T
he streets of Delisle were alive on Saturday July 16 for the annual Delisle Days event. There was a pancake breakfast and parade in the morning, kids land with live entertainment from Singing with Sylvia) in the afternoon, and a slow pitch tournament and beer gardens ran all day. Families enjoyed a BBQ lunch, snow cones, popcorn and candy floss while they took in the petting zoo, fish pond, train and bouncy rides on main street. The car show, sponsored by, Back 40 Embroidery, displayed about 25 amazingly well restored and customized cars and trucks and featured another beer gardens with live entertainment from ‘Better Than Nothing’. A fireworks show, sponsored by The Town of Delisle, wrapped it all up at dusk. Even the weather co-operated with a beautiful warm day to make for another successful Delisle Days. Food for Thought The Bare Facts
I
was most pleased with the letter I received from the Minister of Agriculture (see my last M.M.M.) in which he outlined the categories of Crown Lands to be protected. This is an orderly step forward in recognizing that some lands in categories one and two must be protected from cultivation in perpetuity. Of course we know from experience now, that “in perpetuity” only means until the next pressure group gets enough momentum that their lobbyists swing the opinion of the government of the day. In case you think this is too callous an opinion; consider the following experiences. The oil-sands area was once considered protected. Similarly, Banff National Park was once a haven where tourists had to be protected from the elk and bear, whereas now the bear and elk are at risk of the hordes of human invaders. There is the case in BC where a dedicated law separated lands for urban and industrial sprawl and worked for a few decades, until now the government is waffling around trying to change the circumstances for development. Of course the tragedy of
having the main highway west from Toronto pass through the most fertile lands in Canada instead of up on the rocky promontory has destroyed millions of acres of farm land. Or just trace Tom Mulcair’s political travels to leader of the NDP in which he left the Quebec Liberal Caucus because of being unable to stop the destruction of pristine forest from building development. The Pacific west coast has been declared an ocean park restricted zone for the marine wildlife, while the passage of oil tankers is being discussed. No, don’t give me the hog-wash about perpetuity. High on my “grump” list is the dismemberment of the PFRA created to offset some of the worst problems of the dust bowl years, had developed a unique and specialized ability to manage environmental problems on the prairies only to be shut down by short-sighted government. Protecting the habitat of many of our endangered species unique to the prairies is a worthy cause; however the management of the lands and waters is a much larger issue and requires active, not passive attention.
C.M. (Red) Williams
The Sand Hills of south western Saskatchewan is a case in point. Soils that can barely withstand controlled grazing has oil beneath the surface and sooner or later it will be tapped. We all know from bitter experience the permanent damage of oil well rigs and it would be permanent if it started the dunes moving. Along with that is the sprawl around Regina and Moose Jaw that seems to now cover the excellent farm land between the two centers. At least Saskatoon was built on a sand heap so the losses are not so relevant. I have to admit the much maligned “tree huggers” get it right when they try to prohibit the first onslaught on pristine lands because there is no turning back and the protection in perpetuity is just so much legalese, until economic pressure builds for changes to the original restrictions. It reminds me of the story of the farmer shouting at his son that had climbed up on the manure pile; “don’t eat that Elmer, that ain’t hay.”

Two Candidates in Race for Mayor of Vanscoy
W
ith the recent resignation of the Village of Vanscoy Mayor, Jerome Robert, the Village is taking nominations for the position. Nominations close on July 30 at 4:00pm and, to date, there have been two nominations submitted for the position. One of the people who has submitted nomination papers is Robb McGill, V.P. of Sales and Purchasing at Martin’s Produce in Saskatoon. Robb had previously served as Village Councillor for a 3 year term from 2009 - 2012. He ran for mayor in the 2012 election where he lost to Jerome Robert. Also running for the Mayor seat is Robin Odnokon, owner of Robin’s Nest Cafe in Vanscoy. Robin and her husband have operated that local business for the past 18 years. Robin has served as Village councillor for two terms, 2009 - 2012,
and was re-elected in 2012 for, the newly extended, four year term, but is cutting it short to run for the Mayors seat due to Jerome Robert’s resignation. During her two terms, Robin has served on many committees including Delisle & District Fire Commission, Delisle & District Health Board, the Vanscoy Recreation Board and the Highway committee. If there are still two or more people running for the Mayors seat once the nominations close, the Village will be posting a notice for the election which will be held on Wednesday, September 3rd, 2014 from 9:00am - 8:00pm. There will also bee an advanced poll running on Wednesday, August 27th from 4:00pm to 8:00pm, for those that may be away on election day.

