Justin Dees Joins Paul Kaplan Group with Bennion Deville Homes

B

ennion Deville Homes proudly welcomes REALTOR® Justin Dees to the Paul Kaplan Group Palm Springs, located at 201 North Palm Canyon Drive, Suite 120, in the heart of the Downtown Palm Springs village. Justin helps his clients purchase, sell, and invest in properties across the Coachella Valley, specializing in Palm Springs where he is a resident.

Prior to entering the real estate industry, Justin enjoyed a 20-year career in the medical field working in radiology. Over the course of his tenure as an MRI technologist he polished many critical skills that key his success in real estate. He can talk to and quickly connect with others and is very detail-oriented and organized. “You can say that I know no strangers,” Justin chuckles. “I wanted to continue to help others beyond my medical career and have always loved real estate, so making that career shift was a logical step for me. I am confident in my ability to help my real estate clients succeed because I care about the results I can get for them.” The motivation for Justin to earn his real estate sales license goes deeper than a desire to help others. As with many people, he felt the effects of the 2000s real estate market crash personally. “I bought my first home in 2008 at the height of the market. It was a horrible experience personally which created some anxiety for me. However, having been through that dark time and now on the other side, I want to use my personal experience and story to help others through the process. I understand how stressful buying and selling a home can be, and I also know how to talk to my clients about what to expect so they have a smooth, positive outcome,” Justin continues. Justin genuinely enjoys the real estate industry and is constantly expanding his knowledge and skillset. He has experience investing in real estate and shares his insight with clients looking to identify and acquire properties that suit their investment goals. “I have always been interested in seeing someone’s property and how they’ve improved it. Everyone has a story so getting to know the homeowner, their home, and how those two are connected has always been intriguing to me. The key to my success is

to keep learning as much as possible and growing so I can be the best professional for my clients.” Upon a visit to Palm Springs, Justin fell in love the area and decided that the desert is the right place for him to call home. “Palm Springs has an unrivaled lifestyle and offers the best of all worlds. The people and culture are fantastic, with a community-oriented approach and a slower, tranquil pace of life. I lived and worked in large cities for most of my life, so Palm Springs is the perfect place for me to lay down roots. Plus, if I ever want to go to L.A. or anywhere else in Southern California, it’s a 2-hour drive to escape for a day or a long weekend. I feel grounded here and enjoy sharing that perspective with clients who are looking to make a similar change or want the option to come here as a part-time resident,” Justin adds. Outside of his love of homes and helping others, Justin is an avid yoga practitioner and enjoys traveling. Thanks to a prominent social media presence and passion for the practice, he has been able to combine both. “My yoga journey began with a 30-day yoga challenge in 2010. Twelve years later I am still practicing yoga multiple times a week and love it. I have met so many cool people, traveled all over the world, and seen so many amazing things because of yoga,” he adds. Justin joined The Paul Kaplan Group Palm Springs with Bennion Deville Homes after speaking with some close friends who are also part of the team. “When I bought my home in Palm Springs, I worked with two Paul Kaplan Group agents. We remained friends and they encouraged me to earn my real estate license. They had only positive things to say about Paul Kaplan Group, Bennion Deville Homes, and their experiences here. I trust their opinions and judgement so decided that I would join them at the Paul Kaplan Group,” Justin concludes. About Bennion Deville Homes Founded in Palm Springs in 2001, Bennion Deville Homes is the #1 real estate brokerage in the Coachella Valley. Martin Kove stands at the front door of his home near Nashville July 7. NICOLE HESTER/THE TENNESSEAN

Actor Martin Kove left life in LA for a ranch house outside Nashville Melonee Hurt Nashville Tennessean USA TODAY NETWORK – TENNESSEE

Gazing up at the home’s massive wooden front doors after a gentle knock, it’s hard to not be slightly intimidated knowing who is about to answer the door. Thankfully, it wasn’t sensei Kreese

who greeted us, but Martin Kove, the actor behind the legendary character from the “Karate Kid” series of movies and more recently “Cobra Kai.” Replacing Kreese’s trademark black karate gi, commanding stance and glaring snarl is Kove’s more casual Western shirt, jeans and sneakers topped off with a warm smile and a friendly handshake.

During the final episode of 2018’s inaugural season of the runaway hit Netflix series, lurking in the shadows of the Cobra Kai dojo, Kove brought Kreese’s character back to life with one line and a cigar. “They thought we were done,” he says in his legendary Kreese growl. “But now they see (puffs his trademark cigar and slowly exhales a cloud of smoke)

that the real story – has only just begun.” That line would set the scene for the next three seasons of the popular action series that would revive Kreese and a handful of other legendary “Karate Kid” characters, including Daniel LaRusso and his nemesis Johnny Lawrence. See KOVE, Page 9RE

Season 5 is set to be released on Netflix Sept. 9.

