The Vanscoy & District Agricultural Society faced significant challenges in being able to continue with their fair, but thought outside the box and teamed up with Fall Fest, in nearby community Delisle, to “Bring Back the Fair”. This was one of the Saskatchewan Association of Agricultural Fairs and Exhibitions (SAASE) successful Venture Projects from last year, as Vanscoy was able to redevelop their fair by working with another community.

You Can’t Argue with ‘Figures’ !

The Village of Vanscoy

I

have done the math and it doesn’t look good. Over the winter this newspaper became skinnier, while at the same time I have become fatter ! I’ve gained about one pound for every page the newspaper has lost. So it only makes sense that if I fatten up the newspaper, I will lose weight... do the math. This month we added four pages, and I look forward to losing four pounds. If it works... I will consider adding four more pages to the next issue. And if that works.... well let’s just see how the first month goes ! Ken Sowter - Editor

After Undefeated Season with Delisle Rebels Edan Duncan Joined Saskatchewan Selects at Pig Skin Classic Tournament in San Antonio (continued from front page)

E

dan Duncan (currently in grade 11) and the Delisle Rebels won the 9 Man provincials hosted in Delisle in November after an undefeated season. Edan was named the senior offensive linemen at the award banquet. He had a very dominate season at center and nose tackle as well the teams long snapper. In November Edan attended the Saskatchewan Selects tryouts in Moose Jaw. He made the Varsity team as a defensive end and was voted defensive line captain. This was Edan’s 4th season with the Selects where he also played as long snapper. The Selects traveled to San Antonio over the February school break to attend the 7th annual Pig Skin Classic Tournament. In all four Selects teams participated in the trip. The U10, U12, U14 and Varsity teams. There were over 120 athletes from Saskatchewan. All game were played as 11 man American football. The first game was Friday, February the 22nd. Under the lights in Texas, the Saskatchewan Selects’ varsity team opened the 2019 International Pigskin Classic with a 14-6 win over the California MB Elite on Friday night.

Their first game in San Antonio wasn’t without its missteps, but the Selects put together a strong defensive performance, which included six forced turnovers to come away with the win. The Varsity Selects won their second straight game, beating Mexico, 22-5, on Saturday afternoon to book their ticket back into the final.

April 2nd - 6th, 2019

The Selects faced the host Alamo City Red Raiders for the championship on Sunday night for the second straight year. It was a hard fought battle but the Selects came up short with a 26-6 loss to the host Alamo City Red Raiders. The games were very physical and Edan matched up well against the O linemen with several tackles and QB sacs. At the Selects awards banquet March 9th in Regina Edan was named the Most Outstanding Lineman.

OVERLAND FLOOD INSURANCE AND ThE PROVINCIAL DISASTER ASSISTANCE PROGRAM

ost insurance companies are now offering flood insurance to homeowners in Saskatchewan as an optional extension similar to Sewer Backup under your home insurance policy. This recent development may affect your eligibility for financial assistance under the Provincial Disaster Assistance Program (PDAP) in the near future with an announcement expected soon from the Government of Saskatchewan. PDAP currently provides assistance for uninsurable losses of essential goods to help people get back to predisaster condition, with specific limits on the amount of maximum assistance that can be provided. PDAP is meant to provide financial assistance to eligible Saskatchewan homeowners that face natural disaster events where insurance is not available at a reasonable cost. Many of the new private flood insurance options available allow you to choose the amount of coverage (such as a $50,000 limit), the basis of claim settlement (more specifically Replacement Cost which is not available through PDAP) and the deductible that best meets

your individual needs. PDAP will no longer provide financial assistance to homeowners for losses associated with flood damage once private insurance is readily available which is fast approaching! All homeowners need to review their options for flood insurance to ensure they are getting adequate coverage for their properties, if it is available for their specific location and at a reasonable cost. Mooney Agencies is an independent insurance broker, working for you rather than an insurance company or financial institution. We will properly assess your general insurance needs, shop for the best value in coverage and help you in the event of a claim. Mooney Agencies provides specialized advice for your farm or acreage, along with providing home, auto and commercial insurance solutions anywhere in Saskatchewan from our 3 locations in Vanscoy, Colonsay and Young. We are available to meet at your home, acreage, farm or business by appointment. Please introduce yourself to your Mooney Agencies insurance team – Stephanie & Landry Klapwijk, Della O’Hara, Danielle Thiessen and Courtney Klapwijk.

