Editor’s Letter T H E D R E A M
The first autumn breeze has just kicked in, bringing along the fresh breath after a long period of intense heat. Should I reckon that this occasion automatically evokes romantic emotions which have been hibernating for long, inside each loving heart? Lingering over a cup of tea in a rustic bistro’s cozy corner, we found our minds wandering in sudden day-dreams, but our hearts being amazingly secure. The chill creeps into the air. The breeze caresses our afaces. The scarlet leaves crunch on the ground. As dreamy as the autumn scene may seem, the struggle out there is real. We see children struggling to achieve their dreams of good grades. We see fresh graduates struggling to find a job. We see figures struggling to shoot themselves to stardom. We see patients and relatives praying every day for the pain to wear off. In such a way, dreams are not solely the images and visions you see in your sleep. They are the reflection of your personality, your desires, your ambitions and also struggles
in life. They say that you have to have your dreams before making them come true. I agree. But even if you don’t have one, that’s alright, because sometimes nightmares are also counted as dreams. Just console yourself that thousands or even millions of people out there are also contemplating what their dreams could be. We’re young, so we’re still on our way to discover our dreams. That’s why in this issue, we want to deliver the stories of people who are finding their real selves and dreams in this crazy maze called life. To the whole Current Media team, producing this and previous issues is also like a “dream comes true”, especially when reality hits us hard that we are lacking human resources. There are times that we truly wanted to give up. Now that we think of it, we cannot forget those sleepless nights brainstorming, writing and even arguing with others when a crisis came. But after all, we still manage to survive and are living our dream, thanks to every single member’s dedication and determination to succeed. Well, at least that’s our story. What about yours?

PERSPECTIVE
Dream Recipe by Greywolf90
Do you dream? What are the things you saw in your dreams? Have you ever wished that your dream will come true? I might have some ideas for you.
Shopping List Item 1: A mind that flies. Item 2: A heart that loves. Item 3: A soul that is unshakable. Item 4: A goal worth dying for. Item 5: A companion that walks by you.
Ingredients 1 full cup of imagination (like Dumbo) ¾ cup of “I don’t want to quit” ¼ cup of “Feeling lucky” 1 whole heart of love Half of ruthless ½ cup of “I can do it” Friendship (the more the better it tastes) 3 spoon of happiness 1 small spoon of sadness 2 small spoon of carefulness A few drop of struggle sauces
November 2015 05
So, how do we start our dream? With a cup of nice warm milk, in a cozy bedroom, the light goes dim and you start drifting into the realm of dreams. You see Dumbo flying in the clouds. Timothy the mouse - Dumbo’s guardian aka his best friend is sitting on top of his head waving the tiny hand at you. Gently, they land in front of you like a feather. “Let’s hop in, we will fly you to the sky, where the stars are sparkling, the clouds are sweet and taste like cotton candy”, they say. They start to tell you their story, the story about their dream to fly. Dumbo was born a child elephant with abnormally big ears. His is deemed ugly and odd in his family and unfitted for his family business. They are all circus performers. With a smile sparkling on his face, Dumbo says, “You know what, I don’t really care about what others may think of me.
All I know is that I have to follow my dream, a dream to perform, a dream to be close with my mother once again”. You know now, that Dumbo had been splitted from his mother since the early time. For once in his lifetime, Dumbo knows he doesn’t want to give up on his dreams. Then, his friend, Timothy - a little mouse comes in and says, “I have never seen my friend, Dumbo, as a freak or an abomination. I saw a young talented elephant. I saw a flying elephant”. Their friendship escalated. Trust was born. Dumbo becomes the wings that depart into the future, having Timothy act as the eyes and brain. Luck may bring them together, but on top of that, it’s the strong will and desire that really make the elephant fly. All of this is cooked under the heat, which is in this case the pressure of social criticism and gossip. Dumbo says, “I heard the crows sing about me. They mocked my appearance and laughed to death when I said I wanted to fly, but you know what? I like their song.
Somewhat the song did not make me feel weak, but it strengthened my determination instead.” Timothy says: “My friend, as long as we stick together and I am still able to see the future, we will not fail. When you doubt yourself, please believe in me that I believe in you.” They both tell you “We believe in you” as they are making their way into the sky and disappear into the clouds, sun, moon and stars. Dumbo mumbles the song of the crow gang as they take off.
“
“I saw a peanut stand, heard a rubber band And seen a needle wink its eye But I be done seen about everything When I see an elephant fly When I see an elephant fly I’ve seen a front porch swing, heard a diamond ring I’ve seen a polka dot railroad tie But I be done seen about everything When I see an elephant fly I saw a clothes horse rear up and buck And they tell me that a man made a vegetable truck I didn’t see that, I only heard Just to be sociable, well, I’ll take your word I heard a fireside chat, I saw a baseball bat And I just laughed till I thought I’d die But I be done seen about everything When I see an elephant fly”

