Robin’s Nest is Amazed by Support
O
wners of the Robin’s Nest Cafe in Vanscoy, Quinten & Robin Odnokon, are amazed by and grateful for, the generosity shown by the local community for Robin’s 9 year old nephew Kol Friggstad, who is battling brain cancer. In the past month they have received about $1500 in donations. “We thought we would donate a portion of our dry rib sales last month “say Robin” as well has pass on any donations to Kol. It is simply amazing what has happened”. We reported last month that Kol had recently gone to Oklahoma for treatment. His family arrived home in Outlook on February 6,
with a second round of treatments. Kol has now gone through two rounds of 20 day long treatments. He is still on a steroid prescribed by the doctors here and
Kolbjorn Friggstad has a constant, low grade headache that we won’t take any medication for. He has now changed his diet to give him the best possible nutrients to fight the cancer and keep him strong.
Kol is a very strong little boy. He spoke at a fundraiser for the Brain Tumor Foundation in February, about what he’s been through in the last 18 months. He was also the spokesperson for the Relay for Life in June of 2011. Kol is very passionate about reading which he often perseus in the clubhouse/library he received from the Children’s Wish Foundation. His family has been overwhelmed by all the support and gifts and are trying to get back to a routine to make sure they are also providing some stability to Kol’s 4 siblings as they all continue along this journey with Kol. Healthy Sports Drinks Submitted by Paulette Millis am often asked about the quality of the sports drinks that are available. The general public and the exercise enthusiasts seem to think these bottled drinks and squeeze tubes contain good nutrition. Sports drinks are comprised of two ingredients, sugar and electrolytes. Electrolytes (usually sodium and potassium) replace the salts lost through sweat, and they directly enhance the fluidity of muscle contractions as well as reduce muscle cramping. These drinks are packed with artificial colours and flavours, and the sad part is the poor source of the carbohydrates they contain. Usually the sugar is from highly processed, denatured and often genetically-modified sources, most commonly high fructose corn syrup or corn syrup solids. It is used because it is cheap,

plentiful and has a shelf life similar to plastic. Many classify this sweetener as “a food-like substance”. (3) There are many simple alternatives, some you may purchase, and some easy to make suggestions at the end of this article. It is important to replace fluids when exercising to prevent dehydration. Sports drinks are meant to replace fluids, electrolytes, and energy stores used up during exercise. Drinking sports drinks can cause weight gain and erode tooth enamel (high citric acid levels). (1) Sports gels and sugar fortified energy bars and drinks ignore the fact that fat is better for fuel then carbs, as fat yields three times the energy as a carb. (2) It is possible to suffer from heart palpitations, lightheadedness and trouble concentrating as well as muscle cramping when not consuming enough liquids with electrolyte
minerals. Consume fluids before, during, and after exercise regardless of whether or not you feel thirsty, as this helps prevent dehydration and muscle cramping. Did you know that enough water can significantly ease back and joint pain for many sufferers? Along with the liver, our kidneys are important for detoxification, and they extract a litre and a half of urine daily. (4) Regardless of drinking any sports drinks, be sure to drink two to three litres of pure water daily. The following healthy drinks are beneficial for all of us. If you are interested in more specific nutrients for serious workouts, two good resources that I recommend are Cory Holly and Brendan Brazier, as they use all natural nutrient dense ingredients. Suggestions: Purchase bottles or tetra packs of pure coconut water, a great source of

