The Inaugural Carmen Ministries “Break into Education” 10K Race Thanksgiving Day 2010 Dear Friend, Who we are: Carmen Ministries is a non-profit volunteer organization with the goal of providing a pathway of hope to juvenile offenders. “Break into Education” is one of Carmen Ministries programs for those pursuing their dream of obtaining a secondary education and ultimately becoming a positive, responsible, contributing adult. What we are doing: To provide funds to these young people for secondary education, Carmen Ministries is hosting the “Break into Education” 10K Race on Thanksgiving Day 2010. www.carmenministries.com/events Why we are contacting you: We need your support, by becoming an event sponsor. See the attached schedule to determine your level of sponsorship participation. Why your support is important: The odds are against these teens. With your support, Carmen Ministries is there to help level the playing field. • 94% of the young people in juvenile institutions have never had a relationship with a positive adult role model. • Over 90% of the juvenile offenders don’t have a father active in their life. • The majority of the youth involved with Carmen Ministries have never had a family member attend any secondary education.

For these youths to beat the odds, we are convinced that effective aftercare is key to their success to realize their dreams. A key part of this aftercare is secondary education. Once released, schooling helps our young people establish positive ties in the community and gives them the skills needed to get jobs and start productive lives. Without this education the road of life is very difficult. Money raised from this fundraiser is used to defray college or trade school costs. Without your support our youth will be forced to return to their communities without additional schooling. And without this education milestone, statistics prove that our youth are destined to return to the corrections system.

The Inaugural Carmen Ministries “Break into Education” 10K Race Thanksgiving Day 2010 How the process works: Everyone needs help at some point in life. Carmen Ministries’ involvement begins while these young people are housed in juvenile institutions. These teens voluntarily choose to attend weekly group meetings where they share their past and discuss their future with a volunteer from Carmen Ministries. We encourage youth to take advantage of the GED opportunities and other avenues available to them to complete their high school degree. We also encourage them to participate in secondary educational opportunities while they are incarcerated. We don’t stop there. We continue mentoring and supporting these young people after they are released with a push toward more schooling. Getting teens ready for school is no small task! Our young people need help completing school applications, taking school tours, getting medical exams, getting immunizations, getting funds, getting jobs, and receiving continuous encouragement in order to be able to enter the school setting. It’s a big job, and it is very rewarding. Let me share just a few success stories with you. Michael: Mike embraced the guidance given to him by Carmen Ministries while he was incarcerated. When he was released we used the “Break into Education” model to get him into vocational school for motorcycle repair and helped him heal his family life. Today Michael works in auto repair and plans to open his own motorcycle repair business. Tony: Carmen Ministries provided the guidance and life direction that Tony never received from his parents. With our help, Tony went on to complete his High School education, graduating with honors. We continued mentoring him after high school, providing financial support for college tuition and books. He has received his bachelor’s degree and is pursuing his master’s. Because of his hard work and the support of dedicated Carmen Ministries volunteers who have a long-term commitment to coaching him about the corporate world, Tony's career progressed to the management level in a large telecommunications company.

Please contact me to discuss your support for this event. Thank you for joining us in directing these young people toward positive life choices. Sincerely,

James Hoyt Carmen Ministries Operations Director jhoyt@hsreports.com
