We took the ferry, Mrs. B and I, from Victoria on Vancouver Island over to Anacortes, Washington. From there, we were driving down to Seattle where we were going to get on a cruise ship to Alaska.

When the ferry leaves the dock in Victoria it is almost immediately in US waters and wanders in and out through the San Juan Islands to Anacortes. A quick drive from there over the bridge to the mainland and then it's just a short hour and a half drive to the cruise port in Seattle. Easy trip, nice drive.

It was a clear day and I was standing outside on the ferry deck. The wind was being a tad rude (too lazy to go around me, it was just going right through me), but the sun was shining brightly and there was nary a cloud in the sky. It was interesting seeing all the small islands and all the other ferries chugging along between them.

There were motor boats of all sizes, sometimes hurrying, sometimes just sitting, fishing. There were lots of sailboats, too, moving more slowly and tacking back and forth like they had two captains not in agreement on direction.

It was all incredibly picturesque - an idyllic setting for the start of another excellent adventure.

But a lone cloud, grey and lowering, came to harass the sun as we came off the ferry in Anacortes.

We were going through US Customs and being questioned by the Customs Officer.

"Are you bringing anything with you?" the Customs Officer says.

"Well, just our lunch," Mrs. B says, and she reached behind the seat and brought forth a small paper bag. She opened the bag and looked inside and continued, "There's a couple of sandwiches, I think they're cheese, a banana, a couple apples and oranges . . ."

"Go wait over there," he says.

Uh-oh.

"Over there" was a small parking area off to the side of the customs building and up against a chain link fence, you know the kind, 6 feet high and topped with several strands of barbed wire there was nothing scenic about it at all, at all.

While waiting for The Man, I was standing outside of the van having a smoke - going thru Customs is always stressful, you never really know what they're going to do. But it is still a beautiful day, the breeze has died down and the sun is shining warmly,

not bothered at all by the intrusive and obnoxious little customs cloud hanging over my head.

Then this big customs guy comes out of the customs building and swaggers up. He's all decked out in weaponized hip decor and attitude - you could hear him coming, there is lots of brass clanging.

"Get back in the vehicle," he says to me, "No smoking." (He was very manly).

I gulped nervously, quickly extinguished my cigarette, putting it out on the heel of my boot, being careful not to throw the butt on the ground (no littering) and got back in the van.

Put on my seat belt, too, just in case, made sure it was clicked in securely.

Turns out we are in possession of unregistered apples (didn't have that little sticker on them) and illegal alien citrus (that would be the oranges).

"Good thing you told me about 'em," the customs guy says, as he confiscated the illegal, miscreant fruit, "Would have been a $300 USD fine if I'd had to find them myself."

"Whew!" I thought to myself, and "Gosh!".

But fortunately, all was not lost - the banana was legal.

And the Customs Officer sent us on our way. We were relieved of mind to be able to continue our journey happy about that; we were also relieved of most of our lunch, too - not so happy about that.

I didn't ask about the avoided $300 USD fine - whether that was the total fine? or the fine per unit of fruit? and was tax included? - you know, just would have been good information going forward.

Fortunately, I had the presence of mind to realize that such questions might not go well.

(I am at my wittiest when the threat is in the rear view mirror. ) But to be fair, now at least, that US Customs Officer can sleep well at night knowing he has protected his country, the land of the brave and the home of the free, from the double whammy threat of unregistered apples and illegal alien citrus.

Funny, though, how so much time and attention went into inspecting (and confiscating) my lunch, I just sorta somehow forgot to mention the guns and drugs I was bringing in. Ooops.

Oh, well - I'll just mention them next time - probably be OK.

Nutrien Delisle Rodeo is on July 15-16

T

he Delisle Rodeo Committee is excited to finally bring back this spectacular event to our community for the 2022 year. We welcome Nutrien back as returning title sponsor of the 2022 Nutrien Delisle Rodeo. Our rodeo is proud to once again be partnered with the Canadian Cowboy’s Association (CCA). The CCA has been a major stepping stone for the careers of many professional rodeo champions and contestants attending the Canadian Finals Rodeo and National Finals Rodeo. We look forward to welcoming professional caliber rodeo athletes to Delisle!

