Delisle & District First Responders are Hosting Training Course

T

he Delisle & District First Responders are recruiting local residents to serve as first responders. They will be hosting a Medical First Responders course in March.

You need to have current CPR-C/AED Prior to attending. We have a CPR/AED Instructor that will be setting up courses so let us know if you need it.

Maximum 10 participants, First Come Basis.

Our Communities need First Responders that are in the Communities we serve during the day. Most current First responders work in the city or are not available during the nights.

If you are committing to becoming a First Responder in our communities there will be no cost to you for the First Responder Course., but you are responsible for your initial CPR C AED Training.

There is a down deposit required for registration to show your commitment and reserve your spot. This is refunded to you upon completion of the course.

There will be other documents required such as First Responder Application form, Position description, Confidentiality agreements and the Vulnerable Sector Criminal record check that are also needed.

Time to Come Home

he recent insurrection in the U.S. highlighted many issues that every democracy has to deal with to survive. The biggest of which today is truth... or the lack of.

To most of us it is easy to see these un-truths... the Biden election was stolen, Democrats eat babies, the Holocaust never happened, 9-11 was an inside job, COVID-19 isn’t real, Sandyhook and Parkland school shootings were fake, etc.

Conspiracy theories provide some people a reason for what is wrong in their lives. By blaming something or someone they do not have to accept the reality of their situation and, unfortunately, are then unable to change that reality.

We’ve always know such folks as the crazy neighbour, or the racist uncle, that was “out there” on their own, but two things have changed...

SOCIAL MEDIA & TRUMP Unregulated access to “Research” has created a bottomless rabbit hole of “Facts” that not only confirm these conspiracies, but even more dangerously, clicking and tapping drags them into more conspiracies, taking them further down the path.

Enter QAnon...

Simply a plethora of insane theories that no one person could possibly believe all of, but it eventually grew into a global cult movement due to one big coalescing factor.

Enter Trump...

This feckless demagogue shirked his obligation as a leader to denounce this movement when it chose him as its messiah and, quite predictably, embraced it for political gain.

Conspiracies then began to replace today’s politics, as radical groups of racists, homophobes, fascists, white supremacists, anti-semitics, etc. felt Trump’s inaction was the call to rise up... and rise up they have done.

But the delusional QAnon followers were dealt a devastating blow with Biden’s inauguration, as they were convinced Trump would overturn the stolen election and seize power.

Some snapped out of it at that point but many are still searching for an explanation, and radical groups are now working hard to recruit them.

Enter You...

Now is the time for us to reach out to these disenfranchised folks and bring them back home again while we still have the chance. Pull them from the rabbit hole, show them the world isn’t ending, involve them in our lives and communities again.

Maybe we can use Valentine’s Day to let them know that we love them, regardless of cultural and political differences, and that we can, and must use the peaceful channels that our democracy affords us to pursue the continuous changes required to improve our society. It is a slow process, and no one will ever get everything they want, but instead, everyone can, and will, eventually get something they want.

This mutual hope will keep us all moving forward together. To lose that hope... is to lose our futures.

The following story is an excerpt from the book “Anecdotal Evidence” by author Harvey Domoslai It was around midnight and I was asleep when the phone rang. It was Debbie. I could hear loud hip-hop music and partying going on in the background. “It’s Sugar, she’s having her babies and we are right in the middle of our kid’s sixteenth birthday party and I don’t know what to do,” she sobbed into the phone. Debbie was the mother of three teenagers. She also had three dogs – two small and one large. Sugar was a tiny Maltese who was accidentally bred as a teenager to a much larger yorkie male. Sugar’s belly had been expanding exponentially for the last three weeks and now it looked like things were ready to pop. I told Debbie I would be over and quickly drove to her house.

When I arrived, the house looked like anything but a maternity ward. Loud music thumped through the house and kids joked and danced around in the dim shadows. Debbie thanked me for coming, and then took me to a back bedroom where Sugar lay on her little bed straining and looking for help. A group of teenagers huddled wet-eyed and mascara streaked around the little dog. It was a stark contrast to the oblivious, joyful teens in the adjacent rooms as they looked pleadingly to me for help. A quick digital exam revealed a large, likely dead pup at the pelvic inlet with a Riders chance in BC of getting out naturally. I told Debbie the unfortunate news that Sugar would need a c-section.