...Summer ‘STAY-cation’ ... J ’ 14 Jim’s on 14 Restaurant and Catering
FEATURE DESTINATION
f you venture down Highway 14, west of Saskatoon, you will come across an ‘oasis’ on the prairie. Jim’s on 14 restaurant is located at the Oasis Golf Resort just outside of Perdue, and is operated by Carl Johnson and Linda Tkatchuk. Together they have over 30 years combined experience in the hospitality industry. In past years Linda has managed the restaurant at the Calgary tower and Carl worked 2 year at the Banff Spring Hotel, was the Banquet Chef at University of Calgary and was the executive sous chef at the Saskatoon Inn. He also worked for a month in Craft Services for a movie that was being shot in Calgary in the 90’s. “you really learnt how to cater to people”, says Carl, “from actors to directors to technical crews, that required catering service anytime from 6am to midnight and beyond”. They also ran the food services at the Calgary Academy, private

school, feeding 560 kids every day. “When we took over this service we were disappointed to see that they had been serving the basic corn dog level of nutrition. We worked hard to turn that around”, says Carl, “and began serving, salads, pasta, soups and other healthier dishes”
“not just the clubhouse restaurant, we are open to the public year round’ For the 6 years previous to taking over Jim’s on 14, Carl and Linda owned Grandma Lee’s in Saskatoon and built up a tremendous catering business there. “We want to do the same thing here”, says Linda, “we want people to know that we are not just the clubhouse restaurant, we are open to the public, year round, and provide much more than the clubhouse menu”. Not only do they create daily specials that are not on the menu, they are again building up the catering side of the
Stunning views from the glass covered patio
business. “We can cater off site or here at the restaurant” where they can accommodate 150 people indoors or on the massive glass enclosed patio that offer tremendous views of the vast prairie landscape and many of the holes on the golf course. According to Carl, “we offer everything from Bar-BQues, to Roast Beef, Stuffed Sole, Pastas, anything you want, we can probably do it, and we can set it up buffet style so everyone get what they want and as much as they want”.
While I was at Jim’s on 14 for the interview for this story, I had the opportunity to sample some of the food with my son. I had the pulled-pork sandwich, which was piled high on a fresh bun, topped with crisp creamy cole slaw and served with nice crisp french fries. Delicious ! My son had an order of nachos, as big as we had ever seen, topped with fresh vegetables, thick cheese sauce, jalapeno peppers and refried beans. They were awesome good, and we stuffed ourselves silly, but still ended up taking half of it home with us. Whether you go for the food, the view, the golf or a catered event of your own, Jim’s on 14 is a true ‘oasis’ ! Ken Sowter

