Attractions
As one of the largest metropolitan areas in the country, there is a lot to see and do in the Phoenix area.
ASU Gammage; Phoenix Symphony; Phoenix Zoo; Musical Instrument Museum. The Valley is a mecca for the performing arts. If musicals are your thing, visit the Arizona Broadway Theatre, a 470-seat venue that is also a dinner theatre and features some of the biggest Broadway musical of all time. The Phoenix Theatre opened in the 1920s and is the state’s older performing-arts companies. See the stars of tomorrow at Valley Youth Theatre, which has many famous alumni including movie star Emma Stone and recording artist Jordin Sparks.
ASU Gammage, a 3,000-seat auditorium operated by Arizona State University, hosts Broadway Across America, the first-run tours direct from New York. It also has the ASU Gammage Beyond series, featuring modern dance and other eclectic performances.
Often likened to a pink wedding cake, the 1964 building was originally designed by Frank Lloyd Wright to be an opera house in Baghdad, Iraq. At the Phoenix Symphony, the orchestra is a multipurpose ensemble, playing classical concerts for one audience, pops for another, family programs and school programs. Under the direction of conductor Michael Christie, the organization has had a burst of youthful energy. Some of the world’s top composers, including Hollywood veteran John Williams, have performed here. If museums are more to your liking, take a trip to the Phoenix Art Museum, which also serves as the headquarters to
Artlink’s First Fridays art walk. First Fridays is an art walk that takes you throughout Downtown Phoenix to see some of the best artists the Valley has to offer. Admission to the phoenix Art Museum is free on this day, and guests can also enjoy drinks, tasty cuisine and live entertainment.
beautiful winter weather, stop by the Phoenix Zoo, where you can roam around and see over 1,300 animals, 200 of which are endangered species. The zoo offers encounters with certain animals, including camel rides and giraffe feedings, and has many activities for kids, including a carousel and splash pads.
Also popular is the Valley’s newest museum, the Musical Instrument Museum. The MIM boasts over 14,000 different pieces, most of which are musical instruments from all over the world. MIM also features unique live musical performances, from Turkish folk music to the likes of Shawn Colvin and Arturo Sandoval.
The Arizona Science Center is one of the most hands-on centers in the country, featuring a number of inter-active exhibits on topics ranging from weather to the human body. The IMAX and Planetarium features cutting-edge technology that will take you on a journey through space and time.

Day trips
Experience the best that Arizona has to offer with trips outside the Phoenix metropolitan area.
Monument Valley (above); Sedona.
Sedona is popular with Arizona natives and winter visitors alike. Sedona’s red rocks are one of the most well known attractions in Arizona and provide unbeatable picturesque scenery. Sedona also has a wealth of shopping, with art and jewelry that is uniquely Arizona. Get a better view of the city in a pink Jeep tour or hot air-balloon ride. Sedona and nearby areas such as Slide Rock State Park are perfect for hiking, camping, swimming or fishing.
Just north of Sedona are a number of other popular destinations, including, of course, the world famous Grand Canyon and Flagstaff, which boasts the highest point in the state, Humphrey’s Peak. On the border of Utah and Arizona is Monument Valley, where you can take a sunrise hot-air balloon tour. Buttes and monoliths rise in sudden vertical thrusts while enormous cloud shadows sweep across the landscape. Drama fills the viewfinder, turning every tourist into Ansel Adams.
Prescott has a rich history dating back to its days as the capital of Arizona. Downtown is a shopper’s paradise, with antiques stores and art galleries lining the streets around Courthouse Plaza. The plaza is a hub of activity year-round, with festivals all summer and holiday lights in winter. Learn about Arizona territorial history at the Sharlot Hall Museum, Western art at the Phippen Museum and Native American culture at the Smoki Museum.

