The Summer of Pancakes ??

ancake breakfasts seem to be a summer ritual second only to a BBQ. Myself, I am more of a BBQ kinda guy, but my family is insane for pancakes any time of the year, and summers provide them the fix they are always looking for. This year there are many opportunities to enjoy a delicious breakfast while supporting a local organization. In the coming weeks there are at least six pancake breakfasts in our community, and I know we will be attending many of them.

Agrium Vanscoy Potash Operations (VPO) is having an open house for the communities of Vanscoy and Delisle. This will be an opportunity to learn about our operations and ask questions!

Delisle Hotel First Annual Pickled Egg Competition

he Delisle Hotel held it first annual Pickled Egg Competition on June 21st. 16 contestants put their home made pickled eggs up against other local competitors. While the capacity crowd of hotel patrons enjoyed free chicken wings from Wing-Nit Farms, the judges sampled the egg creations made from eggs provided by Sloboshan Farms, the judges (Rita Pfoh, Bob Pfoh, Dan Mantyka, Rodney Martin and Ken Sowter) tasted and scored each entry.

They awarded first place to Doug McKay who received a trophy and products from Lucky Bastard Distillery. Second place went to Mel Oulette, who also received a Luck Bastard product, and third went to Lori Coleman, earning her a chocolate liqueur product. The hotel patrons then had a chance to sample the eggs themselves and cast ballots for the peoples choice award, won by Norma French. The jars of the remaining eggs were auctioned off, raising $256 for the Delisle

Cemetery Committee. Other prizes for the remaining contestants were provided by Delisle Ag Co-op and Great Western Brewery. Bartender Kenny Traynor conceived the idea of the contest a few months ago because “so many people around here make amazingly good pickled eggs, and I thought it would be fun to get them all together to see who really made the best”. With a successful amount of entries and a huge turn-out for the contest itself, it will likely continue it every year.

Movie Review - Fault In Our Stars

T

A Love Story with a Terrible Twist

he Fault In Our Stars stars Shelaine Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Nat Wolff, Laura Dern, and Willem Dafoe. Hazel (Shelaine Woodley) and Gus (Ansel Elgort) are two teenagers, one with cancer, and one who beat it. The two bump into each other at a cancer support group and from there a love blossoms. First, let me start by saying that I have not read the book and this is a movie standpoint for the review. That said lets continue. Shelaine Woodley is by far the main selling point of this movie. Her performance as Hazel was just terrific and she really connects to the character. Ansel El-

gort and the most of the supporting cast is where I have the most problems. Gus is only 18 and he talks like he invented the word love, it was really weird to see on screen. The parents are also pretty generic and cookie cutter characters. The only stand outs in the supporting cast are Issac (Nat Wolff) and Hazel’s mother (Laura Dern). Fault In Our Stars sells cancer as a physical hardship that turns people into ticking clocks. But the film can’t stop looking towards the inevitable. There’s no luxuriating in this film because one half of the couple is human. Hazel lives in the moment. Gus lives in a dream. And

that combo doesn’t make for a movie that feels anything like “the truth.” The Fault In Our Stars did have some faults and they mainly came from the stars. The script was very indulgent and viewed cancer the wrong way. But some good performances by good actors and you have yourself a decent chick flick. I am giving The Fault In Our Stars a 5/10. Food for Thought What is Organic ?

I grit my teeth each time I pass the organic food shelves. It grates on my nerves that there should be an industry in conflict with science, and there is a portion of the consuming public that continues to support the façade with their hard earned dollars. To confuse organic production with the need to protect our food supply is not only an error, but defeats the real objectives of research to produce more, high quality food for the consuming public. To consider the organic movement as a watch-dog is equally an error since that requires their embracing of the latest scientific technology.

C.M. (Red) Williams

Organic production by definition means producing with the farming approaches that were replaced a half-century ago. It would be shocking to go back to producing 25 bushels per acre of wheat, with all the uncontrolled damage of insect and plant disease plagues. It is difficult to predict the technical advances we can expect in the coming years but they are likely to push yields and quality along with more effective control of plant diseases and pests. The widening difference in the productivity of organic and advanced farming practices will increase until the market place will reflect rational consumer choices.