And now in your dream, you start to feel hungry. From a distance, you smell French bread, a perfect smell that awakens the whole senses. Are you awake or still day-dreaming? You see the Eiffel tower, the Louvre and the Promenade Plantée. At that moment you feel love, all kind of of love and the adrenaline is rushing up with desires. The appealing smell of freshly-baked bread you sense before tracing to a place called Gusteau. How wonderful that it makes your soul floats, weightlessly and effortlessly. Then, a rat opens the door, bending his body politely while waving you in. He is Remy - the one and only rat in Paris that can cook. The waiter, Linguini, comes to your table: “My friend, our honour to have you dine with us. We are having a special gourmet for your love. Let’s eat and talk about your dream and our adventure”. Remy retains a radiant smile on his face and asks: “How is the food to you so far?”. Needless to say, you just fall in love with his famous ratatouille and this lovely restaurant. Unlike the other rats that are banned in Parisan restaurants, Remy was blessed with an inborn sense of smell and a knowledge of food while his friend was not.
“I don’t know how to cook. I think I am good being a waiter. I want to leave the chef role for Remy. I will do everything to support my friend, since we both know we will get there together. We are like inseparable,” says Linguini. The next meal is served when Remy says: “This is the first time I cook this dish: Hakuna Mantata.” The dish shocks every one as the plate has nothing on it. Linguini says: if you want to do the impossible, you need to let go of all the negativity, become fearless and let your mind go. Just think about the future and how to get there. All of the negative criticism will drag you down further away from your dreams. So let’s imagine the possibility of future and Hakuna Matata.” For a moment of the mind drifted, the dish is formed with colors, shape, and smell.
Remy says: “With all of the pressure, I am able to make it happen because my family, along with my friend Linguini and Gusteau, are here to support me”. Today’s dessert is Remy’s special dish: fried pan ice cream with French bread crunch and chocolate syrups. All of the ingredients blend so well together and present a masterpiece. “The same goes for you”, Remy says, “It is okay to depend on others, to trust and to reach the common goal. Gustaux used to tell me: “You must have an endless imagination and a strong heart. You must try things that may not work, and you must not let anyone define your limits because of where you come from. Remember, your only limit is your soul”. Then, happiness comes after your success.

THE TALK
- Interview with Ms Heather Atkinson -
T
o find out how important having dreams is to our learning, I interviewed Ms Heather Atkinson, the school counsellor. Ms Atkinson is an educational psychologist with a special focus on helping students with their learning abilities.h children and young people living in care homes. They were quite disadvantaged and seeing some of them doing exceptionally well in school and academics, with all the challenges they faced , sparked my interest in learning and what it is that we can do in the learning environment to make sure that students can do their best. In an university environment, it is important for students and staff to have “growth” mindset. Someone with a “fixed” mindset would think that “I

