Name’s Zen. Zen’s a dog. Zen’s a Boxer. Zen loves Ruby. Zen is Ruby’s baby. BUT ZEN IS NOT A BABY. ZEN’S 7! Zen loves having fun. Zen runs around, rolls around and plays hide-and-seek with Ruby. I miss mom. Once Zen asked her “Why our names Boxer?” “Dear, it’s simply because we do boxing. Your granddads stood up and punched others to protect their family. Best of us Boxers have white paws like a real pair of boxing gloves” she smiled. “Mommy, I have the white paws”, “Honey, grow up to be the best!”
Zen wonders why Olympics never have Boxers. We are very athletic but never got a chance, even during the last Olympics in our granddads’ home country. Zen can be trained to do almost anything. Many of Zen’s cousins were Hollywood stars. We can’t just be left alone, we always need something to do and someone to play with. Zen felt lonely and got sick once cuz Ruby didn’t play with her. Zen visits the vet every year. Still, Zen is afraid of scary needles. Zen doesn’t want to go. Zen likes to exercise and play!

“Obama received criticism from Romney’s Republican colleagues for loaning money to a communist country. Obama defended successfully under the Export Import Bank Act because it was in the interests of not only Vietnam, but the US as well, with Lockheed Martin profiting from the investment in Vietnam.”
1951: Australia, New Zealand and the US became formal allies by signing the ANZUS treaty. NZ and Australia assisted the US in military operations in Malaysia, Korean and Vietnam. 1984: The declaration of New Zealand as a ‘nuclear free zone’ virtually precluded all US naval warships from visiting New Zealand and led to the US suspending its obligations under the ANZUS treaty.
“In New Zealand and Australia it would be hard to see a place on the political spectrum for either a Republican millionaire Mormon venture capitalist like Mitt Romney, or a Democratic constitutional law lecturer with a poor throwing arm such as Barack Obama.”

Although this may be a momentous choice for the American people, Vietnamese citizens may wonder how each respective candidate, if elected, would introduce policies that impact Vietnam’s national economy as well as its regional and international trade and political relations.

“If you are not willing to stand up to China, you will get run over by China, and that’s what’s happened for 20 years”, Romney charges. The GOP nominee has said he will use the office of President to promote the Trans-Pacific Partnership Pact (which would include Vietnam) to act as a counterbalance to rising Chinese power. However, Romney has also said that if elected he will cut the foreign aid budget to both the UN and the World Bank, through which Vietnam has benefited directly over the last 10 years by receiving funding of $14 billion, with another $16 billion pledged to be delivered in the future for more robust market economy and better governance. While Romney’s interest in using Vietnam as a proxy to combat the surging power of China may benefit Vietnam in the short term, his stated goal of slashing vital funds to a vibrant and growing Vietnamese economy could slow Vietnam’s ascension to the rank of developed nation. Mitt Romney, as a founder of the private equity firm Bain Capital building his claim to the US presidency largely on his successful business career, has no foreign policy history in his long résumé. However while Mr. Romney has not directly addressed Vietnam and its relationship with America in public speeches, he has promised repeatedly to aggressively confront China on issues concerning trade policies he alleges violate WTO agreements such as China’s currency manipulation. Romney argues that China not only has effectively exploited the economies of
intellectual property rights by continuing to engage in patent and copyright infringement in producing counterfeit products invented and developed by American manufacturers. All these he argues negatively impact the American economy.
The incumbent President is also a proponent of the TransPacific Partnership, and moved to include Vietnam in trade negotiations. Hillary Clinton’s participation in the Association of South East Nations Regional Forum held in Hanoi in 2010 exemplified the commitment the Obama administration places on enhancing economic ties between the US and Vietnam, and that regional disputes over island territories such as the Paracel Islands (Hoang Sa) must be done according to multilateral talks among nations with respect given to all claimants.
Vietnam. Like Romney but not as aggressive, Mr. Obama sees China as a growing threat in Asia and has invested resources to dampen China’s expansionist aspirations. Recently, in a dispute over conflicting territorial claims over islands in the South China Sea, the Obama administration sent a strong message by increasing military cooperation among nations, with the Vietnamese and American Navies holding joint manoeuvres off the Vietnamese coast near Danang. Obama has further invested in the security and economy of Vietnam by authorizing Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to loan VNPT $126 million for television and telecommunications satellites manufactured by American defence contractor Lockheed Martin (ironically also manufactured military gunships such as the AC-130 used in Vietnam War).

