problem-solving solutions, and something truly special for her clients. Debra’s interior design style is elegant, but livable and emotionally compelling. Creating interior architectural details that provide dramatic focal points, Debra interweaves materials and furnishings in a fashion that is contrasting yet complementary and provides a very unique ‘wow’ factor for her clients and their guests.

Casa del Mio Cuore

overlooking the pool area, this eating space offers a circular coffered brick ceiling with custom handmade light fixture.

Nested on the corner of Lovebird Lane in the elite subdivision of Whitewing Estates, Casa del Mio Cuore boasts views of neighboring greenways and picturesque San Tan Mountain. Thoughtfully placed, this home mixes Santa Barbara Architecture with Tuscan cohesion. From the deep red tones that echo through the custom, one-of-a-kind stucco work to the exterior windows and out to the Mexican fire-kilned brick, this unique property invites you in with unified style.

On the east side of the home is the master suite. Offering another exit onto the covered patio and in close proximity to the spa, the layout of this suite is well placed for functionality and exhibits luxury. The fireplace in the suite includes a custom art piece which serves as the foundation for a wall-to-wall sitting area. Not do be outdone, the extraordinary coffered ceilings show off special LED light coves that provide the ideal atmosphere for the space. The room’s large custom closet includes plenty of shoe racks, a coffee bar and a built-in refrigerator. The master bath boasts rare backlit granite countertops and a raised shower overlooking it all.

Debra May Himes, ASID, IIDA, LEED AP has been a leader in the design community as an award-winning interior designer for over 30 years. Working throughout the United States, Debra’s portfolio encompasses both residential and commercial projects.

Cantera trimmed archways define entrance to the home, beckoning you to the front door made of solid black walnut. Entering, your eyes are drawn to the rear glass walls that showcase the waterfall features of the pool. Adding to the open concept of this home are five conveniently placed glass doors that all exit to the back covered patio area. High-beamed ceilings made from Pennsylvania mushroom wood accompany open areas elegantly. The formal dining area offers a unique Mexican brick coffered ceiling. Placed in an oval alcove, these fire-kilned bricks are backlit with LED lights. When entertaining, the glass walls in the room open to reveal an exterior dining area set atop Siena pavers and nestled next to one of the homes three custom cantera fireplaces. In the kitchen you will find high-end appliances by Wolf and Subzero surrounded by custom cabinetry in a white-washed glaze and sand-through finish. This finish reveals just a hint of the wood's rich color and ties in nicely with the rest of the pieces in the home. Adjacent the family room and kitchen is the home’s breakfast area. Situated in an alcove of large windows

North to the backyard, you will find all the modern conveniences expected in a luxury home including an infinity edge spa, pool with swim-up bar and outdoor kitchen by way of sunken Ramada with integrated TV and sound system. Past the guest hallway is the laundry center. Here you may notice a hidden rack system that allows for easy access to all the home's internet, TV and smart technology while providing an inconspicuous place for storage. Housing this rack system is a skillfully designed custom cabinet surround with sink, drip bar, and built-in iron. Off the laundry and through the guest hall is the spacious 4- car garage. Here you will find the same rich molding you see throughout the home and specialty flooring that simulates flagstone. The garage is housed by cedar doors and accented with dark iron hardware to match the handmade exterior fixtures and railings. Upon exit, Siena pavers lead you out the curved drive and tie back into the front walk and dining areas bringing full circle this unified and well thought out floor plan. 15

Official Charity

House of Refuge is a 501 (c)3, non-profit that assists Arizonian homeless families and individuals by providing transitional housing and supportive services as they strive towards self-sufficiency and permanent housing. Since October 1996 House of Refuge has assisted over 6,000 Arizonians move from homelessness to permanent housing. Located on the former Williams Air Force Base, the repurposed military housing is ‘home’ to approximately 250 homeless individuals. The typical family consists of a 35 year-old female, single, head of household, with two or three children and a minimal support system. She typically earns $1,100 per month.

