Kolbjorn Friggstad passed quietly away in Saskatoon with his family at his side. His 2 year long battle with brain cancer has finally ended. His funeral was held in Outlook on Saturday May 26. Many of you have been following the journey of Kol and his family since he was first diagnosed back in 2010. There have been many articles written in local papers and his family had kept a journal on a blog, chronicling the journey. An outpouring of support from the commu-

Many people who came forward with donations when they learned of the young boys struggle, had never me Kol or his family.

His hometown newspaper called him “the boy who lifted a town”, but even far from his hometown, people were touched by his story
and have shown that he in fact had lifted a much larger community. It is said that ‘it takes a village to raise a child’ which has been sadly proven as a whole community now mourns when one has been lost. The Friggstad family is very grateful for the support they have received from this community, from people they have not, and may likely never meet, but with whom they have shared the common bond of being touched by the all to short life of a very special boy. KS
Thank You Thank you to Vanscoy and the surrounding community for the phenomenal support given to my grandson Kolbjorn Friggstad and to our family. Sandra Ulven

Editorial With the arrival of June we will soon welcome the first day of summer. As well, we will once again find Father’s Day upon us. Time to go into my closet and cull out the least or never used of my many neck ties to make room for the inevitable replacements soon to come from my son... actually I jest. Ask anyone that knows me, they likely cannot say that they have ever seen me wearing a tie, and I guess they probably never will. So when my son needed to begin a lifetime of gifting his old dad on Father’s Day, my wife guided him into the world of novelty boxer shorts. This time if you ask anyone that knows me will likely be able to say that indeed they HAVE seen me wearing a pair on occasion. I now have many humorous or rude or just plain weird pairs of these often graphic undergarments, but unlike the ties, they do need to be replaced quite often. I am lucky that they are also a go-to gift for birthdays and Christmas as well. I do indeed look forward to Father’s Day each year. Not for the gifts (or the endless praise and pampering I receive that day... NOT), but instead, for the feeling of pride I somehow feel because I am a father. Which got me to thinking about what being a father really is.
S ANDYRIDGE G AS & G ROCERIES
The word Father is used many ways to describe many people.... Father’s of Confederation, Founding Father’s, even leaders in a church are refered to as Father. There are many other examples that all carry a similar meaning. Why are they called fathers? They have sacrificed their time to build nations, or say a home, for thier people. They have structured laws and societies to protect us. They have selflessly shown leadership from which we have all learnt and followed in our lives for generations. Yes, these fathers are the provider, protector and leader that I strive to be for my family. There are some families that have no biological father for various reasons. Divorce, death, single mothers, two mothers... but that doesn’t mean there can be no father influence for these children. Teachers, coaches, firefighters.... all these people can provide protection and leadership not only to children but to all of us. Though we may not refer to them as fathers, that is the role they play. Those that give of themselves to run our local governments, to provide our community with roads and water and protect us from possible disasters are indeed acting as fathers to all of us. So this Father’s Day, if you are blessed, as I am, to receive a gift from your own child who sees you in this way, humbly accept the thanks dad, I love you dad and the pat on the back and the hand made card. Then next time you get the chance to thank or pat on the back one of the many ‘fathers’ you have in your community.... I suggest you take it, because, like me, it’s all they do it for.

