BUSTED! The Monsters from a classic 80’s arcade game came to Portland to pull their shenanigans here (as if we don’t already have a housing crisis). They were eventually subdued, and now must perform community service to rebuild what they destroyed. Watch them put their massive scale to good use in a time lapse projected on the PGE Building near OMSI. Plus, since we need to fill those buildings, attendees are invited to come play with assorted props and see their silhouettes appear in the newly created buildings. Lumenal Code is the collaborative project of Dan Cohen and Gabe Shaughnessy. Since 2006 they have been creating multimedia installations and interactive art around the country. Their work emphasizes the nexus between Fine Art and Digital Interactivity to create a next-level experience that dazzles and inspires.

Interactive manipulation of light, shadow and form; the intent is to allow an individual to empower their surrounding in hopes that others will be inspired by a divergent interpretation of space. Designed to undergo a metamorphic process upon human interaction, foldable surface panels allows the installation to be expressed in a closed static or open dynamic state. In 2016, ZGF created a series of Wayfinding Towers for the Portland Winter Light Festival. The towers, assembled through a balance of tension and floating compression, were placed along the eastside esplanade to run the full scope of the festival, providing a reference point at any location. Each tower is roughly 20 feet tall and composed of conduit metal pipe and steel cable. All towers are accompanied by four smaller pilons and feature white animated lights to connote the experience of lightning. Since 2016, the Wayfinding Towers have been featured as installations at Portland’s Indigo @ Twelve | West building and at Burning Man. My work revolves around global folk tales told in a public setting. I use the universality of storytelling to show that while surface appearance can vary, at the core we have more in common with each other than we realize. The transformation tale I am currently exploring, The Swan Maiden, has a variant in Japanese, Serbian, Turkish, Welsh, Chinese, Romanian, Pakistani, Swedish, German, as well as a chapter in 1001 Nights. The first prototype of a series of turn crank toy theaters is in the image above and shows a scene from the Chinese tale, The Peacock Maiden. The second prototype will be created for this festival, and in the Summer I will be showing all 10 of the finalized toy theaters concurrently in the Greater Seattle region. Special thanks to Arts-A-Glow Festival for commissioning the first prototype, and Rob Lutz, Arts Technician to the Stars, who provided crucial mechanical support.

Progress requires change, but change will lead to places we’ve never conceived. How will the robots dreamed of in our recent past deal with reality as it unfolds. Here we have our robot, a hard working machine of craft and careful engineering. Like any other robot, our robot is wholly dedicated to its assigned tasks. But even fully dedicated, there will be downtime – time spent waiting for new instructions, or needed supplies, or perhaps even repairs. During downtime, a robot needs to plan ahead, get ready for the next task, and be ready to act. But a robot can also indulge its private interests. Here we see our robot pursuing its downtime interest with a little light gardening.

This installation has three forms of flames, illustrating some of the wonders of flames. Mankind has harnessed fire since before mankind was Mankind; we will continue to use it as long as we are tied to this mortal plane. The flames are of three types: one a constant flame to which viewers can ‘spritz’ solutions into the flame to make it change color. The solutions contain dissolved ions, which when heated give off colors of emission spectra. A second flame will dance in response to music. The viewer will have the option of choosing the music from an installed radio, or by plugging in their favorite music device (phone, Ipod, etc) . The third installation is an overhead Ruben’s Tube, where flames dance along the length of the tube in response to the musical notes traveling along the tube from one end to the other.

Artificial intelligence is projected to replace real stupidity in the near future. On the cusp of this change, we often find ourselves asking if the interaction we’re having is with a biological smartalek or just an awkward robot. Anyone with legos to rub together can make something to play with. Add robotics and you can make something that plays back. If the robot’s responses are a reaction to you, then you are really just playing with yourself via robot. Or vice versa. The goal of this roving art piece is to hone the viewer’s ability to perceive where hardware takes over and humanware leaves off. After all, AI will eventually outstrip humanity by every measure. On the upside, if programmed with sufficient whimsy, our robot overlords will at least let us play “chase the laser” every once in a while. If we behave. Thanks to Marty & Julia Nelson and Brad Yazzolino for inspiration.