Day trips
Kartchner Caverns; Tuscon; (inset) Mission San Xavier del Bac The Kartchner Caverns are rated one of the world’s 10 most beautiful caves and feature an out-of-this-world environment. Tour “living” caves that were discovered in 1974 and kept secret before the site was purchased by Arizona State Parks in 1988, then opened to the public in 1999. Take advantage of the Big Room Tour; the halfmile, 90-minute tour offers an intimate look at the cave formations located in the Whetstone Mountains, just 40 miles southeast of Tucson.
Speaking of Tucson, Arizona’s other major metropolitan area offers a vibrant downtown, abundant hiking, a variety of attractions and a thriving dining scene. Another bonus: slightly cooler weather. Check out Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Sabino Canyon and Saguaro National Park, for starters. You could spend the entire day downtown. Shop along Congress Street and Fourth Avenue. Stop in the funky historical Hotel Congress, known for its
concert lineup and Cup Cafe restaurant. Take a self-guided walking tour by following the 2.5-mile Presidio Trail. Have lunch and a scoop of ice cream at the casual Hub Restaurant and Creamery. Try 47 Scott or Downtown Kitchen + Cocktails for a grown-up night out. Take a trip back in time to the Old West town of Tombstone. The town has been cemented in history thanks to numerous
appearances in novels and movies. Discover the history of legends including Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday and walk wooden sidewalks where Earp and his brother once patrolled the town. You can see the courtroom where outlaws were tried and sentenced to be hanged. And you can see a gunfight staged by local actors. You also can check out the site of Tombstone’s most famous moment, the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Tombstone, “The Town Too Tough to Die,” is a national landmark.

“I had a great deal of pain in my low back, especially with walking and sitting. I tried many treatments including: pain pills, cortisone shots, and acupuncture. Nothing seemed to help very much. I tried LaserTech and now my pain level is almost a zero. I am back to my relatively active life. I would definitely recommend LaserTech.” – Shirley J.
While Napa may be wine country for many people, those winos looking to stay closer to come don’t need to look far. Arizona has more than 60 bonded wineries owned by an eclectic collection of growers, including a Hollywood move producer and a rock star. Arizona wines have been served at the White House on many occasions. Arizona has three major growing regions: southern Arizona in the Sonoita/Elgin area, the Willcox area in Cochise County and the Verde Valley region. There are a number of lakes in Arizona, many within a one-hour drive of the Valley. Lake Pleasant is stocked with 12 species of fish as well as 4 miles of pedestrian trails. From boating to water-skiing to parasailing and scuba diving, this park offers an abundance of aquatic activities to keep visitors cool during the hot summer months. On the border of California and

Visiting Arizona wine country.
Arizona is Lake Havasu, known to many as “Arizona’s playground.” With lake beaches and the historic London Bridge, there’s something for the whole family at Lake Havasu. Arizona may not have a beach of its own, but Puerto Penasco (better known as Rocky Point) is just a short drive away from the Valley. Known as “Arizona’s Beach,” this resort town is the perfect place to enjoy surf and sand under the sun. Aside from lounging by pools and drinking margaritas or various blended beverages, you can do all kinds of things in Rocky Point. Lovely beaches, bird sanctuaries and lava craters are just some of the cool things to check out beyond the pool. For more day trips, join the Sun Club at 3WVG.azcentral.com

Golf
The Valley has over 250 courses to choose from, stunning desert backdrops and unbeatable weather.
Ventana Canyon Golf Club 6200 N. Clubhouse Lane, Tucson 520-577-1400; ventanacanyonclub.com • Set in the Santa Catalina Mountains, both of these courses designed by renowned architect Tom Fazio are highly acclaimed. The Canyon Course, which winds through Esperero Canyon, has plenty of “wow” factor on the edge of a huge nature preserve with canyons and arroyos, giant saguaros, massive rock formations and abundant wildlife.
Troon North Golf Club 10320 E. Dynamite Blvd., Scottsdale 480-585-5300; troonnorthgolf.com • Around 1990, Troon Golf Management took the chance of building an upscale golf facility with the hope that public golfers would be willing to pay for a private-club experience. It was a huge success and set the standard for quality public golf in metro Phoenix. This facility offers a Callaway Performance Center, a state-of-the-art clubhouse, some of the finest dining available at any golf venue and stay-and-play packages through its partner, the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale.
We-Ko-Pa Golf Club 18200 E. Toh Vee Circle, Fort McDowell Reservation 480-836-9000; wekopa.com • “Pure golf” is the best way to describe this facility, with two highly regarded courses that are devoid of development except for a delightful clubhouse with desert-vernacular styling and a rugged halfway house. Cholla opened in 2001, and Saguaro, designed by the award-winning team of Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, debuted in 2006. Some publications now rank them as Arizona’s best public courses.
The Boulders Club 34631 N. Tom Darlington Drive, Scottsdale 480-488-9028; bouldersclub.com • The North and South courses are loaded with photo opportunities, created by mammoth boulders, where you often can see adventurous climbers rappelling. Rosie’s Rock, a balancing rock that stands six stories high on the South Course, has served as the backdrop for hundreds of weddings.