am not good at maths, this is my limit and I can’t learn anymore” while others with a “growth” mindset has the belief that they can always learn more about everything and what they know is just a starting point. For everyone in the university, we need as many “growth” mindsets as possible to have an effective learning environment. Is it better for us to specialise in one field or learn everything? It depends on what your goals are. If, for example, you want to become a financial director, you could focus on a path this is mainly about finance. But, it’s not often that the job only has one particular function, as a finance director, you will need to deal with a team of people so you will need people skills,
communication skills, management skills and organisational skills. It’s about not taking a too narrow road as the job often have other expectations of you. Should we be sad when we don’t get good marks? It is helpful for students to have a realistic expectation of what they are working towards, if you have no expectation, it is difficult to measure whether you have achieved something or not. If you don’t achieve that, the first response would usually be disappointment, but all mistakes and situations like this are opportunities for learning. Students could reflect on what could they can do differently, what areas they have done well and what areas they need to improve on. They could work with the teaching staff to improve on their work. I encourage teachers to avoid the use of the word ‘fail’ and to consider using the phrase ‘not yet’.
So what happen if after the process of What do you think is the importance learning, we still haven’t found our of having dreams in relation to being goals yet? Wouldn’t it be like we are able to learn effectively? walking in a maze? To learn effectively, it is helpful for both students and teachers to have clear learning intentions and expectations. It is like playing a game, you need to know the rules to play effectively. For anything that you are going to learn, it is important for you to know what the goal is and for the teacher to share that goal because without knowing where you are going, it is very hard to find the right way to get there or to know when you have been successful.
That’s a big question. It’s very personal but I think self-awareness is a useful skill and quality that can be developed. . It’s important for you to know your strengths, your areas for development, your feelings and ability to respond to different situations. In life, there are highs and lows and being able to enjoy a range of life experiences is amazing. Being comfortable with yourself and enjoying many moments in life can be rewarding. A lot of work I do involve raising people’s awareness of themselves: the influence and power they can have just by looking at situations differently and by taking different response. If the same thing happens to you again and again, the way you respond didn’t work, it may be better to look at the situation from different angles and you might find a refreshing way of dealing with it and find that it’s within your power to solve problems.
Some people enjoy the maze, but other people would feel lost. If you are in university and you don’t know where you are going, there are a lot of helps available: the career adviser, the student adviser and myself. If students are feeling lost and don’t know what to plan for the future, there are a lot of tools available to help them find out their strengths, what is important to them and what their values are. Then we could look at what experience and qualifications they have, then help them see where If someone doesn’t know what they they might be going. So if someone want to do or what their goal is, it’s okay doesn’t have a dream right now, it’s not because sometimes, in the process of the end of the world. learning and discovery, you found out “Life is 10% what happens to you and what your goal will be. THE CITY
A Sweet escape
by Thu Anh P ham
Dreaming that you are on the way to escape from the noise, business of daily life. Uninhabited island, golden sand and waves lapping on the shore, they are all appeared in front of your eyes. Suddenly, the bell rings and you know you have to wake up; you realise that you are still in your office, stucks in the room with four walls. But hey, escaping does not necessarily mean that you have to go far far away. Sometimes, some places which you might never think of, will be the perfect choice to add a little sweetness to your boring life. And I’m here to recommend you three places, which I know will make you adore at first sight.
Mint Cupcake Creations 51 Ngo Hue
By passing the crowd and noise in Pho Hue, I turned right to a small and quiet alley - Ngo Hue - where Mint Cupcake store locates. Mint is decorated in a vintage style, with old floral paintings hanging on its white brick walls.
The store is not too crowded during the day and arouses a cozy and vintage feeling, especially in these autumn days of Hanoi. So for those who want to spend time alone with a cup of tea and cupcake with tranquility, this might be your next dreamland. More than that, Mint’s cupcakes are the ideal choice with over 20 cupcake flavors if you are looking for some something soft, smooth, moist but not too sweet. And if the cakes are too good to be tasted alone, why not sharing them with your loved ones? As Mint also desires to become a messenger to spread love and care, lovely notes are available for you to write down your thoughts or wishes for someone important to you. So just spend a day off, escape from the buzz of Hanoi for just one or two hours and enjoy a sweet afternoon with Mint Cupcake, yeah? Highly recommended cakes: key lime (for its harmony of sourness and sweetness), tiramisu and Nutella cupcakes.

O’Douceurs
91A Tran Hung Dao Located in the centre of Ha Noi, O’Douceurs is a perfect French bakery with extremely reasonable price compared with the quality offered. Walked into the patisserie, you will immediately be attracted by the buttery smell of fresh-baked bread and pastry and a huge glass storage full of marvelous pastries and sweet treats. You can find almost treats you can think of: from lemon macaron and different flavors of eclair, to Paris Brest - a special French pastry and various kinds of tarts. O’Douceurs also serves croissant, sandwichesand a good selection of coffee or juice freshly made in day. All the pastries are amazing, and so do the patisserie and customer service. The bakery has two floors, very cozy and suitable for family to have breakfast or brunch. On the second floor, there is a small bookshelf, where customers can enjoy a cup of espresso, sandwiches and have a good read. The owners of O’Douceurs are a French chef - Silen and his Vietnamese wife, who are terribly friendly, who always share with customers about their own experience. One more special member of O’Douceurs that you will never forget when you come to this patisserie is Su Kem - a labrador. This lovely guy will run after you wherever you go and cuddle with you, so be prepared for overloading cuteness! Highly recommended patries: Paris brest (for its exceptional french butter from Normandy), lemon meringue (for its sweet and sour lemon curd melting in your tongue along with crunchy buttery biscuit base).
Rauta House Cafe
No.1 Alley 97 Nguyen Chi Thanh A little romance, vintage and rusticity are mixed together to create a unique look of this cafe. While Rauta’s first floor can make you feel a bit cramped for its limited space, the second floor, also the main space of the cafe, is always full of sunlight and fresh air. Take a look closer, you will find out that every single thing in this cafe is a little surprise that awaits you to find out, along with nostalgia. The bookshelves are made of old wooden barrel. Old doors are recycled unbelievably into chair or decorated on the walls. All the empty glass bottles are colored and hung up as curtains. Old tires become tables, fences become wall decoration. How creative all these things are! Bob Dylan, The Beatles, John Lennon paintings and wooden boards hang around the room to remind people of the 60s hippie freedom spirit. Customers can have various choices from fresh juice, smoothie, cocktail to special drinks that can hardly be found anywhere else such as grapefruit juice with mint and aloe. Rauta also has several dishes like matcha sponge cake or french fries for refection. Highly recommended drinks: grapefruit juice with mint and aloe, orange cinnamon iced tea.

