher. Open house activity remains slow as many homes sell virtually or sight unseen with multiple offers at or above the list price.
Keeping the community safe
The Rally for the Valley Led by the Phoenix Suns making it to the NBA finals, the Phoenix metro gained additional national recognition when it landed in the Top 10 on the 2021 America’s Best Cities Report published by Resonance Consultancy. That’s the highest ranking ever received, moving to #9 up from #13 in 2020. The Valley received high marks for its weather, shopping, diversity, safety and change in the civilian labor force—a new measurement that tracks migration from and to cities—a factor contributing to the rising residential home sale and rental costs.
Scottsdale Police Foothills District will present the final program of its five-part, year-long safety forum hosted by DC Ranch. "Surviving Critical Incidents" is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 13 from 5 to 6:30 p.m. via Zoom. Crime Prevention Officer Rob Katzaroff will present material from FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency, on how to survive a disaster or life-threatening situation until professional help arrives. To register for this free event, visit DCRanch.com/ safety-series or scan the QR code with your phone’s camera. The program is open to all residents in the Scottsdale Foothills District to help encourage collaboration on crime prevention. DC Ranch plans to continue its partnership with Scottsdale PD next year to present additional safety and crime prevention topics. If there is a subject matter that you would like covered, email Community Safety@dcranchinc.com.
Modifications higher than 2020
Residents continue to show pride in the community through exterior modifications to update their property by adding new amenities, changing the paint color or architectural style. From January to June 2021, modification and variance requests are up by 70 percent over the prior year. Paint modifications specifically rose by 41 percent year-to-year for the first six months.

Search underway for new executive I regret to inform you that Darren Shaw, who has served as the executive director of the DC Ranch Association since 2017, will be leaving the community on Sept. 24. Shaw will be relocating to California, where he will be the general manager with San Diego Country Estates and San Vicente Resort.
Darren Shaw
Shaw’s leadership and outstanding contributions have continued DC Ranch's legacy of being a premier place to live. The residents he served, past and present board members, and the DC Ranch team will miss him. Please join me in wishing Shaw all the best in his new position.
The Ranch Association Board of Directors has already begun the search for Shaw's replacement. With Shaw's help, the DC Ranch team, and an executive search committee, we are optimistic that a new executive director will be in place by Sept. 1. The Board will take the necessary time to find the correct caliber of talent and passion for our community. If the new executive director is not in place by the time of Shaw's departure, Brad Bishop, who is currently the director of maintenance services, will fill in as interim executive director. —Geoff Wilner, Ranch Association Board President

Ingredients • 2 Lbs. yellow potatoes, skin on, medium dice • 2 Tbs. sea salt, for boiling potatoes • 1 cup mayonnaise, more as desired • 3 Tbs. Maille old world style mustard • 1 tsp. sea salt for potato salad, add more if needed • 1 tsp. cracked black pepper • 5 Tbs. fresh dill, chopped • 2 Tbs. poppy seeds • 1 large shallot, chopped • 6 whole green onions, sliced diagonally • 2 Tbs. mustard seed
Dill Potato Salad
Method
1. Put the potatoes and salt
in a large pot filled with water 2 inches above the potatoes. 2. Bring the water to a boil and cook for 15 minutes, or until fork tender. Don’t let potatoes collapse. 3. Drain the potatoes and space them out on a baking sheet to dry for 1/2 hour.
Elevate your next picnic with this quick and easy crowd-pleasing dish.

FOR
$730,000
4. In a separate large bowl
mix remaining sauce ingredients. 5. Put 1/2 of the potatoes into the sauce bowl and fold the potatoes into the sauce from the bottom up. 6. Decide at this point how saucy you want your salad. Add more potatoes as desired. 7. Place potato salad in the refrigerator to allow flavors to meld. Then serve and enjoy!
Cooking Tips
1. Start potatoes off in cold
water. Dropping them into a pot of boiling water causes uneven cooking and the outside will be mushy. 2. Salt the cooking water. Salt is the initial flavor. Adding it later won’t work. 3. Let potatoes cool and dry. Hot potatoes will make the salad oily and wet potatoes will make the salad runny.
4. I recommend doubling
the dressing.
5. Cut potatoes equal size
to allow even cooking.
6. Cooking time will depend
on the size of each potato. Don't overcook. 7. For an added treat, add hard-boiled eggs to the salad. Instead of chopping, tear them into large chunks. 8. Salt is key to any salad. When your taste buds pop, then you know you are well seasoned.