Stoicheia by Lilli Szafranski and Jesse Banks is an homage to Earth’s earliest thinkers, Plato and Euclid, merging modern technology with the very foundations of mathematics, and dedicating it to the culture from which modern academia was born. A perfect dodecahedron, each side depicts the iconography of one of the Twelve Olympians, the major deities of the Greek pantheon. Stoicheia is, at its core, one of the five Platonic Solids, elemental shapes prominent in the philosophies of Plato and further described in the most famous books in all of mathematics, Euclid’s “Elements.” Whimsical images, centered in a stained-glass rosary design, remain static and unchanging, while 2,000+ LEDs continuously morph and change, making every moment unique. Vibrantly-colored digital stained-glass, Stoicheia combines classic antiquity with the state-of-the-art technology through the common thread of mathematics and geometry. Note: Stoicheia is taking the place of Virror.

In our primitive days, we relied upon light from the sun and the moons to tell us when to rise from sleep, harvest food and to seek shelter. When light was harnessed in the form of fire, we no longer had to rely upon the sun and moon for protection. Light provided a sense of safety and reinforced our values of community. As technology advances, the way we interact with light changes. Screens are demanding more of our attention; and while these advances in technology have helped put us in contact with people around the globe, our sense of community is disappearing. It is time for light to once again bring us together. People to People through light is an interactive experience where participants not only connect individually with light, but build the experience together. Progression from cool to warm light creates a layered experience that is revealed through participation.

Cameo No. 3 represents the intersection of music, touch, light and social interaction, where sound exploration becomes the genesis of art. The piece transforms DuPont’s Corian material into an atmospheric sculpture that allows a play of LED-driven light to glow through, while a sound system plays music through the piece via three touch-activated podiums so that individuals can conduct their experience by way of music and light. This unforgettable sensory exploration, originally installed at the 2017 Portland Winter Light Festival, and then at several more locations—including in Times Square during New York’s annual NYCxDESIGN celebration—was designed by ZGF and Portland-based firms Piano Push Play, dotdotdash and Uncorked Studios. Cameo No.3’s team is united by the notion of blending advanced materials and technology with nature, warmth and human touch— and making their work accessible to all. ZGF Architects is a design firm with a focus on architecture, interior design and urban design. ZGF’s in-house fabrication shop utilizes the latest tools and a turnkey approach to create custom art, interactive media and unique solutions that incorporate emerging technology and techniques.

Colorful Life - Personal Portland Projections A collaboration between The Society Hotel and artist Jen Fuller connects light, life, and history to the hospitality experience. 38 hotel bed lamps have been converted for projection of the hotel staff’s personal Portland portrayals. Guests are invited to participate by coloring the curated projection filters. Fostering an interactive and colorful experience that perpetuates timelessness, connectivity, and community. Portland artist Jen Fuller blends the contrasting aesthetics of glass and steel to create sculpture she refers to as “totems for the soul.” Motivated by the technical challenges inherent in transforming materials with history into time based experiences, her work reflects the transparency and vulnerability found in humanity and nature. Fuller’s recent work has been commissioned by Metro Regional Government, Ovation TV, Pabst Blue Ribbon, Lan Su Chinese Garden and private collectors.