STUDENT BULLETIN
GET TO KNOW THE PRESIDENT & STUDENT COUNCIL 2015 Written by Duong Tran
A
fter roughly 2 months since the Presidential debate, I meet Giang again. No remarkable changes are noticed in his appearance. However, I no longer see a boy sitting in the Library with his earphones on and slides featured on the computer screen. Eyebrows lifted, he is completely immersed in the papers. The comfort of the sofa does not seem to make him any more relaxed. At that moment, I know another journey has really started for him – the journey of commitment to RMIT Community as the newly-elected President of Student Council (SC). The moment he sees me at the door, a radiant smile flashes on his face in place of utmost anxiety when working. Setting aside piles of work left to be dealt with, he sits back for a friendly talk, sharing with us about his new position. Photos of SC members, some stuffed kangaroos and koalas, a bunch of fresh flowers, every single ornament in SC office adds up to the warm atmosphere of our conversation.
How are you doing? How is the work different from your initial imagination? It’s going on quite well, I guess. A lot of things are still left to be learnt, but we are trying to keep up with the tasks from SC 3rd Generation and working on the long-term plan for upcoming semesters. I have a dream team. I get to meet many inspiring people, as imagined. However, SC itself is considered an office at RMIT, therefore it is essential to establish and maintain re-
lationships with other departments. This process requires time and effort. My position entails going to frequent meetings in both campuses, which means I have to fly from Hanoi to Saigon on a regular basis. Being President takes up a huge proportion of my time budget, so time-management skill is crucially important. At first, it is quite a challenge to balance between my daily life, studies and SC work, but I am getting used to it.
Back to the time before the Election, what or who inspired you to apply for the President position? “Inspired” is such a big word. Actually, I have taken part in several activities organized by SC and I found them really appealing. Apart from this motivation, I have received whole-hearted support from my fellows, who faithfully believe that I am a fit for the President position. They assisted me with designing and printing posters, escorted me to Saigon and even set up booth to call for vote. This
16 November 2015
enormous support gave me strength to overcome every obstacle during the campaign and reach the ultimate goal. Moreover, I am thankful that luck stayed with me in the Election, as the situation was quite tense in Saigon back then. This does not make me feel any inferior. It only reinforces my determination to try my best and give back to RMIT Community.
Can you be more specific about the difficulties you have encountered during the campaign? Many students, especially those in SGS Campus, do not know who I am. As a result, I found it really difficult to get my message across. I have my own vision as the President
and I was deeply concerned how to convince students so as to get their votes.
Do you think that students have lost faith in SC after the financial crisis last semester? I have to say the crisis has more or less affected the image of SC in students’ eyes. The first thing we are going to do as the newly-elected generation is to reaffirm our mission and how SC could impact students’ life. It is essential for us to successfully communicate with students about what SC did, will do and could do to facilitate RMIT students.
This semester, SC both in Hanoi and SGS campus will focus working on Students’ Right & Welfare. We endeavour to hear your voice. Once you raise your voice, you present SC with a chance to step in and better your academic life.
Lets sit back a little bit. What was your childhood dream? I am a crazy fan of football. My childhood dream is to become a professional football player, I guess. This dream is on the verge of coming true, since I spent a period of
time practising in The Cong football team. However, my parents saw no career prospect in this field, so…
“Just Be Fearless” So, what do you dream to be after graduation? I think my dream is different from the vast majority of RMIT students. Practically every fresh graduate would love to work for big companies like Big Four and get well-paid. For me, I desire to work for a start-up and learn from an experienced boss. If I am just a very small part of a system in a big company, a start-up offers me cross-function tasks, from which I could gain a thorough insight into the industry.
Once I get financially backed up with enough resources, I will grasp the chance of running my own start-up. To make this a dream come true, I have previously worked for some start-ups and followed my dad to some companies to observe their operation.
What do you want to say to youngsters, especially RMIT students who are about to spread their wings into the future and pursue their dreams? I think when you have a dream to pursue, you will give 100% of your time, effort and ability to realize your dream. That’s the most important thing. Even though you receive nothing other than failure, you have had a chance to do
what you really want and learn a lot from it. My advice would be: “Just be fearless”, we’re just 20 or something. We are still young and passionate. If you have enough confidence and preparation, your dream’s worth a try.
What are the last words on behalf of Student Council? Once again, we endeavor to hear your voice. If you raise your voice, we commit to give the most satisfying solutions to any of your problems.

