ongratulations to the three winners of our Summer STAY-Cation contest. Brian Shukin won the Grand Prize and the Bonus Draws were won by Sandi Brule and Lorie Kuntsmann. Over $1,000 in prizes were provided by local sponsors, all of whom are well deserving of your support this summer. Without them, we would have no communities at all.

Actually we should all feel like winners with the recent rainfalls. We have been saved by the tears of angels once again. Rain is expected till the end of June, which should get most things back on track. Hopefully future rains come during the late evening hours, Monday to Thursday, leaving all weekends sunny and warm for an enjoyable summer of events and activities.

Our ‘Summer Destinations and Activities Guide’ found on page 6 will show you all these upcoming opportunities for your Summer STAY-Cation this year. Support the events, support your local businesses, and make us all winners here at home. Enjoy the summer ! Ken Sowter - Editor

Vanscoy School takes Bike Trip to One Forty Farms

O

July 2019

www.rmreview.net

n Tuesday, June 18th twenty one Vanscoy school grade 4 students headed out on a bike trip to Farm One Forty south of Vanscoy. It was a windy, but clear sunny day and the Delisle Fire Department volunteers made sure the group of riders crossed Highway 7 safely. The gravel road leading out of Vanscoy had been freshly graded but the headwind made for some tough pedalling for

those young legs and the six parents that chaperoned. The students enjoyed seeing all of the various animals during their tour of Farm One Forty, about a mile down the road. With the wind at their back, the return trip was less challenging. The students were pleased with their biking accomplishment, and thanks to many volunteers, the trip was a success.

Thank You from Vanscoy School We would like to say a giant THANK YOU to all of the volunteers that made our bike trip out to Farm One Forty a success. Thank you to the Delisle Volunteer Fire Department for your help to safely cross the highway. Your knowledge, abilities, and friendliness made our trip safe and enjoyable. Thank you to Arlie from Farm One Forty for the fantastic visit. We appreciated your tours, games, and spaces to eat and have fun. As always, thank you to our parent volunteers. We couldn’t have done it without all of you. Thank you! Mrs. Spence and the Grade 4 Class from Vanscoy School

ur annual March awards banquet and fundraiser was held in the Perdue Complex. It was well attended with great food catered by Perdue Arena Rebuild. There were lots of raffle prizes as well as awards for fish, mule deer, elk, antelope and geese. Many thanks to those who donated to our fundraiser and bought tickets for our auction and gun raffle. Our 25th Annual Fish Fry was held in April at Asquith and was also well attended, as there was no snow this year ! Another event was our Annual Kids Fishing Derby, that was held at the Eagle Creek Regional

Park on June 2nd. Many people attended at the trout pond on that very hot day. Prizes were awarded for trout catches to Kash Fischer - 2lb 5oz Lenny Rogan - 2lb Billy Rogan - 8oz. All three winners were from Kinley. Thank you to all the entrants (ages ranging from 2 - 15 years old). They enjoyed free hotdogs, drinks and sweets at noon. Our Wildlife branch introduced 100 fingerlings this spring, along with 1,000 fingerlings provided by the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation. Many larger trout had survived the winter thanks to the aer-

ation system running in the pond. Fishing at the pond is open to the public all summer. Everyone is invited to attend our functions, which are advertised in the RM Review and promoted on our website and Facebook page. This year our branch has earmarked $20,000 for Habitat Land purchases and we have also sponsored a young girl to attend Hannin Creek Youth Camp for one week this year. Have a great summer fishing in Saskatchewan !

“Treat Vaping like Smoking”

T

NDP proposes measures to curb rising cigarette and vaping usage by Saskatchewan youth

he NDP and advocates are raising concern over a massive hike in youth vaping in Canada, according to a study released today. NDP Leader Ryan Meili is proposing several measures to address the rising crisis.

e-cigarettes are regulated responsibly and consistently alongside traditional cigarettes,” said Dr. Karen Leis, general pediatrician in Saskatoon and Saskatchewan representative on the board of the Canadian Pediatric Society.

“The British Medical Journal’s study shows that there has been a 74 per cent increase in youth vaping in Canada – that’s extremely concerning considering the dangerously high rates of youth smoking we have in the province,” Meili said. “We’re going in the wrong direction on creating a healthy path forward for the youth of Saskatchewan. By failing to take any meaningful action, we are failing the kids of this province.”

The Saskatchewan Coalition for Tobacco Reduction, Heart & Stroke Association of Canada and most recently Canada’s Chief Medical Health Officers have all called for action to be taken by provincial governments to curb youth tobacco usage.

“It’s time to treat vaping like smoking.” From 2013 to 2017, the number of Saskatchewan youth aged 15 and over who have used e-cigarettes jumped from 8.2 per cent to 15.7 per cent – a 91 per cent increase. Other studies have shown that Saskatchewan has the highest rate in Canada of youth aged 15-19 who are smokers. “With the clear health risks associated with the rise in acceptability and access to vaping devices, it is essential that government regulation prioritizes the health and well-being of children and youth by ensuring that

NDP Health Critic Vicki Mowat has sent a letter to the Health Minister outlining how the government can take immediate action, including treating e-cigarettes and vaping like smoking, including when it comes to advertising restrictions; bringing the legislation that’s already on the books around flavoured tobacco into force; making playgrounds and sports fields tobacco-free; restricting the sale of tobacco at recreational and sports facilities; and requiring a license to sell tobacco. “A clear and frightening picture is emerging: vaping is driving youth tobacco addiction in our province, and this government has failed to get ahead of it” Mowat said. “We’re calling on the Minister to put Saskatchewan youth first by implementing our recommendations on treating vaping like smoking.”

