WELCOME TO THE 5TH ANNUAL

PORTLAND WINTER LIGHT FESTIVAL: INTO THE DREAMSCAPE The Willamette Light Brigade is honored to present the incredible array of artists, performers, educators, and collaborators who have created these stunning works of art. This year, our artists have responded to the theme Into the Dreamscape and the art on display reflects an array of interpretations of this theme ranging from playfully prophetic fantasies to practical visions of creative alternative energy use, from surrealist immersive experiences to powerfully innovative technologies.

The festival has grown exponentially since it was founded in 2016, and this year’s event marks the 5th anniversary of this community-driven program. We are committed to providing access to art, design, and creativity to everyone by keeping the Portland Winter Light Festival free of charge. In order to do this, we are deeply grateful for the support of our sponsors, our incredible artists, our tireless volunteers, and our hard-working festival organizers. The Portland Winter Light Festival exists to build community while bringing light, art, and technology to inclusive audiences and invigorating Portland in the winter months. The Portland Winter Light Festival takes place along the banks of the Willamette River, and at locations throughout Portland. We strongly recommend taking public transportation to enjoy the festival events, which are centrally located for the streetcar, light rail, bus, and bike access. Many locations do not have physical addresses and are located in empty lots, parks, and unexpected areas. We hope you enjoy exploring Portland and seeing the city transformed by light. There is no one area to start or stop, and addresses are provided to get you close to the festival so that you can make your own route.

ILLUMINATED BIKE RIDE Friday February 7 The ride is free, open to everyone, and happens rain or shine! The Illuminated Bike Ride is co-hosted by Tomcat Bikes, Shift2bikes, and the Thursday Night Ride (TNR). Bring your bicycle, headlights, taillights, and your illuminated imagination. Deck your bike out in lights during the dark throes of winter, and dress appropriately for the weather. This flat, nearly-5-mile bike ride will ride through the many festival installations. This route has been carefully planned to be the perfect way to see the entire festival!

Musicals, dance, and aerial are seldom done when it’s time to light them. How do you bring beauty and focus to a show you know will change? Timing, technology, and that most elusive commodity — calm, can make the most dynamically shifting performance stay in light. Mark LaPierre is a lighting designer and programmer with a twenty year history of work in concerts, dance, theater, musical theater, and aerial. He has worked with Halcyon Shows, Pixie Dust Productions, Bodyvox, Night Flight, Pink Martini, Meow Meow, Portland Center Stage, Phoenix Tours, as well as many corporate apparel companies. He has programmed pre-Broadway musicals, EDM festivals, and even rooms he couldn’t see (which took too long).

CETI is convening a group of artists, technologists, architects, hackers, and engineers in January for a weekend of experiments - an an exciting collision of practices, expertise, and ideas to create interactive light and sound pieces, immersive experiences, and performances. Join us for the thrilling results. Details (on artists, works and sites) at ceti.institute.

Human light sensors (a.k.a. eyeballs) allow us to experience our environment in ways that we sometimes take for granted. It’s only when we are deprived of these light portals or we attempt to mimic their qualities that we can begin to understand how we are connected to light. In this talk, we will explore some of the characteristics of the vision as it relates to computer vision and making eyeballs for machines. Live and interactive demonstrations will be available for attendees. HooperFly is focused on creating dynamic and uplifting, technology infused, art.

CETI (a Creative and Emergent Technology Institute) offers a vision for lifelong learning and professional development, supporting a diverse and interdisciplinary community of practitioners, professionals, educators, students, and researchers to successfully create the future. We’ll examine where and why we have fallen short, and occasionally succeeded, in creating the world of our dreams; and we what can do to make this a more interesting place. A fascination with video games led me to start making code, art, and music when I was eight years old. More than three decades later, I find myself more curious about connecting to technology in novel and natural ways.

Sam Smith is an insurrectionary ecologist and opensource infrastructure advocate, working to build, improve and popularize open-source communityscale rapidly-deployable infrastructure systems that make it as easy as possible for people to meet their needs for food, water, shelter, energy, waste, and information as quickly as possible without ecological damage or disadvantage of anyone. In the French Revolution nobles were hung on them. In London they were intended as a deterrent to poor behavior, but increased it. In Austin, Texas they were so bright, homeowners had to close their blinds at night. This seemingly benign addition to our streets is a fascinating source of ongoing tension. We will explore these tensions and some fascinating alternatives to lighting our cities at night.

