T

he Saskatoon Farm Toy and Collectable Show is an annual event that has been running for the past 30 years. It features new and used toys for display and sales. Neil Isley, from Delisle, has been going to the show to view since the early 90's and has been an exhibitor for the past 15 years, displaying his collection of vintage pressed steel toys that he has restored or polished to a showable condition. Four years ago Wayne and Sherry Gamble of Perdue (Show creators and promoters) asked Neil and his wife Allison to help with the advertising and promotions of the show and next year they will be taking on all of the show responsibilities. ...Continued on Page 3

Food for Thought

For many years Red Williams has been a regular contributor to the RM Review, and other publications, with his Food for Thought column. His commentary on current events has always caused me to think, at least for a moment, about what is happening in the world around us. Sometimes his thoughts have sparked controversy, and we have received as much feedback in disagreement as we have in support of his views.

I was saddened to recently learn that Red is now in long term care and will no longer provide a column. I will miss that. If I have learnt anything from this man, so willing to voice his opinion, it is that we can, and should, voice our opinions. We all live in the same community, province, country and indeed on the same planet. What happens matters to each of us, and what will happen in the future will,

in some way, be determined by each of us. I encourage you to follow Red’s lead and make your opinion heard too, be it at a local council meeting or in a community organization, or by writing a letter to the editor, which we will be pleased to publish. Say what you think... or be told what to think. It’s up to you. Ken Sowter Editor

Laura Multiple 4-H Receives Best Display Award at Toy Show ...Continued from Front Cover Neil Isley has been involved as a leader in the Laura Multiple 4-H club in various ways since 1991, and being a multiple club, it allows for non-traditional projects such as Archery, Bird Watching, Cooking, Mechanics, etc. Remington Sowter from Vanscoy had been going to the toy show for the last few years where he met fellow collector Neil Isley and one day he asked Neil if he would help him with the restorations of a few toys. Neil realized that a Toy Restoration project for the Laura Multiple 4-H Club would be a perfect solution. As a 4-H leader, plus being part of the Saskatoon Farm Toy and Collectable Show, it was very much a natural assumption for Neil that Remington display at the show. Remington's display was like an achievement day display, including the Laura Multiple 4-H banner, Saskatchewan 4-H information brochures and of course a display of restored and showable toys.

Remington Sowter Awarded Best Display for New Exhibitor Each year the show gives "exhibitor's choice" and a "new exhibitor" awards in appreciation of the hard work the exhibitors put into their displays. This year Remington Sowter received the "new exhibitor" award for outstanding display of a new exhibitor to the show. Remington will also have the Laura Multiple 4-H Toy Restoration project on display February 10-11, 2018 at the Yorkton Farm Toy Show.

MOONEY AGENCIES LTD. PURCHASES WRIGHT INSURANCE SERVICES LOCATED IN COLONSAY & YOUNG

W

e continue to see consolidation in many industries and businesses including insurance. While this is happening globally, we have several examples locally as evidenced by the recent merger of Agrium and PotashCorp to form Nutrien. Agriculture has experienced much consolidation already whether family farms or huge agri-business. Larger farms and businesses are better-positioned to remain profitable through economies of scale, as they have the resources to invest in technology, to drive innovation and to become more efficient as profit margins narrow. Consolidation is often the result of succession with aging demographics forcing more retirements at many farms and businesses. With regards to the insurance industry specifically, we have also experienced increased consolidation in recent years as many businesses (both insurance companies and brokerages) are reaching for a larger share of the marketplace. In particular, long established locally owned insurance brokerages including Angus Insurance from Harris (now PCCU Insurance Ltd. with locations in Elbow and Eston) and