nutrition. Have cans of coconut milk (or bottles of coconut water) and Bolthouse Carrot Juice on hand for a fast drink to take with you. Simply mix half and half and place in a thermos. Blend half and half of any unsweetened fruit juice and water. Make your own coconut milk (recipe below) and/or your own carrot juice for an even healthier drink. Blend your favorite fruit(s), make your own nut milks, add essential fats like hemp oil; concoct your own drinks using whole healthy ingredients . Add ginger and/or turmeric to help reduce inflammation. Add Yerba Mate (a natural stimulant) to provide a boost in energy. Editorial With the iPad 3 and iPhone 5 on the horizon this year, we should be realizing that technology continues to advance at a blistering pace. This was brought to my attention just the other day when my mother, who is well into her 70’s asked me what she could do with an iPad and what it would cost. Yikes !! But she is not alone. Millions of people continue to move to these new ways of getting information and communicating, and it ain’t gonna stop. COUNCIL REPORTS TOWN OF ASQUITH
RM OF VANSCOY
VILLAGE OF VANSCOY
Asquith Town Council met for its regular council meeting on February 14. Saskatchewan Environment was out to inspect the water plant and lagoon and all reports are compliant with regulations. Christmas decorations have not yet been removed from the light standards as Sask Tel can no longer assist the Town with their bucket truck. Other alternatives are being looked at to remove the decorations and the Town asks for the public's patience in this regard. Requests are once again being sent out to those who own plots at the Asquith Cemetery and to those who have loved ones interred at the Asquith Cemetery for donations towards cemetery maintenance and upkeep. Last year, the Town contracted Jim and Kelly Stack to perform grounds keeping and a lot of compliments were received on the neatness of the grounds. If enough donations are received, the Town would like to plant some trees at the cemetery this year. If you are someone who would like to donate to the Asquith Cemetery, and who would like to have a yearly letter about the Asquith Cemetery emailed to you, please send your email address to town.asquith@sasktel.net. This will cut down on cost as well as save the environment! All cheques should be made payable to the Town of Asquith. The next regular council meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 13.
Council has adopted a policy stating that no building permits for dwellings will be issued until such time that the applicant has a valid septic system permit. Council is also requesting that all building permit applications for pole buildings be accompanied by an Engineer’s certificate and stamp on the pole support system of the building as well as the roof support system. Council is making application to be included in the Saskatchewan Scrap Tire Clean Up Program. This is a one time free removal of scrap tires on privately owned stockpiles. We will notify ratepayers once more information becomes available. Council is offering for sale by tender several items. They are listed in a separate advertisement in this month’s edition of the R.M. Review. Spring road bans will soon be here. Any roads having a special restriction will be clearly signed, showing the increased weight reduction. The next regular meeting of Council has been changed to Thursday, March 8th to allow council members attendance to the annual SARM convention.
Council of the Village of Vanscoy has opted to take down the one way traffic signs on Rayburn Avenue and turn it back into a two way street. (It wasn’t working anyway) The Village is still looking for volunteers to help fix up the ceiling in the hall and painting needs to be done; as well Council is looking for volunteers to help ready equipment for the auction to be held April 21. Please call the Village Office if you can spare a few hours of time to help. Assessment Notices will be prepared and will be sent out in the next month. Generally the assessments have not changed from 2011.
TOWN OF DELISLE Delisle Town Council held their regular meeting on February 14. Council has no objections to Sisters Two Restaurant applying for a liquor license for their premises at 100-2nd St. West. The Town will participate in the Saskatchewan Scrap tire Corp.’s Phase Three Program which provides for a one-time removal of scrap tires on privately owned stockpiles. The Town will begin proceeding to annex Parcel C, Plan 101486796, Extension 19 (Parcel No. 147206279) and NE 19-34-8-W3, Extension 1 (Parcel No. 119279379) from the R.M. of Vanscoy in the corporate limits of the Town of Delisle. At the regular Town Council meeting on March 13, 7:00 pm at the Delisle Town office, the Council of the Town of Delisle will be considering selling land for less than fair market value without a public offering for the purpose of establishing a privately owned Personal Care Home.

