Editorial

Taking Control of our Communities

A

DELISLE HOTEL

s I write my final editorial for the year, I am being told by the weatherman that we can expect a reasonably white Christmas, maybe a bit below average snowfall, but likely fairly mild temperatures. God I hope so ! I know we can use any moisture we can get around here, so I welcome the snow, but I don’t know if I could take another long cold winter anymore.

The RM Review is definitely a labour of love. It is a small one man operation that provides me with enough to keep me happy. If I was getting rich you would likely not see me around here in January or February. The greatest reward is not financial. Instead it is a sense of purpose that I am doing something to help make my community a better place. Just like the people I listed earlier in this article.

Not that I ever did enjoy to cold, but getting old is sucking. In January we begin our 20th year of publishing the RM Review, so it is obvious just how old I am getting.

Without question this is only made possible by the local advertisers that support my endeavour. And make no mistake... they are not doing it to support me, they are doing it to support you. And I know that not only during this Christmas season, but all year long, you will find a way to support them in return.

We have all seen many changes in the past two decades. Be it happy additions or tearful losses to our families, challenges or successes with our employment, maybe victimized by a seemingly increasing local crime, or maybe stressed out by the way the whole world seems to be heading. It may feel that we have no control of what is happening around us, and for the most part we really don’t, but we are able to at least have some influence on what happens to us close to home.

If you are involved in any of our local groups, committees, clubs or organizations, I encourage you to reach out to the RM Review, so we can help you get your messages out to the community. The amount of hours put into all of these efforts are deserving of getting the best support from the community as they can. We can publish articles about your activities. Promote your events through, not only the newspaper, but also our various digital media offerings. We have options as low as five dollars and often provide in-kind sponsorship. Just contact us to see how we can help.

Through local government councils we have control of who serves on them and the bylaws that get created. School Community Councils give us the power to affect how our children are educated. Local Crime Watch organizations allow us to look after each other. We have the option to support local businesses to keep services in our communities. We can create and support community organizations that provide us with the social and cultural ties that bind us together.

This year my New Years resolution is to increase the amount of community involvement we have with the RM Review. Why not make it yours too.

And that is why I started publishing the RM Review.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

The more we communicate with each other, the better connected we become, and the happier and safer our communities become.

RM of Vanscoy Rural Crime Watch Anniversary Open House

he RM of Vanscoy Rural Crime Watch hosted an Anniversary Event on November 7, 2018 with approximately 40 members in attendance. Sergeant McCracken of the RM of Vanscoy Police Service, Constable Slack of the Warman RCMP Detachment and Dave Aspinall, chair of the RM of Vanscoy Rural Crime Watch program delivered presentations to all in attendance. The Anniversary event would not have been possible without the generosity of the following local businesses and organizations who supported us by donating door prizes, kids’ activities, coffee, snacks, and hall rental: • Mooney Agencies Ltd. • Robin’s Nest Café • RM of Vanscoy 345 • A1 Contracting • Farm One Forty • Town of Asquith • Contech General Contractors • Mayor Erhart of Asquith • Trackline – Deb’s K9 Kenneling Service The Rural Crime Watch currently serves 234 households from the RM of Vanscoy, Asquith, Vanscoy and Pike Lake. We aim to provide tools like our Facebook group and text alert system for neighbours to share observations of

crime or suspicious activity as it is happening so that others can be aware and alert. According to statistics shared at the Delisle RCMP Town Hall on October 22, 2018 the Warman RCMP Detachment saw a reduction from approximately 2400 calls for service in 2017 to roughly 1400 calls in 2018 in the RM of Vanscoy. While it is wonderful to see such a reduction in calls for service, the Rural Crime Watch committee continues to encourage residents to report all criminal and suspicious activity to the police. Membership forms are available by email (rm345crimewatch@gmail.com), at the RM office, Pike Lake drop in center, or by answering the questions prompted when you ask to join the RM Vanscoy 345 Rural Crime Watch Facebook group. The Rural Crime Watch committee works closely with the RM of Vanscoy Police Service, Warman RCMP Detachment and several neighbouring crime watch programs. On October 3, 2018, the RM of Vanscoy Rural Crime Watch committee hosted the second quarterly area crime watch leads meeting to learn about successes and challenges of each group and explore opportunities to share alerts to track activity across several municipalities. The meeting was at-