Delisle Agencies (now HUB International based in Chicago with over 10,000 employees) have changed ownership in the past year or so. Given that the insurance brokerage is a cornerstone business in many small communities, this trend away from local ownership is concerning to some but will likely continue. In an effort to remain competitive and sustainable in this environment, Mooney Agencies decided to expand our footprint with the purchase of Wright Insurance Services located in Colonsay and Young. We remain entirely locally owned and family operated with the same commitment to support the communities that we serve! Wright Insurance Services was first established in Colonsay by George and Cindy Wright in 1993 and then expanded into Young in 2006. George and Cindy practiced general insurance for 25 years in these communities before reaching the point of retirement. They were thrilled to find a succession opportunity with Mooney Agencies as it was important for them to transition the business they loved to local ownership rather than a multinational. Mooney Agencies felt this expansion was an excellent fit for our business as the communities of

Colonsay and Young are similar to the existing trading area surrounding Vanscoy, both are potash and agriculture based economies with a strong sense of community pride. With these business changes effective January 1, 2018, Courtney Klapwijk and his wife Catherine have relocated from Delisle to Colonsay to better serve the new communities. Mooney Agencies is an independent insurance broker, working for you rather than an insurance company or financial institution. We will properly assess your general insurance needs, shop for the best value in coverage and help you in the event of a claim. Mooney Agencies provides specialized advice for your farm or acreage, along with providing home, auto and commercial insurance solutions anywhere in Saskatchewan from our 3 locations in Vanscoy, Colonsay and Young. We are available to meet at your home, acreage, farm or business by appointment. Please introduce yourself to your Mooney Agencies insurance team – Stephanie & Landry Klapwijk, Della O’Hara, Danielle Thiessen and Courtney Klapwijk.

Delisle Citizens on Patrol (COPP) and Nieghbourhood Watch Programs

T

he Delisle COPP’s held an organizational meeting on Jan 25th. They now have 20 people signed up, with criminal background checks completed. Their vests and signage are now in and Citizens on Patrol/Neighbourhood Watch signs have been put up around town. Their first official group meeting is on Feb 8 at 7pm in the Town Hall where they will hand out vests and discuss moving forward. If you are interested in joining the COPP group you will require a criminal record check which can be completed at the Delisle, Warman or Martinsville RCMP

detachments. If you want to be part of the Neighbourhood watch group (no patrolling involved) you do not need the record check. You will be given a neighbourhood watch sign for your window and a check sheet. Join them on Feb 8th to get involved. The Village of Vanscoy is also forming a Citizens on Patrol Program and will be hosting their first organizational meeting on February 28 in the Vanscoy Circle Hall. Keeping small communities safe requires everyones help. Please get involved today.

MP REPORT

A

s of today, there is just over a week left before the Canada Summer Jobs Program closes. I’ve written to you before about this Program, and the Liberal’s unacceptable attestation demanding applicants agree with the government’s point of view in order to be funded.

The Conservative Caucus has been vocal in our opposition to the Liberals imposing their beliefs on Canadians. It violates the core principles of the freedoms of religion and belief on which Canada was built. However, we are not alone. Newfoundland and Labrador MP Scott Simms, a member of the Liberal Caucus, announced that he would be petitioning his own Party to remove the attestation. In his words: “Just last week, I spoke with one of the churches about housing, affordable housing. The Salvation Army is constantly doing things for anti-poverty. So I have a close connection with these groups, and I represent them, even if we have a difference in belief… "All I can do is I can look to the minister, I can look to the leadership and say, this application, as it stands right now, is not right." On Thursday, representatives of nearly 90 religious groups, including Christian, Islamic, and Jewish groups, released a statement demanding a rewrite of the attestation. Thomas Cardinal Collins, Archbishop of Toronto, spoke in a press conference about the requirement: “It is deeply troubling to me that all who are involved are being forced to endorse a particular set of values

prescribed by the government,” said Collins. “The government should respect and accommodate the diversity of values and beliefs in Canadian society. It must itself abide by the Charter in its treatment of individuals and groups.” Even the federal NDP briefly raised concerns with the attestation, before backing down under pressure. Nathan Cullen, NDP Ethics Critic, had this to say: "There are many community groups who are faithbased who apply and receive summer grants who do amazing work, that don't proselytize or promote any issues that would be hard for Canadians to hear," he told reporters.