SCHOOL NEWS
DELISLE COMPOSITE SCHOOL Even with an extra day this year, February has gone by very quickly! Students at DCS have started semester 2, with all new classes for grades 10 through 12. The 'health promoting school' group is new at our school, and have been meeting with the intention of improving student's health choices. Their first activity is in the works: a contest to get kids drinking more water and less pop and energy drinks! The grade 9 UNO activity with the elementary school was a great success. This 'care partner' activity had students from both schools playing UNO in the gym as a fundraiser for the flooding in Illigan City, Phillipines. As well, students got to hear from Roughrider Weston Dressler that day as he came to give a donation to the school football team. The SRC held a 'pink dance' on February 9 that was a lot of fun. They have several spirit days planned in March; March 7 is Blast from the Past, and March 16 is Green Day. In terms of sports, the senior boys and girls basketball home tournament was on February 10 and 11. The format was round robin, with no playoffs, but both teams played very well. The girls will be hosting conferences on March 10. The boys travel to Dalmeny on the same day. They are also planning to host another home tournie before the season ends! The junior girl basketball team played against Langham to move on to the next round. The game had to go into overtime, it was so close! The girls lost by 3 points and didn't advance. According to Mr. Jeffries, "It's one of
the best darn teams you'll ever see around this place." They had a fantastic season, and we're looking forward to next year! The junior boys team did not participate in playoffs, and are still having a few exhibition games. In terms of wrestling, the team travelled to Edmonton with Monica and Brett each capturing a silver medal in their weight categories. The curling group had great success this year. The juniors were only able to send a girls team (not enough junior boys) to Colonsay for playdowns. The girls defeated Hanley for the win, south division title, and went on to face Osler in the division final. It was a big win, 14-0 over Osler to be Prairie Spirit champions. Congratulations to Payton, Quyn, Kathy, Eliisa, and Heather, and to coach Rod Worth! The senior teams also had great success. The senior boys and girls teams both made it to the second day of playoffs but didn't advance. The senior mixed team also won the division title! They advanced to Unity for district playdowns, but lost out some close matches. Congratulations to Jake, Kaylee, Mitch K, and Kabrina! In other groups, drama auditions are this week. The extra-curr choir is also getting ready for music festival in Dalmeny at the end of March. The grade 9 ski trip is on 'leap day' on February 29. And then the month is finished! Reminder to parents that there is no school on March 9 (PD Day), March 12 (day in lieu of interviews), and March 23 (convention).
Weston Dressler at DCS On February 2, Weston Dressler of the Saskatchewan Roughriders came to Delisle Composite School. He came to donate a cheque of $5000 from the Roughrider Centennial fund that allows them to donate money to schools around the province. This money will go towards new football bleachers and uprights. The school was honoured to have him. He answered questions and gave them information about himself and his football career. After he gave autographs to randomly selected students. by Wyatt UNO fundraiser for Philippines On February 2, 2012 students from grades K-12 gathered in the Delisle Composite gym for an exciting fundraiser. The fundraiser was to raise money for the devastating flooding in the Philippines that happened last December. A student from grade 9 was home at Illigan City visiting family when the flooding hit. Students gathered into the gym for a short assembly then all spread out along the gym to play UNO in their groups. The fundraiser was really successful with a total of 47 groups, and both the elementary and high school gyms were flooded with kids. We had a great time and were very successful through our donation. Thank you to everyone for your donations to help out the Philippines. Also thank you to all of the companies who donated UNO cards to help out with our fundraiser. By Jill