Ever wanted to be the size of a bug and walk around under some giant flowers? Well now you can! Psychedahlias are a bunch of giant colorful flowers that stand almost 12’ tall. Lined with fur and with petals and leaves made out of shiny fabric, these Jurassic-sized flowers have a spinning light in their center that cascades beams of colorful light all over the surrounding area. The lights are sound and vibration activated. They shut off after a short time and await someone to come by and tap the bright green leaves to start the visual display of illumination. TILIKUM CROSSING, BRIDGE OF THE PEOPLE – A NEW ICON FOR THE PORTLAND REGION THURSDAY FEBRUARY 1 @ 6:00PM
As part of TriMet’s public art program, artists Anna Valentina Murch (deceased in 2014) and her life partner Douglas Hollis envisioned a lighting system that would play across the Tilikum Crossing’s structure. In collaboration with architect Donald MacDonald, and structural engineer Semyon Treyger, the artists created a concept of dynamic lighting which would move along the cable stays, structural towers, and landside abutment walls. The lights change colors based on the Willamette River’s speed, height and water temperature. This data is collected by a U.S. Geological Survey river monitor, and specialized software translates it into movements of color and light across the bridge. At the Grand Opening celebration on September 15, 2015 the lighting system went live, full time…year round…through all the seasons. Robert Hastings, FAIA, TriMet’s Agency Architect, manages architecture, urban design, and sustainability aspects for Capital Project Division. He’s responsible for coordinating the Division’s architecture design, land use planning, station and urban design, signage and graphics, and integration of the art program. He also coordinates TriMet’s research and knowledge sharing activities with academic institutions, and coordinates knowledge sharing opportunities for visiting national and international delegations. Morgan Barnard as computer programmer and visual artist, pulled together the science, technology, and engineering into the realm of art. 92

THE NIGHT IS HABITAT THAT TEEMS WITH LIFE THURSDAY FEBRUARY 1 @ 7:30PM
Night is a mysterious time and place to most of us. Although life on our planet evolved under regular cycles of bright days and dark nights, the night we know is liberally colonized with artificial light. Most of us live in places that are awash in light —from billboards to parking lots to streetlights—even while the city sleeps. Today, 80% of North Americans live in places from which they cannot see our own home galaxy because of the fog of light pollution from lights that are neither beautiful nor useful. The darkness of night is important habitat for nocturnal species, and is home to millions of migrating birds, which rely on the moon and stars to navigate. The overabundance of light pollution has dire ecological consequences for fish and wildlife, plants, and human health and culture. Yet, we have all the tools we need to re-envision our approach to lighting design, to develop strategic new approaches to reducing light pollution while still crafting vibrant, beautiful, and safe nighttime cityscapes. Mary Coolidge is Audubon’s BirdSafe Campaign Coordinator, working with architects, planners and designers to reduce hazards for birds in the urban environment while meeting other design, building performance and climate change objectives. Mary is dedicated to improving efforts to make urban environments more hospitable to wildlife and helping connect people to nature and place right here in the city. Mary splits her time between Portland Audubon and the Oregon Zoo’s California Condor breeding program. WWW.PDXWLF.COM | #PDXLIGHTFEST

THE FUTURE OF LIGHT IS COMPUTATIONAL THURSDAY FEBRUARY 1 @ 9:00PM
WWW.MODELAB.IS
Computation is defined as the capacity of a system to evolve one state into another. This abstract concept underpins all aspects of our daily lives – in the natural world we navigate, the materials we touch, the technologies we use, and in our cultural behaviors and interactions. As we live each moment and move into the next, day turns to night, and light to dark. These rhythms and cycles are the literal embodiment of light as computation, allowing us to experience its extraordinary effects all around us. If this is light as we know it today, then how might light be experienced in the near future? This talk will present our studio’s journey of reimagining light through the collaboration of designers and algorithms for new ways of working and making. LIGHT: THE BRINGER OF KNOWLEDGE FRIDAY FEBRUARY 2 @ 7:30PM
This presentation covers the science and wonder of colored light. Light not only brings us wonder and amazement and lifts our spirits, it brings us knowledge about our surroundings. We use information coded in the nature of light itself to understand the history and nature of the Universe, and every visible object in it. Matter gives off light when excited, and the nature of the emitted light spectra tells us what the matter is, how it is moving in relation to us, how hot it is and how long ago it was emitted. With light, we can even discover the nature of hidden matter that can obscure light as it travels. Light, being eternal, will contain this information as long as the universe exists. Wonders exist, such as Einstein’s rings and Redshifts. If we can read the light, it will reveal its secrets to us. The secrets are all around us. We can now use High Voltage Electricity to produce our own man-made lightning, arcs, sparks, gas discharges and corona glow. In our demonstrations we use a 500,000 Volt Tesla Coil with 3 foot long arcs, a 300,000 Volt vacuum tube Tesla Coil (2 foot arcs) and other High Voltage discharge apparatus to illustrate the beauty inherent in the illumination created by the multiple branched high voltage arcs, sparks, and Corona glow. The equipment used will include 3 Tesla Coils, a 4 foot Jacobs Ladder, a 750 KV Van de Graaff generator, 100 KV Induction Coil, Wimshurst Machine, and Plasma Globes. The Tesla Coil was invented in 1890 by Nikola Tesla in an attempt to transmit power wirelessly around the world. The very high powers used will create intense Electromagnetic fields so, in an abundance of caution, people with implanted medical electronics should not attend.