This lecture will explore the elegance of the visual systemâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ability to utilize light to create sight, and how light itself is being used to image the eye in health and disease. Dr. Lujan is an ophthalmologist and retina specialist at the Casey Eye Institute at Oregon Health and Science University.

Matt Eggert has worked in crime labs in both California and Oregon for more than fifteen years in the areas of: controlled substance analysis, biological screening, field investigations, latent print analysis, trace evidence analysis, and firearms databasing. He will be discussing how forensic scientists leverage the interaction of light with physical evidence in a multitude of ways to aid the criminal justice system.

Jeff Schnabel is the Director for the PSU School of Architecture, a member of the Willamette Light Brigade, and a co-founder of the Portland Winter Light Festival.

Eichinger Sculpture Studio / Koble Creative Collaborators: Martin Eichinger, Terry Amundson, Robbin Atherly, Dashiel Atherly, Suzanne Atherly, Walt Dimmick, Jillian St. Germain, Chas Martin, Melissa Meiners

Crystalis is a sculpture of acrylic, projected light and sound. Conceived by Portland sculptor Martin Eichinger and architect Terry Amundson, it combines form, light, sound and viewer imagination. It is about transfiguration and rebirth, a conceptual narrative addressing emergence and change. The 5 foot tall central pod of five translucent panels creates a 3D illusion of movement with projected light. Projections include a dancer and a series of abstract visuals. The hypnotic effect mesmerizes viewers as they walk around the structure. Eichinger Sculpture Studio creates sculptural experiences as bronze figures, science-based exhibits, and electronic installations. His sculptures inspire curiosity and dialog. Koble Creative emphasizes an integrated team-oriented approach within their architectural practice to produce immersive, functional experiences.

Ring of Fire

Wildstone Arts Collaborators: Mattress Thibault and Kelsey Wildstone, Andras Blake, Bobby Schiesz, Tom Franklin, Aimee Wildstone, Jessica Thibault, Nathaniel Wildstone Ring of Fire is a collaboration between Mattress Thibault and Kelsey Wildstone as part of the Wildstone Arts collective. The piece was built as a fusion of interactive fire and ambient light for Pacific Fire Gathering (PFG) in 2018, with a goal of scaling up to a larger system of flame effects. The piece features an array of ten individually controlled flame effects that can be activated by audience members, to produce delightful fireballs at the press of a button. Besides being interactive, the piece is designed to create an ambience of fire and light, as a backdrop for fire performance and dance.

Scott Keva James MindCloud is an exploration of synthetic visionscapes, dreamy compositions, which are directly affected by visitors. A cloud-like cluster of translucent panels floats just above eye level, exposing a moving visual composition, varying between pure abstraction and figurative imagery. As visitors wave their hands over control stations, the stream of imagery changes — shapes, colors, textures, sounds, and images churn in response — allowing some, but not total, control. Scott Keva James is a Seattle-based audio/visual artist who works primarily with found imagery and light to create interactive installations and live visual performances. He has a keen interest in time, texture and flow. In his work lyrical patterns emerge and slide along the continuum between organic and inorganic, nature and artifice, abstract and concrete.

Braille Constellation: Seeing in the Dark Kirsten Rian

640 LED puck lights are placed in a Braille pattern (each light is a Braille dot) to spell out a quote about celestial navigation and seeing in the dark, literally and metaphorically, from French World War II pilot and author Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Meaning is in our interpretation, which is informed by our abilities, access to our five senses, our prejudices, our hopes. How do we ‘see’ what’s there when we can’t rely on our first impulse or the buffer of familiarity. How do we interpret our world when things are dark or lost, how do we find light and understanding. Stars could be words; words could be stars; sky could be earth; you could be me. Kirsten Rian is an installation and light artist, painter, and writer and has been active in the national arts community for 25 years. She has been awarded numerous artist fellowships and grants.