LORD ASQUITH SCHOOL Lots of activities happened at Lord Asquith in the short month of February. We kicked off the month with a fundraiser for Breast Cancer Research. The students donated a loonie to wear their hat in school or to purchase a “ski-doo”. On Friday, Feb. 3 the Prairie Women on Snowmobiles arrived at our school for a coffee break. They were presented with the donations received during our fundraiser. Lord Asquith raised $500 for this worthy cause. Hats off to all who donated! The KGrade 5 celebrated Learn-
ing Journeys with Grade 1, 3, and 5 presenting. We celebrated the 100th day of school on Feb. 9. The Grade 1-5 student rotated through various Math, Visual Arts, Science, Language Arts, and Phys. Ed. activities related to 100. The students brought donations for the food bank. Our goal was to reach 100 items and we went beyond our goal. Thanks for your generosity! The Prek and Grade 4 class went skating on Feb. 14 and the Grade 2 and 3 classes went skating on Feb. 17. On Feb. 14, the students
celebrated Valentine’s Day, also. The Grade 5 and 6 classes played two basketball games against Delisle. The girls tied one and lost one and the boys won both of their games. During the week of Feb. 13-17, Lord Asquith celebrated Spirit Week. Each day, the students dressed according to the theme of the day. The Senior and Junior basketball teams continue to work hard and are preparing for playoffs that begin soon. As you can see, the month of February has been a month of celebrations!
PIKE LAKE SCHOOL
There has been a lot of excitement around Pike Lake School as of late. Indeed in the month of February where we as a larger society tend to focus upon friendship and togetherness; these sentiments have also been very much alive and well in the halls of our little school with a big heart. Indeed February has brought much fellowship, frolicking and plans for more fun filled future festivities for the Pike Lake School Community. February is the wonderful time of year when Scholastic Book Fair comes to our library. Profits from the exciting event allow the library to purchase books and educational resources . . . and Mrs. Knackstedt always makes it super fun! Fraud Protection for the Elderly and Seniors Cst. Sheryl Raymond
C
riminals often regard the elderly and seniors as easy targets for many kinds of financial crime. Every elderly person should be aware of common fraud crimes and know how to prevent them. Here are a few tips with respect to common fraud crimes in Saskatchewan that can help prevent you and your family from becoming a victim of a financial crime. 1. Cheque overpayment scams: - Never agree to a deal in which the payer wishes to issue an amount for more than the agreed price and expects you to reimburse the balance. - Never give out your bank account or other financial or personal information. - Never turn over large sums of cash to anyone without consulting a lawyer, banker or other expert. 2. Door to door sales: - Always ask to see the salesperson's identification and license. Take note of their name as well as the name and address of
the company. - Ask the salesperson to leave if you feel threatened, intimidated or pressured. - Report the incident to the police if you are suspicious. 3. Home renovation fraud - Be wary of people arriving at your door claiming to be ‘in the neighbourhood’ offering ‘seniors discounts’ today only. If the deal is good today, it will be just as good tomorrow. - Never sign a contract until you and your lawyer, banker, or other expert have thoroughly read it. - Ask for and check references. - Ask for an estimate. Call around and get at least two other estimates. - Check out the company with the Ministry of Consumer and Business Services or the Better Business Bureau. - No matter what the person tells you at the door, do not be in a rush. Take your time and be an educated consumer. 4. Free vacation scams: - Do not buy a vacation through a telephone sales pitch.
Spring Road Bans Spring is coming very quickly and Road Bans will again be put on many roads in the area. We would like to remind people who have heavy equipment or loads to move that now is the time to do this. Many roads are
reduced to 2700 Kg or 6000 lbs. The length of time for road bans depends on the weather so be prepared.
- When traveling, deal with a reputable agent. - If you try to take advantage of this ‘free’ opportunity, you will undoubtedly end up paying the original cost of the vacation. 5. Malicious software: - This scam has become very common and involves a person (who appears legitimate) calling and advising that they have detected a virus or problem with your computer. They ask for your credit card number and remote access to your computer to fix the problem. - NEVER give out banking or personal information over the phone. - Keep your software such as anti-virus, firewalls, and anti-adware up to date. - Trust your instincts. If it appears suspicious, it probably is. If you suspect that you may be a target of fraud, or if you have already sent funds, don't be embarrassed - you're not alone. If you want to report a fraud, or if you need more information, contact The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre:

Prairie Spirit (West) Band Students Attend U of S High School Select Wind Orchestra
S
elect band students from all the high schools in the Saskatoon Public and Catholic school systems as well as Prairie Spirit East and West Divisions met on January 27-29 to form the U of S High School Select Wind Orchestra. This is the 9th year that this orchestra has been hosted by the University of Saskatchewan. Since it began in 2004, the ensemble has steadily increased in size. This year for the first time there were two ensembles, directed by Dr. Oehlerking and Dr. Gillis. As well, for the first time, besides students being selected from Saskatoon and surrounding area, stu-
dents were selected from around the province. This orchestra is made up primarily of grade 11 and 12 students who must be recommended by their band teacher to attend this ensemble. Seven students from the Prairie Spirit (West) Senior Band were given the opportunity to attend this workshop. These students are Michael Crabb (Borden), Aryn Polichuk (Borden), George Hembry (Borden), Tyrell Sargent (Borden), Dustin Wiens (Dalmeny), Liam Whelan (Asquith) and Olivia Whitmore (Delisle). The weekend workshop began Friday evening in Quance theatre in
the Education Building with a Mini Concert by the U of S Wind Orchestra. This was followed by two hours of rehearsal for the students attending. The workshop ran all day Saturday with eight hours of sectional practice and full rehearsals. On Sunday, January 29th the students presented a concert in the Education Building in Quance Theatre which was open to the public. This year the students had the opportunity to work with conductors Dr Glenn Gillis and Dr. Darrin Oehlerking. Dr. Oehlerking is Assistant Professor of Music Education and Director of Bands at the University of Saskatchewan where he conducts the
Wind Orchestra and teaches courses in conducting and instrumental methods. Dr. Glenn Gillis, Professor of Music, conducts the U of S Concert Band and several saxophone ensembles and teaches saxophone and Music Education courses at the University of Saskatchewan. The intent of this ensemble is to provide talented high school students another opportunity to learn and perform new repertoire as well as to support instrumental music and provide more interaction between the Secondary Schools and the University of Saskatchewan.