Humans morph into animals, flowers grow to amazing proportions and dance a “ballet”, serpents and owls disembody and reassemble or fall and recover “matrix” style in the blink of an eye, while the EL wire backdrop creates an enchanted, ever-changing environment. Entertaining audiences world-wide with its unique blend of dance and technology, RDT presents over 50 public shows, 60-70 performances for youth and numerous residency programs throughout the US, Canada and Asia annually. FAQ
FAQ When is the festival? The Portland Winter Light Festival runs 6pm – 11pm, February 1 – 3, 2018 (Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights).
Where is the festival located? The festival takes place at locations across the city. Please refer to the map on pages 4-5 for an overview of festival locations. Maps for each individual Festival Hub can be downloaded at pdxwlf.com starting mid January, or you can pick one up from an Info Booth when you arrive.
Wait, most of the festival is outside during the winter? Yes! Isn’t that great? The festival is a reason to get out of the house and celebrate winter with the entire community. Please dress appropriately for Portland’s winter weather!
How do I get there? We encourage everyone to walk, ride, or take public transportation to our various festival locations. Portland Streetcar is completely free to ride on the nights of the festival, and BIKETOWN is offering 50% off day passes using the code LIGHTS18.
Is the festival free? Yes! All of the festival events are free and open to everyone. Please note that parking at OMSI costs $5.
Will there be food? Yes! We have food and hot beverages available for sale in our Hub A Food Courtyard across the street from the Oregon Rail Heritage Center.
Will OMSI be open? The lobby, restrooms, and Theory Eatery at OMSI will be open during the festival. Light Science Talks take place inside Theory Eatery at OMSI each night (see pages 92-100). 136 WWW.PDXWLF.COM | #PDXLIGHTFEST
FAQ
Can I bring my kids? Absolutely! The festival is family-friendly and has a number of interactive activities for people of all ages. We especially encourage families to participate in our Lantern Making Workshop (page 117) and our Lantern Parade at 7pm on Saturday, Feb 3 (page 119).
Can I bring my dog? The majority of the festival is outside on public land where you are welcome to bring your leashed pets. For festival events and exhibitions that take place inside, pets will not be allowed.
Can I dress up? Yes, please! In addition to dressing warmly for our winter weather, we always encourage attendees to participate by donning festive accessories. For sustainability concerns, we suggest avoiding single-use glowsticks (that you “crack to activate) and instead using reusable, solar- and battery-charged LED lights, el-wire (electroluminescent wire), and other light accessory options.
This festival is amazing! How do I get involved? We are always looking for volunteers! You can go to pdxwlf.com/volunteer to find out more and sign-up to help! If you are interested in participating as an Artist, we will be posting the call for 2019 submissions in the summer of 2018.
This festival is amazing! Can I give you money? Yes! The Willamette Light Brigade / Portland Winter Light Festival is a nonprofit organization. Our success is completely dependent on the generous support of our community. All donations are tax deductible, and help ensure that the festival will continue to thrill and inspire.
