Simply doing nothing in retirement is exhausting Your Turn Tom Speropulos Guest columnist

Retirement. The word itself conjures up wonderful visions of being on vacation all the time, playing paddleball with well-toned men and women, and taking trips to watch the bulls of Pamplona run down drunken college students on spring break. The problem is, I am a lazy slug. Ever since retiring, I’ve been motivated to do nothing all day. I’ve been told that when folks retire, they need to have a hobby to keep them active. That’s all well and good, but in my view, getting out of bed before noon qualifi es as active. I never had any hobbies during my working career, unless one counts making it through the work-

day and surviving the commute home a hobby. Now, binge-watching reruns of “Wheel of Fortune” is the closest I come to having a real hobby. Pat, I’d like to buy a vowel: an “E.” While my wife runs off to her volunteer work caring for hospice patients, I stay home debating whether to Google for the Naughty Women of East Germany or fi x our leaky toilet. Oh sure, I did do the dishes today — well, I turned the knob to start the dishwasher. Laundry, the same thing: turn the knob, dump in the soap, start. I never sort the clothes. Whites, colors, whatever, all go in one load. I’ve overloaded our washer so many times that the spin cycle serves as a carnival death-ride for long-forgotten socks trapped in drier limbo. After I put the wash in the drier, I set

the heat on high in hopes that everything will shrink down to the size of a postage stamp so I won’t ever have to wash them again. Stalling to avoid doing anything too productive, I stop and listen to the hum of the bedsheets in the drier tying themselves into a tangled ball as they fi ght for space. I regularly avoid folding the fi tted bedsheets, since it requires a degree in engineering and a detailed knowledge of the art of origami to pull off . Staring out the window, I look to see if any of my neighbors are doing anything out of the ordinary or illegal for me to watch. Hmmm? Bob is wearing shorts and mowing his lawn in the middle of a workday. That’s suspicious — he never wears shorts. Idling about, I begin looking at the books in my offi ce. I read a bit here and there. I have a moment of inspiration. I stop to eat a banana. Potassium is good

for the heart, I rationalize. Not that I have done anything to wear it out today, but better safe than sorry. Done with my snack, I check my email and Facebook page for the hundredth time today. No one writes or posts to me. I am invisible to the world. Why do I have all of these friends if they aren’t going to respond to my latest animals-are-so-funny-you-could-dielaughing video. Ingrates, all of them. Ha! A look-a-chicken moment happens when I spot one of our neighborhood’s feral cats wandering through our backyard. I race outside, fl ailing my arms at it to chase it off before it has time to crap in my garden. Satisfi ed I’ve done too much work for one day, I decide to take a nap. Tomorrow, I’ll do more. Really! Tom Speropulos was born in Phoenix. He is a photographer and worked for the city of Chandler. He lives in northeast Mesa. Reach him at sperot@cox.net.

A northern California nurse and three people from Chandler were indicted on charges of selling opioids, heroin and methamphetamine over the Darknet, federal prosecutors said April 5. The indictments were the result of a federal operation targeting drug traffi cking on the Darknet that has netted 14 arrests, large seizures of narcotics, nearly $424,000 in cash and $2 million in digital currency, the U.S. Attorney’s Offi ce in Sacramento said. The defendants were charged in two separate cases of peddling narcotics through Darknet websites that are accessible only through encrypted means and off er the sale of illegal goods and services. “The Darknet has become a one-stop shop for individuals peddling powerful opioids, like fentanyl, because of the anonymity it seemingly off ers to those who seek to evade detection,” said Chris Nielsen, Drug Enforcement Administration special agent in charge. Prosecutors said Carrie Alaine Markis ran an illegal online pharmacy out of her Rancho Cordova home by reselling

fentanyl patches and about 11,000 hydrocodone and oxycodone pills from people who received prescriptions for them. Investigators who searched her home in January found about $1.8 million in bitcoin in her cryptocurrency wallet and $234,000 in cash, according to the documents. Prosecutors said three people in Chandler were also indicted on charges of selling heroin and methamphetamine through a business they operated on the Darknet. They were identifi ed as Jason Keith Arnold, the owner of a tattoo parlor in Chandler; David Lee White and Alicia Marie McCoy. Federal agents who made undercover purchases of heroin from their business last year received the drug inside gummy bear packages, authorities said. They determined White and McCoy mailed a large volume of parcels at post offi ces in the Chandler area and were exchanging hundreds of thousands of dollars in bitcoins for U.S. currency at a cryptocurrency exchange company, according to the documents. A message to Arnold at his business was not immediately returned.

