There’s a Hole in my Heart that can only be Filled by You !

I

f you don’t happen to like living in a community where there is singing, dancing, laughing, wit, wisdom and pure enjoyment of life and the people around you... this is your lucky day.

But if you like to surround yourself with those that celebrate life, then this is a sad day indeed because our good friend Phill Sawatzky recently passed on.

Even if you didn’t know him personally you always knew when he was around.

Phill was the kind of guy that arrived in a pub, day or night and within minutes would change the whole environment.

He would order a Phill special and stuff $5 bills into the juke box. He took pride in “reading the crowd” to know what songs to play and often had a young lady up dancing with the first song.

Phill was quite well known in many communities when I met him but for the past few years he also became known as my wing man in our monthly delivery of this very newspaper. Some people even thought he was the one producing it, and I was happy to let them think that.

Phill quickly became the one friend that I spent the most time with for many years. We saw see each other numerous times a week, and we spent many hours listening to music, talking, singing, and laughing. He would have the right music for the kind of day I was having and always knew just what to say to make me feel better about myself.

We would talk about him a lot too.

About his love for parents and his five siblings (of which he was the youngest and likely spoiled rotten), growing up in Alberta and the nature that it offered.

He most often talked about his children, twin daughters and a son, and the many experiences of being their father.

He helped me through lots of the same fatherly experiences I was having.

Like anyone he always wanted to spend more time with his children, but his many stories about them showed just how much time he had spent with them.

Phill had a strong sense of family and quite often a song would come on that would carry him away down that path and, while he danced by himself, bring a tear to his eye. (usually his good eye) He was just like a child himself when you went shopping with him. The main problem was probably that he always forgot to make or bring his grocery list.

He just wandered up and down the aisles, checking out every product, blurt out a “yum, yum”... and into the cart.

As with shopping with children, it took three times longer than I had planned.

He would express shock at his grocery bill, and promptly say “you know what, I don’t care, I like to enjoy myself.”

And that he did.

More times than I can count he has invited me to stop by his place at the end of my day and offered to “set me up” a beer (or a whisky after a hard day). ...Man, I owed him a lot of whiskys.

(I thought a song lyric would be appropriate for this one) Yes, Phill also enjoyed a drink too...

Was it a problem ? Some might say so.

Is it why he died at only 64 years old ?

Probably helped cut his time short... but did it actually shorten his “life” ?

I’m not so sure.

Phill seemed to get 10 days of “life” out of one week and when I was with him...

I did too.

So if I do the math, he actually made it to about 100 (in “you ol’ dog” years).

Until I met him, I didn’t realize how many times one uses the word ‘fill’ in conversation. Fill er ‘up.. had my fill of that... fill in the blank... fill your boots... it’s endless, and Phill enjoyed regularly tormenting me with it. One day we were driving by a construction site that had a very large sign in front of it that read “Clean Fill Wanted”. I glanced over at him and before he got halfway through saying “Well that ain’t me” we were laughing so hard I could barely keep the car on the highway.

In our many hours of conversation we were always challenging each other with our wit and “wordsmithing”.

We even kept score of our supposed “literary talents” on the chalkboard in his kitchen, which was supposed to be for his grocery list, but permanently had only bread, eggs and cheese on the list.

Hundreds of people in the community knew who Phill was, if only through a friendly hello or maybe from a brief conversation in some store that put a smile on your face, or maybe you just recognized his distinctive beard.

I know this because any place that I walked into with him, people would glance right past me and I would hear a hearty “Phill !” come out of their mouth.

It was a consistent reminder that he was loved by everyone that knew him.

And when I went anywhere without him, the first thing I would hear is...

“Where’s Phill ?”

It’s going to be quite difficult to be hearing that question again.

The past week, when offering their condolences on the loss of my friend, some people have commented on the hole I will now have in my life.

In a sense they are right, I have lost my wing man who can never be replaced, but am I left with just a hole ?

If I am, it isn’t an empty hole. It is one that is overflowing with laughs, wisdom, music, knowledge, friendship and love.

Together he and I more than “Philled” that hole in advance. Over-Philled !

I like to think that I was lucky enough to have my fill of Phill, but I do realize there will always be a hole in my heart that can only by filled by Phill.