Prairie Spirit hopeful High School Project will Move Forward
February 23, 2012
T
he recent federal census revealed that Martensville is the second fastest growing city in the country. Larry Pavloff, Chair of the Prairie Spirit Board of Education, said the school division is well aware of the rapid growth in Martensville and the anticipated future growth. As a result, one priority of the Board’s advocacy work is to ensure that the urgent needs of Martensville students are met. The Board of Education recently sent a letter to Premier Brad Wall to highlight the needs in the Martensville community. “The Board also met with the Minister of Education earlier this
month to discuss a variety of issues,” Pavloff said. “We talked to the Minister about the growth in Martensville and urged the Ministry to move forward with the proposed expansion and renovation of Martensville High School.” The expansion and renovation of Martensville High School – which would also alleviate overcrowding in the City’s two elementary schools – was given the highest priority in the Ministry of Education’s Critical Space Shortage category last July. Both of the elementary schools in Martensville have had numerous relocatables added to their facilities and are operating above the Ministry’s own utilization guidelines. The Board of Education has
also formally applied to the Ministry for another new elementary school in the city. Pavloff noted that although the high school expansion project is high on the Ministry of Education’s priority list, the Ministry must move the project to the Approval in Principle stage in order for construction to begin. The provincial government typically announces capital projects annually at the time of the provincial budget in March. Pavloff said the Board encourages Martensville parents and community members to express their support for the high school expansion project by contacting the Premier, their local MLA and the Minister

of Education before the provincial budget is announced on March 21. “The allocation of relocatables has helped to accommodate our growing enrolments in the community of Martensville,” Pavloff said. “However, the Board is hopeful that the provincial government will move this project forward.” The proposed high school expansion project would more than double the size of the current high school facility. Because the expansion of the high school would provide more classroom spaces, a reconfiguration of grades for both of Martensville’s elementary schools and the high school would be determined. This reconfiguration of grades would benefit the elementary schools in Martensville that are experiencing tremendous enrolment growth and overcrowding. An overview of the proposed project is available for public viewing on the Prairie Spirit website (www.spiritsd.ca).