NEWSWORTHY SCOTTSDALE 9/11 MEMORIAL TRIBUTE MARKS 20TH ANNIVERSARY By City of Scottsdale
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the attacks that took the lives of nearly 3,000 people in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. In recognition, the City of Scottsdale is hosting a free 9/11 Memorial Tribute, Sept. 3-12, at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. The center is open Tuesday-Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday beginning at Noon for the ceremony.
The tribute includes a mini-museum in the center’s atrium. The exhibition features the three-story National Unity Flag, photos and video from 9/11, and supersized props of the Twin Towers, Pentagon, plane wing and large metal flag—made of steel, brass and polycarbonate. These specially-built models will display a memorial card of every individual who lost their life on Sept. 11 in the attacks. The memorial cards were created and donated by Scottsdale resident Lisa Vella. This year, the display will also feature memorial wreaths from City of Scottsdale departments, as well as other service organizations and groups. The intent of the wreaths is to honor the memory of the event as well as recognize the importance that the day is also known as a Day of Service.
“This week-long tribute is a chance for all of us to remember and reflect on the impact this event had on our community,” said Fire Chief Tom Shannon. “Out of the sorrow of 9/11 came a commitment to give back. At this year’s 9/11 tribute, we encourage individuals to pledge to help a person, our community or our nation through an act of kindness or service.”
There will be a special ceremony on Sept. 11. The reading of the names of those who lost their lives will begin at 1 p.m. in the atrium. The 9/11 Remembrance ceremony begins at 3 p.m. in the adjacent Virginia G. Piper Theater. Additional events will be announced as Sept. 11 approaches.

Scottsdale recently celebrated its 70th anniversary of incorporation. In a nod to “The West’s Most Western Town” and the DC Ranch legacy, a visit to nearby Arizona Cowboy College is in order. Just like in the comedy hit City Slickers, people come here from all over the world wearing jeans and boots for a taste of the cowboy life. Located off a dirt road on the border of Rio Verde, this family-operated ranch has been featured on programs like The Today Show, 60 Minutes and Good Morning America; it was also the destination for the opening coverage of the Super Bowl in 2008.
The cowboy life
A dream of the late Lloyd Bridwell, a fourthgeneration cowboy, and his wife, Lori, they ran the Cowboy College's first session in 1989. A variety of horses, including Arabians, Quarter Horses, minis and Mustangs, call the ranch home along with numerous cows. Those who come for the one- to five-day Cowboy College experience stay in a bunkhouse on the property. Lori, who also Lori Bridwell hits the trail with other lives on the property, family members. prepares all of the guest (Inset) Poster for the meals herself. 1959 Parada del Sol.

E.O. Brown, one of Scottsdale’s most prominent businessmen, began investing in land north of the community in 1916, establishing a cattle ranch that eventually covered 43,000 acres. DC Ranch continued to operate—complete with cowboys and cattle drives—through the 1950’s. Twice a year, young men volunteered for the twoday journey to the stockyards near Sky Harbor airport.

Scottsdale has a long history of horses in its public art. The first commissioned piece was by Marjorie Thomas in 1910. Chaplain Winfield Scott invited the artist to paint a portrait of his beloved retired Army mule, Old Maude. Throughout her life in Scottsdale, Thomas painted many

One of the oldest continually operating businesses in Scottsdale is Cavalliere Blacksmith Shop, located at Brown and 2nd street. It opened in 1909 to service horses, but by the 1940’s transitioned to ornamental iron work.

What is taught in Cowboy College ranges depending on the participants and what they want to learn, the time of year it is and ranch needs. Everyone from complete novices to experienced riders attends, so the curriculum is also tailored to each participant’s level. There are typically rider and equine safety lessons, equitation, roping, penning, sorting and more. As a working ranch, the participants also help with tasks needed at the time— whether that’s doing fence checks, cattle drives, counting cattle, horseshoeing and more. If a participant has something specific they want to learn, that happens, as well. With a passion for putting people on horseback, staff will get someone who has never ridden before to start riding like the wind. Lori says, “The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a person. People realize that if they can do this, they can do anything!” Arizona Cowboy College offers private and group lessons for kids to adults and its unique cowboy school program. Chiropractic care on Market Street By Dr. Todd Curzie | Curzie Chiropractic
Although Curzie Chiropractic is new to the DC Ranch community, I have had the privilege of practicing in Anchorage, Alaska for over 26 years. Licensed in both states, I have been able to serve existing patients who also travel back and forth to Alaska. While establishing roots in Arizona, I began serving young baseball players, flag football players, ballet dancers, their parents and many more. It became clear that it was time to open a real clinic.
Dr. Todd Curzie
Market Street was the perfect place to build our satellite clinic equipped with state-of-the-art digital X-ray. During this process, we connected with Dr. Nicolette Leone who was in the process of moving from New Jersey. Her 10 years of experience, combined with skills in playing professional hockey and golf, made her a perfect fit for the new facility, allowing us to serve patients on a more regular basis.
Who can benefit from chiropractic care?
Chiropractic care benefits the entire family by making sure the nervous system is functioning at its optimum potential. It is not just about back pain, neck pain or headaches, as is the common misconception. By realigning the vertebrae of the spine, chiropractic adjustments remove nerve interference often responsible for diminished health. Over the years, we have helped thousands of patients with every sign or symptom you can imagine; loss of mobility, colicky babies, asthmatic symptoms, stomach troubles, blurry vision and hand tingling, to name just a few.

