Nancy Durham Retires from Fashion Retailing
ancy Durham began in the fashion world by hand painting silk scarves in the 1980’s and sold them to boutiques, art galleries and at craft & trade shows across Canada. Her success includes being commissioned by: the Federated Co-op for a scarf in the co-op colours of the rainbow, politician Bill McKnight for hand painted silk scarves given to visiting dignitaries and the Brier committee when it was hosted in Saskatoon. In 1986 Nancy realized that jewellery to match could be an added sale to the scarves, so in 1986 she took a silversmith course with her husband Jack, who she convinced that they could possibly work at it together. Jack made one piece of jewellery and never tried it again! Nancy carried on creating many unique designs with leather, crystal, semiprecious stones, pewter, antique brass and copper, hiring family members to keep up to demand. She was even commissioned to do a special pin for the Childfind organization in Saskatoon that was sold through their organization and was presented to Mother Teresa and Prime Minister Jean Chretian.
very rewarding”, says Nancy, “ you get to meet so many people that become your friends. I have always been interested in who my customers are where they are from. It has been a pleasure to work with every one of them over the years”. Success in retail has given Nancy opportunities
Nancy has decided it is finally time to retire from retailing and in February, Joan Sellers will be taking over as the new owner in Delisle, working along side her daughters Lisa and Robin. “Owning a fashion boutique gets in your blood and it is hard to give up after doing it for so many years”, admits Nancy, “but the time spent running a store means long hours, not only when the store is open but after hours too”. Nancy encourages her customers to support the new owner and says she will be helping Joan as a buyer for the store for seasons to come. She will still designing jewellery and selling it to Joan as well as boutiques in Saskatchewan and Alberta.
She soon decided to open a store inside Prairie Pottery on 2nd Avenue in Saskatoon and add clothing to her offerings. Quickly word spread about the unique jewellery and clothing she carried and it became evident that a bigger location was be needed. The business quickly grew, requiring long hours and after 8 years she sold the store to spend time with her grandbabies.

INDEX
After seven years of previous customers urging her to get back in business she finally opened up in Delisle. It didn’t take long to outgrow the small boutique and in 2016 Nancy expanded to the Schneiders building, kitty corner from the hotel. Customers from local communities, across Canada and even the USA continued to support her retail store again. “Working in retail is
retail stores and make jewellery too”, explains Durham, “When you work in a small business the people are a big part of your life. Customers appreciate sales staff that take pride in customer service. That is lacking in the retail world today, with online shopping and big box stores. Giving customers the opportunity to touch and try on the clothing and jewellery and working closely with them to find the right fit and style is what keeps them coming back”.
“I wish to send a big thank you to all the ladies who have worked for me over the years”, says Nancy, “ and to the amazing customers who have supported my business for years, I would never have been able to do this without you all. Thank you all so much !”
Nancy Durham is retiring to give back to her community through fashion shows in Saskatoon that raised money for Ronald MacDonald House and the Catholic School board plus donating items to Delisle and Vanscoy organizations. Nancy also believes it is important to support Canadian fashion designers and attended buying shows in Saskatoon, Edmonton, Vancouver and Toronto over the years. “My daughter Jaclyn has been with me as a buyer on many trips”, explains Nancy, “she has a great eye for what we should bring in for her age group. I always tell her we are not buying for ourselves we are buying for our customers”. Since she was a teenager, Jaclyn has worked with Nancy through all her ventures and behind the scenes to. “ I’ve been lucky to have great people work in my

Shrinkage... hey it’s been cold out you know !
Y
es, yes, there is that shrinkage, but I’m also thinking of another even worse one.... Community Shrinkage. For those of you that live around the Asquith area you will have noticed that over the past few months the Town of Asquith has lost not
one, not two, but THREE restaurants, which once provided meals to the community and it’s visitors. The Poplar Spot Cafe on the highway, the long standing Vault Restaurant on Main Street and the famous Britannia Restaurant across the road are now all gone.

Fortunately the Asquith Hotel has opened a new kitchen to take up the slack. If you enjoy the services in your community, support them or they will disappear too. Happy New Year !