(He’d likely just give me a weak half point on the board for that one ! ) Phillip Henry Sawatzky strived to be, and was, a good son, brother, father and friend. Yes, Phill wore many hats.

Seriously... he had a lot of hats !

Many people in the community actually knew him as “Fedora Phill”.

I hope that when he is celebrated at upcoming gatherings, you wear a hat.

So... now I think I will go set myself up one last “Phill Special”. “Good Whisky, light on the ginger and water back” then slap on a hat and raise a glass to my very good friend.

“Thank you for making life fun and keeping me young. Cheers buddy....”

Phill loved cheese.... yum, yum Anyway, the chalkboard served it’s greater purpose quite well.

1/2 point for something witty, Full point if it made us laugh for more than a minute.

Point and a half for somehow managing to correctly use a five syllable word in a sentence (that was my strength).

Phill’s strength was his unique ability to accidentally combine two seperate parts of two similar meaning words into a brand new word... and oddly you would still know exactly what he meant.

Point and a half for those ones too.

We were most proud when we came up with a crack that rose to the level of our friend Leo, who was a cunning linguist himself, but sadly also left us too soon.

Phill even started a score column on the board for Leo. When we knew it was a Leo-ism that came out of one of our mouths, Leo got the full point credit.

Sometimes Leo was in first place !

I guess you’re never really gone. pause..............

I’m back ! Sorry, had to have a little cry there.... These never get any easier.

Recently Phill and I began re-writing the 10 Commandments, to flip them from a negative “thou shalt not” to more of a positive “thou shalt” list... “pay for what you take, keep your pants on around your neighbours wives, aim to just wound your victims”... seemed way to funny while laughing on the floor at 3 in the morning... now those tears I like.

squith Town Council held its May regular council meeting on Wednesday, May 13, 2020. Attending were Mayor Gail Erhart, Councillors, Sue Sawicki, Dylan Claypool, Jeff Eide, Harold Edwards, Jordan Claypool, and Ted Goodnough. Also attending was CAO Kathy Picketts and Foreman Darren Kraft. The meeting was called to order at 7:01 p.m.

A motion was made to accept the April 8, 2020 regular council meeting minutes as presented.

Council made a motion to accept the April 2020 financial statements and April 2020 bank reconciliations as presented to them at the meeting.

Accounts Paid in the amount of $20,291.14 and Accounts Payable of $35,214.58 were accepted as presented.

The Asquith Fire Department and First Responders Annual Show n’ Shine and Pig Roast is cancelled for 2020. Please contact the Asquith Town Office if you would like to donate in support of the Asquith Fire Department and First Responders.

The fence at the Asquith Dog Park has recently been painted, so be sure to check it out!

The 2020 Canada Day Celebration has been cancelled due to COVID-19.

Graham Contracting will be doing street sweeping within the Town of Asquith very soon, so please watch for posters and signs for the dates that street sweeping will start. Please remember to refrain from parking on the street on these days to facilitate sweeping.

The Town of Asquith will be extending the municipal tax discount of 4% from August 31, 2020 to September 30, 2020, in response to the unforeseen conditions resulting from COVID-19.

The Asquith Town Office is now open to the public.

Please remember that there are some fire bans in some surrounding areas around the Town of Asquith.

Also, if you intend to have a backyard fire within the Town, please ensure that you have a proper fire pit that includes a grate over top.

TOWN OF DELISLE (Next Meeting June 9, 7:00pm)

own Council held a regular meeting in the Town Hall on May 12th.

AECOM will be hired to perform an Asset Management Plan for the water treatment plant and the 2 sewage lift stations.

The Town will replace 3 outdated computers in the Town Office.

A sneeze guard will be installed for the front counters in the Town Office.

Brittany Wich submitted her resignation as a Town Councillor effective June 1st. Brittany and her family have sold their home and will be moving out of the community. Her council seat will be left vacant until the general election to be held this fall. A big thank you to Brittany for all her work on Town Council and in the community!

All future council meetings will be held in the Town Hall until further notice.

Effective June 1st, Taffy Taylor will be the supervisor at the transfer station.

The Town Office is now open to the general public.

Only one customer is allowed in the office at a time.