PERSPECTIVE
My dream. from the past to present by Le Manh Hieu
Everyone has their dreams. Some want to be successful businessmen, accumulating wealth through trades. Some want to be public figures, to be admired by many others. Some want to be soldiers, to protect their countries. I myself also have many dreams. Some went away as fast as they came. Some lingered on for quite a long time but withered eventually. However, not all of my broken dreams left me the ache of having to give up but rather lessons and memories. The stories behind those dreams are what I am about to tell you, and hopefully, they will be exciting to you as they once were to me.
Dreaming to be a super-hero I think many of us have been there, dreaing about something impossible when we were young. For me, at the age of eight, I dreamed of becoming a superhero – the most common answer if you go out and ask a bunch of kids who watched power rangers at that time or even now.
22 November 2015
Being different than an ordinary hero from the history book, possessing the great power to change the situation were the traits I liked about those costumed hero and hence those superheroes became the role model of my childhood. I often played role-play games with the neighbour’s kids, imagining myself as a power ranger, brandishing my toy sword and shouting words the power rangers said when they transform. The most funny thing when I role-played with the neighbour’s kids was that everyone wanted to be the red ranger, since we assumed the red ranger, the most standout of the power ranger team, was the most powerful one. We even spent hours debating about the superpower of each power ranger.
From an economist to a writer
But role-playing wasn’t enough to satisfy our wild dream and imagination. An elementary friend and I even drew comics about those super heroes and created new heroes for those comics. I was quite fond of my creations - a super heroes team of five, with a cool robot guy armed with rockets and lasers. Sadly, our teachers and the mass media weren’t ok with our habit, as they said “fantasizing about superheroes is bad for mental health”. Hence, our comics was confiscated by teachers, but was taken back by my rebellious personality and the teacher just ignored that issue ever since.
Dreaming to be a great mechanic When I was at the age of 13, I realized that I loved tinkering with machines. That habit must have originated from hours of playing Legos and messing with old electronic equipments. To put it simply, I liked and still like assembling and disassembling stuffs. But back then, I was good at disassembling machines rather than putting them back together, which means destroying of machines was what I was good at. That “talent” of mine got me into many great troubles, as I still remember the look my dad gave me when I “accidently” dissembled his portable radio cassette, which I thought my dad never used. After that incident, the things I ever dared to mess with were pens and my computer. Without stuffs to practise my habit on, the dream to be a mechanic soon withered away, just like the previous dreams.
The years of high school were years of confusion for me. Everyone at school kept talking about my future career, including my mom and dad, and even my friends. Personally, I didn’t really care at all, or even had interest in any of those subjects they taught me at school. At young age, I dreamed of everything, but during that time, I was like a blind man trying to find his way, shrouded by darkness and confusions. One day, I found an ebook, called “basic economics” by Thomas Sowell, which was, obviously, about economics. I was fascinated. The way the book explained about economics was simple, not confusing and never bored me. The book inspired me to learn more about economics and my decision to take a course in economics. After one year, I learned numerous things: the basic knowledge of the market, how economy and currency works, and also the fact that I am really bad at memorizing things and doing math. Like a tragic fairy tale, my dream crashed and burned like the German zeppelin catching fire and burning to the ground in 1937. Now, I am a student studying in ProfComm program, doing my best to be a good writer and League of Legends player. I hope that this dream of mine won’t be a shooting star plummeting straight down the atmosphere, burning on its way to crash straight to the ground.
Conclusion From my own perspective, it can be said that a person’s dream can changes drastically with the passage of time, based on that person’s circumstances. Nevertheless, a dream without efforts is like a piece of coal, having the potential to be a piece of diamond, but needs great pressure to be so.