Join us in this iconic 2020 year by giving your perspective on what ‘vision’ means to you. In the year 2020, we’re celebrating vision with The Eye Love Project, a large-scale traveling multimedia art installation. The exhibit consists of two larger-than-life eyes that will capture Oregonians’ perception of the importance of vision in our lives and culture. The Eye Love Project seeks to ask questions that inspire participants to reflect on how sight contributes to their quality of life and what vision means to them on a personal level — creating a vision census of Oregon. The Eye Love Project is made possible by OHSU Casey Eye Institute, whose mission is to eliminate preventable blindness and improve quality of life through leadership in the art, science, and technology of 21st century eye care.

The Eye Love Project

Strands of dreams appears like a curtain of glowing strands on the inside of a gateway. Pass through this curtain and walk into a dreamscape. This project suspends strands of LEDs like a curtain to pass through. Each strand can sense and react to motion by changing colors and playing sounds. Viewers are invited to touch and interact with the LED strands as they create a soothing feel of light and resonation. Fritz Koenig, Smit Shah, and Zao Naegele are all residents of Portland, Oregon, where they spend their time riding bicycles, critically thinking, learning, and creating.



Transforming Tic Tac Toe

Cap Crescent Synapse is an exploration of the intricate, everchanging web of connection that forms ourselves. It provides a glimpse of the interplay between self, place, stimulus, and altered states. Motion creates signals which travel through a web of dendrites, across synaptic connections, to the neuron cell body (soma) and finally out the axon to the rest of the neural web. Its shape changes with each installation in a new environment. Cap Crescent is a Portland-based designer, artist, programmer, and maker. Their favorite mediums are fabric, wood, leather, light, code, and environmental experience, but they also draw upon a lifetime of painting, drawing, and dreaming. Before Synapse, their largest work was a 7’ soft puzzle egg (Sunder Egg, 2016). Synapse is their first major electronics piece and debuted in May 2019 at SOAK, Oregon’s Burning Man regional event.

The DiscoBug combines the two most iconic symbols of the 60’s and 70’s — the VW Bug and the disco ball — and mashes them into one amazing interactive art installation. The DiscoBug features a user friendly control panel that allows anyone to be the lighting designer while classic disco music emanates from the spinning, mirror-covered Bug. Add a little fog into the mix and it is a explosion of light like no other! The DiscoBug was created by Tyler FuQua Creations for Light City light fest in Baltimore. TFC has been part of PDXWLF since the beginning and is excited to share their new creation with the people of Portland. Using a combination of reflective materials, lighting from the adjacent environment, and illumination from within. Nothing stays the same and everyone has a different reading of what they see in themselves and others around them. This world changes in every moment — this piece examines this by dancing, moving, shifting, and appearing different in every photo. Perception changes based on the angle it is viewed and the time it is viewed. Artist Ayla Leisure is a graduate of Portland State University. Creating and dreaming in her hometown — Portland, Oregon. Reflective materials and lighting are a large focus of her current practice, creating artwork centralized around identity and perception.

Clay McCabe is a fabricator and sculptor out of Portland, utilizing a wide variety of mediums to create bespoke handcrafted art pieces of various larger-than-life scale. His work is inspired by nature and mythology, invoking curiosity, interaction, and creating elemental synergy. He enjoys collaborating with others immensely. For these giant fungi, Eleanor Buell was co-creator and Yona Appletree programmed the lighting effects.

Mad Science is on a mission to spark the imagination and curiosity of children by providing them with fun, interactive, and educational programs that instill a clear understanding of what science is, and how it affects their world. Head in the Clouds

The dream world is a space suspended between reality and our subconscious — a world influenced by our past creating a new ambiguous reality. Our installation celebrates this ambiguity by allowing the user to manipulate their own reality. The dreamer enters the in-between space that separates itself from the outside world with physical walls. The space is defined by two fields of light. One field is a dynamic and interactive installation that can be manipulated by the dreamer. The second field is a reflection of that manipulation. Together the perception of the outside reality dissolves and the dream begins.

Even awake, we can move through life in a dreamlike state – with our heads in the clouds. Sometimes we want to disconnect; to be obscured from the world that we inhabit, even when we are physically surrounded by others. Participants will walk through the maze-like space, physically separated from other participants while they push aside layers of fabric, exploring a place where the boundaries are unknown, and their minds can wander. DLR Group is an integrated design firm. Our promise is to elevate the human experience through design. This inspires a culture of design and fuels the work we do around the world. Mihaly’s Gate was originally created for Pacific Fire Gathering - an annual movement arts / fire spinning skill share festival on the Oregon Coast. Notoriously known as Specific Fire Gathering, PFG is a nexus for highly talented and overachieving creatives. Case in point is the Art & Decor Team, who seemingly each year create a new art installation. Functionally, this piece acts as a gateway into the `Fire Circle` which houses hundreds of fire dancers each night of the festival. The structure is made of CNC cut metal and wood. It was durably designed and was stresstested at PFG two years ago when the festival was greeted by 50 mph winds and rains.