O
ur EMO in Vanscoy would like to thank the eight residents of Vanscoy who attended an open meeting in the Circle Hall on Monday May 7th; (5 of which were council and staff). The Provincial Office from Protection Services put on a presentation that showed all who attended, the disasters that have befallen different communities in our province during the past few years. There have been many and to those who say it won’t happen here, I say, I hope not, but after that presentation I am concerned that we may have to react to a similar situation one day here in Vanscoy. Many of you work out of our community and have loved ones that attend school in Vanscoy or have relatives that live in town and are retired. We have an emergency plan that was put together by our Village Administrator; that will bring into effect a plan which will deal
with a natural or manmade disaster. This could be anything from a chemical spill on the railroad or highway, to a tornado. We are somewhat prepared to deal with these disasters but only one piece of the plan remains. You the residents need to be a part of the plan and only a small handful showed up to get involved in saving the lives of our children, relatives or ourselves in the event of a major disaster happening in our community. We cannot have a successful evacuation of our village if we do not know who lives in each home and where they might be if we need to account for them in the event of an emergency. We need to know if you have pets that need saving. We need to know where you can be reached if we require you to be reunited with loved ones when your village is in lock down and you can’t gain access to your home. We need your assis-
tance to make sure you are part of any plan to save your lives and protect your property. The legislation which has made this planning mandatory has replaced The War Measures Act and has the authority to take control of all assets in the event of a declared emergency. We need your assistance to do that and have you onside when tough decisions have to be made on your behalf. This is not a situation where eight residents should make a call on your behalf, but, rather a situation where we can all work together by providing any and all assistance that will be required to help whichever situation has to be dealt with. We need people on each block that can be block captains, who will be responsible to get information to neighbors and who will work with the EMO Operations Center in the event of an Emergency. We need to know what assets you can help
with in the event of a disaster. We need to know where your family is so we do not leave someone behind in the event of an evacuation because of some deadly chemical that may lurk in our midst. You say it won’t happen here! Well to those who attended I applaud your interest, and to those who didn’t, do you know what to do in the event of an emergency declared in the Village of Vanscoy ? The next public meeting of the EMO will be held at the request of the village residents. It is time for you the residents to get involved as I ,the EMO coordinator, cannot make people attend a public forum to help them in the event of catastrophic disaster befalling on our village. Regards, John Hendrickson EMO Coordinator for The Village of Vanscoy
ing upwards of two years for a child care space. It is also the hard truth that the ECE profession has a shortage of skilled and trained workers, chronically underpaid workers, and staff retention issues. In order to successfully open the 500 spaces (based on a 2.5-5yr age group) centres would need to find adequate space, equipment and staff all which are legislated by the Child Care Act and Child Care Regulations. Directors would be looking to hire 50+ workers. It is evident by looking at the past number of ECE graduates (approximately 101 ECE Certificates and 58 Diploma) from the 2010-11 graduation year in Saskatchewan. In Saskatoon this year there will be a whopping 10 ECE Diploma graduates from SIAST.
Of these graduates we would be curious to know how many enter the child care field and how many pursue other avenues. So, though it may appear that there are enough “qualified” people to hire, you could ask any Director their opinion! Saskatchewan Ministry of Education – Early Years Branch has a basic minimum surrounding child to staff ratios and percentage of educated staff required in each centre. Each centre strives towards best practices which are to hire professionals that are Level 3’s as set out by ECE qualifications. Staff retention is challenging due to poor wages and high demands to provide quality care, this entails catering to the individual needs of each family. The definition of quality childcare usu-

500 New Child Care Space, but... Who will work them? In April 2012 it was announced by the current government that their intention this year is to create 500 child care spaces in Saskatchewan. Initially the prospect of 500 more spaces seems practical and over-due, however the question that rings true for most daycare directors is something like this: Where will I be able to find any qualified staff? Opening more spaces is great for the parents who need to go to school or work to provide for their families, but are we doing them any favors by opening facilities with very few staff with the proper qualifications? As Early Childhood Education Directors, we agree that childcare spaces are required. Many of us have extensive waiting lists with 100’s of families wait-