We look forward to welcoming back record breaking attendance and competitor entries, featuring 10 rodeo events from barrel racing to bronc riding, amazing volunteers, roaring laughter of the wild pony races, and being a family and community focused weekend. The Nutrien Delisle Rodeo become an iconic summer event in Saskatchewan – a symbol of community spirit, volunteerism, and the heart of western values.

This year we feature two evening performances on Friday, July 15 and Saturday,

July 16 starting at 6pm, The beer gardens opens at 4:00pm both days.

Saturday morning at 10am is the slack performance, which is free for spectators. A ball tournament will also be taking place at the old ball diamonds next to the rodeo grounds on Saturday, July 16 at 9am.

Saturday evening we are once again be holding a cabaret at the rodeo grounds at 9pm featuring the Electric Cattle Company and tickets can be purchased the night of, at the gate for $20.

Daily admission for the rodeo is: Adult (18+) - $20, Student (12-18) - $15, Child (6-12) - $10, under 6 free. Weekend pass: Adult - $30, Student - $25, Child - $20.

TOWN OF ASQUITH

own Council held its regular council meeting on June 8, 2022. Attending was Mayor Gail Erhart, and councillors, Cecilia Mryglod, Jacki Stobbe, Darcy Stack, Jodi Nehring, Wade Monks-Janzen, and Jeff Eide. Also attending was C.A.O. Kathy Picketts.

The meeting was called to order by Mayor Erhart at 7:00 p.m.

A resolution was made to accept the council minutes from the May 11, 2022, regular council meeting.

Council made a motion to accept the May 2022 financials and May 2022 bank reconciliations as presented to them at the meeting.

Accounts Paid in the amount of $28,430.82 and Accounts Payable of $26,857.43 was accepted as presented. 2021 Audited Financial Statements were presented to council.

Asquith Town Council accepted tender bid from Michael Steffensen for the air conditioner for $50.00.

Summer brings a joy for everyone to be out and about enjoying the weather. This includes dog owners who are out walking their dogs. The Town of Asquith would like again to remind all dog owners that dog feces MUST be picked up when out walking your dogs. Please be considerate of others when walking your dog and pick up dog feces.

Please try to keep your cats from roaming in town, as they defecate in neighbours backyards, and it has become a real problem.

A reminder goes out to all individuals that the Town of Asquith has A Burning Bylaw which dictates that one can have a fire in town for recreational use only. Only clean wood/firewood can be burned in your fire pits - no painted/treated wood, refuse, leaves, etc. should be burned. Be kind to your neighbor and to the environment and burn only clean wood materials. Also, no bonfires are allowed - please keep the size of your backyard fires moderate. Enjoy your Summer !

TOWN OF DELISLE

ouncil held a regular meeting on June 14, 2022. A water meter will be purchased to record water usage at the splash park.

An amendment to the Traffic Bylaw was passed that will reduce the speed limit by the splash park and the new ball diamond area to 10 km/h.

A $1,000 donation will be made to the Delisle Royal Canadian Legion earmarked for improvements to the cenotaph and surrounding area.

Town Council accepted the quote of $112,675.22, taxes included, submitted by Shercom for the provision of 4' x 4,758' of rubber surfacing for the walking paths in Harold Worth Park. The Town will receive a grant of $85,415 from the Canada Community Revitalization Fund towards this project.

The Town has purchased a new metal stage.

The old wooden stage has been donated to the Delisle Rodeo Committee.

The regular meeting for the month of July, 2022 will be changed to July 5th at the Delisle Town Office commencing at 7:00 p.m.

Vanscoy Celebrates $2 Million Water Project

O

n June 18, 2022 the Village of Vanscoy celebrated the early stages of construction of their more than $2 million water infrastructure project, which will improve the utility for residents and businesses.

Construction on the project began in mid May. Work will include expanding the existing water treatment plant with additional reservoir capacity, along with upgrading pumping equipment, controls, backup power generation, piping network used for distribution and associated works.

