Maybe you don’t own any green clothing and have never seen a real-live shamrock. Perhaps you’ve read some James Joyce or William Butler Yeats for a class assignment but can’t quite remember. “Pride (In the Name of Love)“ is the only U2 song that rings any bells, and to you, having a rasher is something that requires a trip to the drugstore. Regardless of your exposure to Ireland’s culture and history, you don’t have to be Irish or particularly lucky to have the Valley’s numerous Irish pubs heartily welcome you with open arms — and likely with a pint of Guinness. Here are some great ones to check out on St. Patrick’s Day and beyond.
Seamus McCaffrey’s The iconic pub is known for its impressive selection of whiskeys and Irish brews on tap and its dark, hole-in-thewall charm in the heart of downtown Phoenix. Pair your libation of choice with one of the boxty entrées that feature a potato pancake with companions like chicken in a white wine cream sauce, corned beef and cabbage or steak bathed in Guinness gravy. Details: 18 W. Monroe St., Phoenix. 602-253-6081, seamusmccaff reys.com.

Murphy's Law Irish Pub & Ale House entertains with rock and dueling pianos and a menu that includes Jameson wings, burgers, salads, fi sh and chips, stuffed Yorkshire pudding and chicken shepherd's pie. KELLIE HWANG/AZCENTRAL.COM
Skeptical Chymist
Dubliner Irish Pub and Restaurant This neighborhood joint is a hot spot for sports viewing and weekend live music. House specialties include the corned beef sliders, shepherd’s pie and a Rueben that’s piled with grilled corned beef or turkey with kraut, Swiss and 1,000 Island dressing on rye. Details: 3841 E. Thunderbird Road, Phoenix. 602-867-0984, dublinerpub.com.
Rosie McCaffrey’s Irish Pub and Restaurant If the name sounds familiar, there’s a reason. Belfast native Seamus McCaffrey is the original owner of the 30-yearold downtown Irish pub that bears his name. After selling it, McCaff rey opened Rosie’s a few miles north on Camelback Road. fi rst to introduce Guinness draft to the Valley, and Rosie’s wide-ranging beer list includes favorites like Harp, Kilkenny Cream Ale and Smithwick’s, in addition to local wares. Rosie’s Famous Egg Rolls stuff ed with corned beef and cabbage, Harp battered onion rings and Guinness steak and mushroom pie are stick-to-your-ribs promises. Details: 906 E. Camelback Road, Phoenix. 602-241-1916, rosiemccaff reysirishpub.com.
Named for Irish author Robert Boyle’s book, this rustic watering hole takes its inspiration to the limit with wood furnishings, vintage books and antiquey wooden card catalog boxes between chalkboards with beer off erings. Do the Green Tea shooter – Bushmills, peach schnapps and lemon-lime soda – with pals before splitting a plate of corned beef fritters. The Derry Milk Stout steak pie features a seared fi let, leeks, potatoes and carrots in puff pastry. And although poutine hails from Canada, the Quebec staple has its own section. There’s the Rueben version with corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss and 1,000 Island, and the Irish rendition is topped with lamb stew, crispy rashers and whiskey peppercorn gravy. Details: 15689 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale. 480-609-8677, skepticalchymist.com.

Dark wood, brick, stained glass and a windy bar encourage guests to linger. Details: 1744 S. Val Vista Drive, Mesa. 480-507-7827, theharpaz.com.
Murphy’s Law Irish Pub Beer fans fl ock to downtown Chandler to ponder a vast beer lineup from near and far dispensed from three dozen taps. Early weekend risers can fuel up for weekend brunch served from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Standouts include the traditional Irish breakfast, Bailey’s French toast made with challah bread and the poutine-in-disguise beer-battered Hangover Fries piled with bacon, cheese curds, roasted jalapeno cheese sauce and, of course, sunny-side-up eggs. Details: 58 S. San Marcos Place, Chandler. 480-269-2400, murphyslaw.pub.
Rula Bula The name is adapted from a Gaelic language expression that means “uproar and commotion in a celebratory time.” It’s an appropriate name for this Mill Avenue hotspot housed in a historic building and former 19th-century saddle and harness shop, the inspiration for much of the décor with an Irish twist. It’s always buzzing with patrons craving an authentic Guinness pour from the antique bar, live music on the corner stage and a morsel or two from the extensive menu. This Chandler spot was the Skeptical Chymist owners’ fi rst foray into the pub business. And it leaves no doubt as to its inspiration with Celtic furnishings and touches throughout. Casey Moore’s Oyster House What it lacks in traditional Irish décor, this downtown Tempe-area bar located in a century-old home more than makes up for in spirit, in more ways than
one. It’s a popular haunt for locals and university students who enjoy the seafood, hearty bar eats and libations. It’s also said to be haunted as tales of a mysterious woman being seen dancing in the second level dining room and collars and ties getting tugged by an unseen force. Spend your time deciding if the rumors are true over a some of the famous oyster dishes, like the fried oyster po-boy or Oysters Rockefeller. The homemade crab cakes served with inhouse chipotle remoulade is a perennial crowd-pleaser. Details: 850 S. Ash Ave., Tempe, 480-968-9935, caseymoores.com. See PUBS, Page 6