tended by representatives from West Cory Crime Watch, Moon Lake Crime Watch, Asquith Neighbourhood Watch, Village of Vanscoy, Pike Lake Cottage Owners Association, Warman Neighbourhood Watch, RM of Rosemont Crime Watch, RM of Arelee, Perdue and Kinley Crime Watch, Warman RCMP Detachment and RM of Vanscoy Police Service. By sharing alerts between area crime watch groups there is potential to track activity from Saskatoon to the Alberta border. As we enter the final days of 2018, the RM of Vanscoy Rural Crime Watch would like to wish you Happy Holidays and to leave you with these tips for a safe holiday season: • Leave a timer on your house lights and/or radio/tv if you are away. • Do not announce your winter holiday plans on social media. • Ask a neighbour you trust to keep an eye on your property while you are away. • Use motion detectors on outdoor lights. • Ask a neighbour or house sitter to drive into the yard after a fresh snow to leave tracks. Ask them to brush the snow off of any sitting vehicles if you will be away so it looks like they were used recently.

• Switch to LEDs and run your outdoor or porch lights all night. • Don’t leave your garage door opener in your car as it is an easy way to gain access to the garage. • Move rain barrels, garbage bins, or other large items away from fence lines and entry points of the house as they can be used as a step to hop a fence or access a window. • Trust your dogs. If they bark at night, there is likely a good reason. • Keep everything locked up tight, especially vehicles and instruct any holiday guests to do the same. • Do not leave kids in a running vehicle, whether in town or in your own driveway. • Be unpredictable with your gate. Have it closed whether or not you are at home. • Use warning signage such as “beware of dog”, “This Property is Under Surveillance”, signage provided by your alarm company and of course your RM of Vanscoy Rural Crime Watch Sign. • Check your mailboxes regularly and follow-up on any expected items that do not arrive. Council would like to remind all residents that if you see something that is a crime or looks criminal, to call the RCMP at 306-975-1670. If you see individuals driving dangerously, speeding, or if you see something that just doesn’t look right, please call the RCMP. It does not do any good to come into the Town office the next day to report it to office staff. It is extremely important that the RCMP have a handle of how much crime, no matter how petty, is occurring in town.

All I Want For Christmas Rudolph the Is My Two Front Teeth Red-nosed Reindeer Every body stops and stares at me These two teeth are gone as you can see I don’t know just who to blame for this catastrophe! But my one wish on Christmas Eve is as plain as it can be! All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, my two front teeth, see my two front teeth! Gee, if I could only have my two front teeth, then I could with you “Merry Christmas.” It seems so long since I could say, “Sister Susie sitting on a thistle!” Gosh oh gee, how happy I’d be, if I could only whistle (thhhh) All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth, my two front teeth, see my two front teeth. Gee, if I could only have my two front teeth, then I could wish you “Merry Christmas!”

Angels We Have Heard on High Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o’er the plains: And the mountains in reply echoing their joyous strains. Refrain Glo-ria in excelsis D-eo, Glo-ria, in excelsis D-eo. Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why you joyous songs prolong? What the gladsome tidings be Which inspire your heav’nly song? Refrain Come to Bethlehem, and see Him whose birth the angels sing; Come, adore on bended knee, Christ, the Lord, our new-born King. Refrain

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen Comet and Cupid and Donner and Blitzen But do you recall The most famous reindeer of all? Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Had a very shiny nose And if you ever saw it You would even say it glows All of the other reindeer Used to laugh and call him names They never let poor Rudolph Join in any reindeer games Then one foggy Christmas Eve Santa came to say, “Rudolph with your nose so bright Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?” Then how the reindeer loved him As they shouted out with glee Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer You’ll go down in history!