Construction is targeted to be complete and the upgrades fully operational by spring of 2023.

Under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, the Government of Canada will be contributing up to $818,000 toward the project and the Government of Saskatchewan will be contributing up

to $681,599. The Village of Vanscoy is responsible for funding the remainder of the project.

“By investing in water infrastructure, we are able to increase system reliability and efficiency. The major upgrades underway at the Village of Vanscoy’s water distribution system are critical to safe community growth and to allow for fire suppression capabilities. Our Government is pleased to be partnering with the Government of Saskatchewan and the Village of Vanscoy to deliver this important project.” said the Honourable Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities.

“Our provincial government is proud to contribute more than $681,000 toward this much-needed Vanscoy Water Project, that will improve service for residents, businesses and

visitors alike,” said the Honourable Jim Reiter, Saskatchewan Minister of Energy and Resources and MLA for Rosetown-Elrose, on behalf of the Honourable Don McMorris, Minister of Government Relations.

“Infrastructure investments like this one, are important to position communities and the province for growth and prosperity for decades to come.”

“Thanks to funding from the Government of Canada and the Government of Saskatchewan, our community was able to move forward with its important water project. Once completed, village residents and local business will benefit from this project because it will provide better water pumping capacity to support firefighting service and position our community for growth,” said Her Worship Robin Odnokon, Mayor of the Village of Vanscoy.

Due to the nature of the position, flexible working times and dates can be arranged. This term has been approved for 8 weeks / 30 hours per week for a total of 240 hours maximum.

Fire Insurance vs. Firefighting Coverage Pike Lake Fire Department Safety Tips

Fire Insurance is insuring your property and belongings from fire and getting coverage to replace them. Fire Insurance provides coverage for any damages or losses that occur as a result of a fire. This includes the structure of the home, the property the home sits on, and the contents of the home, so long as the contents within the property are owned by you, the homeowner.

Firefighting Coverage Insurance is having insurance to pay the costs of having fire departments and other necessary equipment and personnel in to put out the fire. This is coverage in a property insurance policy for charges imposed by a fire department for their services in fighting a fire, this is usually a separate limit of insurance, chosen and paid for by the policy owner.

It is the responsibility of the RM to provide Fire Protection Services, however the property owner is responsible for fire-fighting costs. In the event of a fire

the property owner in the RM of Vanscoy (including towns and villages) will be invoiced. Property owners are encouraged to carry adequate Fire Fighting Insurance as expenses can be very costly. Grass and brush fires generate substantial fire fighting costs.

Fire Department call out rates are increasing and there is a possibility that other Departments may be called in for help under Mutual Aid Agreements. If mutual aid is called the costs can add up very quickly.

‘STAY-cation’ Camping PIKE LAKE PROVINCIAL PARK Pike Lake Provincial Park is 20 minutes from Saskatoon and a million miles from the city.

Pike Lake is a recreation park characterized by aspen, poplar and Manitoba maple groves; manicured lawns with two picnic areas close to the main beach; desertlike sand dunes a short hike away and a popular outdoor pool with a waterslide.

Add to this a diverse array of plants and wildlife owing to its location on a flood plain of the South Saskatchewan River and you can see why Pike Lake Provincial Park offers a delightful change of pace for people wishing to recharge their batteries without having to travel for hours.

Pike Lake is a shallow body of water that's called an "oxbow" - it's a loop of the South Saskatchewan River that became cut off from the main channel.

A barrier-free trail that starts at the main beach and runs southward to the creek that feeds the lake includes observation decks that provide a good view of the aquatic life and waterfowl in the vicinity.

A 1.5-km nature trail that begins at the interpretive centre, meanwhile, provides a fine opportunity to experience the surprisingly diverse ecosystems contained within this small park.

Like many provincial parks, Pike Lake has seen many upgrades over the past few years. If you haven’t been to the park recently it is worth checking out again.

EAGLE CREEK REGIONAL PARK Eagle Creek Regional Park is located on the picturesque Eagle Creek, nestled down in a verdant valley of trees and foliage. The park is a jewel in the crown of the surrounding area, and offers year round fun for the whole family. The park has campsites available and a nine-hole golf course, a water spray park, playground and floating dock.