TVA Architects Collaborator: Catena Consulting Engineers Waking Reverie is a portal between consciousness and sleep, where objective reality blends with imagination and memory. Waking Reverie lulls the viewer into a mesmerized state as familiar sights morph into abstract expressions. Concrete objects are dematerialized while the vivid colors of dreams come to life. The installation features the reflection and refraction of light within a multi-layered octahedron. Using the principle of Pepper’s Ghost, the octahedron creates the illusion of a three-dimensional object, abstracted through multiple layers of transparent shapes. TVA Architects is a nationally recognized architectural, interiors, and planning design firm based in Portland, Oregon. Established in 1984 and rooted in the Pacific Northwest, TVA has a rich history of providing innovative and comprehensive design services for our clients.

Crystal Evolution

Brandon Shaw & Tobin Tanner Gnosis is a state of consciousness in which a person’s mind is focused entirely onto one idea, concept, or feeling. These sigils are visual tools to help a user reach that state of being. They represent mantras of sort. While meditation suggests clearing ones mind completely, Gnosis encourages a single solitary place to put ones energy. Gnosis was constructed by Brandon Shaw and lit by Tobin Tanner. These pieces have been featured at various festivals in the Pacific Northwest, and some of these pieces currently tour with Portland-based band Ayla Ray.

Shadow Sail Theater captures the shimmering nuances of shadow art by combining plasma cut metal with intricate paper cuts, analog light projections, and live silhouettes in an intimate interactive spatial environment. Participate in creating large scale works of shadow art by layering materials such as lace, glass, colour changing films, and handmade paper lace costumes, to animate them with movement and light. Heather Dawn Sparks engages collective action and inspired participation through immersive sculptural and performative works. Dream Dial is an interactive, old-school touchtone telephone-based dreamcatcher and sharing station. The project invites passersby to pick it up and to listen to others’ recorded dreams or to leave their own recording.

Come learn about circuits with The Hosford Maker Club. Based at Hosford Middle School in Southeast Portland, our club is a growing group of makers and designers always looking for a new challenge. We will be sharing our club-designed interactive circuits and games with any and all who want to explore and learn.

The Listener is a large interactive game based on the 1980s favorite “Simon.” Participants work together to repeat sound and light sequences using buttons on pedestals.

‘Into the Chainscape’ is a riff on this year’s PDXWLF theme, using a mundane and often overlooked material to create a visual and experiential surprise. The cube is made up of simple suspended ball chains representing malleable lines and planes, defining volume and space. The public becomes an active partner by entering into the volume, momentarily manipulating the platonic shape, through trial and tribulation, to reach the inner room of delight. The nature of dreams is a juxtaposition of memory and experience, the familiar and the peculiar, creating a sort of alternate reality. Through the interplay of material, pattern, form, and light, Chainscape provides a fluid environment to be explored and discovered, and gives people the ability to see things in a different light, as if in a dream.

The game has four levels, each with their own set of musical ”rewards”. Play through to the final level to hear the grand prize reward sound. Skylark Collective is a Portland-based cooperative providing joy through interactive art to participants of Burning Man and commissioned spaces across the United States. Our subject matter is playful interaction and we create it using thoughtful technical design. We seek to go beyond the expected and offer surprise elements in our work.



The Metabolizer is an open-source waste-toeverything system designed to mimic the ecological role of decomposing fungi — breaking down wastes and building them up into new things. The Metabolizer is powered entirely by a biochar reactor that reduces wood chips and other forms of biomass into charcoal, and it uses the energy produced by the reactor to shred up and 3D print waste plastics into new and useful objects. In the process, it produces light, heat, and shelter from the elements, creating a gathering space where folks can warm their bones and learn about disruptive, open-source, ecologically-integrated infrastructure! Imagine if you could mount a human-driven electric power generating device, which would allow you to light up a world of possible dreams, right in front of you. Your world of dreams with oversize flowers, orbs, creatures, and a huge caterpillar, whose segments light up individually as your power production increases. You can work as a team to try to light up the whole world with multiple devices all contributing! Julia Alora and Jan Carpenter are two Portland sculptoress creating new ways to energize art in active participation with community, building in education, while experiencing our art installation as a graphic measurement of people producing their own electricity.