Everyone Deserves A Dream
By Thu Anh Pham
When I asked people to share with me their dreams, some said that: “My dream is small and boring, you should ask someone else who dreams big.” I told them there was no dream too big, and also no dream was too small.” Yes, you might want to become a superhero or president of US, or just to have a happy and wonderful life. And those dreams might seem small or unrealistic to others. But that is your dream, that is what you desire, and you know you will work hard to make it come true. So, don’t be afraid that somebody will laugh, be confident and tell me your dream.
28 November 2015
My dream is to have a successful career. When I was young, I thought it would be great to be a soldier because there was an army camp outside my house. However, my parents told me it was not safe, so I just considered it as a weird dream. And you know what, when you grow up, especially after college, many things changes , and so does your dream. It becomes more realistic after every year, when you become better and better. So I studied college in psychology major, which was not very popular in Malaysia at that moment. Therefore it was difficult to find a good job. After that I decided to study management additionally, go teaching management and I have to say I really like this job, even though it is not my dream in the beginning.
- Gana Gopalakrishnan (Lecturer) -
When I was a kid, I was always interested in cars, especially race cars. I had a huge car collection, so I wanted to work with cars, like being a car engineers. However, when I grow up, I somehow find myself want to go into business though I don’t have any clear vision about what major I want to work in. I had my first part-time job when I was in high school, while all of my friends were busy with preparing for university entrance exam. That job helped me find out that this society was too complicated and there were a lot of rich people out there. So I wanted to make a lot of money and have a successful career in the future. However, I think being an introvert is my biggest obstacle. I don’t like talking much because I’m always lack of self-confidence. I’m improving myself every day by trying to be more open to others though.
- Nguyen Duc Dung (International Business) -
I want to work in business, so I will study accountancy major in university. I get inspired from my parents because both of them work in business. I think I am more suitable to work with numbers and math more than jobs which have to go outside and be active. But until now, I want to finish my English course with good grades so I can start my university journey as soon as possible.
- Nguyen My Linh (English Student) -
After finish my English course, I want to study in Professional Communication because I want to become a Creative Director for a fashion company. The reason why i want to work in this field because I love fashion and going shopping. At the same time I also want to open a fastfood restaurant in Old quarter for foreigners. It can be my secondary job because food is my another hobby.

PERSPECTIVE
Wake Up, Daydreamers! by Ngo Quang Duong
If you have a dream to follow, you’re luckier than many other people who don’t know what they love. Dream nurtures our soul, give us a raison d’être, and differentiate us from each other. Thanks to dreams, we can experience more shades of feelings, and our lives are more vivid and worthwhile.
There are wisdom words and proverbs floating everywhere on the Internet that fuel you to pursue your dream at any price. They say that by doing what you love, you will always have motivation to work and you can abound in wealth with your passion. But hey, not every fairy tale ends with a happy ending. Because …
Who pays for your dream? Realistically speaking, humans are not marvellous machines fueled by air and water. Before flying with passion, at least we need to satisfy our basic demands such as food, power, clothes and many other things. Those who love the art of painting may know the genius Italian painter Amedeo Modigliani for his extraordinary portraits and nudes. His reputation only rose after his death, while during his lifetime Modigliani had very little success. His masterpieces now are sold in millions of dollars but he ended up his life at the age of 35 after suffering tubercular meningitis in poverty and misery. So
30 November 2015
do many other artists, who labour to death to create works among many of which eventually belong to rich art-collectors and art dealers. Some of artists win the lustre in lifetime, some live dimly in their contemporaries but are honoured by later generations whilst others disappear even when they are alive as well as when resting in peace. In case you haven’t planned to live lonely in this planet yet, it is not early to think of your family. I’m sure that the more mature you are, the greater responsibility you bear. The “Vietnamese King of Reportage” Vu Trong Phung completely wrapped up in pen and paper to feed his fam-
ily of five: newborn daughter, young wife, aged mother and grandmother. Then he died penniless of tuberculosis before his twenty-seventh birthday. Being bedridden at the end of his life, Vu Trong Phung uttered a sigh: ‘If I had a beefsteak a day, I wouldn’t die young like that.’ I don’t give prominence to materials but in the age of consumerism, money means many things. If you are from a wealthy background or you suddenly hit a jackpot, money could not be a big deal. If not, think twice before rejecting a career to pursue your dream when most of the dreams just bring satisfaction to your desire, not your wallet. Sorry if this discourages you a bit.
Passion does not guarantee success “Follow your passion, success will follow you”. It’s not as simple as that. You can say that you’re passionate about painting. You immerse in painting for months. But what next? Do you remember the old artist Behrman in “The Last Leaf ”? He dreamed of having a masterpiece for his whole life but eventually died of illness, and no one knew who he was. It’s obvious that dream is what you desire to do most, not really which you are the best at. Stories of individuals who devote comprehensively themselves to their dreams and accumulate a great deal of wealth usually become the inspiration source for us. Nonetheless the reason these people are famous is that they are the exception to the rule. They are salient among countless number of people who fall in hurt and failure when chasing their passions.
Dreams could be hobbies Not turning your dream into a career doesn’t mean you reject what you love. My best friend loves playing piano and keyboard. He practises everyday, not to be a great artist, but to satisfy the passion himself. His major in university is finance because he is very good at logically thinking and he believes this profession could guarantee his future. Music is what he loves but he knows it’s not what he does best. He considers playing music as a hobby to help him escape from daily stresses. His plan A is becoming rich in the role of an investor and then having a state-of-the-art recording studio for himself. Sometimes the pressure of turning an art into an income will make us feel stifled. Thus we can pursue dreams but not necessarily consider dreams as careers.
Love what you're doing Besides doing what you love, why don’t you love what you do? Remember the young man in Quiet Sapa, do you? He stayed in a mountainous area on his own doing works related to meteorology in silence for weather broadcasting. At first, he did not love this commission. However after a time, he changed his mind. Gradually, he recognized the interesting things of the job and was proud to commit himself to the society and the patriotic war in the fatherland. Predicting exactly what we would receive from destiny seems to be unbelievable. In case we have no other choices, it’s better to being pleased with things we are doing. Then we could surprise that our so-called boring profession can also bring happiness to us and make our life meaningful.
A win-win solution Rather than overdosing on passion blindly, everyone needs a purpose and a road to guide them. The life is neither too long nor too short, so halt a bit to wonder whether your passion now will be yours next ten years or whether you can pursue your passion for a living. If the answer is yes, then keep going and burn your youth with love and fervour.
C’est la vie!