New Website Focuses On Canadian-Grown Food

A

new online resource will go live on March 20 that highlights Canadian food stories.

CanadianFoodFocus explores how food is grown and raised, shares recipes and provides useful advice to help people make confident food choices. Research from the Canadian Centre for Food Integrity shows that consumers look for information about their food from friends, family and social media. CanadianFoodFocus is intended to connect with consumers in a fun, conversational manner and provide the information they are looking for about their food. Articles from expert contributors are organized into the following themes: • In Your Kitchen: articles written by food professionals about cooking with Canadian ingredients • Recipes: a series of articles with recipes supplied by Canadian farm organizations • Health: articles written by dietitians about healthy eating • Canadian Food Stories: articles about Canadian foods and food producers • On the Farm: behind-the-scenes photos and video from farmers

Although Saskatchewan is leading this initiative, the project is national in scope. Visit CanadianFoodFocus.org and follow ‘CDNFoodFocus’ on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and ‘Canadian Food Focus’ on Pinterest and Youtube.

“Our goal is to create understanding and grow a community around the amazing food that we enjoy here in Canada,” said Clinton Monchuk, Executive Director with Farm & Food Care Saskatchewan, the organization leading this project. “Consumers naturally have questions about their food and how it is grown. Meanwhile, farmers, ranchers, processors and others along the food value chain want to engage with consumers to learn what they are looking for and to be transparent about the ways they produce food. It’s all about having conversations about the thing that brings us together across the country: our food.”

Restoring 71 Project

W

The Suek Family Habitat Conservation Project

ith spring just around the corner, the Suek family is gearing up for another busy growing and nesting season at their habitat conservation project site northeast of Grandora. The initiative is called the Restoring 71 Project and aims to restore 71 acres of mostly inaccessible farmland to natural prairie habitat for a variety of wildlife and plant species. The project methodology is basic: let it grow. When the Sueks bought the land in 2014, they weren’t sure exactly what they should “do” with it since the back 40 acres were only accessible at the time by foot and ATV and another 20 acres were under water. After pondering their options for a couple years, they began to notice just how much the landscape was changing. Where there were mostly weeds, a sea of wild flowers started to poke through. Walls of willow and aspen grew in areas where brome and wheatgrass had long claimed their stake. The cattails started to tremble with the sound of flitting sparrows if anyone walked past, and the once quiet evenings where the odd duck or frog would let out a call had become an orchestra of sound so deafening at times that it seemed impossible to isolate the sound of the birds from the frogs, coyotes, and insects, all in competition to prove themselves the loudest of the night dwellers. The simple act of doing nothing had allowed for something magnificent to take place. While the name “Restoring 71” suggests taking action of sorts, the success of the project is hinged on a willingness to stand back and let the land regenerate itself, only offering to lend a hand here and there with strategic disturbance, removal of invasive species, and native species plantings. The Restoring 71 Project monitors the species that occupy the site over time as the land regenerates and adapts itself to changing climate trends, and share the beauty of the land as it makes that transformation. Creating sustainable partnerships is also an important consideration for the Project. Before launching the Restoring 71 Project, the Sueks had no training or experience restoring habitat and had to learn as they went. Luckily, there are several programs available in Saskatchewan, designed specifically for rural land owners, to offer resources, training, and funding to help protect and monitor wildlife and sensitive habitat on their land. Restoring 71 recently joined the Stewards of Saskatchewan, a program operated by Nature Saskatchewan that partners with rural land owners to