24

The Social Service programming focuses on identifying issues that created the cycle of homelessness. There is a strong emphasis placed on life skill development, sustained employment, advancing education and financial literacy. Through a multi-agency collaborative effort, House of Refuge is able to offer participants an on-site Maricopa Workforce job readiness program.

2013 we opened the Little House, an Early Head Start Center where children are provided with a safe, nurturing environment that promotes school readiness for children ages birth to three years of age.

Many families enter House of Refuge with very few household items. With strong community support, individual homes are refurnished and food is provided. All items received while in the 24month program remain with the participant as they move into permanent housing.

No one person, no one team can provide this programming alone. It takes a community of dedicated donors and volunteers to wrap around the families. To not only help them rebuild their lives through support and programming, but to literally provide those items they need to rebuild their homes and ultimately their lives as they move into permanent housing. House of Refuge is grateful for all the contributors to this program.

Through collaboration with Maricopa County Early Head Start, in February

As you enter this architectural masterpiece, you’ll walk through the grand hand-carved front door (a replica of a door on a home in Michoacán, Mexico) and cantera surround into the dramatic grand portal, covered loggia and courtyard. The private courtyard replicates a Mexican style compound adorned with vertical wall gardens and potted flowers surrounding a stunning fireplace. On the north side of the courtyard is the Casita, which can be used for an office, a music or guest room. Once you enter this private retreat, it becomes evident every detail and finish has been thoughtfully chosen for both quality and stunning design. Five exposed truss beams peak at a twenty-three foot ceiling height with two grand chandeliers. The fireplace is adorned with a carved cantera. The grand room is open to a chef’s kitchen with a casual dining area that features Old and New World cabinetry. The kitchen flows into the formal dining room, which opens up to the courtyard for entertaining.

On the west side of the home you’ll find a fabulous tequila room, one of the first of it’s kind! This room has a Mexican pinto veneer ceiling, unique cabinetry and under-counter refrigerator designed for all types of refreshments. La Casa De La Paloma Blanca has four bedrooms, with a fifth bedroom option, and five bathrooms. Upon entering the master suite, you will see the grand brick dome in the ceiling with a gorgeous chandelier. The master suite includes a one-of-a-kind fireplace with multiple tiled barrels in the ceiling. There is also a coffee/wine bar with an under-mount refrigerator built-in for relaxing in your private suite. One of the master closets has a hidden surprise—a vault! The vault door was custom-made for this project and weighs 1,200 lbs.! You can hide your most valuable possessions and no one will know!! The flex room has sliding barn doors to close it off when you want more privacy. The east side of the flex room opens up to a private garden and sitting area adorned with trees, plants, flowers and a Mexican tile wall fountain. Each bedroom has its own private bathroom decorated with unique tile designs and patterns to match the room. La Casa De La Paloma Blanca is a gorgeous Mexican colonial that is ideal for all types of gatherings…friends and family, inside or outside. The builder, Carla Sharp, and her design team have truly created an architectural masterpiece.

DREAMS TECHNOLOGY

HOME

Ever feel like you are having trouble keeping up with all the latest in home technology? Even for those of us in the industry staying up to date with the latest capabilities, products and services takes dedicated research and hours of training and practice. In my experience, every customer wants the absolute best and newest technology but must also balance these desires with the ever present constraints of a budget. Let’s take a look at some of the newest available technology and talk brass tacks about what’s available, what’s affordable and how to walk the fine line between cool and costly. 36

deal on one, especially during sale weekends and with rebates/incentives. With enough research and hunting, an affordable 3D TV won’t blow the budget and will give you a prize screen on which to view anything.

