Summer in Saskatchewan

ummer in Saskatchewan is short, just like this editorial. I don’t want to spend time typing away on a laptop when I can be out of doors enjoying the remaining weeks of our rapidly disappearing summer.

And you shouldn’t be spending time reading lengthy editorials when you could be outdoors partaking in a variety of local events and activities.

Down the Road

Mazatlan Bus

ou know how sometimes you can almost hear that last little gurgle of water as the world is getting flushed down the toilet?

Then there is this: The condo we were staying at in Mazatlan was about 5 miles from the downtown tourist area.

There was a bus stop right outside our condo and on the same side of the street so taking the bus downtown couldn't have been easier.

Riding a bus anywhere, and especially as a tourist, is always interesting you get to look around and see something other than the rear bumper of the distracted (challenged?) driver ahead of you, and think about something other than how to get ahead of said "driver".

(My golfing buddy calls these people "putters" - he says they are the furthest thing from a "driver" he knows.)

Riding the bus in Mazatlan has the added attraction of actually being fun.

Sometimes, a young person will get on, stay standing in the middle of the aisle and start singing. This would then get most of the bus passengers also singing along, smiling and tapping their feet. A few stops later, the singer would pass the hat and get off the bus, a few dollars to the better, and leaving the remaining passengers smiling and happy, some still humming to themselves.

Way cool.

One afternoon we took the bus downtown and spent the afternoon wandering around, enjoying the sights of the colourful displays of T-shirts and tourist souvenirs; the smells of the meat and vegetable markets, sidewalk food vendors and restaurants; and the cacophony of sounds coming from the crowds and the traffic.

There were all different kinds of people, tourists from everywhere and the locals, all together intermingled in a moving kaleidoscope of colours and apparel, genders, shapes, sizes and ages. On the street, golf-cart taxis and scooters and bicycles jockeyed for position with trucks and buses and cars, all flowing relatively drama-free with the occasional exception of the excessively plucky jay-walker.

Towards evening, we stopped at one of the sidewalk restaurants which was exuding tantalizing aromas and had a leisurely supper, afterwards strolling contentedly hand-in-hand to the bus stop to make our way back to the condo.

I paid the fare to the bus driver and spoke the name of the condo, making sure we were on the right bus. He said something back to me in Spanish that I didn't understand but the bus was already moving and being fairly cer-

tain we were on the right bus, I just nodded and smiled and walked down the aisle to sit with Mrs. B. There was a Mexican fellow sitting in the seats behind us and he must have noticed the lack of comprehension on my face when I sat down.

He tapped me on the shoulder and spoke to me in English. He said that the bus driver had said we were on the right bus but, at this time of night, it didn't go as far as our condo, it only went as far as a hotel about a mile short of where we wanted to go.

I thanked the gentleman but wasn’t concerned. I knew it would be a reasonable and pleasant walk home on a warm and pleasant evening with reasonably pleasant company.

As the bus proceeded along its route, more and more passengers got off and finally Mrs. B and I were the only passengers left.

But the bus driver didn't say anything about it being the end of the line, so we just remained seated.

And then the bus sort of took off, accelerating very quickly, going what seemed like really fast down the road, some rocking and some swaying - we couldn't figure out why the driver was going so fast (end of shift? taco time? toilet break?) - we couldn't see out the windows - it was dark outside and the bus windows were acting like mirrors - and we had no idea where along the bus route we were.

But then, just a few minutes later, the bus slowed right down, made a u-turn and pulled up to the bus stop on the other side of the road.

Obviously, the end of the line and the bus was heading back.

We got off, saying thank you, feeling a little curious about why the rush, and the bus just immediately took right off again, accelerated quickly and was gone.

We were standing there on the sidewalk, adjusting our backpacks, looking around, getting our bearings and then we realized - we were already home, we were already at our condo.

The bus driver had continued beyond his last stop and taken us, just the two of us, on this great big city bus, all the way back home, to our condo.

He hadn't needed a taco or a toilet he was just trying to stay on schedule while also saving us a long walk.

He was just being very kind and making sure we got home safely.

Wow. Major wow.

That flushing sound isn’t the world going down the toilet - that sound is me flushing with amazement and gratitude at how wonderfully kind people can be.

