Wilson Family HOME: Thayer, MO (Oregon County)
My first experience with the Ronald
McDonald House started in 1993 when I was a baby in the NICU at Cox South. Although I can’t really tell you much about it, it makes me glad to know my family was near me when my Great-Great Grandma tells the story. My second experience began way before I wanted it to when I found out my second baby, Sophia, had enlarged ventricles in her brain. She was diagnosed with Congenital Hydrocephalus which causes excess water in the brain at birth. During my pregnancy, I stayed at the Ronald McDonald House a couple of times and found it to be warm and homey. Once Sophia was born, we stayed for about a week, and then made many more trips as she underwent several brain surgeries. The House offered us a second home when we needed it. Homemade meals, convenient laundry rooms, and a place close to Sophia. The friendly people and great environment relieved a little stress for us when we would urgently have to rush Sophia to Springfield. We appreciated knowing there was always an inviting place close by with sweet and friendly people. Sophia is now 5 years old and will turn 6 on February 3rd. She eats mainly by mouth, but still has to use her J-tube at night. We are working on her trying to drink more by mouth. Sophia can be really picky about the foods she eats, especially at breakfast time. She’s not like most kids, and doesn’t really care for French Toast, pancakes, or eggs, but she does love chicken. Thankfully, she doesn’t have to have any daily treatments anymore and she is no longer on oxygen! Sophia works with a physical therapist and occupational therapist. She recently had a hearing aid placed on her right ear as she is deaf in that ear. Sophia goes to kindergarten for 3 days a week until 1pm and greatly enjoys it!