Looking L ook king for for an a innovative innovative solution solution ffor or y your our bathtub? batht h ub?

"If there are Charter questions, that's a totally separate conversation. We have a Charter; it's enforced by the courts and the police. Let it do its job. Otherwise, it seems like meddling." With so many voices raised in opposition, what can be done about this abuse of power? As I mentioned last week, I am sponsoring a petition calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to remove the attestation. The petition can be found on my website kellyblockmp.ca, and can be printed off, signed, and mailed back to my Ottawa office free of charge.

SCHOOL REPORTS

PIKE LAKE SCHOOL

PIKE LAKE PRESCHOOL

It was a cold January for Saskatchewan and one that prompted at least one “no school” day because of the frigid temperatures. Nevertheless, as the winter begins to wind down, our school begins to wind up with some great fun and activities for learning. Our annual Scholastic Book Fair is fast approaching with this year’s theme being “Saddle Up and Read!” We invite all families and community members to come on down to peruse the fair to lasso some special books for your little cowpokes. The fair will begin Monday, January 29, 2018 and run until Friday, February 9, 2018. Our school will host two evening open houses: Thursday, February 1st and Wednesday February 7th beginning at 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. both evenings. All proceeds from the sales of books will be used for purchasing library and educational resources for the students. We hope you can come and rope in some wonderful options for Saddling Up to Read! Each year we compile information about the school enrollment over the next five years. This information is very vital to our future planning and funding. If there are any families in our community and area that have young children who will attend Pike Lake School within the next five years it is imperative that you contact Pike Lake School @ 306-668-4808 This would include youngsters 0-5 years! We look forward to hearing from you so that our preliminary future enrollments can be firmed up. We will be learning and actively demonstrating many of the wonderful traits of what it means to be a friend when we celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14th. We can dress up in red, pink and/or white as we spend the afternoon in fun learning activities with our friends. In keeping with tradition, the SCC will once again be supporting the annual lunch for our community and school families. The students are always eager to prepare a meal to share with the community and demonstrate the skills they have learned in the school’s daily nutrition program. Please save Friday, March 16, 2018 as the date for sharing a meal with a neighbour, the school students and staff. Watch for more details in the upcoming days.

December was a busy month, getting ready for Santa with songs and crafts. The students sang really well and Santa and his helper were impressed!

Dates to Remember: Jan. 29 to Feb. 9 – “Saddle Up and Read” Book Fair Begins Jan. 30 – Snowshoeing p.m. Jan. 31 – NO SCHOOL Semester Turn Around Prep Day Feb. 8 – Skating p.m. Feb. 9 – Book Fair Ends Feb. 14 – Valentine’s Day Activities Feb. 16 – Winter Olympics p.m. Feb. 19 – Family Day Holiday Feb. 19 to Feb. 25 – NO SCHOOL Winter Break Feb. 26 – Classes Resume March 16 – Community Luncheon

January started off chilly so the 3-year olds didn't have their first day back until January 19th! But they settled in nicely, as did the 4-year olds. We have 2 new 4-year old students bringing our numbers to six 3-year olds and ten 4-year olds! The 4-year olds have just finished a unit on transportation, making hot air balloons and boats. They were great boat builders because all of their boats floated! We'll finish the month with White Day. Both classes will make snowmen, the 3s gluing on parts of the snowman and the 4s turning their names into snowmen. We will hang these on the walls so our classroom can look like a winter wonderland! February is a shorter month with a week off for winter break. We'll celebrate Groundhog Day and Valentine's Day, as well as the number 6 and the colour pink. The 4-year olds will also experience a Preschool Olympics since the Winter Olympics occurs this year in February. 3-year old days: February 2, 9, 16 4-year old days: February 2, 6, 9, 13, 16, 27 Colour: pink Number: 6