Tennessee story After a cross-country move from Los Angeles to his new home just outside Nashville in late 2021, Kove’s Tennessee story has just begun, cigar and all. The actor told The Tennessean he never planned to end up here, but on the advice of a friend (and fellow castmate), he came for a visit and ended up a homeowner. “William Zabka turned me on to Nashville,” Kove said. Zabka, also a Nashville resident, played Johnny Lawrence in the “Karate Kid” movies and revived the character in “Cobra Kai,” which revisits the characters 34 years after their original appearance in the 1984 film. “I really love it here,” Kove continued. “I love the ambiance, the people, the trees, but I had looked at 20 houses in the Nashville area and couldn’t find what I wanted.” Then Kove’s girlfriend Mary Squire found this home on the internet. It was an Airbnb at the time, but during a break from shooting “Cobra Kai” in Atlanta, the couple stopped by the home to get a look at it in person. “The owner of the home sent the renters out to lunch and paid for it so we were able to stay for an hour and look at it,” Kove said. “We closed the deal during that lunch.”

Actor Martin Kove’s home outside of Nashville, Tenn., has a rustic, Tuscan feel to it. The home sits on 11 acres and Kove said he was initially drawn to the land, but also loved that the house needed very little work to make it “perfect.”

Southern hospitality Kove, originally from Brooklyn, spent the bulk of his adult life living and working as an actor in Los Angeles, which he says isn’t the same town it was when he arrived in the 1970s. He has more than 100 movies and television shows on his acting resume. “I really moved to Nashville because I felt a little strangled in L.A.,” he said. “There’s too much of everything. It’s too cluttered. There’s too many people. Here, I have 11 acres. I sit here, relax and have a cigar. I love to walk the property.” He added that he loves the Southern vibe of Nashville and the overall disposition of the people. Kove recently had a small issue with the home’s sprinkler See KOVE, Page 10RE

system, and the previous owner helped him fix it. “He just came over, which is so typical of Nashville,” Kove said. The home he is settling into is an updated ranch-style house infused with a bit of Tuscan flair. Accents like large, dramatic doors and arched doorways, columns and a taste of old Italy drew Kove in immediately. “When I walk through this place, it is not only a Tuscany villa, it’s a Viking castle,” he said. “It wasn’t the Western motif I was used to. My house in Los Angeles had large ‘The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’ posters and all kinds of Western artifacts, but this is Italian country. I thought it was elegant but country enough to have that taste of the Old West, yet it wasn’t. It was a taste of old Italy.” And it was already decorated, a huge selling-point for a busy actor who doesn’t have time to shop for silverware, window coverings or furniture. “I didn’t have to do much to make this

place perfect,” he said. “It was all done so tastefully. The furniture, the artwork, silverware – it was all first class and all left by the previous owner. For me to make a transition to a home coming from L.A. and be plagued with having to buy everything, that would have taken me forever. It was all here and I liked the style. It was rustic. I was very happy.”

scrapbook. His tone softens a bit before he continues. “The reason why you have a place like this is to share it with family. If you lose that aspect of life, you might as well just become a hermit and live in a hotel room. This is really for my kids. Leaving them a ranch in Nashville is a lot better, I think, than leaving them a place in L.A.”

Career and family

Second chance for a first impression

The one thing Kove did add to his home is a bookcase dedicated to his career, which includes some 50 movies and 40 television shows. He said unlike in Hollywood, where people’s careers tend to dominate their decor, he wanted to be a bit more understated. “The only thing in this entire house about Martin Kove is right here,” he said. A closer look reveals the depth of Kove’s career. Work with Quentin Tarantino, a role in “Rambo: First Blood Part II,” some “Karate Kid” and “Cobra Kai” memorabilia, mementos from his favorite Westerns, and one section dedicated to his children: twins Jesse and Rachel Kove. “These are all my favorites,” he says, gesturing at the bookcase-turned-

While Kove is acclimating to life in Nashville, his initial months here were anything but idyllic. In fact, he describes the weather during January and February as “unbearable.” “It was so cold, I couldn’t walk around. I was alone. I had just moved here. It was intolerable. We had four snowfalls. It was a disaster. I felt so isolated in the snow because the town shuts down. I didn’t know where I was going half the time and the stores weren’t open anyway. My first two months in Nashville I said, ‘Wow, did I make the right decision?’” But he got through his first Tennessee winter and is now daydreaming about projects in and around his proper-