Frosty the Snowman Frosty the snowman Was a jolly happy soul, With a corn cob pipe and a button nose And two eyes made out of coal; Frosty the snowman, is a fairy tale they say, He was made of snow but the children know How he came to life one day. There must have been some magic In that old silk hat they found ‘Cause when they put it on his head He began to dance around Oh, Frosty the snowman Knew the sun was hot that day, So he said, ‘Let’s run and we’ll have some fun Now before I melt away!’ Down to the village, with a broomstick in his hand, Running here and there all around the square, Saying, ‘Catch me if you can!’ He led them down the streets of town Right to the traffic cop, And he only paused a moment When he heard him holler ‘Stop!’ For Frosty the snowman had to hurry on his way. But he waved goodbye, saying, ‘Don’t you cry I’ll be back again same day!’ Thumpety thump thump, (2) Look at Frosty go, thumpety thump thump, (2) Over the hills of snow

I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus I saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus Underneath the mistletoe last night. She didn’t see me creep down the stairs to have a peep; She thought that I was tucked up in my bedroom fast asleep. Then, I saw Mommy tickle Santa Claus Underneath his beard so snowy white; Oh, what a laugh it would have been If Daddy had only seen Mommy kissing Santa Claus last night.

O Holy Night O holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Saviour’s birth. Long lay the world In sin and error pining ‘Till He appeared and the soul felt its worth A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices, For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn, Fall on your knees! O hear the angels voices! O night, divine! O night, when Christ was born, O night, divine! O night, O night divine!

Santa Claus is Coming To Town You better watch out You better not cry Better not pout I’m telling you why Santa Claus is coming to town He’s making a list, And checking it twice; Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice. Santa Claus is coming to town He sees you when you’re sleeping He knows when you’re awake He knows if you’ve been bad or good So be good for goodness sake! O! You better watch out! You better not cry. Better not pout, I’m telling you why. Santa Claus is coming to town. Santa Claus is coming to town.

Silent Night Silent night, Holy night All is calm, all is bright, ‘Round you virgin mother and child Holy infant so tender and mild. Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, Holy night Shepherds quake, at the sight Glories stream from heaven afar, Heavenly hosts sing,”Alleluia!” Christ the Savior is born Christ the savior is born. Silent night, Holy night Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus Lord at Thy birth Jesus Lord at Thy birth.

306 - 493 - 2408 Thank you to the Grade 7/8 Students of Delisle Composite School for sharing their creativity ! In winter, the snow blows the drifts piled high The snowflakes, they swirl down Falling from the sky. In winter, the wind howls Biting at your face Blowing snow, ice and sleet Whipping across the plains. In winter when the air is silent And the cold winds cease to blow The ice begins its melting And the clouds no longer hold snow. Then winter is almost over And spring is almost here. We'll say goodbye to winter And we'll see it again next year.

When I look out the window And look in the sky I see magical lights slowly shooting by But one little light stood out To my eye, it was red And bright but I only saw it for A little bit and at that moment A clack on the roof And then I knew!

Little gingerbread man sitting beside some golden presents wrapped in red ribbon, holding on to a shiny candy cane. All on frosty snow. Little gingerbread man wearing a red knitted scarf and toque, with white fluffy frosting and gum drop buttons. All on chilly snow. Little gingerbread man happily waiting for Santa to bring gifts and joy, excited for Christmas and all the fun. All on sparkly, sparkly snow.

Blankets of snow cover frosty solid ground. Pine trees wisped with white tips. Wind blows and snow slowly falls to the ground silent as a mouse. Cozy cabins filled with heat and blankets. Children drink cocoa out of their favorite Christmas mugs. Mom and dad cuddle by the fire watching their children have fun. When they look out the window, they see a pretty blue sky full of amazing stars.

I looked out my window and watched the soft white snow settle on the ground. I banged on my window and an icicle fell from the rain gutter. I looked at the ground and there was a large white blanket of snow. “Jerald!” my mother called me. I walked down the stairs and took a deep breath and smelled the nice creamy milky smell of warm Christmas eggnog. This is the life, I told myself. This…is…the…life.

Christmas is more than a day in December. It’s all of those things we love to remember. It’s the music and the family’s getting together. It’s the sleigh rides and the hot coco. It’s the Children’s faces on Christmas morning. It’s the frost bite on your nose from playing in the snow. Christmas is more than a day in December, it’s the magic and love that we will remember.