I grabbed Sugar and left a much subdued group with a promise to call as soon as I was finished. I would be flying solo for this surgery as Sugar was very manageable and I didn’t think I needed to call in anyone else for help at this late hour. Things went well and I quickly had Sugar anesthetized and on the surgery table with her swollen abdomen waiting my scalpels touch to release its burden of pups. The expected pups turned out to be two massive ones, one in each horn.

Their removal from the stretched uterus was difficult and as each pup came forth, their lifeless body was laid on a towel, where I attempted to resuscitate it. I worked for a few minutes on each pup, injecting them

stress of whelping, coupled with the anesthetics used to sedate Sugar had killed the pups in the uterus. I lay the pups in a box with the other surgical garbage and returned to sew up Sugar.

Ten minutes later I was just starting to close the abdomen when I glanced over to the garbage box. I thought I saw the blood soaked gauze move. It was now close to 2am and the clinic was dark and spookily quiet. I thought that my tired mind was seeing things.

But there it was again, the same movement! I quickly shed my surgical gloves and dug into the refuse box. I searched for what was alive in there. I came to the dead pups and as I touched the still bodies their open mouths gasped. They were alive! I grasped each pup in turn and gently CPR’ed them until they miraculously started breathing regularly and had regained a steady heart rate. I was overjoyed at this turn of good fortune and happily returned to Sugar and finished suturing her up.

Sugar woke up soon after I completed the surgery and she immediately, albeit groggily, started licking her pups. The pups were becoming more and more animated by the minute and you soon couldn’t tell that’ I’d declared them clinically dead and thrown them in the garbage a scant hour ago. I phoned Debbie expecting to wake her up but instead was greeted by the same music and party noise I had heard earlier. I told her to good news and she was ecstatic and eager to get Sugar and the pups back – tonight if at all possible. I thought to my self that if I had just been given a C-section, the last place I’d want to be would be in a house full of teenagers and pounding music. I told Debbie I’d drop her off as soon as I could in the morning.

I waited until around ten the next morning before I called. This time I got Debbie out of bed. She answered gravelly and told me that I could bring Sugar and the pups over right away. I drove over to Debbie’s and she let me into her house, blaming the kid’s party for the mess. Kids were sprawled and sleeping wherever they fell amongst the discarded garbage and bottles of last night’s party and as I surveyed the scene I told her not to worry, the pups would feel right at home.

edical First Responders are locally trained volunteers located within their home communities who are dispatched to 911 calls. The Medical First Responders are dedicated, reliable and who have accepted the responsibility of caring for neighbours and community members while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. Being a Medical First Responder is a rewarding, exciting and dynamic volunteer position.

This volunteer position involves partnerships between individuals, communities, Saskatchewan health authority and our local ambulance services.

Medical First Responders are licensed by the Ministry of Health as an emergency medical services provider. Registration lasts for a two-year period, and requires an educational update every two years in order to maintain licensure. Training is provided by the SHA twice a year on the core competencies of the Medical First Responder scope of practice - spinal immobilization, airway management, patient assessment and CPR.

COUNCIL REPORTS TOWN OF ASQUITH

(Next Meeting February 10, 7:00pm) Asquith Town Council did not hold its regular council meeting on January 13, 2021 due to inclement weather and there was no quorum.

Asquith Town Council held a special meeting on January 20, 2020. Attending were Mayor Gail Erhart, Councillors, Jackie Stobbe, Cecilia Mryglod, Jeff Eide, Wade Monks-Janzen, and Darcy Stack. Also attending was CAO Kathy Picketts and Foreman Darren Kraft. The meeting was called to order at 6:52 p.m.

A resolution was made to accept the council minutes from the December 9, 2020 regular council meeting and the council minutes from January 13, 2021 regular meeting.

Council made a motion to accept the December 2020 financials and December 2020 bank reconciliations as presented to them at the meeting.

Accounts Paid in the amount of $69,725.55 and Accounts Payable of $98,935.56 were accepted as presented.

Operation Santa would like to thank Lord Asquith School for their collection of items that were donated in the month of December 2020!

The Town was successful with the following grants – Community Rink Affordability Grant for $2500.00, Nutrien Grant for 2020 for the Fire Department in the amount of $11,850.00.

The following appointments were made by Council for 2021: Wheatland Regional Library – Jackie Stobbe; Legal- MacDermid Lamarsh; Auditor – Jensen Stromberg; Fire Chief- Colin Graham; EMO Co-ordinators – Patty Kraft and Lois Walker; Building Inspector – BuildTECH; Board of Revision – Krismer and Associates.