COUNCIL REPORTS TOWN OF ASQUITH
TOWN OF DELISLE
Asquith Town Council held its regular council meeting on May 8. A request to surrounding R.M.'s to possibly cost share in holding a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day resulted in the R.M. of Eagle Creek No. 376 and the R.M. of Vanscoy No. 345 declining to participate and the R.M. of Corman Park No. 344 agreeing to contribute $1,900 towards a collection day. As the cost is too prohibitive for two municipalities to hold one, the idea has been abandoned. VCM Construction will be finishing the ground work around the new water plant, and gravelling the alley behind the plant. The Asquith Volunteer Fire Department welcomed two new members into their fold, Rob Hegedus and Ron Hyggen. The Fire Department has been busy attending grass fires, as well as doing controlled burns to negate fire hazards from tall, dead grass. A reminder goes out to all in the community that controlled burns on acreages and farms need to be reported by phoning 1-866-822-8522. Failure to do so could result in the Fire Department being called to your fire and you will be liable for the costs of the fire call. Also, please exercise extreme caution at this time of year when not everything has greened up. A bit of wind and some dry grass can quickly get out of control. Some green ash boulevard trees have been planted around Town, and along the perimeter of the newest part of the Asquith Cemetery. The Asquith Co-operative Association paid for ten of the trees at the cemetery and assisted with the planting of all of the trees there. What a fantastic, community-minded group! Councillor Sawicki attended the semi-annual meeting of the Wheatland Regional Library. She reported that those wishing to download electronic books for their Kindles or Kobos can do so using their Wheatland Regional Library card. The annual report was presented to Council. Charles Chappell was awarded the contract for Sports Grounds Maintenance. The Town of Asquith has proclaimed June to be Recreation & Parks Month. Get out to enjoy playing baseball or soccer at our sports grounds. Take a stroll thru Burwell Park and peruse the Wall of Memory ~ if you want, it isn't too late to get your family's name on the Wall! The Town will be sponsoring Crime Stoppers for $200, and the Town will be renewing its membership with the Saskatoon Regional Economic Development Authority.
Delisle Town Council held a regular meeting on May 8. A $200 donation was made to the Saskatchewan Crime Stopers program. Council approved a Work Authorization for AECOM to prepare the conceptual design of the proposed annexation area. The Town of Delisle designates the month of June as ‘June is Recreation & Parks Month’, in recognition of the benefits and values that recreation, parks and leisure services provide. The Town encourages owners to do a spring clean up of their property. This includes cleaning up pet feces that has accumulated over the winter. Please also clean up after your pets when you take them for a walk. Dogs and cats are also not allowed to be running at large. If so caught, pound fees will be charged. The Town asks that homeowners trim the grass in back alleys. also, trim all trees and shrubs back to the property line, including the front street.
RM OF VANSCOY The Scrap Tire Clean Up was a huge success. Over 8000 tires were collected. Thank you to the Vanscoy Multiple 4-H for their help with this project. The RM transfer stations do not accept shingles. Allrock, located at 120 71st Street West in Saskatoon will accept clean shingles at a cost of $55 per tonne. The shingles they receive are recycled there and get put back into asphalt. The road bans have been removed except for grid #672 running south of Highway #14 at Grandora corner to Highway #7 at Vanscoy and Range Road #3072 between Highway #7 and Highway #14. Council will be accepting tenders for their fall mowing. Sealed tenders will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. Any questions please contact Jerome @ 281-7571. Council is requesting your cooperation in keeping your property neat and tidy. This includes buildings, overgrown property with grass and weeds, untidy and unsightly property, junked vehicles and open excavations on property. Council approved ten applications for development and building permits at their May 8th meeting. The next meeting of Council will be held on Tuesday June 12.
VILLAGE OF VANSCOY What to do in the case of an emergency? Anyone know? Please refer to the EMO Coordinator’s letter in this edition of the paper. Back lane clean up is now being done. Place your branches and yard waste in the alley for pick up. Reminder to residents regarding the Nuisance Abatement Bylaw. The Village has regulations regarding overgrown grass and weeds, outdoor storage of materials, junked vehicles (including ones that are in working order and are not licensed). Letters of contravention will be sent to anyone who is not complying with the bylaw; and generally will have 30 days to remedy. The Village will take action to correct the contravention and anyone not in compliance after the 30 days will have the cost added to the taxes on the property. There were two skunks trapped and removed last week; there are probably more. The first step to avoiding this problem in your yard is to remove anything they may be getting into or attracting them. There are still dogs in the Village who are not licensed or registered. The bylaw states the fees for registering dogs is $30. The fee is $15 per dog if paid in January of each year. The bylaw also states the penalties for not registering your dog $75 per dog. Letters will be sent to any resident who owns or harbors a dog that is not licensed. Any fees remaining unpaid will be added to the taxes of the property. A public meeting was held May 23 at the hall. The purpose of the meeting was to elect an interim Recreation Board. The annual general meeting will be in October, as in the past. There were only 11 people in attendance; however a new Rec Board executive was elected: President – Brett Laroche Vice President – Paul Yanko Secretary – Denise Robert Thanks to the others who attended and to those who have signed up to sit on the Shiver Dome Committee to ensure an artificial ice plant will be installed before the upcoming hockey season begins. n April 27th, a group of 10 youth and 6 adults from Delisle and Vanscoy United Churches met at the Build-a-Bear Workshop in Midtown Mall in Saskatoon. Their mission – to build teddy bears for the Delisle fire department to give to child victims of trauma. The firefighters keep a collection of cuddly friends on hand, so that when they respond to a call where children are in-
volved, they can offer some tangible comfort in the form of a stuffed animal. Recently, the fire department announced that its supply of teddy bears was getting low. The United Church youth group responded to this call by making 16 bears – all stuffed with love – which they donated to the fire department on May 6th. Each bear has within it a little red heart, placed there by hand by the person who made the bear.
As the youth put the hearts inside the bears, they each named one thing they thought a child in a traumatic situation might need – such as strength, comfort, community, prayers, love, hope, peace... That's what is inside each of those bears. The youth group also gave a special bear to the members of the fire department, thanking them for all they do to keep our communities safe.