MP REPORT
July 18, 2014 Kelly Block, M.P.
Canada’s Position on the Situation in Israel
F
or over a week, the State of Israel has been trying to eliminate the ability by the terrorist group Hamas to launch rockets into Israel. In recent days, both Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird have made statements reiterating Canada’s position that Israel has the right to defend itself. Here is the Prime Minister’s statement issued earlier this week: “The indiscriminate rocket attacks from Gaza on Israel are terrorist acts, for which there is no justification. It is evident that Hamas is deliberately using human shields to further terror in the region. “Failure by the international community to condemn these reprehensible actions would encourage these terrorists to continue their appalling actions. Canada calls on its allies and
partners to recognize that these terrorist acts are unacceptable and that solidarity with Israel is the best way of stopping the conflict. “Canada is unequivocally behind Israel. We support its right to defend itself, by itself, against these terror attacks, and urge Hamas to immediately cease their indiscriminate attacks on innocent Israeli civilians. “Canada reiterates its call for the Palestinian government to disarm Hamas and other Palestinian terrorist groups operating in Gaza, including the Iranian proxy, Palestinian Islamic Jihad.” Here is the Foreign Affairs Minister’s statement issued yesterday evening following Hamas’s rejection of Egypt’s ceasefire proposal and Israel’s initiation of a ground operation in the Gaza Strip: “Canada stands by Israel’s right to defend itself, by itself. Israel
will be forced to continue defending itself as long as Hamas continues its rocket attacks against civilians. “These operations could have been avoided if Hamas had not rejected the Government of Egypt’s ceasefire proposal—a proposal that was accepted by Israel and welcomed by the Palestinian Authority. This proves that Hamas has no interest in peace and bears responsibility for the further tragic loss of life. “Egypt is the best-placed country in the region to help end the current hostilities. It is a historic leader in regional peace efforts, having successfully brokered numerous ceasefire agreements over the years, and Egypt’s ongoing initiative is the only serious ceasefire proposal on the table.” I am very proud to have a Prime Minster who is willing to take such a principled stand on the world stage.

Big Opportunity
S
askatchewan might be small in size but it’s big in opportunity. Thanks to the vision and hard work of a dynamic, driven and growing population, our province stands out as a great place to live, work, play and invest. We see this in the latest figures from Statistics Canada.
www.pcs.gov.sk.ca/MainStreet. Beautiful scenery, friendly people and relaxing, easy-going pace – there is nothing quite like summer in Saskatchewan. With endless attractions and activities, the only difficulty is deciding what to do. For many, the season brings quality time in our Provincial Parks.
Saskatchewan is home to one of Canada’s best economies, a competitive business environment, innovative entrepreneurs and a skilled and hard-working labour force. Our province has more full-time jobs than ever before, more people working than ever before and Canada’s lowest unemployment rate for the eighteenth consecutive month.
Our parks are a great place to relax and go hiking, biking, fishing and camping. Park users can also enjoy both music and theatre with Embrace Theatre and Saskatchewan Express touring throughout the summer. The Saskatchewan Archaeological Society is doing the same with its ArchaeoCaravan tour and Canoe Kayak Saskatchewan and Sask Volleyball are also offering fun family programming, mini-camps and tournaments. You can visit saskparks.net for details.
The benefits of a strong economy is increasing wages for working people. Wages in Saskatchewan are steadily increasing. In fact, earlier this year, wages hit an all-time high. This, along with our quality of life, is key to both recruiting and retaining our skilled workforce. Saskatchewan is home to many historic downtowns and commercial districts, many of which are a point of pride. Recognizing this, our government has announced that Main Street Saskatchewan will be an ongoing program. This will involve working with communities to promote, conserve and capitalize on the things that make these areas unique. The decision to continue with Main Street Saskatchewan was based on the success of a three-year pilot project. Launched in 2011, it saw the Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport partner with the communities of Prince Albert, Maple Creek, Indian Head and Wolseley. By investing $1.65 million, these communities have seen the creation of 22 new businesses, 66 new jobs, $4.9 million committed to historic building and streetscape improvements and $6.5 million in property acquisitions. Home to 3.7 million visits last year, our parks play a vital role in supporting our high quality life. By investing in electrical expansion, new facilities and other upgrades, we’re enhancing the visitor experience and giving them good reason to return. This year’s provincial budget increases funding for parks by 4.6 per cent and includes $14.9 million for upgrades and new construction. The Ministry of Government Relations, in collaboration with various government ministries, agencies, Crown corporations and stakeholder groups, are providing updates on the key steps the province and its partners are taking in response to the record rainfall, flood and recovery operations occurring in eastern Saskatchewan. Details can be found online at Saskatchewan.ca. The contributions of all those who have helped to mitigate damage, restore access and recover cannot be overstated. We are truly thankful for their efforts.