Troubles
t seems there is no end to the climate troubles in the US. The flooding was the worst in recent history, to be followed by the worst fires in history. One can only imagine having 200,000 people displaced. That there was only one casualty is amazing, even though there was unbelievable destruction of structures. It will be a sad Christmas for those uprooted people with no home to go to.
The public outcry is as if the trip was a failure.
The tragedy was underlined by President Trump’s maudlin speeches, on one hand extolling the long history of American blacks, and on the other supporting, the gun lobby in a speech supporting the election of disgraced Senator Moore. Impeachment will come none too soon.
All the while we in Canada are preparing for a visit from the Jolly old man, Merry Christmas everyone.
Trudeau has his troubles because he didn’t get agreement of free trade in his trip to China, even though the negotiations continue.
To top off the situation, Trump announced that he was moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem and in so doing moves the capital from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. This flies in the face of Palestine and virtually the whole Western World is objecting, along with the Arab countries. This is the root of more uprising in the Middle East.

Saskatoon Farm Toy and Collectible Show is being held from January 12 - 14
he Saskatoon Farm Toy & Collectible Show will be celebrating its 30th year on January 12-14th, 2018. It’s first year was in the Saskatoon Travelodge banquet hall where the show organizers, Wayne and Sherry Gamble of Perdue, realized they needed a larger venue. The Western Development Museum became the home for the show for the next 23 years. In 2014, a new venue was needed and the move to the German Cultural Center was made. In 2015, Neil and Allison Isley of Delisle joined forces with Wayne and Sherry to promote the show. The show has had many different exhibitors over the years, both for displays and sales. From
homemade creations like a gravel/ rock crusher and many custom farm toys, to brand new toys in boxes. It has been a source for parts for restorations and customizations on many pieces of equipment. Although the main features are the farm toys themselves, there are many
other things that will help draw a crowd. There are vintage toys and collectibles, Hot Wheels, diecast models of different sizes and construction

equipment. There have even been some dolls, china, and handmade wooden toys available over the years. The most popular displays at the show are the farm yard creations that have been built from scratch. These feature scale sized buildings, equipment, people, animals, and even fields.
The amount of hours and work that go into the displays are tremendous. Show exhibitors have a couple opportunities to show their creations in the Scratch Built and Custom Built competitions. The winners of the categories win a plaque and bragging rights for
their hard work. For many years, there has been a pedal tractor donated by local farm dealerships to be raffled off. The proceeds of the raffle have gone to many great charities. This year, the tractor has been graciously donated by Moody’s in Perdue with proceeds going to the new Perdue arena. The Saskatoon Farm Toy and Collectible Show will be held at the German Cultural Center, 160 Cartwright Street E., in Saskatoon on January 12-14 The hours are Friday 5pm-9pm, Saturday 10am-5pm, and Sunday 10am-4pm. CREDIT SCORING AND INSURANCE
majority of insurance companies including SGI CANADA and Wawanesa Mutual now utilize your personal credit score as one of the factors to calculate insurance rates. This means in order to obtain the most competitive rates you need to authorize or provide consent to insurance scoring by your provider. In particular, you may need to confirm your full legal name (remember your insurance policy is a legal contract and therefore must indicate your full legal name including middle initials as necessary!), your date of birth and a Canada Post approved mailing address. It is ultimately your choice to provide access to your credit based insurance score. Credit scores are only used to offer a discount on your policy. The discount could be substantial so it is important that you make a decision in order to obtain the best possible rate. Note your rates will never increase due to an unfavourable credit score or refusal to provide access to your credit
score. A person’s credit score has proven to be a strong indicator of the risk that a claim will be filed against that policy. Credit-based insurance scoring is now a common underwriting tool used throughout the industry. Credit-based insurance scores are not used in the same way as traditional credit scores. While traditional credit scores are used to predict the likelihood that a consumer will default on a loan, credit-based insurance scores are used specifically for insurance purposes to predict the likelihood that an individual will file an insurance claim. Insurance scoring is just one of several factors that are used to calculate home insurance premiums. Other rating factors include the age and size of your home, materials used to build your home such as wood frame, estimated cost of reconstruction, location of your home, your individual claims history, the crime rate in your neighbourhood, value of your personal belongings,
MP REPORT
The Liberal Government appears to be trying to exclude certain organizations who disagree with them from receiving funding through the non-political Canada Summer Jobs Program, by making it a requirement for applicants to support certain beliefs that may go against their convictions. This directly undermines the fundamental principle of Freedom of Religion or Belief by imposing a particular ideology on the applicants. The actions of the Government directly contradict the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Section 2.
One of the key marks of a free society is the ability of its members to hold and express opinions with which the Government disagrees. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms was drafted and adopted with this in mind. When writing the Charter, Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau made a point of highlighting the importance of freedom of conscious, belief and religion, opinion, and expression by listing them at the very beginning of the document under the heading “Fundamental Free-