Test your skills at skee ball while the fire keeps track of your points. The higher the score the larger the flame. Come play while you wait your turn to submit your stupid idea to be judged. Participants will be able to submit their thoughts and stupid ideas and place them inside the podium. These ideas will be evaluated by our eternal flame and if deemed exceptional or befittingly stupid the obelisk will react with a poof of flame signifying its approval.

Light Pollution

Kinetic DeLight is an opportunity to create light and joy together. Hundreds of kinetically illuminated skateboard wheels create a playfully dynamic installation that is an ever-changing reflection of visitor energy. Trail your hand along a wall of wheels and create dreamy, magical streaks of light from your fingertips. An ephemeral glowing pattern emerges from the ebb and flow of all who give it a spin.

As architects, we help design the real world around us. With our installation, we want to explore what it means to “inhabit a dream” in physical space. Using recycled materials, we are taking pieces of our real world and blending them with the ethereal qualities of light to create a physical representation of the dream state — fragmented, familiar, yet all together exciting to explore. YGH Architecture proposes to construct a sculptural space that promotes interaction between people, light, and space. Using recycled materials and flexible mesh, the sculpture will be made of interlocking forms to create space for people to both occupy and to pass through.

Xander Griffith Collaborator: Twinkle Suspended in the dome of the collective consciousness, spins the sweet dripping ideas of the hive. Encouraging the necessity of each of us to seek out ways to reflect our multifaceted minds. Xander and Twinkle have been creating one-of-akind disco balls for events since 2014.

From the warm glow of the engine and the hiss of the boiler to the rhythmic turning of the wheels, let these larger-than-life locomotives transport you back to the Railway Age. A highly entertaining and interactive musical experience where a small band leads a cozy audience through 100 years of songs — some classic, some contemporary, and some entirely unexpected! And the concept is simple: we provide the words on a carefully hand-crafted, projected flip-chart. Come join this decade-long sensation that has been filling fields at Oregon Country Fair at night with joy, laughter, and song! It’s the greatest campfire you’ll ever know. Created and led by by The Saloon Ensemble members Teresa Boyd and Jason Wells and backed by some of Portland’s finest musicians.

World of Dance U-Jam Fitness is an urban dance workout that makes you sweat while having a dance party. More than a fitness class, it’s a supportive community of instructors and students working together to have fun and achieve their fitness goals. Classes are designed for students of all ages and fitness levels.

Whether performing in front of thousands of anxious cyclists getting ready to leave the start, or greeting hundreds of runners at the finish, or anchoring a community parade, the Last Regiment never ceases to get the crowd pumped! Their energy is so contagious that the young and the old can be found dancing to the clean, thumping beats.

The core principles of peace, love, unity, and acceptance make it a welcoming space for all.

Over and over, we receive comments from participants of our events that their favorite part is when Last Regiment performs and that they will be back next year to hear them perform again.

Arcs, Sparks and Corona Glow

Acchord is an auditioned a cappella group composed of transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming musicians. We chose our name Acchord because it not only means to be in harmony, which is apt for a choir, but more critically, it also means to grant power. Through musical outreach in our local community, we strive to affirm that transgender, non-binary, and gender nonconforming people are seen â&#x20AC;&#x201D; we are brilliant, and we have power.

This performance displays the brilliantly colored light created by High Voltage Arcs, Sparks and Corona Glow. This is man-made lightning and thunder, only slightly tamed, and is brought close to people so they can see the beauty in these arcs. Demonstrations are 15-20 minutes and showcase the arcs generated by three different Tesla Coils and ten other types of HV apparatus with arc lengths up to 3 feet long. Intense electromagnetic fields are created, so in an abundance of caution, people with implanted medical electronics should not attend.