Did you know …..The Town of Asquith pays a library levy of over $5,000 a year. Anyone living in Asquith can go to Saskatoon to the Wheatland Regional Library and get a library card that will let them access the Wheatland Library and any of its satellite libraries (i.e.in Perdue or Delisle). One can also use their Wheatland Regional Library card to go to the Saskatoon Public Library – one must show their current Wheatland card in order to receive a Saskatoon Public Library card. There are also many online applications that one can access through the Wheatland Regional Library.

2021 brings a new year, and of course with a new year comes the necessity to renew licenses. Pet licenses are now due. All individuals who own a cat or dog in Asquith are required to have a license for their pet.

Cost of licenses is $10 for a spayed or neutered cat or dog or $20 for a non-spayed/non-neutered cat or dog.

Did you know……that if you take out a building permit, the onus is on the property owner to contact the building inspector to make a final inspection and to close the permit. Failure to do so results in your permit being left open and as such could pose a real problem for you should you decide to sell your property. If you are not sure whether or not your permit was finalized or closed, please feel free to contact the Asquith Town Office.

TOWN OF DELISLE

ouncil held a regular meeting January 12th.

Saskatchewan Assessment Management Agency made a presentation on the general property reassessment for 2021 and how it will affect property assessments in the Town of Delisle. No individual property information is available yet but should be arriving by the middle to the end of February. New assessment notices will be mailed to all property owners at that time. These assessments are used in the calculation of property taxes. A province wide general reassessment occurs every 4 years.

The 2021 insurance policy was presented to council and approved.

No one from the public wished to address Bylaw No. 62020. As a result, Council passed the bylaw. This bylaw dealt with rezoning the new property east of town along Railway Avenue as Highway Commercial.

he Town of Asquith held a by-election for councillor on January 6, 2021. Cecilia Mryglod won the election by defeating Dylan Claypool.

he next Canadian census will take place in May 2021. Hiring is underway for enumerators in all communities. Contact your local Council if you are interested in assisting with the census and making a few extra dollars this spring.

Catherwood 4-H Beef & Sheep Club

C

atherwood 4H Beef and Sheep Club held the first general meeting of the 2020-2021 4H year on Sunday October 4th, 2020 in Asquith.

Elections took place and our General Leader is Brandy Magnus. Our Beef Leader is Dean Horn and our Sheep Leaders are Mel Stevens and Louise Grinde.

Catherwood added Sewing as a project this year. Our Sewing Leader is Audrey Magnus.

Our Club Executive is President Faith Stevens, Vice President Shelby Peacock, Treasurer Shyanne Magnus, Secretary Danielle Matonovich and Club Report Jeynessa Magnus.

We discussed fundraising ideas for the club.

Fundraising includes making wreaths at Christmas, selling raffle tickets, bbq, bottle drive and old battery collection.

The Club is fundraising to build picnic tables for the Perdue Fair Ground where our Club Achievement Day will take place if Government Regulations will allow in June 2021.

December 6th, 2020 club members completed the wreath fundraiser. Member sold a total of 70 wreaths for the fundraiser. Each wreath was hand crafted by each member and delivered to those who purchased.

Catherwood 4H Beef and Sheep Club members would like to extend a thank you to everyone who purchased wreaths from our club members. Club members are thankful for your support to keep our club going and helping reach our fundraising goals to give back to the community.

Delisle Vet Clinic purchased one of the wreaths, put it together with gift certificates from some local Delisle businesses and held a draw for the Delisle Community Basket. Kathy Beuker was the lucky winner.

Our next general meeting will be zia Zoom on January 24th, 2021. At the meeting members will report on how their project are doing.

November 22nd, 2020 the Beef club members took their beef project animals to Saskatoon Livestock Sales. Members were able to weight their projects to obtain a starting weight for their record books. Beef members took the opportunity to work with their projects via halter breaking, leading and grooming.

November was 4H Saskatchewan Club Week and Sustainability Initiative. Club week is the first week in November (Monday to Sunday). Throughout the week the 4H office encourages members to show their 4H colors and 4H pride while giving back to the community. 2020 theme is technology and science. Catherwood 4H Beef and Sheep Club participated in the 4H Saskatchewan Electronics Recycling Drive. Catherwood 4H Beef and Sheep Club members collected a total of 407 kilograms of material. This consisted of 102 kilos of computers, 41 kilos of screens, 61 kilos of printers, 102 kilos of audio/visual devices, and 102 kilos of electronic accessories.