Legislative Session Summary

s the spring session comes to an end and the House rises I would like to wish you all a safe and restful summer. As some of you may be aware, over the past month, the House has been sitting from 10:00am until well past midnight on most nights. These extra sitting hours have resulted in one of the most productive Parliament’s in some time. Our government has been working hard for Canadians by promoting strong families and safe communities, and encouraging economic growth and prosperity. Outlined below are some of the Bills and initiatives that our government has been working on this past spring: Our Government passed the Strengthening Canadian Citizenship Act which will strengthen the value of Canadian citizenship and improve the efficiency of our immigration system. This Act is premised on the belief that Canadian citizenship is a privilege, not simply a passport of convenience. To this end, the Act proposes to impose stronger penalties for fraud, bar foreign criminals from obtaining citizenship and enable revocation of citizenship from dual nationals who are convicted of terrorism, high treason and spying offences, or who take up arms against Canada and Canadian interests. Our government also passed the Fair Elections Act to protect Canadian voters and ensure that citizens are in charge of democracy, not special interests and rulebreakers.

The Fair Elections Act will protect voters from rogue calls and political imposters by punishing those who attempt to deceive Canadians, keeping big money out of our elections by ensuring donation limits cannot be circumvented and cracking down on fraud by ensuring fraudsters are stopped before their ballot is in the box. The Government of Canada introduced Bill C-36 Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act, an act that addresses prostitution and protects Canadian communities. This comprehensive “made-inCanada” approach seeks to address prostitution by using a two-pronged approach: (1) by criminalizing those who fuel and perpetuate the demand for prostitution by purchasing sexual services, and (2), by protecting those who sell their own sexual services, vulnerable persons, and Canadian communities from the harms of prostitution. By adopting these measures, the proposed legislation aims to reduce the demand for sexual services. Another ambitious initiative on which our government has embarked is the Muskoka Initiative on maternal, newborn and

child health. This spring, Prime Minister Stephen Harper hosted the Saving Every Woman Every Child: Within Arm’s Reach Summit in Toronto. Thanks to the Muskoka Initiative and subsequent global action, maternal mortality rates are declining, and millions more children are celebrating their fifth birthday. The Summit focused on reducing the preventable deaths of mothers, newborns and children under five in developing countries, and brought global leaders and Canadian experts together to ensure that maternal, newborn and child health remains a global priority. As Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Natural Resources, I have the pleasure of serving on the House of Commons’ Standing Committee for Natural Resources. This spring, the Committee concluded a major study of the cross-country benefits of the oil and gas sector. Throughout the study, witnesses expressed strong support for further development of Canada’s oil and gas resources, and agreed that timely access to new markets is crucial for the industry’s continued growth.

July 2014

askatchewan is home to real growth and real opportunity – opportunity that continues to attract people from other provinces and around the world. Saskatchewan grew by more than 5,000 people in the first quarter, bringing our total population increase in the past year to more than 21,000. Statistics Canada says Saskatchewan is now home to 1,122,588 people. This is the start of our eighth consecutive year of strong population growth, a far cry from the years when our province was actually losing people. We are encouraged that our quarterly and annual growth rates are second-highest among the provinces, behind only Alberta. This steady growth is credit to the continued confidence and contributions of our diverse and growing population. These contributions can be found in the latest labour force figures from Statistics Canada. Saskatchewan people continue to create jobs and more Saskatchewan people are working than ever before. With record job numbers and record employment, our unemployment rate is the lowest in Canada for the seventeenth consecutive month. One of the keys to supporting a growing province and a growing economy is providing parents with the tools they need to work, return to work, or study after starting a family. The reality is that access to quality child care is a necessity and by investing in new spaces our government is working to alleviate some of the pressures that exist, particularly in growing communities. As part of our 2014-15 budget, our government has provided funding for more than 500 new child care spaces in eleven communities. This raises the number of funded licensed child care spaces in Saskatchewan to more than 14,200 – a 53% increase in the last seven years. You can visit Saskatchewan.ca to find a full listing of licensed child care services in the province. Despite recent rainfall, we are see-

ing great progress on a variety of construction projects across our province. This is possible because of our government’s commitment to build and maintain transportation infrastructure. Currently there are several, major multi-million dollar highway projects underway. Projects of note include new twinning lanes, 300 kilometres of repaving on our busiest highways and 150 kilometres of rural highway upgrades. We’re also starting work on supergrid pilot projects and hundreds of bridge and culvert improvements across the province. Crews are also busy painting lines and pavement signs on nearly 48,000 kilometres of highway. As highway workers do their job to improve our safety, we ask that you do your part to improve theirs. Simplified signage, asking that we reduce our speed in work zones, is now in place across the province. With photo radar, drivers who don’t slow down, run the risk of facing triple the normal fines for speeding. As far as road safety is concerned, Saskatchewan will see new traffic safety laws come into effect June 27th. The new legislation aims to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries by imposing harsher penalties for impaired driving, distracted driving and excessive speed. Passenger safety changes include mandatory booster seats for children under 7 years of age and recommended seats for children less than 4’9” tall and those under 80lbs. The changes, which can be found in detail at sgi.sk.ca, are the result of an action plan put together by a Special Committee on Traffic Safety. Our province has much to offer our youth, especially in the summer, and STC is giving them a convenient and affordable way to get out and experience as much as possible. This summer, youth in Saskatchewan can ride with the Saskatchewan Transportation Company for just $20 plus tax for a oneway ticket or $40 return. Youth, aged 12 to 25, can purchase their Youth Seat Sale tickets from any STC agency between July 1st and August 31, 2014.