SCHOOL NEWS
DELISLE COMPOSITE SCHOOL With the approach of June, it is hard to believe that another school year is winding to a close. The final exam schedule is posted around the building and at the office. Students and parents are able to access their attendance and marks using the Powerschool program. Students use their regular logon information to access it. Parents can get their own code - sheets for each individual student are at the office. Congratulations to our 2012 grads as well. Graduation is on June 28. The SRC has had a busy month. They ran the booth at the local track meet and will be having SRC elections in the beginning of June. They also held a very successful wake-a-thon with the proceeds to the family of Kolbjorn Friggstad of Outlook. As reported several times in the RM Review, Kol had brain cancer and sadly he passed away on May 21. The grade 8 class travelled to Harry Bailey pool in Saskatoon to compete in cardboard box boat races. Congratulations to Cody, Quyn, Jami, and Dara as overall winners. busiest. Under the direction of Mrs. Wirz, Ms. Hill, and Mrs. Kooy, a huge delegation of kids participated in track! We held our local meet on May 8th. The weather cooperated in providing us with ideal conditions. From our local meet we sent 92 athletes on to compete in the conference meet at Griffith Stadium on May 16th. 68 athletes moved on to compete in the district meet on May 25th. The top two competitors from each event will move on to Provincials this year, which will be held in Saskatoon on June 1st and 2nd. The last Coffee House evening of the year will be on May 31 at 7pm. This variety show features singing, instrumentals, dancing, juggling, and more, plus dessert!! Admission is $5 for students or seniors; $6 for adults; or $20 for a family. Preschool kids are always free. Come out for this great night of entertainment. Although prom was also scheduled for the end of May, due to low preticket sales, it was cancelled. The school Color Night (awards night) will be on Wednesday, June 13. Displays of student work are always set up
beforehand, with the program beginning at 7pm. The awards cover all aspects of DCS life, such as high academic awards, athletics, citizenship, and subject specific awards, just to name a few. Everyone is welcome to attend. And now some congratulations! The senior girls basketball season has been finished for a bit, but they recently held their awards and wind-up banquet. PIKE LAKE SCHOOL Our 2011-2012 school year is winding down – can you believe it? With the hum of activities and excitement, our final days together are flying by even faster! In the last chapters of our school year we have experienced watching eggs hatch into chicks and currently, we are marveling at how larvae transforms into butterflies. Thanks to the University of Saskatchewan Ecology Camp we got to hold and came to appreciate the importance of bats to our environment. Moreover we had the opportunity to build bat houses to help our bat friends continue their important job of getting rid of pesky mosquitoes. Learning through nature also continues as our garden has been planted, our playground has been cleaned and rocks, bugs and baby animals are being studied. Rain or shine, the students and staff at Pike Lake School are starting to explore instruction in the great outdoors! Outdoor classroom instruction presents a variety of unique challenges to overcome such as the wind, rain, sun, cold and various creatures (big and small) to name a few. However the students are benefiting from the many hands on activities , authentic practices and unique problem solving opportunities which can arise from the outdoor learning
environment. Utilizing nature to teach the curriculum allows for memorable discovery and retention of valuable lifetime knowledge for our students. We are so fortunate to be able to study and learn from the wonderful environment right in our own backyard! We invite you to come down and keep watch of how our garden grows and how our outdoor learning environment is being adapted in order to better facilitate our young people’s learning. As the school year comes to close, we at Pike Lake School are not only thankful for the wonderful learning opportunities and environment which we enjoy but also for the wonderful community that is so supportive of our school. Our gratitude goes out especially to the Pike Lake Community & School Assoc. (PLCSA) who has supported the school in so many ways again this year. Through the use of the hall, providing treat bags and good eats at special events, and for setting up wonderful soccer nets for student to play soccer at recess to mention only a few. The work that the PLCSA does to the support the community and our school truly helps our community to be a wonderful one in which to live, to learn, and to grow. Looking ahead to next year the Pike Lake SCC is
pleased to announce the development of a before and after school program to support our families. The SCC has had discussions with various organizations to run this program for us. The discussions have been extremely positive and the plan is to proceed with a program for our school in the fall of 2012. This is exciting news which we hope will work to support parents/guardians and bring students to our school. Please contact the school if you have any questions regarding this or any other program that our school is developing. Between the tour and classroom sessions, participants will assist in developing grazing plans for this ranch. For a complete agenda and registration details, please visit the Saskatchewan Forage Council website at www.saskforage.ca. interested producers should register as soon as possible. 4 - H News Laura Multiple 4-H It is hard to believe, but another 4-H year is coming to a close. We will be getting ready for our Achievement Day that will take place June 10th at 2:00pm at Laura Hall. Come check out the displays and try your hand at judging. Everyone is welcome to attend. On May 6th we had our Murder Mystery supper. It was Murder Under the Big Top!! We all had lots of fun dressing up with the Circus theme and trying to guess who done it. We enjoyed a potluck supper as well with the evening. This is an all time favorite activity. As the year draws to a close I would like to thank everyone that works so hard to make 4-H fun. There are a lot of people that volunteer their time to help lead our projects and run our club. 4H would not be possible without you. A special thank you to our members and their families for making a commitment to the program. Hope to see everyone again next year. By Eryn Kielo Laura Multiple 4-H Reporter
Vanscoy Multiple 4-H The Vanscoy Multiple 4-H Club spent a busy month fundraising by collecting tires for the RM of Vanscoy. They will purchase hoodies with some of the proceeds. Members volunteered to help at the Vanscoy & District Ag Society Perennial Exchange on May 10. They will also volunteer at the annual fair in August. Judging day was May 26, where they all judged sheep, photography and a mystery class, which turned out to be grain. Members are busy finishing record books and studying for their questionnaires. The club will have another Petting Zoo at senior’s home Primrose Chateau in Saskatoon on June 16. Achievement Day is planned for June 23 10am - 5pm at the Vanscoy Circle Hall Sandy Hills Light Horse On Friday May 11 & Saturday May 12, the Sandy Hills Light Horse 4-H Club got together at the Gardner's for a sleepover trail ride. After getting the horses settled in for the night, we played games and watched an educational video on horseman-
ship, then we went outside for some more fun and games until about 9:00pm when we went in and watched War Horse. In the morning we had a belly filling breakfast of homemade waffles and fruit made by Pam Yanko. After breakfast we went on a beautiful trail ride in the Sandy Hills. We got back to the house around noon. Everyone pitched in to make the lunch with the boys doing the barbecuing. It was another delicious meal. After lunch we had guest instructor Karen Coates give us an introduction to jumping clinic. All members rode in an English saddle and then went over poles and learned to jump. For some, it was the very first time they had sat in an english saddle. By the end of the lesson, everyone had something to go home and work on with their horses. It was an awesome day filled with fun and education. Members are preparing for Achievement Day which will be held on June 18 at Gardners. By Taylor Gardner