For the last generation US election campaigns have been viewed in New Zealand and Australia with an eye on the possible effect on trade relations. Here’s an example. At the end of a questionnaire about social problems: “What are your recommendations to improve this situation?” Small chance that this question is answered. From a survey on customs services I did 3 years ago, only about 5 out of 100 are answered. So easy keeping silent instead of saying something not-so-smart. So easy saying ‘up to you’ instead of thinking of a strong argument. Will we do so if our friends ask for advice, if the employer asks for a salary negotiation, if parents ask us to enroll in a program we don’t like or marry someone we don’t love? Why?
Traditionally from an economic view point New Zealanders have favoured a Republication president due to a perceived higher likelihood of a reduction of trade barriers affecting the entry of primary produce to the lucrative American market. New Zealand exporters in particular viewed Democratic candidates with suspicion since Democrats are more likely to protect American primary producers. In reality over the last 2 decades despite the US being the self-proclaimed champion of free trade, neither a Republican nor a Democratic president has made any move in progressing towards a reduction of US trade barriers and opening up the large US consumer market to primary produce from New Zealand. Interestingly, Australia through its closer political relations with the US signed a free trade agreement with the world’s largest power in 2004. But much to the Australian governments chagrin the agreement has in fact resulted in a decrease in Australian exports to the US and an increase in Australian imports from the US.

Currently many pacific nations are content keeping both China and the US in close contact. If China and the US do enter a period of hostility, pacific nations fear being forced by the US administration to take sides in any dispute thus losing the benefits the current stalemate provides. This fear dictates that pacific nations keep a close eye on US policy in the pacific, and in turn on the US presidential election. Certainly the hawkish statements directed at China by the Republican nominee Mitt Romney are making some in the region, including South East Asia, understandably nervous. I used to be a sycophant. Since childhood, I was told to keep my mouth shut if adults were talking. At school, I was told stupid for my original ideas and was told good for repeating exactly what teachers said. At home I was told good for keeping silent and was told spoiled for arguing for what I thought was right. Eventually, I was talked into hiding my own opinions and going along with the crowd. But I changed. Now I realize we no longer live in Gallileo’s times. Our friends all over the world made it their habit to exchange viewpoints long ago. My co-workers in LSU often ask for my opinions and share their opinions on anything of concerns. On the Opinion Pages on New York Times, everyone are free to express their opinions, from a university professor, a businessperson, a fund manager, an educator to a ninth grade student. So… Speak out! Voice your opinions! Words don’t bite! P/S: By the way, with question “What do you want to read in the next issue of Current Magazine”, instead of leaving it blank, “I want more opinion exchange on this students’ magazine.”

Are we happy with all these “whatever”? Are you? I am not. Because if I don’t make an opinion on small questions, I believe I’ll become less responsible for and make fewer attempts to pose opinions on bigger ones.

“Beware the stare of Marry Shall, She has no child but only the dolls, If you see her in your dream,
This Halloween.
Be sure you ever never scream.”
Thank GOD for no more bad Saw movie sequels. Let’s celebrate the occasion with Dead
Silence, a movie by Saw’s original creators James Wan and Leigh Whannel.
Wan and Whannel, RMIT Melbourne graduates with degrees in Media Art, had worked together since they were like us. After playing small roles in movies like The Matrix Reloaded (2003), they launched their first movie in 2004, Saw. After successes of Saw, Saw II and Saw III, Dead Silence was their next project. Dead Silence is not as bloody, but after watching, you’d be scared of any sudden silence. “When everything suddenly falls into mystic silence, the soulless, wooden eyes of an emotionless dummy turns around and look at you and then, you become a flesh dummy without tongue.”