ust like that, another month has flown by! November was filled with the 4-year olds learning about how to keep their bodies healthy. They discovered that germs fly out of their mouths if they don't cover them when coughing and sneezing, they learned the 4 food groups, made a giant toothbrush and learned how to keep their teeth clean, and they'll finish off the month exercising and learning different emotions and what they mean. We also had brown day where the 3-year olds made porcupines and the 4-year olds made owls. The 4s also enjoyed many brown (mostly unhealthy but yummy) snacks! We've started practicing Christmas songs and each day the kids sound better and better! Their concert will be Friday, December 21st at 10am downstairs in the hall. I can't wait! The 3-year olds will finish off the month with everyone's favourite day - pajama day! Most of our days in December will be centered around Christmas. To celebrate the number 4 and the colour red, we'll be making Christmas decorations to decorate our classroom, then move them downstairs to decorate for our concert. Other days will be for discussing Christmas trees, traditions, and making Christmas rice krispie treats. I hope you have a safe and happy Christmas! Catherwood 4-H Report

O

n October 14th at the Magnus’s house, the Catherwood Beef and Sheep club had our first general meeting. The general leader is Brandy Magnus. The beef leader is Tiffany Peters and the junior beef leader is Stephanie Huber. The sheep leader is Louise Grinde. Our President is Brynn Whelan. The Vice President is Alex Johnson. The club’s treasurer is Shyanne Magnus. The secretary is Danielle Matonovich, and the club reporter is I, Claire Huber. We have two new members and their names are Dayne and Faith Stevens. Our club is very happy to have two new members! We played the Ice breaker game so we could get to know each other better. The Ice breaker game is where you have a sheet of paper with a bunch of questions on it like does anyone your Club have green eyes? Then you would find someone with green eyes. Then they would sign the paper. It was a lot of FUN!!! Our first beef project meeting was on Sunday, November 4, at the Peacock’s farm. The beef leaders taught us how to read a pedigree. A pedigree is a written history of yourself or your calf. It can take shape as a family tree. We also learned the dad of a calf is called the sire and is the paternal side of the calf. The mom of a calf is called a dam and is the calf’s maternal side. We also learned how to understand and use EPDs or Expected Progeny Differences as a tool to select breeding stock. The Sheep members also had a sheep project meeting on November 4th at the Grinde’s farm. The sheep member’s started to work on their record books. They also played the sheep game. The sheep game helped them learn about different sheep breed characteristics. We are going to be having a Christmas party at Clip and Climb in Saskatoon. It is going to be on December 15. I think we will have lots of fun!

SASK. ANTIqUE VEHICLES NOW FROzEN AT MODEL YEARS 1987 AND OLDER

S

GI changed the definition of an antique vehicle on November 15, 2017. The current definition allowed vehicles 30 years and older to be eligible for registration based on Antique Use. The new definition allows only vehicles that have a model year of 1987 and older to be eligible for Antique rating. This change applies going forward and does not impact any existing vehicles registered as Antique. In summary, vehicles with a model year 1988 and newer will no longer be eligible for Antique Use (even after they reach 30 years of age). Saskatchewan established the antique vehicle class for low-use vintage vehicles (such as the Sunday parades or car shows!) but many antique vehicles are being used far more often than originally intended for this registration class. While physical damage coverage for antique vehicles is limited to only

$800 (most know you require an appraisal to properly insure your valuable classic vehicle!), your antique plate still provides the same liability $200,000 limit and injury benefits as a normal vehicle. All antique vehicles pay the exact same insurance premium regardless of make or body style. SGI observed a trend in the past 5 years with over 55% increase in antique vehicle registrations however these antique vehicles being used on a regular basis may not be paying their fair share in premiums. The following requirements must be met for a vehicle to qualify for registration as an antique: The vehicle must be model year 1987 or older, applicant must have or operate a primary-use vehicle and the vehicle must be for private use only and not for commercial or farm use. An antique vehicle is not subject to an inspection if it is a light vehicle

(Class LV) registered for personal use and has a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 4,500 kg. MP REPORTS T

Liberal Deficit Keeps Growing

he Liberal government has just released their Fall Economic Statement, and it is deeply concerning: they plan on running a deficit of $18 billion this year and $20 billion next year.

In the last election, Trudeau promised to balance the budget in 2019. We now know that this won’t happen. Instead, he will continue to run deficits for the foreseeable future, leaving even more debt for our children to pay off. We don’t need an economist to tell us that more debt today means higher taxes tomorrow. It has to. By 2023, paying the interest on the debt alone will cost $37 billion a year. The average Canadian family is paying $840 more in taxes now than under the previous government, before accounting for the carbon tax. How much higher will that number go? And while Trudeau claims that his deficits are building the economy, the truth is your hard-earned tax dollars are going to giant corpora-

tions while small businesses and families trying to make ends meet get nothing.

