The 2nd Annual Totowa PAL 5K/10K Road Races, brought to you by (Diamond Event Sponsor, TBD) are set for October 24th of this year. Support of this event will assist the PAL in fostering its athletic programs to the children of the Totowa community by providing some much needed facilities and infrastructure maintenance. In order to “bid” the required maintenance the Totowa PAL must fundraise as a means of generating the dollars needed to insure the ongoing safety of the facilities and the programs they rely on. This includes, but is not limited to, the PAL building itself, whose roof is in need of significant repair/replacement. Proceeds collected through this road racing event will be earmarked for this and other underpinning projects spread across the next several years. More details on these projects can be located as part of the event sponsorship package (levels) provided or by contacting Kevin Barnes of the Totowa PAL Board of Directors. The PAL Road Races, since its inaugural running a year ago, have been well received, thanks to the supportive community. The PAL, however, still has a long way to go. With the communities continued focus and attention on this event it will surely become the fundraising staple the PAL families and its programs require. Focused as a family friendly affair, the PAL Road Races encourages all PAL members, 10 & older to run the 5K with their parents while the younger children participate in the Kid’s Fun Run. The Kid’s Carnival following the road race award’s ceremony is also well positioned for an afternoon of fun. The following schedule will be in affect for the day’s events and should make for a most enjoyable fall family outing: 8:00-9:30am 10am 11:20am 11:40am 12:00pm 6pm
5K/10K Registration 5K/10K Simultaneous Start Awards Ceremony Kid’s Fun Run Kid’s Carnival Event Closes
The Kids Fun Run is open to all children 9 & under. The Kids Carnival will commence shortly thereafter. Many of our supportive local businesses will be on hand to add to the event festivities. The Race Committee suggests you make the day of it, bring the family, stick around and have some fun with the Totowa community and its sponsors. As one can tell from its name, this event boasts two USATF New Balance Grand Prix (please check www.usatfnj.org for additional details) road racing events. The 5K (3.1 mile) course is a single loop through the streets of Totowa which surround the PAL Building and its recreational fields/areas. Both road
courses have been redesigned in 2010 to be elevation dropping. If you’re in the hunt for that elusive PB, this could be it!!!! With the redesign, the road race participants will have a short walk up Lincoln Avenue to the top of Stanford Court. Then it’s a fast run downhill. Walkers are welcome to participate in the 5K, however will not be permitted in the 10K given the time constraints associated with the day’s events. The 10K (6.2 mile) course will continue as a second loop over the 5K. The 10K redesign has removed the Boyle Avenue hill and replaced it with a short and sweet “uptick” on Lincoln before descending through the 5K course a second time. The ability to start one event and finish the other remains a race-time decision. The simultaneous start will receive a marshaled escort by the Totowa Police department with ample support from the Fire, DPW and EMS Departments. Each event will be awarded up to 500 New Balance Grand Prix points to its USATF participants. It should be noted that the USATF is a strong supporter of all New Balance Grand Prix (NBGP) events. Runners come from far and wide to compete on courses that showcase their talents and abilities. It is the objective of the Totowa PAL Race Committee to eventually bid for inclusion in the NBGP as a Championship. This could attract an even larger contingency of runners to the event over the next couple of years establishing it not only as a local, but a USATF-NJ staple event.
The Kids Fun Run (9 & Under) course is roughly a third of a mile around the PAL field along the paved running track. Parents are encouraged to run alongside their children. All youth participants will be awarded. The jam packed Kid’s Carnival will feature blow up slides, games of chance, local business support and plenty of food and fun to carry everyone through a cool Fall afternoon. All local businesses will be asked to provide a kid friendly activity to attract the parents and children in attendance to their respective sponsorship area.
To ensure the word gets out, the Totowa PAL Road Race Committee will be actively canvassing the NJ road racing scene starting in late August. Flyers (below) will be placed on race tables and in event bags to ensure the “running” community is well informed of this event. Additionally an advertisement will be placed in the Sept/Oct issue of RaceForum(.com), which most consider to be the multi-sport event bible, to ensure coverage across all road racing events in NJ, Eastern PA, Southern NY and parts of Connecticut.

A community mailing will be sent out in support of the event while a series of email blasts will be targeted to 2000+ Passaic County Runners. This media blitz will be supported by the Passaic County Race Directors Coalition of which Ross Mistretta, our co-director is both the founder and President. (www.pcrcnj.org). The Totowa PAL Board of Directors are committed to those that support their efforts. The Totowa PAL and its members welcome your suggestions as it’s only with your involvement that the event will be able to evolve to a level needed to support our efforts/programs. Please convey your expectations to us and we’ll work closely with you, our sponsor, to ensure that the event is as lucrative for you, as we expect it to be for the PAL.