Movie review
The movie starts with a mysterious present sent to Jamie Ashen (Ryan Kwanten) and his wife Lisa (Laura Regan). The present is a small coffin with a dummy inside from unknown sender. The couple doesn’t care much and jokes about deaths of dummy owners. But they don’t even know the dummy is the trigger for their tragedy. Going home after buy-
This Halloween Let me hear you scream in silence ing dinner for Lisa, Jamie is horrified to find the corpse of his wife with completely distorted mouth and lost tongue. Losing his beloved and becoming police’s number one suspect, Jamie has to prove his innocence by finding the true murderer by himself. A dummy, a dead body and a tongue taken away… those make Jamie think about the urban legend of Marry Shaw casting curses on the owners of her dummies. Jamie decides to return to his home town, where the story of Marry Shaw’s curse unfolds. Differently from Saw series, Wan and Whannel do not use too much blood in the movie to instil fear. The biggest failure of Saw series as a horror franchise is that it does not cause “true fear”. No scene startled people, story line is too simple, who is going to die is obvious, just blood and gore. However, in Dead Silence, right in the first scene, when silence surrounds the room, the dummy slowly turns its head and silence is broken by a woman’s scream. Unlike other horror movies about killer dummies, Dead Silence’s dummy has no soul. It just sits there, silently looks at the victims and waits for their scream then kills them with a knife. If you’re bored with murder scenes with lots of screaming, blood and gore and seek some changes, Dead Silence is for you. The movie’s OST is interesting and well suited with its dark-tragedy theme but its casts’ performance is a major let down in crucial moments. For example, Jamie looks so calm when he sees his dead wife and flesh-dummy father. The detective assigned to Lisa’s murder case is supposed to disturb Jamie’s investigation but he rarely appears, does crazy nonsense things and dies in a ridiculous way. Despite the bad reviews and poor performance of the casts, this movie is good to watch if you look for “mind-attack” horror movie.

Races for the Titles
Bundesliga: New kids on the block
Sport report
The high-profile transfer of Shinji Kagawa from the champion Dortmund may make some people write off Bundesliga as 2nd rate league. Admittedly Bundesliga has nothing interesting in particular like the physical EPL, the technical La Liga or even the tactical Serie A. But it is a league that supports its German players the most. Many people thought MU’s purchase of Kagawa would leave Dortmund devastated like Real Madrid’s of Ozil in 2010 did with Werder Bremen. However, the move was calculated. Dortmund already has a potential replacement in Mario Gotze and to ensure even more, they brought another rising young star Germany’s Player of the year 2012, Marco Reus. Both had a great showing in the recent Euro 2012 while being only 23. If you think Ozil is already good enough, wait till how far these 2 go. Dortmund’s strongest challenger also does not look like they are going down without a fight. Already beaten Dortmund 2-1 in Super Cup showdown, Bayern is looking to improve upon what brought them to the second place in Champions League losing only to Chelsea. Besides the superb performance of the recent acquisition Croatian sensation Mario Mandzukic, Germany’s Thomas Mueller and Toni Kroos also showed great improvement by competing for a starting place with and also learning from French Ribery and Dutch Robben. However, despite the abundance in offense, particularly in midfield, Bundesliga clubs as well as Germany does not seem to have any reliable back four. Mat Hummels of Dortmund lack experience especially during the first goal scored by Italy during Euro. Phillip Lahm is more attack-oriented than defensive, Badstuber is Loew’s most trusted defender but still struggles with aerial battles. Thus the upcoming Bundesliga competition will feature a lot of fight for possession in midfield and lots of goals. But watch out for Bayern, they have made to 2 of the last 3 Champions league finals. And with the easy table they got in with only Valencia as a potential threat, they may as well do it again.

V- League: Vietnamese? Who Vietnamese?
Differently from Bundesliga where home grown players are given most chances, our domestic V-league focuses more on foreign physical players. Our 2012 top goal scorer was Timothy, the closest challenger is Merlo who did not play the last 6 games due to hamstring injury. And finally a Vietnamese player appears on top of the goal scoring chart at 3rd place: Kesley Alves! Oh wait... Not only the position of forward is being dominated by foreign players, but also is the position of center backs and center midfielders. And if it’s not for the limitation law, there might have been no native player in the starting 11. However, all those are not going to last long. Currently clubs are turning to the foreign players for shortterm success instead of long-term investment. Foreign players are physical, fast and experts in aerial battles. However, their basis is only average. T&T’s Van Quyet, a very quick player with really good basic passing and dribbling skill; Hanoi’s Thanh Luong, a small player with big vision, great positioning and one-touch skill; and they are only few of many potential Vietnamese rising football stars. As today’s football is shifting toward possession based style (as in the cases of Germany, Spain or Barcelona), Vietnamese potential stars will prove to be important assets of any V-league team as long as there is proper long term investment in raising talents throughout the country.
And even better if they spend more time in the gym. Watch out, V league 2013, or even before that, November 2012 AFF Suzuki Cup will feature some very talented and physical Vietnamese players you’ve never seen before.