Phoenix Pride is moving forward with its 40th annual festival next month with additional precautions for the new coronavirus, the group said in a statement earlier this week. “We know there have been concerns about holding the Phoenix Pride Festival and Parade at this time, due to the possible spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus,” according to the statement. “Phoenix Pride remains committed to providing our audiences with an exciting and safe celebration of the unique spirit of the LGBTQ+ and allied communities, and we are working closely on a daily basis with local, state and federal agencies to plan for a safe event.” The statement does not detail what the additional precautions are. Phoenix Pride decided to hold the festival and parade as planned after consulting with its partners at the city of Phoenix and in the public health sector, the statement reported.
The safety of guests, sponsors, volunteers and community is “paramount to our mission,” and Phoenix Pride will remain vigilant and advised of ongoing developments regarding the risks and spread of COVID-19. The organization will monitor the virus’ daily developments and “is fully committed to instituting additional steps to help safeguard the health and safety of our guests and participants as needed.” “We look forward to celebrating our 40th anniversary events safely and with all of the spirit, excitement, fun and diversity that are the hallmarks of Phoenix Pride and the communities we serve,” according to the statement. The festival is scheduled from noon to 9 p.m. April 4-5 at Steele Indian School Park, near Indian School Road and Central Avenue. A key part of the festival, the annual parade, is scheduled at 10 a.m. April 5 beginning at Third Street and Thomas Road and then traveling north on Third to Indian School.

Mom having trouble navigating society’s slow to change norms Ask Linda Linda Cohen Guest columnist
Dear Linda, I’m having some mixed feelings about the playgroup that my daughter and I are part of. The group is composed of young moms and their toddlers, and close friendships have been formed. I’m beginning to think that my ideas of child-rearing are very diff erent from the other moms’. There are too many gender-specifi c comments regarding the boys and the girls. One little boy and girl were playing together and the girl was playing with a truck. The mom told her that girls don’t

When I dressed my daughter in a warrior outfi t at our Halloween party, I got some negative side comments from some of the moms. Am I being too sensitive on this issue? I could use your input, please. —Socially Pressured Dear SP, I think that your perspective on child-rearing is excellent. Treating boys and girls on equal footing is coming about slowly but is not fully in the mainstream.

Recently, I read a study that concluded that children in elementary and high school who have platonic relationships developed more empathy and could communicate more easily to either gender and treated each other in a more egalitarian manner. Please keep in mind that the acceptance of new social norms is slow-going. I’ve noticed that some retailers are starting to remove gender signage, but generally we have to accept that the social change you are speaking to isn’t mainstream at this point. You can express your feelings to the moms in the group if you haven’t already and see if some are in agreement with your parenting style. an area more liberal and accepting of gender equality from birth. I’m pointing out that where you live plays into changing traditional long-standing social norms. It’s also important to point out how you feel to other parents and teachers as well. Good luck, and while you may fi nd your child-rearing philosophy a challenge, stick with what you believe in. Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia
ARE YOU AT RISK?
According to a recent study by Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and the National Institute on Aging, men and women with hearing loss are much more likely to develop dementia and Alzheimer's disease. People with severe hearing loss, the study reports, were 5 times more likely to develop dementia than those with normal hearing.
Have you noticed a change in your ability to remember? “The more hearing loss you have, the greater the likelihood of developing dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Hearing aids could delay or prevent dementia by improving the patient’s hearing.”