provide them resources and support to conserve existing habitat features on their land for at-risk plant and wildlife species. The project is also a member of Nature Saskatchewan’s Shrubs for Shrikes program, which protects habitat for the loggerhead shrike, a threatened bird with declining numbers that thrives in shrubby areas and shelter belts adjacent to short grass prairies, and which often nests on the Restoring 71 Project site. Restoring 71 also recently signed up for the One School One Farm program. It aims to partner rural farmers, who could benefit from shelterbelts and pollinator strips, with urban schools whose students are interested in learning about, designing, and planting trees and wildflowers in a way that supports wildlife and provides benefit to farming operations. Restoring 71 is currently in the process of becoming a registered archaeological site after a roughly 3500 year old projectile point was discovered on site in 2018. Presence of the point suggests that this area may have always been a wildlife hotspot, which may be due, at least in part, to its location between two ancient glacial channels (ancient rivers) that connected the North Saskatchewan River to the South Saskatchewan River via Rice Lake. Today, the remnants of these ancient rivers are evident in the unique habitat features, including the West Swale and forested area NW of the Cory mine site, that developed in their place as the meltwater subsided. Understanding the history of the area helps Restoring 71 predict the habitat types and species that occurred prior to agricultural development and may re-emerge as the land regenerates. Since 2017, over 85 wildlife species and 33 native plant species have been observed at the Restoring 71 site, with at least 10 of these species considered species of conservation concern and are protected in Saskatchewan. The Sueks use an app called iNaturalist and social media groups to help identify species. Observations, educational resources, and onsite photography are shared on the Restoring 71 website, www.restoring71.home.blog, and various social media outlets, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube. In the fall of 2018, the Restoring 71 Project opened its trails to the public (by appointment) for nature wanders, plant harvesting, and site tours. Please visit the website or Facebook page to learn more. The Sueks love to connect with people in the area doing similar work and invite anyone interested in connecting to email the project at restoring71@gmail.com.

MP REPORTS

L

ast week I toured Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek, the riding I have the honour of representing in the House of Commons. Over the course of the week and the dozens of conversations, a number of concerns were raised on a wide range of issues. However, there were some definite themes that emerged. Carbon Tax Constituents are concerned about the impact of the cost of the carbon tax and how it will impact Canadian competitiveness. Additionally, farmers are concerned and confused by how this new tax will be applied to fuels purchased at card-lock stations. They want to see it repealed and are pleased to know that a future Conservative Government led by Andrew Scheer will do just that. The carbon tax is set to be added to fuel on April 1st. The tax will increase the cost of gasoline by approximately 5 cents per litre in April – gradually rising from there to 12 cents per litre in 2022 – while also increasing the cost of diesel and home heating. The carbon tax is simply a tax grab. In Saskatchewan, driving is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. Andrew Scheer and the Conservatives have commitment to end the carbon tax a move that will save taxpayers hundreds of dollars each year. Canola Exports Many constituents are greatly concerned about Justin Trudeau’s failure in handling the Canada-China relationship. This was brought close to home when China recently cancelled import permits for Canadian canola.

April 2019

www.rmreview.net

Kelly Block, MP March 3, 2019

The issue is not Canada’s canola product as alleged by the Chinese government. Canada produces the best canola in the world. In Ottawa on Monday, Conservatives tried to have the Minister of Foreign Affairs attend either the Ag Committee or the Foreign Affairs Committee in order to explain how the Government is dealing with this situation but the Liberals used their majority to block this from happening. Canada’s Conservatives call on the Liberal government to stand up for Canada’s canola industry and demand that the Chinese government stop these baseless actions against Canada’s agriculture sector. Prime Minister Trudeau has a personal responsibility to take action and resolve this dispute with China, and can start by appointing a new Ambassador right away. SNC-Lavalin Scandal Constituents are following the SNC-Lavalin scandal which has rocked the Trudeau government for over a month. Many believe that a full public inquiry should be held to get to the bottom of this scandal. On Wednesday the Liberal members on the Justice Committee used their majority to shut down debate on a joint Conservative-NDP motion requesting that former Attorney General Jody Wilson Raybould be allowed to provide further testimony on the alleged political interference from the Prime Minister’s office into a criminal case against SNC-Lavalin. Justin Trudeau has refused to allow Wilson-Raybould to testify about anything that happened after she was