AROUND THE WORLD
Technological scientists are warning us about the danger of Artificial Intelligence (AI), saying that they may take over the world and become our god. Yes, they, the billionaire Elon Musk, Bill Gates, a mathematics and physics scientist Stephen Hawking, and top AI researcher Demis Hassabis, are terribly serious. But what are they really talking about? What is AI? Is the threat real? Will there be a day when machines see us like the way we see chimpanzees today? A robust debate mounts surrounding whether machines become a superior race and surpass us regarding security, jobs, and human future.

AI ARTIFICIAL INTELLIENGE
“Give me the battery, human.
- says the Fridge.
32 November 2015
What is AI? Artificial Intelligence is the engineering and science of making intelligent machines and programs. Though it might be linked to the understanding of human intelligence, AI is not confined within the boundary of human biology. Talking about intelligence basically includes the computational ability to achieve certain objectives, which involves mechanisms to optimize a solution for a problem. Saying that a machine or program is ‘intelligent’ doesn’t mean it has high IQ (the rates at which intelligence develops among children). A machine that can read a long sentence or remember a long sequence of digits doesn’t mean it’s intelligent; it’s called intelligent when it performs tasks most effectively like washing machines, cleaning robots, and self-driving cars. It’s their usefulness that defines their “intelligence”. Since John McCarthy first coined the term AI in 1955, during 1960s and 1970s there were lots of AI innovations, for example the recognition of images, translation between languages, and understanding human languages. Despite the AI winter – the period when funding for AI went down, the science still held a fascination for all sci-fi writers, among which are Vernor Vinge, Hans Moravec and Rey Kurzweil who contributed in the popularization of the term “singularity”. A survey asked 100 AI research authors about when would the event of “singularity” – machines become better than human at everything occur?. Interviewees said that machines can take most of human’s jobs and perform at least as well as human, presumably no global catastrophe occurs, with 10% confidence in 2024, ,50% confidence in 2050, and 90% confidence in 2070.

Skynet
For those who haven’t watched Terminator, Skynet is the self-aware AI system that viewed human as its existential threat and deployed a nuclear holocaust along with Terminator army to destroy the human race. 19065 people who signed the open letter by the Future of Life Institution, including, but are currently not limited to, 2810 AI/Robotics Researcher Signatories and 16255 Other Endorsers, are joined by their effort to stop the real version of Skynet - AI weapons. While the AI in weapons offer the reduction in casualties during war, the concerns remain reasonable as AI weapons don’t need rare and expensive material or easy-to-detect experiment like atomic bombs. AI weapons can actively seek and destroy targets that they view as hostile. Hence, should anyone push for the development of AI weapons or the AI arms race, it will much resemble the Kalashnikovs (author of AK-47) of tomorrow. Plus, reducing the cost of war lowers the threshold of going to war and poses a bigger question of controlling the weapon.