SSGA Hosting Benefit Concert for Biggar Area Ranchers

T

he Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) is coordinating the Argo Wildfire Benefit Concert as part of its Wildfire Relief Fund to help Argo area ranchers affected by the mid-April wildfire. The benefit will take place on Saturday, July 6 at the Jubilee Stadium in Biggar, SK. “By bringing together the community, this benefit is a way to support those cattle producers affected by the wildfire,” stated SSGA President Bill Huber. Shortly after the April fire, SSGA launched a Wildfire Relief Fund to help ranchers in the Argo area affected by the wildfire. Over 22,000 acres of grass pastures were lost and at least 75 miles of fences were destroyed. For cattle producers, the losses are a devastating setback at this time of the year, just when cattle need to be turned out to pasture. There are reports of some producers losing up to 80% of their grazing pasture for the year. This means that, in the short term, cattle producers will have to buy feed and rent summer grazing land to replace lost grass which may need up to two years to recover.

“We are proud to be the presenting sponsor of the Agro Wildfire Benefit Concert,” said Darrell Crabble, SWF Executive Director. “Most ranchers provide access to Saskatchewan’s hunting and angling community, and we felt playing a role in this event provides the SWF an opportunity to return their ongoing support. Ranchers provide crucial wildlife habitat and support healthy wildlife populations through stewardship of the land.” “We’re asking our members, and everyone who can help, to pull together for those in the ranching community who suffered losses due to the wildfire,” Huber said. The benefit event will include a concert, live auction and dance. Tickets are available in advance for $25 or at the door for $30. Doors open at 7:00 p.m. with the concert starting at 8:00 p.m. For tickets, contact the Biggar & District Credit Union or SSGA at (306) 757-8523 or online at skstockgrowers.com For more information on sponsorship opportunities or donating to the fundraising auction, contact the SSGA office at (306) 757-8523.

Conservative Environmental Plan

his week, Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer unveiled the highly-anticipated Conservative environmental plan. The places an emphasis on lowering global emissions and taking practical steps to protect Canada’s environment. Scheer released this statement on our plan: “Conservatives have a proud legacy when it comes to protecting Canada’s natural environment and improving Canada’s environmental performance,” said Mr. Scheer. “Our record of environmental achievement stands in stark contrast to the Liberal record of failure.” Conservatives created and expanded the National Parks system, negotiated the Canada-US acid rain treaty, brought in the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, and much more.

A Real Plan to Protect Our Environment builds on our proud Conservative legacy and is based on three guiding principles: 1. Green technology, not taxes is the best way to lower Canada’s emissions. 2. We will work with farmers, hunters and anglers, Indigenous peoples, provinces, and territories to promote a cleaner and greener natural environment to protect our air, land, water and wildlife. 3. Greenhouse gas emissions do not recognize borders. Canada has a leadership role to play and we must take our fight against climate change global. “A Real Plan to Protect Our Environment is Canada’s best chance to meet the Paris targets, without a carbon tax,” said Mr. Scheer. “We will balance the need to fight climate change by lowering emissions with our core promise of leaving more money in Canadians’ pockets and letting them get ahead.” For full policy details, please visit: ARealPlan.ca

Successful Try-A-Thon at Pike Lake Provincial Park

J

une 7th was a fantastic day at Pike Lake School! Pike Lake hosted its third Try-A-Thon with great success! We were lucky to be joined by the K-4 students from Delisle Elementary School. In all there were 161 triathletes that participated in the event. The day saw students complete a rigorous triathlon course involving swimming, biking and running. The Try-A-Thon was a fully sanctioned Saskatchewan Triathlon Association Corporation (STAC) event. STAC provided support, guidance, medals for participants as well official, Dennis Minielly for the full day. This school based athletic endeavor was about students coming out to have fun, achieve something personal and special, and be cheered and congratulated on their accomplishments! This day would not have been possible if not for the effort from Pike Lake and Delisle Staff, both School Community Councils (SCC), our sponsors, donors and volunteers. The more than 60 volunteers including, parents, grandparents, Pike Lake Cabin owners, friends and community members. who worked tirelessly throughout, to ensure our athletes had a successful and memorable day. A special thank you to the Delisle/Pike Lake Fire Department and First Responders for being on hand to help keep everyone safe. Constable Sean Nave, from the Warman RCMP detachment is quite familiar with triathlon as

a competitor and was present to encourage students as they went through all stages of the Try-A-Thon course. The Grade 11 Outdoor Ed. students from Delisle Composite School made the students from Pike Lake and Delisle smile and feel encouraged. Thanks to Ms. Erin Hill for helping to coordinate the students with us over the last few months! Both schools can celebrate as our goal of participation, with the aim of encouraging a positive, healthy attitude towards physical activity and instilling self confidence was reached. It was wonderful to see the achievement of each student athlete recognized, not just at the finish line but throughout the event. The TryA-Thon experience is to create memorable activities where the athletes are the focus and their participation is celebrated by their schools, family, friends, and volunteers. Mission accomplished! A kid’s triathlon is a huge event that takes a lot of organizing and resources. Hurray to everyone for their contributions which enabled us to host this amazing Try-A-Thon! Sincerest gratitude to all volunteers and participants for enabling our two communities to come together to foster student engagement in activities which are positive, supportive and inclusive in the beautiful environment of Pike Lake Provincial Park.
