Prior to earning his real estate license, Ken enjoyed a successful career in the lending industry. He perfected his compassionate approach to serving clients by educating them, staying ahead of the process, and keeping an eye on the details. “My years in lending taught me how to organize everything in chronological order. I fully understand the process and I clearly set expectations with my clients by explaining the steps, what they need to do, and how we can be successful together. After experiencing how he made a positive impact in the lives of others as a mortgage banker, Ken realized he wanted to play an even more pivotal role for people purchasing and selling property. “In lending, I was able to help clients get into, or stay in, their homes. As a real estate agent, I experience a deeper, more personal side of the industry,” he adds. LOUISVILLE, Ky. – During the week, Larry and Mary Kay Hesen live in downtown Jeffersonville, Ind. But on the weekends, the Indiana couple take a 40minute drive to Guist Creek Marina and Campgrounds in Shelbyville, Ky., where they enjoy quiet time along Guist Creek Lake in their newly renovated Airstream travel trailer.

“They’re so nostalgic,” Mary Kay said, adding that once she decided she wanted an Airstream, she became focused on finding one. “(I) just (kept) looking and looking,” she said. “They’re hardly ever (up) for sale, (but) we found this one in Henryville.” She says the 160-square-foot camper was from 1973, and in terrible shape. “I wouldn’t even step foot it in,” she recalled. “It was so bad. The water was coming through the vents. I (knew it was) going to be a total fixer-upper.”

“Our grandkids love it,” she said. “I guess it’s the fact that it’s so tiny; they feel so comfortable. We just love it here. It’s enough room for my husband and I and our grandkids – it’s perfect.”

“My husband happened to see Mike’s truck … in rural Kentucky,” Mary Kay recalled, adding that the timing was perfect, as they had just purchased the Airstream but had no idea who would be able to carry out the remodel. They’d called several contractors who they’ve worked with before, but they all passed on the project.TheHesens searched for Michael Madley Design online and reached out to him via Instagram. He agreed to work on their camper, and the rest is history.

“We sit out (on the deck) all the time,” she said. “I love to watch the boats. … This gave us a bit of a water view and more outdoor living (space).”

“We’ve got a Blackstone griddle that we bring out (from) the shed,” Mary Kay said, “and we’ve had as many as 22 people out here for Memorial Day weekend.”There’s also a firepit next to the shed, and just in front of the camper is their latest addition: an aboveground pool. “You see them all over Pinterest, so we had to get on that bandwagon,” Mary Kay said with a laugh. “We had three kids in it (the other) night and they had a ball – so (it) was worth every penny.” She adds that their grandchildren have been enjoying the weekend getaway spot just as much – if not more – than she and Larry have.

The entire trailer was redone by Michael Madley Design, with design touches picked out by Mary Kay Hesen.

The space now features a new powder room, luxury vinyl flooring, custom cabinetry, and quartz countertops, with a queen bed on one end and a sofa on the other. The design touches are all Mary Kay’s doing and include fun finds she discovered on Etsy as well as unique pieces that have popped up on her Instagram feed. There’s an ice cream-shaped mirror in the powder room, fan decals on the front door, and whimsical pillows on the deck, which was another custom-built addition to the Hesens’ camper – and is Mary Kay’s favorite space.

Their deck offers protection from the elements, with seating for two as well as a minibar. And just a stone’s throw away at the edge of their lot, the Hesens had a small shed built. The structure provides additional storage, a place to cook and a space for entertaining.

The Hesens purchased and moved the Airstreamto their current space by Guist Creek last October and finished the renovations this past April. It was completely gutted, and with the help of local furniture design company Michael Madley Design, everything inside is brand new.