• Every year have your heating system, vents, chimney and flue inspected by a qualified technician.

• Install and operate appliances according to manufacturer’s instructions.

• Never use a gas range/stove to heat your home.

• Never leave your car idling in a closed garage.

Installing CO Alarms • Ideally one alarm should be placed outside of each bedroom and have one on each level of home. Follow installation instructions.

ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge

he ParticipACTION Community Better Challenge is an annual event that gets Canadians across the country moving together. From June 1st to June 30th, 2021, we are calling on ALL Canadians to get active and incorporate physical activity where they live, learn, work and play As individuals or as part of an organization, we are asking Canadians to get active and track their physical activity minutes in an effort for their community to be recognized as one that champions active living. At the conclusion of the challenge, we’ll recognize and celebrate community achievements, crowning provincial / territorial winners and ultimately appointing one community with the designation of Canada’s Most Active Community!

ParticipACTION has developed a micro-granting program that will support community organizations who are planning to host participatory in person or virtual activities or leverage physical activity-related programming during the challenge period. Microgrants range from $250 to $1,000 and can support qualified instructors, equipment, rental cost, market-

ing and promotion and other costs that will make the activity even more impactful. Sample activities include try-it sessions, multi-sport or multi-activity programs, open-houses, school events, mayor’s challenges, neighborhood fun runs as well as virtual events such as virtual runs or zoom classes (note: as safety is very important to us, all local public health protocols and recommendations must be followed).

AgRICULTURE REPORTS Classrooms Invited to "Adopt" a Calf Students across the country have the opportunity to learn firsthand about beef cattle production from a young rancher dedicated to enhancing agricultural knowledge.

SASKATOON, JANUARY 11, 2021 - Classroom Cattle, a new Canadian Ag Education program, allows the virtual adoption of a calf from Mortenson Farms Ltd. for the school year. Half of the classrooms get to virtually adopt and follow the development of a heifer calf and half virtually adopt a bull calf.

Founded in the fall of 2020 by Julie Mortenson, the first year of Classroom Cattle involves roughly 1280 students from 61 classes – 53 from Saskatchewan, four from Alberta and four from Ontario. Plans are now underway for year two.

Mortenson Farms Ltd. is a grain and beef cattle operation located near Nokomis, Saskatchewan where Julie farms with her husband and his family.

“Participating classes receive physical learning materials such as ear tags and feed samples, as well as monthly updates on the life of their calf,” explains Mortenson. “One fieldtrip per class per school year to the farm is also included: although, due to current pandemic restrictions, this year’s field trips are all being conducted virtually through Zoom which still allows the ability to interact in real time and answer questions from the students.”

Virtual farm tours will remain an option for any class unable to make the journey to the farm in person.

Sign-up for Classroom Cattle opens to Canadian teachers in September each year and the program runs from October to May. Mortenson intends to have the program remain free to classrooms through industry sponsorship and fundraising. Currently, funding support is coming from the Saskatchewan Cattlemen’s Association and the Canadian Agricultural Partnership Awareness Initiative along with some resource partnering with 4H Saskatchewan.

“The goal of the program is to connect children from across Canada with a Verified Beef Production Plus ranch in order to inspire curiosity and trust in agriculture and food production,” says Mortenson.

WgRF Approves Funding to Expand Capacity at Parkland College

A

s part of its $32 million Capacity Initiative, WGRF is pleased to announce a $60,440 infrastructure investment to the Yorkton research farm, managed by Parkland College and the East Central Research Foundation (ECRF).

“WGRF is pleased to provide funding to expand the capacity at the Yorkton research farm,” says, Dr. Keith Degenhardt, WGRF Board Chair. “This investment by WGRF will help to expand their capacity to conduct on-farm field scale work,” says Degenhardt.

The Yorkton Research Farm at Parkland College fills an important role in the agricultural research ecosystem of Saskatchewan. The Yorkton research farm will be using this funding to purchase a truck, weigh wagon, dump trailer, office size clipper seed/grain cleaner plus various screens, a custom-built sample dryer as well as equipment to improve extension of research results.

“The majority of the work conducted by the farm currently involves small plot grain crop production, says Michael Hall, Research Coordinator, Parkland College. “This funding from WGRF will help to increase our capacity to do forage work and on-farm field scale work to address issues not found on the experimental farm. Every asset purchased will support the entire research program,” says Hall.

In total, twenty-four Phase 2 Capacity Initiative applications were approved by WGRF. Additional capacity funding announcements will be made in the coming months.