In September 1988, my wife, Jo, and I were blessed to adopt our fi rst son, Jacob. From the moment we laid eyes on him and held him in our arms, he was our precious son. He was the fi rst baby we held as parents and the love of our life. Jake suff ered in the fi rst months of his life because his birth mother had used drugs during her pregnancy. Our little man was suff ering from withdrawals, but people did not know the real eff ects on a child, what it looked like or how to truly treat it. Doctors told us that as long as Jake met his developmental milestones, he would be fi ne. This was not the case. Our son struggled with substance abuse, bipolar disorder and depression for much of his life. Jo and I hurt for our son and wanted to do so much more for him. Life for our family changed forever on Sept. 7, 2014. Our son Jake had allowed a man to come with him for a few days. This man brought drugs into Jake’s home and they were poisoned. The battle with drugs that Jake fought so hard in his life had caused his death. Time went on and the sorrow over Jake’s death was insurmountable. In the winter of 2015, my wife was given a book written by Barbara Drennen of the Pediatric Infant Care Center in Kent, Washington. This center has been open since 1990, treating infants exposed to prenatal substance exposure. Jo and her best friend traveled to Washington to visit PICC. Jo had served on the Foster Care Review Board for 16 years and saw thousands of babies in need of such help. With this in mind, the vision was conceived for a center here in Arizona where substance-exposed infants could be cared for in a nurturing, medical environment. Jacob’s Hope was born. Jacob’s Hope is an interim care center that will provide a nursery designed to meet the medical concerns of substance-exposed newborns and those

specifi cally suff ering from Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome. Our facility is a 501(c)(3) incorporated non-profi t organization. We provide immediate short-term medical care between hospital and home for medically fragile newborns suff ering from prenatal drug exposure. Our plan is to partner with state agencies like DHS and DCS to provide care for the infants and then training for parents and foster placements. The goal is to provide the greatest level of treatment for these infants and to work in partnership with state and local hospitals at a signifi cant savings to the state. The journey to create Jacob’s Hope has been a faith-based endeavor to open the fi rst of its kind residential nursery in Arizona where we care for infants who are suff ering with NAS. We have a fully remodeled building, are an AzDHS licensed facility and are now an AHCCCS provider. All of this has been achieved with private donations. There has not been a single paid staff member on our team. This has truly been a labor of love. It is our belief that the problems of prenatal drug exposure can best be solved by individuals and organizations who want to make a diff erence. This motivation has led us to create Jacob’s Hope and to do all of the necessary work to open our facility Details: www.jacobshopeaz.org. A joint cancer screening program for Valley police and fi refi ghters that began in November has detected two cases of prostate cancer, two cases of skin cancer and a thymus tumor, but all were caught early enough to successfully treat, offi cials said at an April 4 news conference. The partnership with Vincere Cancer Center of Scottsdale, which was spearheaded by Phoenix Councilwoman Laura Pastor, so far has screened 132 fi refi ghters and 32 police offi cers free of charge, according to Dr. Vershalee Shukla, a radiation oncologist at Vincere. The screenings may have saved the life of Jason Underwood of the Chandler Fire Department. “They found a tumor right in the center of my chest,” Underwood said at the news conference. “I didn’t have any symptoms … I just wanted to get checked out and, fortunately, being able to have that access helped us fi nd it early. … I personally think this is an awesome outcome.” Lung screenings had the highest number of detections, with 41 nodules found. Underwood was lucky to have been allowed to undergo a low-dose computed tomography scan for lungs. “Low-dose lung CT wasn’t even approved for lung cancer” until recently, Shukla said. “In 2014, it got approved in smokers who are at least 55 years or older, but because there’s so many young fi rst responders in this state and other states (that) are getting lung cancer, we opened it up and started screenings for fi rst responders at the age of 40.” That allowed Shulka to fi nd Underwood’s tumor and treat him without chemotherapy or other harsh procedures. Your Turn