fired as Attorney General, but has allowed his former top aid, Gerry Butts, and Privy Council Clerk Michael Wernick to speak about that period. More and more details have emerged in this case over the last two weeks, which further supports Andrew Scheer’s call for a full public inquiry. Infrastructure Many constituents told me they are concerned about aging local infrastructure. These concerns were backed up by a new report by the Parliamentary Budget Officer. Last week, the PBO’s report once again confirmed that the Liberal government’s infrastructure plan is failing Canadians. The Conservative Shadow Minister, Matt Jeneroux has noted that the Liberal’s infrastructure plan fails to meet their own targets to grow the economy, create jobs, and respect taxpayers. Instead, their plan has delayed the much-needed construction of new roads, bridges and community spaces. A Conservative government lead by Andrew Scheer will put forward an infrastructure plan that not only grows the economy, but gets much needed projects built in communities across Canada.

Vanscoy & District Agricultural Society Awards (continued from front page) Achievements of the Year

honorary Life Membership

Our participation with the Delisle Harvest Festival was a fantastic opportunity for our Agricultural Society to help bring back our Fair. We were able to contribute to our local community by participating in a parade, hosting children’s entertainment (balloon twister and parachute games/songs), community bingo, and a cake celebration for our 35th anniversary. All of these engaged the community and brought community members through the doors to view the exhibits as well. Fall Fest was happy to have us add to their program and provide another opportunity to engage our community with the local festivities.

Linda Wright is this year’s recipient of a SAASE Honorary Life Membership. Linda is one of those fantastic volunteers who have done so much for their community and Agricultural Society over the years - making her community a better place to live. Linda Wright has been part of the Vanscoy Agricultural society for many years she has been a board member, President, as well as Past President. Whenever there is a job to be done, Linda can be counted on to volunteer. She helped plan the Vanscoy Agricultural Societies 30th anniversary. When Linda moved into the RM of Vanscoy in 2001 - there was a need for volunteers within the Agricultural Society - Linda took up the challenge. Over the years she has helped put together workshops, as well as develop partnerships for the Agricultural Society. Linda has volunteered for the Vanscoy Rec Board and was a founding member of the Country Quilters in Vanscoy and acted as chair for 4 years. She is passing her love of quilting on to the Vanscoy Multiple 4 H Club, as she has been the 4 H quilting leader over the past 2 years. She has been part of the Saskatoon quilt guild since 2001 and has worked on special events and projects. She has also volunteered for the Mount Royal Congregational Church. Before moving into the RM, Linda was very involved in volunteering with the school her children attended - working on fundraisers and anywhere else the school needed help Linda was co-founder of the Breast Feeding Committee of Saskatchewan. It is a provincial umbrella organization affiliated with a national organization. The group was founded in 1991 with the goal of influencing hospitals to become more baby friendly. As a nurse working in the maternity ward, Linda was able to work directly with new mothers and effect change on behalf of the Breast Feeding Committee. In 2013 Linda Wright received the Citizen of the Year Award from the RM of Vanscoy. The award was given to Linda for all the volunteer work she has done within the Vanscoy community, as well as for all the work that she has done with the Vanscoy and District Agricultural Society. Congratulations Linda on receiving this year’s SAASE Honorary Life membership.

Volunteers of the Year The Vanscoy Agricultural Society is blessed with some amazing volunteers who work tirelessly for the betterment of their Agricultural Society and their community. SAASE’s recipients of this year’s Volunteers of the Year go to Vanscoy’s team of Linda Cheney and Linda Stevens. Together these ladies worked very hard to keep the Agricultural society together when there were no other committee members. They were both instrumental in “Bringing Back the Fair” , which has rejuvenated and brought in new members, a new community and new partners to the Fair. Both can always be counted on to do what ever needs to be done. Linda Stevens is very passionate about the Safety Day Program, and has organized their safety day over the last number of years. She has moved their safety day around to different communities in the area to continue to make it work and be a success. Linda Cheney is in charge of the finances and making sure that everything always adds up. Linda Stevens is the one in charge of the Fair catalogue and Linda Cheney is the one responsible for getting the floats together for the parade. Together they make a great and effective team, SAASE congratulates Linda Cheney and Linda Stevens on being this year’s recipients of the Volunteers of the Year Award.