Regardless of personal stance on this particular issue, Canadians should be very concerned that the Government of Canada is basing funding decisions on whether or not you hold certain beliefs.
The Summer Jobs Program is a nonpartisan national program that helps students gain invaluable work and life experiences that they would otherwise never receive. The Program funds mainly not-for-profit organizations. Many of the organizations are faith based with the intent of helping those in need.
Less than a month ago, the Government was forced to settle a lawsuit with three pro-life groups for actively discriminating against them in last year’s Summer Jobs Program. Rather than learn the lesson that they should not be interfering with the personal beliefs of Canadians, the Government doubled down and are now trying to remove funding for all organizations and individuals who disagree with them.
This Trudeau Government altered the Program rules so that organizations applying for funding now have to sign what is essentially an ideological pledge of support for the Government’s views on abortion and gender identity theory. This amounts to Trudeau imposing his opinions on Canadians while shutting down those who disagree with him.

proximity to a fire station and fire hydrant, whether your home is in a neighbourhood prone to sewer back up or water damage, the coverage and deductible that you choose and any applicable discounts such as monitored security systems.
Millions of Canadians hold beliefs that are vastly different from this Government’s. Their private
convictions should not prevent them from helping to care for the disabled, refugees, or providing day camps for children in need. Prime Minister Trudeau should take notes from the last Trudeau who occupied the office of Prime Minister. Freedom of belief and expression is unequivocally fundamental to Canadian democracy.

I had 2 provincial final runner-ups. One in fastball and one in hockey. They were both against Shellbrook. And I have had two great hockey teams. This year we are undefeated and I got some of the best teammates ever, I like every single one. In westerns, it wasn’t the most pleasant. We went 0 and 5 but with 2 underagers and all first years, that’s pretty good especially that we had 11 players playing their second year of ball. I got to go to Arizona to play ball with some friends and made a lot more friends. My goal in 2018 is to redeem our team to the provincial final and hopefully a rematch of last year. And get to play for our emblem on the front of our jersey, play our hearts out and hopefully win the provincial final. If we can't, I am glad I can play for my hometown and the team I play for. That’s the best part, besides playing with my friends, having fun in the sport, improving in our weakness and having desire to get back up and out there, to try twice as hard. And know that winners never quit, winners win. Try your hardest, you can be the best you can. Sincerely Jordan
Dear 2017, First of all, you were pretty good. Ok, so you were full of terrible memes, horrible trends, (bottle flipping, dabbing, etc.) and there were some pretty terrible shootings and hurricanes, but let's stay positive! There was a lunar eclipse in August and the royal engagement of Prince Harry and Megan Markle. See good things are happening! The Olympics are also coming up and I bet they will be great! Some good movies are out, like the last Jedi, Wonder Women, Logan and lots more. Of course, I would run out of space if I were to write all of them, but I think you get what I mean. Anyway, 2017 has had its falls but it's also not been the worst year in the world. By Ashlyn Dear 2018 I am quite excited but I am struggling with ideas or just a summary for resolutions of the world. I already know mine but everything happening in the world, which are the most important. Well other than that people know what they do, wouldn’t it be easier if everybody acknowledges their mistakes? Like my resolution is to not make paper airplanes so I don’t get detention, in other words to avoid conflict. if everyone commits to one, the world would be way better in the little important details. Well I hope world leaders-war leaders all decide to commit and have a new year's resolution (IF ONLY THE WORLD COMMITS TO peace). SINCERELY Emilio

n December our club bought gifts for people for the Angel Tree in Delisle. It is nice to be able to help people out at Christmas. We will be having our silent auction at the Delisle Playschool's Valentine's pancake breakfast. This will be on February 11, 2018 at
the Delisle Senior Centre. Bidding will start at 10:00am and will close at 12:30pm. There should be lots of great things to bid on to help support our club and to also help support the playschool by buying breakfast! Submitted by Colby Isley