Katherine Palmer Guest columnist

The benefi ts and power of musicmaking are vast across generations. Research shows that babies begin to hear while in utero and that musical sounds help enhance their cognitive and language development. In dementia patients, music has the ability to help boost brain activity and recall functions. Recreational music making (i.e. making music for fun with others) boosts “feel good” hormones while decreasing stressful cortisol levels. Regardless of our age, music is good for us. So, how can we take full advantage of music’s benefi ts in our daily lives, and how can we foster a love of music in the next generation? It’s time to give up the myth that if you do not self-identify as a “musician,” then you simply aren’t musical. This is an idea that is perpetuated by American culture and largely centers around music-learning in classrooms, which prioritizes music performance over music participation. Although most of us won’t be taking the stage at Lincoln Center anytime soon, all of us can sing and make music with others. The Valley is rich with music-making opportunities, from drum circles to choirs, and most welcome newcomers. If you aren’t comfortable putting yourself “out there” quite yet, take advantage of making music independently by singing loud and proud. You don’t have to be a “musician” to make music!

Make music intergenerational Early childhood music and movement courses, like Mini Music Makers at the Musical Instrument Museum, encourage children and caregivers to explore music-making together. Although some caregivers are reluctant to sing along or at home, it’s important to note that young children do not demonstrate musical preference in vocal qualities until they are much older (i.e., they don’t know we can’t sing yet). With this in mind, taking classes and

participating in musical experiences together across generations is a wonderful way to foster musicianship in everyone’s lives. Additionally, informal music classes aid in developmental growth for young children and promote social and emotional wellbeing, language acquisition, and fi ne and gross motor skills.

Make music fun Many adults took some form of music lessons when they were younger, and most quit because they weren’t enjoying the process of learning. When looking for opportunities to make or explore music, pick something enjoyable for everyone. Incorporating music into your daily life can be as simple as creating a soundtrack to share or visiting musical places together. The Musical Instrument Museum offers a plethora of family-friendly musical activities for all ages. Signature Events take place 15 times per year and feature live music, crafts and lectures about musical cultures from around the world. Admission to these special events is included with museum admission. With the diversity of off erings, there’s something for everyone. MIMkids educational programming provides an opportunity for kids, ages birth through 18, to explore the world of music through guided instruction. With an emphasis on developmentally appropriate practice and making music fun, these classes foster musical and academic skills in participants. Visit MIM’s Experience Gallery to play unique musical instruments like a theremin, Indonesian gamelan set and taiko drum. No lessons are needed to try your hand at strumming a harp or plucking a banjo. The Experience Gallery allows every guest to create their own personalized musical adventure. Creating a more musical life — at any age — is good for us. Be sure to take advantage of the musical events already taking place in Phoenix. You don’t have to be a “musician” to enjoy, appreciate and benefi t from music! Katherine Palmer, DMA, is the curator of education at the Musical Instrument Museum,4725 E Mayo Blvd. Phoenix.

Arizona icon part of a compelling story of friendship, achievement Your Turn Dana Resnick Guest columnist

There are many times when art imitates life. For me, a play like “Sisters in Law,” making its world premiere this month at the Phoenix Theatre Company, is the perfect example of this sentiment. Today’s audience is hungry for stories about strong women who are making a diff erence in the world and persevering against all odds. Who better to tell that story than Arizona’s own Sandra Day O’Connor and feminist icon Ruth Bader Ginsburg? Twenty-fi ve years ago, a play like “Sisters in Law” would not have been created. The performing arts had a history of placing women in supporting character roles, usually backing their man or trying to “win” the attention of someone of the opposite sex. This story breaks that form and features two living legends who are intelligent, confi dent women at the pinnacle of their careers. As a director, when I start a new project, I always ask the question, “What does the world — specifi cally our audience — want to see?” Right now, the answer is powerful women on the stage. We want to leave the theater feeling inspired and charged with energy. Thanks to “Sisters in Law” playwright Jonathan Shapiro, we can peek into the chambers of the most powerful court in the world and witness the true-to-life experiences of two modern-day heroines who off er exactly that. As the fi rst two women on the Supreme Court, Justices O’Connor and Ginsburg are role models. These groundbreakers demonstrated the value of women supporting women instead of competing with one another. The play exposes us to the idea that even in a male-dominated profession, O’Connor and Ginsburg worked together despite political diff erences. Even when they disagreed, they pushed the feminist agenda forward and ultimately facilitated change at the national level.