Featuring a noveau fusion of LED juggling, hooping, poetry, acrobatics, theatre, and magic, the psychedelic stylings of Circus Luminescence is a treat for the eyes, ears, and soul. Produced by Eli March and Scramble James, Circus Luminescence is a group of artists who have set out to bring light into the darkness and laughter into the air. They believe the fun they have onstage is contagious to the whole audience, and magic is a state of mind.

JuggleMania Collaborators: Rhys, Maria and Isabel Thomas The ”dun9 b33tl3” foreshadows a future where our human-scale waste is valued and gathered for reuse. Potentially nightmarish, the giant scavenger is actually a positive dream of future sustainability.

This costume/sculpture was created through a family collaboration and includes a fiberglass shell with electroluminescent wire (EL wire) accents, soft sculpture body, and “miasmic” swirling light effect in a 5’ rolling dung ball. The ”JuggleMania” family performs “hilarity & dexterity” internationally through www.jugglemania.com.



Open Light Booth Richard Miner Collaborator: Tom Barnes

Flipping the convention of an object casting it’s light to the audience, the Open Light Booth projects its lights inward. The person walking and controlling our art piece is the subject of illumination. Multiple light strips, all facing inward, cast ever-changing light patterns, on all sides of the person inside. Visitors are invited to get inside and take control of the lights as they become the focus of everyone’s attention. Richard & Tom (the creators of Open Light Booth) have been building illuminated art for the Portland Winter Light Festival since 2016. Richard is the more social member, and often dreams up the initial inspiration for each year’s project. Tom brings real world experience and keeps the projects grounded in what is practical to create. Each year is a race to bring the best of our joint vision to creation and completion.

The Booty Bump

Scott Sunn Collaborators: Tor Clausen, Ryah Radomski, Scotti, Andy ShapirBro & Sarah Balcom The Booty Bump is a mobile disco, designed to bring the tunes & pretty lights full force and throw down the party anytime, anywhere. The Bump can traverse any terrain, with space for two gogos on its light-up disco dance floor, and transforms into a popup DJ booth in a flash. This beautiful party starter unifies form and function to git’er dun in style. Originally conceived & fabricated by Tor Clausen (Musical Furnishing), Scott Sunn (Tracer Visuals), & Ryah Radomski, and funded by our extended community of superpals; Scotti, along with Andy ShapirBro (AND/OR) & Sarah Balcom (DJ PomPom), are proud to present the third incarnation of The Bump to our favorite festie fam.

PDXWLF 2020 FESTIVAL FAQ hen is the festival? W Thursday through Saturday, 6pm-11pm, February 6-8 2020. Is the festival free? Yes! The festival is not-for-profit, and is presented for free to attendees. It is made possible by generous support from our Sponsors and Donations from community members like you. Thank you for helping to keep the festival free for all! Where Is the festival located? The festival takes place at locations across the city of Portland, Oregon, and is centered along the banks of the Willamette River.

ait, this festival is outdoors in winter? W Yes! Isn’t that great? The festival is a reason to get out of the house and celebrate winter with the entire community. Please dress appropriately for Portland’s winter weather! How do I get there? We encourage everyone to walk, ride, or take public transportation to our various festival locations. See page 3, Getting Around, for more information. Where should I stay? If you are coming from out of town, consider staying with one of our Hotel Partners: Inn at Northrup Station and The Duniway. These local accommodations are knowledgeable about the festival and can provide you with an authentic experience of Portland! Will there be food? Yes! We have food and hot beverages available for sale from local food cart vendors.

Can I bring my kids? Absolutely! The festival is family-friendly and has a number of interactive activities for people of all ages. We especially encourage families to participate in our Educational Programming and the Lantern Parade. Can I bring my dog? The majority of the festival is outside on public land where you are welcome to bring your leashed pets. Dogs are not allowed in the World Trade Center Plaza. For festival events and exhibitions that take place inside, pets will not be allowed. Note that the festival can become extremely crowded and difficult to navigate; we recommend lighting up your pup for style and safety, or leaving them in the comfort of home. an I dress up? C Yes, please! In addition to dressing warmly for our winter weather, we always encourage attendees to participate by donning festive accessories. For sustainability concerns, we suggest avoiding single-use glowsticks (that you “crack” to activate) and instead using reusable, solar- and battery-charged LED lights, elwire (electroluminescent wire), and other light accessory options.