b o s s In the field of employment, AI is part of the bigger automation process that kicked off since the industrial era. Back then, we viewed machine as autonomous and diligent workers: machines freed us from dirty and dangerous work of manual labor in cotton plantation, textiles, and transportation. Next, they start to take up dexterous chores: mopping the floor, cleaning the window, and washing the clothes. Remarkably, in smart homes, the house can adjust itself to the owner’s preference down to small details like how cooked the rice should be, how cold each area is, how much light is needed at particular hours and so forth. Subsequently, information-intensive positions are getting replaced by machines: Narrative Science offers Quill - a program that can generate narrative analysis from relevant data to craft clear and concise analysis and produce decision-making-useful insight. Yes, in the near future – when AI is still struggling to catch up with human level intelligence, there are still roles for human to play in the future as Thomas H. Davenport and Julia Kirby have proposed in Harvard Business Review in June. But that is for short run, and employers love AI, who is very reliable, predictable, indefatigable, easy to teach, and incredibly cheap. Employers can also retrain the robots for different tasks and it’s relatively easy since no programming is needed. Consider the robot Baxter, he is the result of general purpose machine: he can perceive his surroundings, avoid collision with humans, be trained through guiding of his limbs. Plus, Baxter is incredibly cheap – $25,000 compared to average industrial specialized robots that cost around $500,000 over their lifespan.
Creative work, though praised as the safe haven for human as it features the unique and supreme trait of us: creativity, is also under threat of AI invasion. Creativity is often regarded the unique process that separated from ordinary thinking and cannot be formulated, analyzed or reconstructed. Some says creativity needs absolutely no directional guidance, no constraint, criticism or bounded scope. The reality can be harsh: think your creative work is unique? Northwestern University in Illinois, US already developed AI for media outlets to draft articles in everyday English from data received over the Internet. That is why less than three minutes after the mild earthquake in LA, the story already popped up on LA Times. A recent ads survey showed 89% of award winning ads have 6 common regularities (templates). Fortunately, while non-template matched human ideas are ranked the worst, template-matched ideas by human is still ranked higher than that by AI. Randomness or non-replicable creative sparks are still of importance as many of the innovations by human in the past is by accident. Employment of AI workers also poses another question of inequality because, without the government’s effort to ensure better distribution of wealth, most of the profits would go to bots’ owners. Predicting the application of AI as an employee is almost impossible: when iPhone was launched in 2005, who would have thought it would endanger taxi industry with ride-sharing apps?

The
new
bible:
Human creates God. Gary Marcus – cognitive science professor at NYU said we might achieve human level AI at the end of this century – as soon as AI become capable of self-aware and obtain volition. AI, as stated above, can just “fly past us” after that. Some people say “singularity’ is centuries away, some say it’s within decades. Nevertheless, how long is not as important as how things will play out. While Nick Bostrom worries about the future where AI destroy human, there is also possibility of the pink “Singularity” where immortal human live in harmony with machines as suggested by the futurist Rey Kurzweil. If AI is so dangerous why don’t we all just stop developing it altogether? Because there is always incentive for companies and organizations to pour dollars into research of super-intelligence. In fact there is already lots of funding poor into the field of AI and there are more AI researchers working to achieve the human level AI and not enough people are working to make sure we are not harmed by AI. Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and actor Ashton Kutcher just put $40 million dollars to Vicarious FPC who develops artificial brain. It’s funny when almost all of the article about the danger of AI feature the Terminator, showing we are still using human’s mindsets to think about AI. First, the danger of AI lies not within what it is physically attached to like guns or rockets, but in its mind. We may put AI in a box, disconnect the Internet and only communicate with it from texts on the screen. However, communication opens up vulnerability: if the chimps lock us in cage, we would have anticipated threats and found the way out thanks to our superior intelligence. Shutting it off is no answer because first, we might grow dependent on it like social networks nowadays and second, how could we contain something that is genuinely smarter than us? The more intelligent the AI, the more efficient it is at doing the task. Nick Bostrom joked about a stapler making machine that use up all the metal on earth to make stapler. Therefore, in the scenario that we are not capable of containing a general purpose AI, the better solution is to incorporate human values to the AI research, teaching it benevolent concerns for others, contemplation, taste of refined culture and such in hopes that our God will treat us the way we want. Finally, given this possibility of AI application and dangers, we should totally be reaching for more safety net or fail-safe mechanism rather full-throttling towards “Singularity”.

Flight Flig htofofImagination Imaginat ion POETRY CORNER
By Ian Villanueva
My mind wants to write, My mind is in thought, It thinks quite a lot.
Yet light as a feather, It sorts out its pick,
When it’s tired it’s not, It never ends with a dot,
Once woken comes true,
At day it’s asleep, At night it seems to sweep, It thinks of all sorts. It’s vast and it’s wide, It just can never hide, Surprise, here it pops, Never does it stop.
It is very fast, Whose actions all last? It might get exhausted, But that is alright, It gets rejuvenated, By a long quiet night. It falls asleep and gets awoken, Only to fall back asleep again, It dreams of imagination, Yet beyond expectation.

A breeze comes to visit, It has no limit, And neither do you. Rain drops from the sky, As cold wind turns to snow. A circular motion, By thought-caused commotion, In the shrieks of panic, Heat comes from the attic. A breezy wind comes through to bring peace, It calms the mind and freezes the wind, It digs up and throws all minded sin. Strong winds wisp and whistle but never be shaken, All things that are written comes from each one’s minds, It seeks everyday the truth that it’s promised, From here to there all morning to evening, In dreams that are forgotten, that’s where the truth is,