CLEAN AS NEW. The COIT Commitment to You.

Former Supreme Court Associate Justice Sandra Day O'Connor answers questions during an interview at her house in Paradise Valley in 2009. MICHAEL MCNAMARA/THE REPUBLIC

I was an RBG fan before I started working on this play. I knew little about Justice O’Connor, beyond her legacy as the fi rst woman on the high court. After spending nearly a year working with the script, I’ve developed a deep respect for both women. Both persevered despite unbelievable obstacles, both wanted to do the best they could for the country, and both managed to take care of their loved ones. As a working mother of two young children, I am inspired by their fortitude. I like to think that because of them, I was able to travel with my children from Los Angeles to Phoenix to direct this production, with the Phoenix Theatre Company even providing additional housing to accommodate us. I hope people of all genders and ages come to see this play. Bring your daughter and your grandmother to see “Sisters in Law.” Bring your co-workers, your spouse and your boss to share this inspirational experience. There is no better way to get a glimpse into a world that is shrouded in mystery and decorum but fi lled with humor and humanity. Dana Resnick is the director of “Sisters in Law” at the Phoenix Theatre Company, 1825 N. Central Ave. “Sisters in Law” is part of the theater’s 99th season and is running through April 28. In addition to directing this world premiere play, Resnick is a professor of theater arts at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.

Man shot during argument outside Tempe apartment Dylan McKim

Arizona Republic USA TODAY NETWORK

A man was shot multiple times during an argument in the hallway of an apartment building late Monday night in Tempe. Tempe police found a man with two to three gunshot wounds at an apartment in the 1000 block of East Orange Drive, police Sgt. Ronald Elcock said in an email. The man, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to a hos-

pital in critical but stable condition, Elcock said. An investigation reported that an argument had taken place between the man and the shooter in the hallway outside an apartment. During the argument, the man swung at the shooter, who pulled out a gun and shot the man, Elcock said. The shooter left the scene. Police have not been provided with an accurate description, as impairment may be a factor for the man and another witness involved, Elcock stated.

into one residence. In her building, it’s common to buy more than one unit and to live in the building part-time. Krebs visits from Connecticut every other month. Her home has three bedrooms and 31⁄ 2 bathrooms. Each bedroom is a full suite with a walk-in closet, with the master suite being the largest. Krebs moved in last July and is thrilled with her new residence, particularly the views. “The view is gorgeous all day,” she said. “I see it right when I walk in my front door. There are ceiling-to-fl oor windows in my living room. Then you go to the roof and see the 360-degree views and say, ‘Oh my God, this is beautiful. It’s absolutely awesome up there.” Krebs has been living in Arizona part time the last 13 years. This is her fourth home in the area. She once had an 8,000-square-foot house in the Phoenix See COOL HOME , Page 23

area, thinking that people would visit more often than they did. She said the property management company spent more time at the house than she did. She loves having a home in Arizona but wanted a “lock and leave” lifestyle of a condo. “It’s in a safe, secure building and I don’t have to worry about anything you’d worry about in a private home,” she said. “ With houses, I’ve been there and done that many times in my life. I was spending all my money on maintenance and on the pool, and it was always, this isn’t working, this is broken, that’s broken. This is my free time when I’m here. I can do whatever I want and don’t have to worry about the lawn and repairs and maintenance. I don’t even have to worry about packages here. Everything is safe for me while I’m gone.” She also likes the amenities, such as a gym, sauna, steam room, golf simula-

tor, business center, conference room and movie theater. The building also features a public area on the roof with a bar, pool, hot tub and fi re pits. Krebs and her husband, Grant Ulrick, have fi ve adult children. Krebs owns a medical-product manufacturing company started by her late husband. Even though many of her neighbors are parttimers like her, there’s a sense of community, such as buildingwide potlucks. “Everyone has been very nice,” she said. “We’ve met many friendly people.” She calls her condo “perfect” but it’s not necessarily her last home. Donna is open to other opportunities down the line, but will she own another freestanding house? Absolutely not. “I like projects,” she said. “But I would not go back to a house, I can guarantee that.”

This is the case whether they are found or created, regardless of genre--be it landscape, still life, portraiture, nature, abstraction, photojournalism, self-portrait, or documentary. As photographers we strive to convey our vision in a true, honest, and consistent manner, establishing an emotional connection with each image we create.