AMAZING SPACE - Laurali Fehr: Melody & Harmony

W

hat would you expect a teacher of piano, song and movement to listen to in those off- hours / down- time? Laurali Fehr, a teacher of those combined disciplines, will tell you “absolutely everything”… but qualifies, “I am conscious of the fact that music contributes to our pattern of thinking and our emotions so I do stay away from anything that is dark or contrary to my core values. For the most part I am playing “Contemporary Worship” music in my home or vehicle - music that is soul food and speaks to my heart. I do love listening to CBC Radio 2 to keep me up to date with some up and coming classical artists.” Laurali, her husband Carlin and children became members of our larger community in 2002, Carlin, as Pastor to the congregation of The Delisle Community Church and Laurali, amongst other responsibilities, a facilitator of worship through music. Each a graduate of the Columbia Bible College (Abbotsford, BC) and each bringing a history of expressing music, Carlin with his affinity for the guitar and an occasional teacher of that instrument, Laurali, with a background in advanced classical piano studies and adjudicated choral experiences - singularly and together foundations for an initiative that in 2009 brought to our community the esteemed international program, Music for Young Children (contemporary methods of educating children - with their parents - in the science and art, the basics of creating music.) Laurali will tell you that she grew up with church music - in a Mennonite home that held a “rich culture of amazing music” and misses those days of a “church filled with people singing in 8 part harmony” a format where “every song tells a story. Just like learning to read words.” Very much aware of layers of sound and forms of verse, the need to

Modular & Manufactured homes from 864 sf to 2400 sf New Show Homes Now in Stock

discover and reveal that sound can be understood when one learns that choral work was an early part of Laurali’s musical training under the disciplined direction of the renowned choral director, Anne Campbell (Anne Campbell Singers) of Lethbridge; later, while singing under the choral direction of the revered Rudy Baerg (Columbia Bible College) the joy of carrying song would resonate farther afield - throughout several old churches and cathedrals of Europe. Within the Music for Young Children program, the teacher is required to guide students early on toward the energizing (playing) of that magical dot, the note. Laurali needs to hear her “students tell a story through their notes.” “Once the story is told one will see the beauty of the music. It’s not easy but that is why we teach dynamics, technique, and do finger exercises to help us tell the story the best that we can.” This early exposure to the art of storytelling in music was nourished by a father who would bring her to concerts and recitals, an exposure to musicians at varying levels - perfecting their craft over time. For her students, she will “try and play great musicians for them to hear” and often, with those students, will join members of an audience listening to and watching The Saskatoon Symphony. Students will learn that the ease of accomplishments heard will take time and be as frustrating for them as for those senior musicians. Laurali has experienced those frustrations and disappointments and writes of a well-known teacher of advanced grades in piano who at times “would push her to tears.” Working “harder” did eventually reveal the “stories” this teacher wanted her to hear, a process that she understands and values still as she explains why, on reflection, Chopin would be one of her favourite composers because of the difficulties within his music as well as the memory of “a reward to be able to pull- off one of his pieces for a recital or exam!” The study of those difficult pieces of “work” is ongoing as are the formal requirements of teachers to remain aware and current in the methodology of teaching Music for Young Children. Other aspects

of personal creativity have not been set aside for pleasure and satisfaction are to be found in the revitalization of “old hymns” with “either new chords or even a more modern rhythm.” The contemporary melodies and lyrics available for worship through young composers, singers and instrumentalists (Mark, Tomlin, Assad, etc.) will continue to teach and inspire. (These artists are available on YouTube.) Laurali writes: “I love my students! Children who are involved in music education are usually very creative and that often comes out in their personality. We love to have interaction during class and there is not a class that goes by that there isn’t laughter. Honestly, I think that I have an amazing job! Also, there is nothing like living in a community that I can often run into a student and receive a big hug. I guess music helps us build relationships with one another too!” Follow Laurali via www.myc.com/Teacher/LFehr Submitted by Julia Sherbot Delisle and District Arts Council