Increasing Exports to China As part of Prime Minister Stephen Harper's trade mission to China, Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz was pleased to announce this week that Tongwei Co. Ltd., a major Chinese feed company, intends to increase its purchase of Canadian canola meal by up to $240 million annually by 2015. Tongwei believes their imports of Canadian canola could rise to $900 million over the next decade. This increased demand for canola meal was facilitated by research funded by the Harper Government's Economic Action Plan. "Tongwei's interest in Canadian canola is a perfect example of how the Harper Government's partnership with industry and investments in research are returning more dollars to the farm gate," said Minister Ritz. "Canadian canola is second to none when it comes to quality and consistency of supply which is why our Government continues to work with industry to increase demand and improve predictability of market access for the long term." Using funding provided through the Agricultural Flexibility Fund (AgriFlexibility), the Canola Council of Canada has been working with a number of Chinese dairy and aquaculture processing companies, including Tongwei, to demonstrate the superior quality and nutritional benefits of canola meal. As a result, Tongwei intends to increase its use of Canadian canola meal in its aquafeed and to include it in other animal feed rations. In the dairy feeding research it was observed that canola meal is cost effective, has superior nutritional value and contributes to increased milk production in dairy cattle. In 2010, $1.8 billion worth of canola was exported to China, making it the largest
market for Canadian canola. This growing trade relationship creates benefits for both countries. Increased use of Canadian canola will help Chinese farmers achieve the goal of doubling milk production by 2015 as outlined in China's 5 Year Plan. Chinese consumers will also benefit from increased access to canola oil, a "heartsmart" cooking oil. The leaders also signed a series of bilateral trade agreements which allow for the resumption of Canadian beef and tallow exports after a nine year hiatus. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee This week, on February 6, Canadians across the country celebrated the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the throne. The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will be marked with celebrations throughout the year, recognizing the Queen’s extraordinary service to the Commonwealth, and particularly Canada. The following is an excerpt from Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s message marking the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee: “Canadians have good reason for celebration in 2012 as we mark the Diamond Jubilee of our head of state, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. For only the second time in our history, we will honour the 60-year reign of a Sovereign. The Queen has dedicated her entire life to the service of others and has always held this country and all Canadians in the deepest of pride and affection.” “During Her Majesty’s 2010 Royal Tour, her 22nd tour of Canada, The Queen made a very simple yet most profound statement; declaring that it was good “to be home”. From the opening of the St. Lawrence Seaway to Expo 67; from the 1976 Montreal Summer Olympics to the Bicentennial of New Brunswick and Ontario; from the 125th anniversary of Confederation to the 100th an-
niversary of the Royal Canadian Navy, The Queen has been with us in celebration of who and what we are as a proud confident people. Her Majesty eloquently summarized this sentiment when she said: “It is a privilege to serve you as Queen of Canada to the best of my ability, to play my part in the Canadian identity, to uphold Canadian traditions and heritage, to recognize Canadian excellence and achievement, and to seek to give a sense of continuity in these exciting times in which we are fortunate enough to live.”” 2011 Census Growth in Saskatchewan The 2011 Census count released this week shows Saskatchewan grew by 65,224 between 2006 and 2011. That is by far the largest population growth in any census period since Statistics Canada started doing the Census every five years in 1956. The population growth also marks a complete reversal from the previous two census periods 1996 to 2001 and 2001 to 2006, which saw Saskatchewan's population drop by about 11,000 people during each five-year period. In its Census release, Statistics Canada called Saskatchewan a "turnaround," saying: "A complete turnaround occurred in Saskatchewan, where the population increased 6.7 per cent between 2006 and 2011, following declines of 1.1 per cent in each of the two previous intercensal periods." Premier Brad Wall said the new census numbers show Saskatchewan is on the right track. "Saskatchewan is simply the best place in Canada to live, to
RM Review
work, to raise a family and to build a life. More and more people are now discovering that and it is why our population is growing." Saskatchewan population growth of 6.7 per cent was the third highest among the provinces, behind only Alberta at 10.8 per cent and BC at 7.0 per cent. The three western provinces were the only provinces ahead of the national growth rate of 5.9 per cent. Saskatchewan's population as of the Census date in May 2011 was 1,033,381. Creating Jobs in Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar As we find ourselves in mid-winter, many of us dream of summer. For some, that means weekends at the cottage or barbecues with family. For many students, summer is a time to gain work experience and earn money for school. With that in mind, I would like to personally invite local employers to apply for funding through the Canada Summer Jobs program to help create much-needed jobs for students this summer. Employers can apply online at www.servicecanada.gc.ca/csj2012 or print an application from the website. They can also get an application by visiting any Service Canada Centre. Applications must be submitted between February 1 and February 29, 2012. Our government’s top priority is job creation and economic growth. I encourage employers to take advantage of this remarkable program that benefits our community, our local economy and especially the students of SaskatoonRosetown-Biggar.

MLA REPORT
February 16, 2012 Randy Weekes, MLA Surgical wait times are down again, as our government continues making progress towards its goal of no one waiting more than 3 months for surgery by 2014. New statistics updated to the end of last December show the number of patients waiting more than 18 months is down 89 per cent from where it was in 2007. The number of people waiting more than 12 months is down 76 per cent. Over the last five years, our government has instituted several new initiatives that have played a role in this reduction, including; using private surgical clinics within the public system; to recruiting more doctors and nurses; and expanding training opportunities for medical students. During the recent campaign, one of the promises we made was to continue to manage the province’s finances in such way that our econ-
omy remains strong and growing. I am happy to report today that this year’s budget remains balanced despite historic flooding last year. Due to the strength of the Saskatchewan economy and our current prosperity, our government was able to provide assistance to the many Saskatchewan families affected by flooding. In spite of that, we will finish this year with a balanced budget, further reduce the provincial debt and retain a balance of more than $700 million the provincial savings account. It’s not often that an announcement halfway around the world affects Saskatchewan directly - unless you control close to 20 per cent of the global resource involved. The federal government announced recently that it had signed a $3 billion deal which will see China buy Canadian uranium. That directly affects our province; due to the fact all of the
uranium production in Canada comes from Saskatchewan mines. Uranium mining pumps hundreds of millions of dollars into the Saskatchewan economy each year through expansion, salaries, taxes and royalties. Saskatchewan Watershed Authority is looking for average to below average runoff, which means a low risk of flooding. However, in some areas, with a high carryover of water there could still be flood issues. Significant late winter or spring storms could increase risk of flooding. That being said, this is the first forecast issued for 2012, and SWA will continue to monitor the spring melt. If we do have flooding issues the province will provide assistance through PDAP. Our government remains committed to ensuring Saskatchewan families are safe and secure in the event of job action by important service-providers such