Ministry approves Martensville project
T
he expansion and renovation of Martensville High School has been given the green light to move into the detailed design stage. This Ministry of Education approval was crucial to move the project forward from concept to design and construction. Prairie Spirit School Division received official confirmation about the project from the Ministry on May 11. The conceptual design phase will involve school and community consultation sessions which will lead to the detailed architectural design. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2016. The expansion to the high school is expected to more than double the size of the current high school facility, adding approximately 50,000 square feet to the building. The Ministry has projected a
cost of $26.3 million for the construction and renovation project. Because the expansion of the high school will provide more classroom spaces, students from the two elementary schools in Martensville will move to the high school facility. This reconfiguration of grades will benefit the elementary schools in Martensville that are experiencing tremendous enrolment growth and overcrowding. The details of this grade reconfiguration have not yet been finalized but could include moving Grade 7 and 8 students from the elementary schools to the expanded high school. The elementary schools in Martensville have had numerous relocatables added to accommodate growing
enrolments. Both elementary schools had relocatables added during the 2011/12 school year. “The expanded high school will provide a much needed long-term solution to ensure the necessary learning spaces for our students and we are excited about it,” said Larry Pavloff, Board Chair. “We just wish the project could be completed much sooner for the sake of students and staff.” The growth in the elementary schools in Martensville reflects the growth in the City itself. According to the recent federal census, Martensville is the second fastest growing city in the country, with a population of over 7700. Prairie Spirit anticipates an increase of 5% in student enrolment in Martensville each year. The expanded school
will be designed to accommodate between 750 - 800 students. The two elementary schools currently have a total of over 1100 students from PreKindergarten through Grade 8. The high school’s current enrolment is over 340. “As a Board, we are thrilled to receive Ministry approval to proceed with this project,” said Bonnie Hope, Trustee for Martensville. “This expanded high school facility will be an exciting addition to the City of Martensville.” The high school project was given the highest priority in the Ministry of Education’s Critical Space Shortage category in July, 2011. The Board of Education has also formally applied to the Ministry for another elementary school in Martensville.