A critical component to making DC Ranch a vibrant and dynamic community is a population that is informed, engaged, inspired and connected. The recent launch of a new mobile phone text messaging platform is the latest initiative for fulfilling that specific mission. Text messages from DC Ranch provide timely community information to residents. To receive text messages from DC Ranch, all residents need to do is complete a simple form at DCRanch.com/text. There they will be asked to provide some basic information and select which topics are of interest: • Emergency • Neighborhood Alerts (road work, broken gates, incident report) • Events and Programs • Community Meetings Emergency
In the unlikely event of a natural disaster or other major incident, the DC Ranch team will send a text message as soon as possible. This new text messaging system will make the former “Emergency Notification System” obsolete, so residents who enrolled in the “Emergency Notification System” will need to register to receive text messages (including emergency texts) from the new system.
Events and Programs DC Ranch
offers various activities to serve many different interests and ages. These text messages help let residents know about various gatherings. In addition to reminding residents about upcoming events, these messages can let residents know when space opens for a previously full event. Community Meetings
These messages are ideal for informing residents about upcoming board meetings and other important sessions where staff and resident leaders discuss matters that impact the community.
Text messaging from DC Ranch keeps residents informed
Neighborhood Alerts These messages will let residents know about road work and other maintenance planned in their area. Additionally, text messages in this category will allow the DC Ranch team to quickly inform residents about things like unplanned closures of amenities, broken gates, criminal activity and other occurrences that may impact regular day-to-day life.

On June 1, Hugh Illsley went the extra mile for others—hiking the 24-mile Grand Canyon rim-to-rim in one day to raise upwards of $25,000 for Maasai Girls Rescue Center, a nonprofit that cares for vulnerable girls in Tanzania, Africa.
Lin’s interest in Miss Arizona grew from observing a close family friend. She explains, “I was inspired by all of the wonderful things she was doing in pageants. Outside of the dresses and traditional sparkle, there is a focus on inner beauty and giving back.”
The Miss Arizona’s Outstanding Teen Scholarship Program encourages positive achievement by building and nurturing scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living and community involvement. Founded in 2005, Miss America’s Outstanding Teen has become one of the top scholarship providers for teen girls in the United States. Participants on the local, state and national levels have received valuable scholarship assistance upon high school graduation. In just a few short years, approximately $4 million in cash and in-kind scholarships have been awarded. The four-day competition held June 9-13 included an 8-minute private panel interview, a social impact initiative, talent show, lifestyle and wellness, evening wear and onstage questions. Lin’s social impact initiative, "heARTening those in need,” uses art to inspire, impact and empower others through volunteering. “My mom is my biggest cheerleader, and I’m so appreciative. My whole family was there every night of the competition,” Lin says. As to her future, the freshman at BASIS stays busy with dance, drawing and community service. She looks forward to strengthening her interview skills and competing again for a new title next year.

Illsley completed the epic charitable journey in 10 ½ hours, marking the culmination of a bucket-list dream hatched when he turned 70: to combine his first major hike with his wish to support the work of friend Rick Morro, who founded and runs the life-saving rescue center. Over the last decade, Morro has developed his own Maasai Girls Rescue Center (MGRC). More than 50 girls currently live at a temporary site in Karatu, Tanzania, while a permanent ecoVillage is under construction a mile away. Funds are being raised to build the ecoVillage, which will provide shelter for the girls and a farm and small lodge for safari and adventure travelers visiting nearby World Heritage sites. Revenue from the tourists will sustain the center’s operations.
Like Morro, Illsley approached his Grand Canyon challenge a step at a time, beginning two years ago with a demanding training program hiking in the desert four to five hours three days a week. “This has been the toughest goal I’ve ever set. It was a very satisfying thing to do.” Illsley said. To learn more about MGRC, visit maasairescue.org.