The story of me The story of SIFE
I
was so lucky to be one of the very few people who witnessed the birth of SIFE RMIT Hanoi. At that time, being a freshman, I was like SIFE - young, dreamy, enthusiastic and ambitious. After only 2 months, Eco-Bag project was established with my unconcealed pride of the first time to set up my own project. However, not until the winter in 2010 that we have the very first contract, after 2 failed attempts of

negotiations, 5 times changing suppliers, more than 60 bag samples in different sizes and shapes, and after not just a few times crying on the dinner table when my father kept repeating: “Stop bringing trashes home!”. Our 11-memberteam completed 2000 bags within 20 days, which felt like a miracle. I never forget the image of collecting banners with others members from early morning at My Dinh Stadium, or the drizzly days when my team mate went to the factory to check the progress all by herself. I remember so clearly the day that we were exhausted after running around to collect each piece of wasted banner at Giang Vo fair till 11pm. Such silly, yet beautiful time.. Surprisingly, I became the president in the spring of 2011, after hearing the announcement that: "If no one volunteers to lead, we will dissolve before the start of this semester." It was such difficult days for SIFE: only 10 members left, 8 of whom had just finished their first semester, one stuck project. There was no money left in our fund. In 2 days, I silently listened to "the warning" from RMIT and SIFE representatives, that if there was no progress in the next three months, our club would be dissolved. I couldn’t sleep in the third day; I cried my heart out because of anxiety, of the regret that I had taken such huge responsibility and of the guilty towards the people who had trusted us. In that time, where did 10 of us get that much strength and dedication, I still haven’t figured out yet… But I have never forgotten these days that we had the executive meetings until late evening, or the day when our official facebook homepage of SIFE was up, we pasted the link on each and every one’s walls in our friendlist, just with the expectation that our site would surpass 100 “likes”. I’m grateful for those young souls that had dedicated so much for SIFE at that time. I still remember the shy boy who "wrote a mail in English" to “asked” to join SIFE. I still remember the girl who was hesitate to nominate herself as the next president, and now she is shining so much in her position. The thing I remember most is the feeling when Van – a “people in need” of SIFE thanked us so gratefully. I realized that the meaning of everything we do simply lie in that sincere thank-you-sentence.
the "SIFE works" that I’m proud of most. Finally I could keep my promise: "I will not let anyone who is unprepared to take on SIFE”. With shining faces and ambitious plans, I know that our “career” will soon blossom It also took a long time for me to get along with a nonSIFE life. No more endless meetings, no more long mail list, no more full schedule… Sometimes, sitting quietly looking at Ngoc Khanh Lake, I could not help but sigh. It’s like the feeling when you leave someone you have been with for so long: down, lost and disorientated… But whenever I see the yellow shirts of SIFE, my heart still beats excitedly. And I have never stop thinking about SIFE with pride in my eyes. I can see that SIFE is still young, still warm and enthusiastic just like before. I know that my SIFE is still there… The first time I received the hand written letter from a SIFE boy who studied overseas, I smiled by those lines: "I miss those days in SIFE, and I miss you so much ..."
about the news through the phone, I see the graduated member calling me: “How is SIFE this year?”, I remember those winter days when we delivered banners to the factory. I miss those noons when we could just silently look at each other, feeling hopeless. I hear myself crying when hearing the news that National Competition 2011 would not be held. And I can also see those moments, when we would just sit without talking, in a moment to think about SIFE, and feel so empathy…
And just yesterday, I cried like a child in happiness after hearing the news that our SIFE won the national competition. I have dreamt of that moment so many times during my SIFE days But it was not as loud and noisy as I had imagined. Strangely, everything came to me like a slow motion film: I see the boy shouting happily while telling me
SIFE is now Enactus
At that time, I was craving for, not the sparkling golden cup, but the warm hug from all the SIFE people that have walked with me in this road. I also realized that this is not victory happiness This is the serenity and peacefulness while closing a happy ending fairy tale, when I know that, at the end of that sunny road, there are still people holding hands tightly..