3D 3D TVs have been in the marketplace for years. Hollywood has made a huge push to make 3D a relevant technology as opposed to a side-show attraction. It has in some ways succeeded. 3D movies are decidedly more popular than they have been in the past and I estimate that roughly 1/3 of the displays I sell are 3D equipped. That said, rarely do I have a client who uses the functionality after install. This leads to the inevitable question, “Why buy a 3D TV?” My answer is simple: 3D televisions are the best 2D televisions. In order to accomplish the recreation of a good 3D image, manufacturers have to use all of their best 2D technologies to their advantage. 3D TVs usually have very fast refresh rates, great color reproduction and as limitless black levels as are achievable. Verdict: The cool/ costly line here is a bit easier to straddle. 3D TV prices have come down the past few years and it is much easier to find a great

4K Over the past decade, with the emergence of high definition television, manufacturers have undertaken an arms race to outdo one another. Frequently they use marketing gimmicks (Infinite levels of black!) to market a product that is essentially the same as last year’s release. However, the latest WMD in the video display war is 4K. 4K is a resolution standard, like 720p or 1080p, just now starting to make its way into consumer products. The current HD standard, 1080p, means simply that the TV has a screen resolution of 1,920x1,080 pixels. 4K roughly quadruples this resolution to 4,096x 2,160 pixels. Which is great, right? Because more HD is better HD, right? Well…

4K display looks no better than watching on a standard 1080p TV. And 4K TVs can be a heavy load on the wallet—the few models available cost 2x and up compared to an equivalent 1080p TV. Verdict: 4K, right now, leans to the side of costly. The benefits do not outweigh the costs for most people. If you find a great deal on a 4K TV that you really like, go ahead and buy it. It will help future-proof your equipment and they really do produce splendid picture quality. But for most of us, 4K is still a few years from viability.

sort of. Speaking for the few of us lucky enough to have seen a 4K television in person, I can attest that they look great. However, 4K is constrained by a lack of content to watch on these ultra high resolution displays. Currently, 4K content is limited to Blu-ray discs of iMax nature films and a select few Hollywood titles, like Avatar. But let’s be real: Watching a standard Blu-ray on a

Wired vs. Wireless Wireless technology, the savior of home systems integration! I hear this refrain from customers all the time. But just like in life, the advertisements always make the burger look better than what comes in the bag. I love wireless technology when I can use it. Let’s face it, it’s simple to connect things wirelessly, running wire takes lots of labor hours which drives up cost and there is less residual cost on things like patching and painting after the fact. It doesn’t take a PhD to understand the appeal of wireless. Professionally speaking though, I have some reservations. First, too much wireless in a home leads to an eventual clogging of the wireless airways. There is only so much spectrum to be had and layering device upon device onto a network will not only reduce wireless internet speeds, but cause inevitable missed cues and lost signals. Secondly, if the wireless network goes down everything on that network goes down. Security, A/V, Surveillance - you name it. A decent wireless router costs only a few hundred bucks but your entire system relies on it working flawlessly for years. Down time and outages can and do happen. To avoid this, wire your home correctly. If you are going to undertake the integration of your home systems, you would be wise to spend the extra time and money up front doing it right the very first time. Wired systems are reliable, more capable and will last for decades. As a general (Read: VERY general) rule, I follow the 80/20 principal: 80% of your home systems should be wired and 20% should be wireless. Wire your home thoroughly, design your systems well and then use wireless to fill in the gaps of feasibility. There is no doubt that wireless is the future of home systems. But don’t find yourself on the outside looking in while you wait for wireless capability to catch up.

I’d like to leave you with one final thought about home technology: it’s a complicated world and a majority of folks who expect to be able to do it all themselves wind up frustrated, disappointed or both. Professional trades exist for just that reason. There are very few non-professionals who have the wherewithal to plumb, electrify or heat/cool a home all by themselves. It’s no different with technology. Get advice, seek out multiple proposals, ask lots of questions and be tenacious! Yes, you can buy individual components from any big-box store or online, but those individual components are only as good as their implementation. Professional A/V contractors provide a lot more than just components. They provide a complete, engineered system and a complete technological experience. Find a contractor that wants to build a long term relationship. If they are trying to sell product before service, you’re likely better off going somewhere else. Your low-voltage contractor should be a resource first and foremost and an equipment supplier second. Our industry has grown leaps and bounds over the past two decades and it isn’t going away. Having a reliable and trustworthy resource will benefit you and your family for the duration of your home ownership. Choose wisely.