Nutrien Delisle Rodeo Back for 2022

he Delisle Rodeo Committee was so excited to be able to bring back the Nutrien Delisle Rodeo to our community and it did not disappoint.

The crowds, competitors and livestock all withstood the heat warnings and we put on two exciting performances. The rodeo once again featured 10 events, with

many competitors being from our hometown in Delisle. IT is always great to see our local cowboys and cowgirls compete at these events which are held right within our community.

Each evening also featured the wild pony races with some of our young up and coming cowboys and cowgirls.

The Rodeo committee would like to thank all of our sponsors once again for allowing us to make this event possible along with the countless volunteers it takes to put on an event of this calibre.

Thank you and we look forward to seeing you all back next year for more rodeo action.

TOWN OF ASQUITH

squith Town Council held its regular council meeting on July 13, 2022.

Attending was Mayor Gail Erhart, and councillors, Cecilia Mryglod, Jackie Stobbe, Wade Monks-Janzen, and Jeff Eide. Also attending was C.A.O. Kathy Picketts. The meeting was called to order by Deputy-Mayor Stobbe at 7:00 p.m.

A resolution was made to accept the council minutes from the June 8, 2022, regular council meeting.

Council made a motion to accept the June 2022 financials and June 2022 bank reconciliations as presented to them at the meeting.

Accounts Paid in the amount of $56,485.70 and Accounts Payable of $70,835.92 was accepted as presented.

The 2022 Waterworks Information Sheet was presented to council. This information is also posted on the Town’s website.

A reminder goes out to all individuals that the Town of Asquith has A Burning Bylaw which dictates that one can have a fire in town for recreational use only. Only clean wood/firewood can be burned in your fire pits - no painted/treated wood, refuse, leaves, etc. should be burned. Be kind to your neighbor and to the environment and burn only clean wood materials. Also, no bonfires are allowed - please keep the size of your backyard fires moderate.

VILLAGE OF VANSCOY The 2022 Tax Roll has been completed and the Notices were mailed July 5. The mortgage notices were also mailed to the appropriate companies for payment. If you did not receive your Tax Notice, contact the Village Office for another copy.

Residents are reminded about the regulations regarding parking. Bylaw 5-19 states that “No person shall park a vehicle on a street or in a lane so as to obstruct the entrance to the lane or street”; “No person shall park an unregistered vehicle on any street”; and “No person shall park a boat, motor home, RV or utility trailer on any street longer than a period of seven days without prior written permission”.

Construction is progressing on the Distribution System Upgrade project. Reservoir 1 is currently out of service and contractors are awaiting the results of the bacteriological testing from the WSA. The next phase will take Reservoir 2 (the large reservoir) out of service until repair and connections are completed. A further update on the project will be sent out with the next utility billing. For those that receive billings by email, they should be done August 3; residents that receive the billing by mail should receive the notice

by August 5.

ouncil held a special meeting on July 5th in place of the regular meeting that had been scheduled for July 12th.

The dead trees in Harold Worth Park will be replaced and water bags will be purchased to help the new trees get established.

The Town Foreman was given a budget of $8,000 to purchase a new self-propelled mower.

The following appointments were made to the Delisle Wheatland Library board: Town Representative – Amanda Alkestrup, Member at Large – Valerie Dyck.

The Town is still searching for someone to run the arena booth for the 2022-23 hockey season.

All regular Council meetings are open to the public.

Fire Insurance vs. Firefighting Coverage Pike Lake Fire Department Safety Tips

Fire Insurance is insuring your property and belongings from fire and getting coverage to replace them. Fire Insurance provides coverage for any damages or losses that occur as a result of a fire. This includes the structure of the home, the property the home sits on, and the contents of the home, so long as the contents within the property are owned by you, the homeowner.

Firefighting Coverage Insurance is having insurance to pay the costs of having fire departments and other necessary equipment and personnel in to put out the fire. This is coverage in a property insurance policy for charges imposed by a fire department for their services in fighting a fire, this is usually a separate limit of insurance, chosen and paid for by the policy owner.