Duck Lake School project makes progress
lthough considerable progress has been made in the construction at Stobart School in Duck Lake, the second phase of the project will not be completed by the start of the new school year in August, 2011. Despite the delay, students in Duck Lake will continue to have uninterrupted access to all educational programming. “Our goal is to move into the second phase of the project once construction is complete,” explained Jim Shields, Superintendent of Finance and Administration with Prairie Spirit School Division. “We have made significant gains in construction in Phase Two. Without having to work around students, construction work can continue unhindered.” “We know when the school is completely done it will be incredible,” said Reg Nicolas, Principal of
Stobart Community School. “However, we don’t want to move in until the facility is 100% completed. It’s just not conducive for education to have kids in an unfinished area under construction,” he explained. High school students will continue
to use the old elementary school until the construction of the new school is complete. Students in PreKindergarten through Grade 6 moved into the new elementary wing in February.
The $18.9 million project in Duck Lake involves the substantial expansion and renovation of the existing high school to include Pre-K through Grade 12 students. The Home Economics and Industrial Arts classrooms in the high school, built in the 1980s, were preserved, along with the recently renovated gymnasium. The rest of the high school was demolished. Once construction of the new school is complete, Stobart Elementary School will also be demolished. The project started in the fall of 2009. Nicolas praised the Duck Lake students and staff for their patience through the construction project. “Our
students and staff have been very accommodating and incredibly patient through all the construction,” he said. Nicolas pointed out that the elementary students have a lengthy walk from the new school to their playground behind the old elementary school. The senior students have a long walk from their temporary classes in the old elementary school over to the Home Economics and Industrial Arts rooms in the high school building. Nicolas also added that the caretakers at both schools have had considerable additional work with the effects of construction, especially mud tracked in from the construction areas. “The caretakers deserve a medal!” he said. The adult education area, Little Ducklings Day Care, Home Economics and Industrial Arts areas will be entirely completed by late August. The new school includes a group of offices for the nurse practitioner, public health nurse, addictions counsellor and other services provided by the Saskatoon Health Region. The school will also house the Wapiti Regional Library and the Northwest Regional College, which provides adult education programming. The school will also offer an expanded Practical and Applied Arts program, including commercial cooking and other practical job skills.