The Liberals have also announced a bailout for “approved” media, totalling over half a billion dollars. The bailout, which comes in the form of tax credits, will be given to a list of news outlets only if they are approved by a panel of government-appointed journalists? Through this election-year bailout, Trudeau is compromising both the independence of the media and the integrity of our electoral process. It should never be up to any government to determine which media outlets receive government support and which media outlets do not. My colleague Pierre Poilievre, Shadow Minister for Finance, had this to say on the update: “Justin Trudeau said the budget would balance itself. Now he admits that under his plan it won’t balance at all. “Instead this year’s deficit is more than three times what he

Call Bar ney at 306 - 270 - 4353

Kelly Block, MP November 23, 2018 said it would be and he has added $60 billion to the national debt. “The reality is Justin Trudeau has squandered the good fortune he inherited in 2015 and has failed to prepare for inevitable future economic downturns. “His unrestrained spending and resulting deficits have forced interest rates and inflation up, putting even more pressure on already overtaxed and indebted Canadian families. “The cost of government is driving up the cost of living. This cannot continue. “Every year that Justin Trudeau runs deficits, he is borrowing money from future generations. Today’s deficits are tomorrow’s taxes. Canadians know that it’s wrong to leave their children with unpaid bills, but that is exactly what the Prime Minister is doing. “A Conservative government will stand up for the common sense of the common people who understand that budgets don’t balance themselves and who know you can’t get out of debt by borrowing more money.”

COMMUNITY REPORTS

Asquith’s ‘Operation Santa’ is Running for 19th Year

A

squith’s Operation Santa is a Christmas Hamper program that was formed by a group of concerned citizens in Asquith who wanted to help needy people. The program is starting its nineteenth year. Every year the community of Asquith and area is generous in their support, both monetary and in donated grocery items. Gifts for the children of the needy families have been donated in past years, as well as lovely hand-knitted toques and mittens for the children. Last year the program provided hampers and groceries to sixteen family units in which there were twenty six children. Thanks to the generosity of the community a small gift for each child was also provided with the hamper. The program is being run again this year with a goal to provide grocery and Christmas Meal hampers, as well as small gifts for the children, to the families that are needy. Request forms are available at the Asquith Co-op, Post Office and

Town office. All recipients’ names are very confidential; we protect each person’s dignity. Applicants are screened to ensure that help is directed where most needed. All requests for hampers MUST be turned in to the Asquith Town Office by December 7th, 2018. We do not give cash out to families or individuals, rather all cash donations are used to purchase appropriate hamper items locally. We are appealing to our entire community to be a part of this. We would like to thank you for any help you might be able to give, be it in the form of a food drive for donated grocery items or a cash donation. If you are wanting to donate a small gift for a child, this must be turned in to the Town office prior to the December 7, 2018 deadline.

The area we cover is a 15 mile diameter circle so we break up into 7 groups and disperse for the morning, coming together for lunch at the St. Martins Church basement to swap stories of the morning, before covering the remainder of the area in the afternoon. We have volunteers joining us for the morning, or the afternoon, but most make it a days outing. We usually spend only a few minutes at each site. This provides a snapshot of bird trends and numbers. Data are submitted to Bird Studies Canada (BSC), which is affiliated with the Audubon Society and Cornell University. Our results are published in Nature Saskatchewan’s ‘Blue Jay’ magazine.

rganized by the Saskatoon Nature Society and the last of the Christmas counts, volunteers will again visit acreages in the Pike Lake area to conduct the annual Christmas Bird Count between the hours of 9am and 5pm. I would like to thank landowners who have welcomed us on previous counts and we look forward to our brief visit on Saturday, January 5, 2019.

stablished in 1929, the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation has spent the past 88 years focused on one important mission — “To ensure the wildlife legacy we leave to our children surpasses that which we have inherited”. A non-profit, non-government registered charity with over 33,000 members and 122 branches across Saskatchewan, the SWF has become the largest wildlife conservation organization of its kind in the world per capita. Every dollar raised through donations stays in the province, going directly toward the federation’s cause and leveraged for maximum impact. Not only remarkable in size, the SWF has also earned recognition as a leader in fisheries and wildlife conservation and education in Saskatchewan and across Canada. “We have three pillars that we focus on, which is wildlife habitat protection, enhancement and securement, fisheries enhancement and outdoor education,” said Darrell Crabbe, executive director of the SWF. The SWF does this through a diverse series of projects and programming including the Habitat