It is the responsibility of the RM to provide Fire Protection Services, however the property owner is responsible for fire-fighting costs. In the event of a fire

the property owner in the RM of Vanscoy (including towns and villages) will be invoiced. Property owners are encouraged to carry adequate Fire Fighting Insurance as expenses can be very costly. Grass and brush fires generate substantial fire fighting costs.

Fire Department call out rates are increasing and there is a possibility that other Departments may be called in for help under Mutual Aid Agreements. If mutual aid is called the costs can add up very quickly.

Short Line Railways Receive a Boost

ore investment is on the way for short line rail through the Government of Saskatchewan's Short Line Railway Improvement Program (SRIP).

The SRIP grants of $530,000 will assist with track upgrades and expansion, improved crossing surfaces and sightlines, bridge maintenance, track rehabilitations and more.

"We recognize the importance of the short line rail industry and the vital role it plays in supporting our provincial supply chain," Highways Minister Jeremy Cockrill said. "Rail provides an important transportation link in moving agricultural goods and other products in and out of the province." Funding will be allocated based on the amount of track each railway owns, with small track networks to receive at least $25,000.

Grants will be provided to all 13 short lines, with the province providing up to 50 per cent of eligible project costs.

There are 13 provincially regulated short line railways in Saskatchewan that operate on 2,122 kilometres of track, primarily transporting grain.

The Rural Municipality of Montrose No. 315 is looking for a:

Foreman Our ideal candidate will have leadership and management responsibility for the Municipalities Public Works. The Foreman plans, organizes, directs and evaluates the activities and R.M. personnel involved in maintenance, and repairing of the municipal road infrastructure and supporting facilities (signs, bridges, culverts, etc.).

Main Duties and Skills Profile: • Blade, maintain and repair all roads in a professional and safe manner.

• Maintain and forward to employees the road maintenance schedule • Service machines, make and assist in repairs as qualified to do so.

• Make sure equipment is in a safe operating condition (walk around check and operational check shall be done).

• Keep track of gravel needs as required.

• Inspect and maintain culverts as required.

• Personnel authority: Placement of employees, complete Job Performances as needed, discipline employees including warnings, suspensions and dismissals, as per R.M. Policy and the Collective Agreement, and for maintaining proper records.

Responsibility for informing Council on all discipline proceedings.

Keep proper written records.

• Management representation on Occupational Health and Safety Committee.

• Will work assist Administrator/CAO in development of the annual maintenance budget • Responsibility for completing all preparatory work regarding acquisition of gravel program • Overall responsibility for constructions and maintenance projects (road repairs, and construction, bridge repairs) completed by R.M. crew, in consultation with Consultant.

• Responsibility for assisting and advising Consultants and engineers regarding large construction projects (i.e. those contracted out).

Education and Experience: • Grade 12 or equivalent • Class 1A • General mechanical ability and experience.

• Supervisory and/or Management Experience (i.e. budgets, personnel, etc.).

• Knowledge and experience in road maintenance with Engineering and surveying knowledge.

OBITUARIES

Barbara Irene Sparrow (nee Wilkie) September 26, 1926 - June 10, 2022

Nancy May Sparrow November 18, 1927 – July 10, 2022

quarter sections and some share and purchased cattle. Together with Merle’s brother Alan, they bought their first Charolais bull in 1963. The farm grew and their Charolais herd became well known and respected. Barbara was a key partner in preparing for and hosting annual breeding stock sales over a period of more than 30 years. Involvement in the cattle industry included active membership in the Saskatchewan and Canadian Charolais Association. Showing cattle at the Royal Winter Fair, the Saskatoon Fall Fair and Agribition were interesting and rewarding experiences.

Barbara’s family are saddened to announce her passing but are comforted to know that she lived a long happy life.

A Funeral Service was held at 2pm on Saturday June 25th, at the Delisle-Vanscoy United Church, 316 1st Street W, Delisle, conducted by Reverend Lindsay Mohn.

Lunch followed at the Delisle Senior Centre.