Recognizing our Vietnam War veterans’ sacrifi ces Veterans Voice Paula Pedene Guest columnist
National Vietnam War Veterans Day is observed every year on March 29 and is a way to thank and honor our nation’s Vietnam veterans and their families for their service and sacrifi ce. The observance, which will run through 2025, endeavors to highlight the assistance of our armed forces and support organizations during the war, to pay tribute to wartime contributions at home by American citizens, to highlight technology, science and medical advances made during the war and to recognize contributions by our allies. The commemoration honors U.S. armed forces personnel with active duty service from Nov. 1, 1955, to May 15, 1975, regardless of the location of service. The Arizona Military Museum will host a special ceremony from noon-5 p.m., Sunday, March 29, at 5636 E. McDowell Road and the National Guard headquarters in Phoenix. There will be light refreshments and a short ceremony at 2 p.m. Joe Abodeeley has dedicated 40 years to the museum as its president. He is an “in country Vietnam veteran” who diligently strives to ensure the museum houses authentic artifacts, weapons, art and vehicles to help tell the Vietnam War story as well as other stories from various other wars. “We may have one of the largest Vietnam displays in the country,” he said. “There’s a Huey (helicopter) in the mid-

dle of it, and we’re working on a Khe Sanh diorama. When I started as president in 1980, Vietnam was as far as we could go. Since then, we’ve added Desert Storm and other recent wars. You can damn the war, but don’t damn the warrior.” During the Vietnam War, Abodeeley was a platoon leader for Operation Pegasus, which was the April 1968 airmobile operation to relieve the besieged U.S. Marine fi rebase at Khe Sanh. He successfully led the fi rst Air Cavalry platoon that reached the fi rebase, after sev-
en days of fi ghting. He is most proud of the fact that he didn’t lose one soldier under his command during his entire tour in Vietnam. Although the Khe Sanh operation was only a week, he commanded troops for six months as a platoon leader and supervised soldiers in other capacities for an additional six months in Vietnam. He retired from the Army as a colonel. Hosting the Vietnam War Veterans Day is a unique commemoration to Abodeely and more than 165,000 Vietnam veterans who reside in Arizona. The

How small sparks of generosity have big community impact Your Turn Shannon Clancy Guest columnist
There’s a day for everything now. National Doughnut Day, National Car Wash Day, National Haircut Day. But one day, in particular, struck me: March 13, National Good Samaritan Day. The intrigue isn’t that being a good neighbor is itself odd. It’s that we’ve marked a single day to celebrate and remember to be kind and to reach out to help people in need. Is kindness and generosity to those we meet in such limited supply that we need a special day to be reminded to do good by one another? In my work at St. Vincent de Paul (SVdP), I can assure you that the desire to live out goodness and generosity for others is alive and well. Volunteers, donors and staff fl ock to our mission to help feed, clothe, house and heal vul-
nerable people in our community. While they fi ll the glasses for families in our dining halls, their glasses also get fi lled as they answer the call to care for one another. SVdP serves as a conduit for our community’s generosity, a way to funnel it to those in need, where there seems ample opportunity to show kindness. But that same opportunity exists far beyond nonprofi t doors. Last fall, at SVdP’s annual fundraising breakfast, we gave people the opportunity to be St. Vincent de Paul, to be that conduit. In what we called our Spark Generosity initiative, every attendee found at their seat a crisp underwritten $20 bill — an unusual sight at an event where most come to donate money. We challenged all 1,400 attendees to take that $20 and fi nd a small need in their community. Share an hour of company and dinner with an elderly neighbor. Sponsor a movie night for children whose
parents struggle to pay bills. It could be a friend or a stranger, planned or spontaneous, but no matter what, they had to search for ways to improve someone else’s life with that $20. The results were incredible. Responses in the coming days and weeks revealed a mass desire to spread kindness and the depth to which we feel called to serve one another. Our guests realized how many opportunities pass by us every day to improve the lives of others, and how diffi cult it can be to choose who and how to help when so many people are in need. But this exercise showed that it doesn’t take a grand gesture. Whether we help with $20 or a kind smile, it’s these single sparks of generosity that can create the fl ame that ignites real change. That simple generosity ripples outward, touching more lives, inspiring more kindness and, ripple by ripple, creates a better world. With National Good Samaritan Day,
our hope at SVdP is that this spark is reinvigorated and can continue to fl ame in our community. That kindness isn’t just on our minds for one day or one holiday season but becomes ingrained as a regular practice and allows us to create the community in which we want to live and work, where there is enough kindness and generosity for all of us. The Spark Generosity movement recognizes that small acts can create a big impact and that helping one helps the whole. None of us can do it all, but if each of us does our own little piece, then together we can create a kinder, more loving society. So how will you be that good neighbor to someone in need today? The fi ndings were submitted by the Police Department to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Offi ce in January. It was not immediately clear whether Arevalo had a lawyer.