Trust, Wildlife Tomorrow, Conservation Easements, Fisheries Enhancement Program, Youth Conservation Camps, Women’s Outdoor Weekends and more. Since the Habitat Trust Fund was established in 1978, the SWF has acquired and protected over 67,000 acres of land by purchasing parcels from landowners, or by obtaining the land through generous donations. Fifteen hundred of those acres were acquired in the last year alone. The land is managed to provide optimum conditions for wildlife to thrive on the properties. “Probably the most impacted — and now it's being recognized as the most at risk native habitats in North America, if not the world — is short grass prairie habitats in Saskatchewan and Alberta so definitely, it's a problem,” said Crabbe. By protecting those areas, at-risk species like the greater sage grouse and the black-footed ferret, have a better chance of recovering and making their way off the endangered species list. The Fisheries Enhancement Program aims to improve fish habitats, which are impacted by a variety of things including residential development and the presence of invasive species like zebra mussels, which can disrupt ecosystems. When it comes to ecosystems, balance is key. “We’re always striving to have a healthy population of any species. We don’t want an overpopulation or an under population,” said Crabbe. The promotion of responsible hunting, trapping and fishing, are just some of the ways the SWF works to maintain that balance and ensure wildlife remains equally accessible to all Saskatchewan residents. The SWF also manages 166,000 acres of land through a funding agreement with the provincial government’s Fish & Wildlife Development Fund (FWDF). This fund receives 30 per cent of the revenue from all fur, angling and hunting licenses in the province and is used to manage and enhance fish and wildlife habitats. The FWDF is also the sole funder of the Fort Qu’Appelle Fish Culture station, the only fish hatchery in Saskatchewan that stocks fish in order to enhance angling opportunities for the public. Every year, the station stocks approximately 125 lakes and rivers with trout and 75 with walleye. The FWDF also funds research and outdoor education projects within the province.

regular outings organized and lead by a club member to areas generally within 1 to 2 hours drive of Saskatoon. The only cost is sharing of the gas. If this interests you please see our monthly newsletter posted online at www.saskatoonnaturesociety.sk.ca for up and coming meetings and outings. So, fill your feeders for those hungry little birds and enjoy watching them from the warmth of your window. (Small black oil sunflower seeds, with or without shells, work well.) If you would like to volunteer on Jan 5, please contact me. (see below). The Newsletter which will be posted before the end of December will have the dates and places of other local Christmas Bird Counts which you might be interested in volunteering with. But none of this is possible without public engagement and awareness of the conservation issues of our time. The SWF takes great pride in being leaders in outdoor education in Saskatchewan with a focus on youth — the leaders of tomorrow. “We have to instill a fundamental appreciation of our unsurpassed resources to make sure they protect and conserve wildlife and their habitats into the future. And the only way we can do that is by educating them at a young age,” said Crabbe. The federation has run youth conservation camps for over 30 years as well as a variety of other educational programs like Classrooms on Ice, Classrooms on the Marsh and the Bigfoot Snowshoe Loan. The programs focus on youth from Grade’s 4-9 — formative years in a person’s life and the perfect opportunity to teach them in ways that will have a lasting impact. Additionally, the SWF co-owns an education facility in Hannin Creek. With 64 beds, the facility operates year-round for everything from youth conservation camps to university research. A wet and dry lab is currently being built as an addition to the facility. “If we don't take measures to ensure that our youth are taught a direct connection back nature and to conservation then it gets lost very quickly,” said Crabbe. The whooping crane was adopted as SWF’s symbol in 1982 — as the species was on the brink of extinction — which the federation held as a reminder of what can happen when we are not proactive about conserving wildlife, and what can be restored with determination and dedication.” Between the SWF’s proactive approach to conservation through education and their efforts to protect and enhance fisheries and wildlife habitats over the past 88 years, their determination and dedication speaks for itself and Saskatchewan’s connection to nature grows stronger and stronger every day.