Barbara is survived by her daughter Connie Sparrow (Brian Brannagan), and grandchildren Cassandra Brannagan (Nathan Carswell) and Jacob Brannagan; son Craig Sparrow (Yvonne Mitchell), and grandchildren Miranda Wood-Sparrow (Catlin Hogan), Chase Wood-Sparrow (Amera Carlson), Carlin Richards (Kevin Richards) and great grandson Dax, and Jaden Wood-Sparrow (Chloe Hoiland); daughter Shelley Sowter (Ken Sowter) and grandson Remington Sowter; sister-in-law Nancy Sparrow; many dear cousins; and numerous well-loved nieces and nephews.Barbara was predeceased by her husband Merle (1999), son Blaine (1972), daughter-in-law Marilyn Wood-Sparrow (2017), parents Roy and Agnes Wilkie, stepfather Herb Lush, brothers Bill and George and their wives Jean and Joan. She was also predeceased by many of Merle’s siblings and their wives, all of whom played important parts in her life.

Barbara was born in Zealandia and grew up on a farm in Wiseton. She travelled by horse and buggy or sleigh to Almonte School and later attended and graduated from Wiseton School. After completing studies at Normal School in Saskatoon she began her teaching career at Minnesota School (Vanscoy District), in 1946. There she met a young farmer, Merle. They were married in 1949.

Barbara planted a huge garden to feed her growing family and share with friends. It was not uncommon for her to deliver a freshly picked bowl of berries or a huge bouquet of flowers to a neighbour - just because…

Barbara was integrally involved in the community. Throughout her lifetime she was an executive member and/or active participant with many organizations, including: Minnesota Merry Makers, UCW, Vanscoy Community Recreation Board, Sunday School, Canadian Charolettes, Vanscoy Senior Citizens Club, Vanscoy United Church Board, and cemetery committees. She valued personal family histories and the history of the Vanscoy area. In this regard she dedicated many hours to research, contributing to the publication of several books: ‘The History of Minnesota School District’; ’They Plowed the Way and We Followed’, Vanscoy & District History; ‘Golden Years of Time’, Vanscoy Seniors Citizens Club; and ‘Reverend Recollections’, a History of the Vanscoy United Church and its Ministers.

Barbara was a superlative hostess - frequently entertaining (and feeding) large groups of friends and relatives - and making it look easy! New friendships were forged as Barbara brought together people from different walks of life.

Her family and friends will especially miss and remember Barbara for the way she observed the hidden beauty of the world around her. …counting the seeds sprouted when grain testing…noticing how many inches a plant grew in a day…watching prairie chickens ‘tobogganing’ down snowbanks.

Donations in Barbara’s memory can be made to Delisle-Vanscoy United Church, Box 98, Delisle, SK S0L 0P0, the Saskatoon Community Clinic, or a charity of choice.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Saskatoon Funeral Home.

Nancy along with Alan were community people. They were active leaders of the Vanscoy Multiple 4-H Club for many years, served on the UCW Board and were instrumental in promoting the Charolais breed across Canada. Many great memories were made square -dancing and socializing within the community. It was during these years that Nancy became known to all she met as the most kind and generous lady we will always remember.

It is with heartfelt sadness that the family of Nancy Sparrow announce her peaceful passing on July 10, 2022, at the Palliative Care Unit, St. Paul’s Hospital in Saskatoon.

A full and long life, well lived and appreciated by all who knew Nancy.

Nancy is survived by her four sons and their families. Norm and Brenda (Jerilyn & Mike Gabruck, Peyton, Beau and Georgia); (Jamie & Rory Statham, Rylan); (Greg & Whitney, Brinkley). Morley and Patti (Brandon & Kristine, Stadler, Vance); (Travis & Jillian, Elle, Maeve); (Kirstin & Rob Voice, Cawley).

Vern and Joan (Siera & Quinn Paterson, Theodore); (Devin & Holly); (Mitchell & Ashton). Cam and Kerrie (Emma & David), Jill and Josie. She was predeceased by her parents James and Ellen Weedon, 4 brothers Jim, Bill, Phillip, Art and sister Amy; husband Alan Sparrow, in 2013.

Nancy was born in 1927 and raised in the Paddockwood, SK District. The youngest of a family of 6, Nancy grew up on a working farm and attended school in Paddockwood and Prince Albert before moving to Saskatoon for an education at Normal School. It was Nancy’s dream to become a teacher and she was the inspiration and guidance to so many young children to have dreams and live their lives as she did. Simply and full. A beautiful young woman inspiring so many with her kind manner.