as nurses or snow-plow operators. In light of the recent court ruling on our Essential Services law, which upheld the need for such legislation, we will work with the organized labour to find the right balance that protects you and your family. To that end, we have asked the Saskatchewan Federation of Labour for written input which we hope to receive by the start of the spring session of the Legislature. We have made it easier than ever to plan your summer vacation at a Provincial Park. This year we have expanded the 14-night maximum stay during peak season to more parks, and made all camp sites open for either walk-up or reservation. Beginning at 8 a.m. CST on March 12, 2012, reservations can be made in real-time for 24 parks through their website or by calling 1-855-7377275.

noted a recent press release that stated that in a poll BC’ites were strongly in favour of legalized marijuana. And, in the recent Liberal convention a similar supporting motion passed with little discussion or opposition. One robin a spring does not make; however perhaps there is some ground movement as the understanding grows that the criminal elements arising from maintaining the current rules are unacceptable. Of course I belong to a generation for with marijuana had no attraction ( I quit smoking tobacco soon after returning from WWII); but I have a son for whom medical use is essential and he fears that current indications are that the federal government will prohibit his growing his personal needs. arch is here and with it calving season. Every year I hear of some poor soul getting mauled by a cow that had just calved. It pays to remind ourselves of the dangers that lurk when calving cows and the care we must take to expect the unexpected. My own lesson occurred many years ago when I was a wee tadpole but has stuck with me ever since. My father bought twenty ewes one fall when I was around twelve and we quickly befriended the quiet ones and named them according to what was obvious i.e. Baldy, Blacky, Curly or by their steel tag numbers; #8, #21, etc. . # 21 was everyone’s favourite and would let you scratch her behind the ear or eat out of your hand. She was always the first to come running over when the bus dropped us off and had the big brown trusting eyes that she used to parlay into extra grain or a long scratch on itchy spots. The ewes were all bred

that fall and passed an easy winter in a little pen next to the barn, a kind of hobby for us boys against the constant mucking with cattle. Sheep chores were always a breeze as one bale fed almost all the sheep and sheep didn’t drink nearly as much as cattle, a fact which was much appreciated when hauling water by the bucket. In early spring the big bulging bellies of the ewes began to bring forth lambs. As each ewe lambed we would check out the newborns and see what we had. One day after school we were told that # 21 had lambed and was in a pen by herself mothering up. I was the first one to the pen and leaping over the rail fence jumped into the pen ready to congratulate old #21 and check out her twins. I had no sooner landed on my feet in her pen and looked up when #21, my pet, my friend, head lowered and at full speed, rammed me in the guts. My air went out of my lungs and as I clung incredulously to the rail #21 backed up about ten

steps then rammed me again this time in my hip as I turned to avoid her. Then as I breathlessly attempted to crawl over the rail fence she nailed me again with her bony head square in my buttocks jamming me into the rough poplar rails and nearly disembowelling me. I toppled over the fence and stood painfully groaning beside #21’s pen while inside the ewe stood head high stamping her feet at me seemingly oblivious to any previous relationship we might have had. It took about four days before #21 returned to her old self although we were all careful not to get
caught between her and her lambs and we were never able to regain the old feelings we had for her after her betrayal. It was a valuable lesson to a young fellow and I never forgot to be careful around recently freshened animals regardless of previous good behaviour. My only slip-up was on the direction of my wife’s obstetrician when, against my better judgement, he placed me directly in a small room with my wife while she was giving birth. Thankfully I suffered only verbal abuse whose emotional scars have mostly healed.