slight sound took my attention from the slide I was examining on my microscope and caused me to look up. The source of the sound was a two thousand pound, sweated up, stressed out, irate bull that stood two feet away on the other side of my desk glaring at me. I nervously looked around for an escape route in the tiny ten by ten room and wondered what on earth did I get into this time? The bull in question was being sent to the USA to convey some good Saskatchewan genetics into a herd down there. He was long and deep and two years old. His sour disposition made him more suited for the Mid-Western ranching country than on this particular purebred operation. Generally the bulls on this farm can be driven on foot up to the barn and cajoled by hand into the squeeze. This bull had been born elsewhere and was quite a bit more nervous as he was cautiously brought, head high, into the barn. The long barn had overhead doors at both ends. The bull squeeze was at one end next to an equipment room and the office where I had set up my microscope and paperwork. The bulls would generally leave the chute and then, as
the overhead door in front of them was closed, would turn and proceed back out the door they had come in. We finally got the US bound bull into the squeeze and started processing him. We poked and prodded him, branding, tagging, bleeding and drawing samples while he stomped, snorted, and glared at us from the safe confines of the squeeze. Finally we finished with him and I walked back to the small room beside the chute and plunked myself into a chair behind the desk to start examining his samples. The boys were out front opening the gates and readying the barn for the worked-up bull’s departure and the last thing I remember was the call to “Let him
out!” The tiny room I was in had one door into it and one small sealed window. It was empty except for a few boxes lying around the desk I occupied. The bull towered above my desk and looked straight at me as I slowly stood up and pondered my options. The door was open behind him, but in order to reach it, I would have to race down the side of the bull without him spinning and blocking my exit. As the low probability of success for this idea of escape bounced around in my head, the bull swung his butt a quarter turn to look out the window and like a housewife closing the fridge with her hip slammed the door and my only exit shut. Now the fetal position
started sounding good and as I shrunk my body as small and unobtrusive as possible behind the desk and avoided eye contact. I started to weigh the odds of not getting trampled if this bull, now locked in a ten by ten room, decided to start wrecking things. Just before I was going to start to cry, the bull’s owner, with good sense, pushed the door open with his show cane. The door swung inward, just brushing the bull’s rear-end and caused him to look over his shoulder. Seeing the open door, he spun, hip checking the desk as he went, and walked out leaving me shaking in a puddle of pee (I told the farmer the bull had peed in the room and I think he believed me).

Tall Ship Sailing for Prairie Spirit Students
T
wo students from Prairie Spirit School Division recently had a chance to participate in an incredible adventure. In March, Kelsey Derksen (Borden School) and Brad Milton (Delisle Composite) were part of a five-day trip on a tall ship off Vancouver Island. Approximately 30 people travelled together on the tall ship, including deaf and hard of hearing students (aged 13 to 18) from around Saskatchewan, their interpreters and seven ship crew members. The trip was facilitated through the Saskatchewan Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services
(SDHHS) organization. Brad, 13 years old and in grade 8, is a cadet with experience in sailing small sailboats. He was the youngest student on the trip and pointed out that he was the first to climb to the top of the sails of the tall ship!
Kelsey is 17 years old and in Grade 11. She enjoys boating on the lake in the summertime. They are both hard of hearing but do not use sign language as their main means of communication. Kelsey and Brad heard about this opportunity through SDHHS at the

Brad said the students were to be clipped on in a harness at all times on the boat. Brad and Kelsey agreed it was good to get members of the deaf and hard of hearing community together. “It was hard to communicate,” Brad fered at the incredible cost said. “We had interpreters of $60. We would work together and then realize that we did it without talking,” Brad explained. Since neither uses sign language as their primary mode of communication, they enjoyed the chance to learn a new skill in signing. The students said they would certainly recommend this type of opportunity to other students. As part of their participation in the trip, they will both make presentations to their schools about their adventure. Lana Abercrombie, the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Special Education Resource Teacher for Prairie Spirit School Division, works with students throughout the Division. She was very pleased to have two Prairie Spirit students participate in this opportunity. “What an experience!” she enthused. “What an opportunity for these students to have exposure to other students and leadership opportunities.” Abercrombie said she appreciates the resources available to students through the SDHHS organization.

rime Minister Stephen Harper and Mrs. Laureen Harper welcomed Their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall at the Fort York Armoury in Toronto this week for an event honouring the men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces and the historic 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812. Also in attendance were Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence, and General Walter Natynczyk, Chief of Defence Staff. In commemoration of the War of 1812, the four Canadian Army regiments with links to the Battalion of Incorporated Militia of Upper Canada, which

The homes will be targeted to low-income families and families new to Canada. "Our Government believes that all Canadians need a stable, safe and affordable place to call home," said MP Block. Saskatchewan. Under the agreement, the Province of Saskatchewan will use the funds to create new and renovate existing affordable housing for households in need. The Government of Canada, through CMHC, will invest more than $2 billion in housing this year. Of this amount, $1.7 billion will be spent in support of almost 605,000 households living in existing social housing. In Saskatchewan, this represents some 29,900 households. These investments are improving the quality of life for low-income Canadians and households living in existing social housing, including individuals who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness, seniors, persons with disabilities, recent immigrants and Aboriginal people.