OUTLOOK & DISTRICT REGIONAL PARK Framed by the picturesque traffic bridge on the south and the historical C.N. Rail Bridge on the north, the panoramic view of the South Saskatchewan River is the setting for the Outlook & District Regional Park.

Located adjacent to the Town of Outlook, this 100 acre park is able to satisfy the recreational needs of the entire family. The natural beauty of the park, the spacious campsites and the mature golf course make this park a popular spot for family reunions, a weekend getaway or an extended stay.

From 2000 through 2017 there have been many upgrades to the campground, including 30 amp power service, group camping sites, and updated washroom and shower house facilities.

The Riverview Golf Course is located within the Outlook & District Regional Park along the bank of the South Saskatchewan River. The course is surrounded by beautiful scenery and offers 3 sets of tee boxes with yardage ranging from 5618-6263, giving you a variety of options. In the clubhouse you will find our retail area with a great selection of apparel, golf accessories and more. We are a fully licensed establishment and provide light meals and snacks to take on the course or enjoy on our covered patio which overlooks the 9th Hole.

The Town of Outlook also has a lot to offer - such as the new Community Swimming Pool ! Waterslides, lane swimming, a wading pool area and swimming lessons are just 2 minute from Park gate.

Track Pinnies

o we have a Delisle Athlete in this race?

Where is the Delisle athlete? Which athlete is from Delisle? Is that athlete from Delisle?

These are the questions that would be asked by fans, students, and teachers all the time when Delisle Composite School competed at Conference and District Track and Cross Country Running because we did not have school pinnies (uniforms) for the athletes to wear to identify them. Well thanks to Dale Kielo, who invested many hours touring from business to business asking for and collecting donations as well as several companies and people that donated, that is no longer the case.

In the spring of 2020, we were able to design and order Delisle Composite track pinnies for our students. Unfortunately, due to COVID, students were not able to wear the pinnies, but they finally made their debut in the 2022 track season! Now our athletes are easy to identify and they look sharp! A huge thank-you to all the companies and individuals that donated to help us purchase these pinnies. Your generosity will always be remembered especially each time they are worn by our athletes.

Delisle Hosts Sask Central Soccer Tournament

O

n June 11th the Delisle Soccer Club (DSC), made up of 83 players and 11 coaches, hosted teams from Pike Lake, Vanscoy, Asquith, Biggar, Loreburn and Outlook at the Harold Worth Park.

They had previously hosted the tournament in 2019. A total of 353 players and over 1,000 spectators enjoyed the soccer as well as the bouncy castle, kids activities and the new Splash Park.

The Delisle Fire Department parked fire trucks on the grounds, provided first aide, gave out free water to the players, kept the tournament running on time by sounding truck horn every 30 minutes.

The tournament was organized by the Delisle Soccer Board Members, parent and community volunteers.

Generous support from various local and Saskatoon businesses, provided sponsorship to help offset the tournament costs. The Delisle Soccer Club wants to thank all the businesses and organizations that helped sponsor our tournament to make it the success it was.

Gold Sponsor, Delisle Coop, donated 353 player’s lunches. Co-op Manager Darin Sekulich says “As a local business, we believe it is important to support local service groups and clubs. It’s our way of giving back to the community so that we can work together to keep our community strong.”

DSC will use proceeds from the tournament to give back to the community – DSC will donate to the Fire Department as well as purchase and donate foldable tables for the concession for use by all services clubs.

Harold Worth Park is currently operating with a concession and 4 ball diamonds that are shared with the soccer club. There is room for expansion.

Town Recreation Liaison Lori Neault says “The Rec Board, under the direction of the town of Delisle, want to continue to add amenities as the town grows and as we obtain funds.”

The Rec Board is currently fundraising with a monthly 50/50 draw. Recently added is an option to purchase a personalized brick that will surround the concession area as well as the option to purchase shrubs as a windbreak or trees for beautification of the park.