H E A LT H Y L I V I N G The benefit of plants inside your home extends well beyond good looks —they make you feel good, too! It has been scientifically proven that greenery improves mood, increases creativity, reduces stress and eliminates air pollutants.
Indoor plants can absorb toxic substances in the air and reduce dust by up to 20%. They also release water vapor which can help improve respiratory and skin health by offsetting dry environments. To maximize these benefits, experts recommend placing plants within 6 to 8 square feet of where you normally sit or sleep. NASA has done extensive studies on the role of houseplants in cleansing the air, hoping to capitalize on these benefits for future space stations. Their studies have shown that certain houseplants are exceptionally good. Ready to start reaping the benefits? Give one or two of these plants a try in your home.
Green with envy: The benefits of houseplants
Plant care tips It’s better to underwater than overwater. Check the top layer
of plant soil and if it’s still moist, you can wait a little longer before watering. Leaves that look limp are a tell-tale sign that your plant is thirsty.
Different houseplants require

different types of light.
Here are some of the top recommendations that are easy to find and care for: • English ivy Hedera helix
• Aloe vera
Aloe barbadensis
• Spider plant Chlorophytum comosum
• Golden pothos Epipiremnum aureum
• Chinese evergreen Aglaonema modestum
• Peace lily
Spathiphyllum `Mauna Loa'
• Bamboo or reed palm Chamaedorea sefritzii
• Snake plant Sansevieria trifasciata
• Heartleaf philodendron
Philodendron scandens `oxycardium'
• Lacy tree philodendron Philodendron selloum
• Elephant ear philodendron Philodendron domesticum
• Red-edged dracaena Dracaena marginata
• Weeping fig Ficus benjamina
In Arizona, indirect or filtered light seems preferable to most plants. If a plant doesn’t thrive in one area, move it around to find where it does best.
Get pruning. Remove any leaves
that are brown or spotted. If cutting back growth, the trimmings can be propagated in water and replanted once roots form. Give plants a spa day. Every
month or so, wipe their leaves with a soft cloth or bring them to the tub for a gentle shower.

By Rebecca Zandarski | McDowell Sonoran Conservancy
We’ve hit a major milestone. To commemorate 30 years of service at the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy (MSC), we’re highlighting our organization’s greatest accomplishments and treasured memories, charting our decades-long journey to emerge as a conservation leader in Arizona and beyond. One of the unique aspects of MSC is its impact on many of the people who have chosen to devote their time and talents to its development and growth.
Celebrating 30 years of science, education & stewardship
In the early 1990’s, development in Scottsdale was accelerating and extending eastward toward the McDowell’s. Several residents became interested in how development might impact the mountain range regarded as a signature feature of the City. From its formation in 1991 until mid-1993, the McDowell Sonoran Land Trust members had been occupied primarily with defining a vision for preserving the McDowell Mountains.
With a small paid staff, the structure of the volunteer organization was critical to the Conservancy. Many non-profits rely on volunteers to solely execute staff instructions, but the Conservancy has developed into an organization where the volunteers, known as stewards, are directly responsible for many aspects.
The scope of the steward involvement in the Conservancy's work stems from an acknowledgment that volunteers as a group have significant skills and capabilities and, when given the opportunity, can organize and direct themselves to great effect.
With this approach, stewards volunteer in programs according to their interests. Today the Conservancy has nine programs, including Citizen Science, Construction & Maintenance, Education, Guided Hike and Bike, Nature Guides, Pathfinders, Pastfinders, Patrol, and Steward Experience, with many stewards working within multiple programs.
All non-profit organizations benefit from the work and support of their volunteers and patrons, but very few organizations have such a profound impact on the lives of their volunteers. This unique reciprocal relationship is one of the features of the Conservancy and a large part of the stories of its most dedicated stewards.
The MSC preserves and advances natural open space through science, education and stewardship. The Conservancy protects more than 30,500 acres in Scottsdale’s McDowell Sonoran Preserve, the largest urban preserve in the country, with over 750,000 visitors yearly. More than 650 Stewards volunteer their time and energy to protect and enhance the Preserve and educate visitors to benefit this and future generations. To learn more, visit mcdowellsonoran.org.