MLA REPORT
May 23, 2012 Randy Weekes, MLA Our government continues to make progress toward keeping an important promise we made that has implications for the health and safety for your family. The Year Two progress report from the Saskatchewan Surgical Initiative (SkSI) shows we are on track to meet our commitment to provide all patients with the opportunity to have surgery within three month by 2014. We decided early in our first term to make your healthcare a priority and that hasn't changed. The SkSI Two Year progress report shows that 97 per cent of surgeries in Saskatchewan were completed within 12 months. Since the Saskatchewan Party took office in 2007, the number of patients waiting more than 18 months for surgery has dropped by an impressive 91 per cent. These reductions mean real results for Saskatchewan people that were waiting far too long under the NDP to receive the surgery they needed. We have come a long way in the last five years, but we know there is still more work to do. That is why this year's budget we invested $60.5 million to
continue to drive down surgical wait times. In fact, this funding will provide more than 4,000 additional surgeries this year. Our commitment to putting the patient first can be further seen in almost $17 million more for the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency which will help pay for 30,000 chemotherapy treatments, 39,000 mammograms and 6,000 new patient referrals this year alone. We have invested $4 million to expand the colorectal screening cancer program province-wide, providing early detection and saving lives. Today, there are 900 more nurses and 200 more doctors working in Saskatchewan than there were five years ago. Today in Saskatchewan, rural and remote areas have improved access to emergency services thanks to our partnership with the STARS Air Ambulance, which started flying the province's skies earlier in the spring. Thirteen new long-term care centres to improve the quality of life for Saskatchewan's seniors are moving forward with planning and construction underway. We have made going to medical school more accessible and affordable for young men and women who want to be-
come doctors and nurses, through our graduate retention and student loan forgiveness programs and increased training opportunities. The Saskatchewan Advantage we talked about in the budget is about more though than just a balanced bottom line. It's about more than growth for growth's sake - it has to be if Saskatchewan is going to retain her place as a "have" province in Confederation. The Saskatchewan Advantage is about improving the quality of life for everyone. It is about taking action to protect the advantage created by your hard work - ensuring our province remains the best place in Canada to live, work and raise a family. To that end, Premier Brad Wall has charged MLAs to go out this summer and consult with constituents and community groups to find out how you think we can best meet the challenges of growth and opportunity. Our goal is to, with your help, make sure the historic economic and population growth we've enjoyed over the past five years continues. We want to find out three things: 1) What should the government's long-term
Food for Thought ‘Oh, the Excitement’
C.M. (Red) Williams The Canadian Feed Research Centre has a new piece of equipment in its facility at North Battleford. It is called a BoMill TriQ 30 NIR Seed Sorter, one of four in the world and the first installation in North America. It was built in Sweden and provides state of the art capacity to sort wheat, durum and barley, for protein level, freedom from cracked, discoloured or diseased kernels. The Centre is working on removing sprouted kernels in wheat that would increase it’s value $100 per tonne. On the other hand a sample of feed barley can be separated
to recover the malting grade fraction. As you can imagine this equipment doesn’t come cheap: about $400,000, plus another $100,000 to install it. It operates at about three tonnes per hour so a large mill would probably install a bank of ten machines to process 25,000 metric tonnes/year. The operating principle is actually very simple but devilishly clever: each kernel is individually scanned many times and as it sits in an individual hole of a revolving drum a little puff of air directs it to one of three outlets. The Centre is also
working on separate drums for other classes of grain and is co-operating with other laboratories and mills. The Canadian Feed Research Centre will now have the capacity to remove fusarium and ergot, provide research samples of narrow specifications for protein, and provide pure samples of durum free of spring wheat, as examples. This new facility at North Battleford will put the Canadian feed industry at the cutting edge of developing value added products from our basic crops that need to capture new markets.

goals be? 2) What strategies or policies should the government pursue to achieve those goals? 3) What short-term measures can the government take to address some of the more immediate challenges of growth? If you need any further information regarding this summer's consultations, or would like to schedule a meeting with me, don't hesitate to give the office a call or send us an email. Together, we will maintain the Saskatchewan Advantage.