It was during her time as a young teacher that she met the love of her life, Alan, and they were married in July of 1956. Nancy was blessed with four sons in 7 years and a busy life on the farm in the Vanscoy area is where she was so very proud to call home.

Even at the busiest times, Nancy always welcomed family and friends to her home for a meal or visit.

A loving wife and mother who taught us all the importance of appreciating hard work and following dreams. Nancy was so very proud of her sons and their families, 4 sons, 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, always appreciating visits, a good story and hugs until her passing. A very independent and family-oriented lady, Nancy always was interested to know how things were progressing on the farm or where the next plane trip was. She loved her heritage and cherished the home she made for her family in an agricultural community.

Nancy always took great pride in sharing her fondness for her family and as well as the wonderful years on the farm, with the many friends that she acquired at Oliver Place.

Nancy lived there comfortably until February of this year. A beautiful bond of community and friendship for her senior years.

The family is so grateful for all of Nancy’s many close friends who have recently shown support and love for her as her health deteriorated. She touched many lives in 94 years with her kindness. Always a woman of integrity and grace, a woman we will remember and cherish always. A legacy left for us to cherish and be so very proud of.

Rest in Peace, we will love you always.

Dorene Lenore Thomas June 19, 1927 – July 17, 2022 Jennifer have two boys: Liam and Adam.

Dorene enjoyed her great grand children: Kayden, Gabriel, Lyla, Athena, Lennon, Jasper, Livi, and Lenox.

Dorene loved family and family gatherings.

Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving, New Years Day were always spent with extended family and friends. (Thomas’, Zoerb’s, Grandberg’s, Shillings, Sparrow’s, Shultz’) Dorene was active in the United Church and the UCW. She enjoyed many activities: Old Time Dancing, Square Dancing, Eastern Star and others. Dorene was a lifetime member of Saskatchewan Flying Farmers. With their various planes and their love of travel, Dorene and Howard saw many parts of the world.

Dorene Lenore Thomas, age 95, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2022 with her husband and family by her side. Dorene was raised on the Zoerb family farm near Delisle until the age of 7, when the family moved to White Fox. In 1945, Dorene started teaching in a one room school after 6 weeks at teachers’ college. Dorene married the love of her life, Howard Thomas in 1952. They were married a few days shy of 70 years. In the later years, Dorene would often bring up the handsome man she married in 1952.

Dorene and Howard lived on the family farm from 1952 to 2014. They had six children: David, Belle, Donald, Melvin, Carol Lynn, and Murray. Tragically, Donald and Melvin passed away in 1973 in a hotel fire. Dave and Susan have four children: Courtney, Jefferson (Amanda), Cody, and Kyle. Belle has three children: Richard (Ashleigh), Angie and Rob (Delia). Carol Lynn has two daughters: Allegra (Dalton) and Tammara. Murray and

Dorene is survived by her sister, Inez Shilling, and sister-in-law Bea Thomas and pre-deceased by her siblings, Les (Margaret) Zoerb, Elmer (Pearl) Zoerb, Murial Zoerb, Inez’s husband Tom, brother-in law Norm Thomas and sister-in law Beryl Thomas.

Dorene was loved, respected and touched many people. She had a deep love for family and friends and she always made you feel welcome. Dorene truly was one of the kindest people around.

Please join us celebrating her life Tuesday afternoon on July 26, 2022, at 2:00 pm at Delisle United Church. The family will hold a “come and go tea” after the service at the Delisle Seniors’ Center. The service will be streamed over the internet. In lieu of flowers, we ask that donations may be made to Salvation Army or the Delisle United Church in her memory.

Country Quilters Support Vanscoy and District Agricultural Society

his quilt was donated and presented to the Vanscoy & District Agricultural Society (VDAS) at their annual spring Perennial Exchange.

During the last two years Country Quilters members worked on this charity quilt which was a block of the month pattern called "Summer Moon" designed by Carrie Nelson. Participating members completed at least three blocks each as well as others working on piecing, borders, binding and long arm quilting.

VDAS will be raffling the quilt with the draw being made at their annual Turkey Bingo in November.

Thank-you to VDAS for their continued support of Country Quilters for sponsoring the annual quilt workshop usually held in January.

Other charities Country Quilters has supported are: Ronald McDonald House- 50 pillow cases, 15 cloth story books and a quilt; Quilts of Valour - a quilt for a Canadian Veteran; STARS - 2 quilts for their raffle; "Humboldt Strong"- 1 quilt; NICU Saskatoon - 33 + tiny blankets presented in fall.

Several years ago participating members completed a quilt called "Be Attitudes" which continues to travel to schools in our area, staying at one school for a few months at a time. Many of you may have seen this quilt hanging in the schools.

Country Quilters, which started in the fall of 2008, has a growing membership from all the surrounding communities. We mostly work on our own projects; however may offer an evening demonstration or presentation as well as occasional sew days and/or weekend.

We welcome new and seasoned quilters!! Come and join the fun, friendship and learning. Our first meeting will be Tuesday, September 6, 2022 at 7:00 in the Vanscoy Senior Centre Hall. Regular meetings are the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month.

atherwood 4H Club represented at Summer Synergy which was held in Olds, Alberta on July 12-17.

Dayne Stevens placed 4th in his conformation class for Ewe Lamb and Yearling Lamb, also placed 4th in the Show Team Judging, placed 22 overall in the Multi judging Competition.

Faith Stevens placed 1st in class for both Ewe Lamb and Mature Ewe with lambs at foot, placed top 6 for Multi judging, both members were also part of the record breaking 18 flocks!

This is a record for Summer Synergy, 4H, Olds Regional Exhibition and the largest gathering of flocks in Alberta and possibly Canada!

Faith received a Calgary Stampede Scholarship which was collected on Sunday at the Stampede.

Both members had a fantastic day on the grounds, with the grandstand show, seeing all their 4H friends which included helping fellow 4H members from Alberta with their flocks and steers. They met Ryan Rash which was the highlight.

Catherwood 4H will be having their draw for the Dean Horn Memorial Quilt with funds going to Stars.

Draw will be July 23rd at Perdue Ag Grounds during the Perdue Cattle Show.

Pulse Regional Variety Trial Data Now Available Virtually

July 13, 2022 (Saskatoon, SK) – Saskatchewan Pulse Growers (SPG) is making it easier to learn about pulse variety performance by launching a new tool which provides regional variety trial (RVT) data for pulses, covering up to twelve years of data. Timely and transparent data will enable pulse growers in Saskatchewan to make more informed decisions.

Through the Variety Release Program, SPG has developed over 120 pulse varieties available to growers, royalty-free as part of a 15-year breeding agreement with the Crop Development Centre at the University of Saskatchewan. Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada and other private companies have released additional pulse varieties. As farmers plan for future production years and make seeding decisions, there are some intriguing options to consider moving

away from older, historically grown varieties, into newer and better performing varieties.

In 2021, SPG took over the coordination and execution of the pulse and soybean RVTs for Saskatchewan. RVTs provide an unbiased and transparent testing system of longterm variety performance and have been a reliable resource for growers and agronomists when choosing varieties. This new tool developed by SPG takes the information to a new level and provides data on varieties by location and allows comparative yield analyses between varieties that will help growers make informed choices for their farm.

SPG can show growers, agronomists, and seed growers the benefits and yield advantages of specific varieties in specific growing regions of the province through the pulse regional variety trial portal. Data collected from regional variety trials is uploaded to the virtual portal, and can be compared across locations, years, and varieties to get the best variety recommendations at your fingertips, anytime, anywhere.

The pulse regional variety trial portal is optimized to provide an easy to use and efficient platform to showcase photos and videos from the field: Interactive Map – Find pulse varieties suited for different regions in Saskatchewan and view detailed data for each variety.

Variety Details – In-depth details are available for different crop types and varieties including charts, tables, and coming soon, photos and videos. This portal is a key tool for delivering transparent data to growers.

Compare Varieties – Select a crop type and see comparative historical yield data for selected varieties.

This tool offers a clear look at newer varieties compared to older varieties.