Scotiabank customers can now pay their property taxes and water and sewer accounts through on line banking. Please use your 7-digit account number for taxes and your 8-digit account number for water & sewer. At the beginning of June, this service will also be available for CIBC customers. After that time, customers of all the major Canadian financial institutions will have access to the on line banking services for property taxes and water & sewer accounts.

esidents are to be reminded of some of the policies and bylaws in place in the Village.

* Speed – the posted speed in the Village is 40 km/hr; speed is reduced to 25 km/hr in front of the Day Care and the School; soon to be posted is the speed limit on Grid 672 between the Old Highway 7 and new Highway 7 is 60km/hr. Grid 672 will now be the thoroughfare to the Industrial Area and the East end of Old Highway 7 will now be a stop street. * Noise – Bylaw 1-18 reminds residents that between the hours of 10pm and 6am on weekdays there shall be no operation of lawn mowers and roto tillers; hours extend on weekends from 10pm and 11am; further that no person shall cause to be made noises that disturb or annoy or detract from the comfort or safety to any person at any time * Traffic/Parking – no person shall park a boat, motorhome or RV on any street longer than a period of seven days without permission * Garbage and Recycling Carts should be placed curbside by 7am on the appropriate pick up day * The “Trail” from the North end of Main street that extends to Willard Drive is Private Property and should not be used as a “road” to Willard Drive. As soon as Line Locates are done, the trail will be barricaded off to traffic * Street Repairs will begin next week. The repairs will begin on 2nd Avenue and 2nd Street. Please have vehicles removed from the streets to allow for the work to be done.

Danny’s Golf Sales & Service Opening in June in Delisle

D

elisle resident Dan Turner is taking the next step in his lifetime of involvement with the game of golf by opening Danny’s Golf Sales and Service in Delisle. He is located in the former R & R Service building along highway 7 where he has spent the past couple of months renovating the building to convert it into his new store. He is still adding some finishing touches and plans to be open in early June.

Dan essentially grew up on a golf course, as his dad was the groundskeeper and golf pro at the Saskatoon Golf & Country Club for four decades. That is where Dan, at a very young age, helped his dad build a new green at the #3 hole and spent many years repairing golf clubs and golf carts.

Dan struck out on his own in 1980 and opened a golf club repair shop in Saskatoon where he provided service to almost every golf pro in Saskatchewan.

He became the Saskatchewan distributor of Club Car golf carts from 1985 and has serviced hundreds of golf carts of all makes and model over the years.

Dan is now drawing on his lifetime of experience to provide golfers with services that are not readily available in this neck of the woods.

When he opens in June he will be offering custom fitted golf clubs, built specifically for you.

He has an indoor driving range where new golfers can come to learn how to swing a golf club and, based on your age, size and strength, Dan will help determine the right type of shaft stiffness and length, club head weight and grip size to then assemble you a set of golf clubs that will get you off to the best start possible.

Current amateur golfers can also take advantage of Dan’s services by having him take a look at their swing and offer not only a fitting for a new set of clubs, but also tips on what to adjust in your swing to improve your ball striking.

He even offers lessons for those that need more assistance.

To help children get started in golfing Dan will even cut down clubs to the size of the child and set them up with 3 or 4 clubs to get them started in the game.

Dan says his goal is to “promote the game of golf and help people just have fun with golfing”.

Dan also has a service bay where he will repair your gas or electric power cart and turf equipment.

Later this season he plans to be rebuilding used carts to sell on the lot and is looking at bringing in a line of new turf equipment for your home lawn maintenance as well as for your own private golf green.

Yes that’s right, private golf green !

Not only does Dan provide consultations to golf courses that need to repair or build a golf course, he will design and construct a personal golf hole on your private acreage.

This can include multiple tee boxes and any size and quality of green you desire. Projects run anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000, depending on what you want and what your property is like.

Look for Dan’s “OPEN” sign in June. He may be just the right guy to help you get started in the game of golf or to take a couple of strokes off your game.

Celebrate Saskatchewan Trails Day on June 6 While Practicing Physical Distancing

A

s people look for new ways to spend their time during the pandemic, many are turning to trails as a healthy and fun way to get some exercise and a little adventure. The Saskatchewan Trails Association (STA) invites all residents to get out and enjoy the trail network on Saskatchewan Trails Day on June 6, while at the same time adhering to provincial health standards.

“Escape the indoors, and experience the beauty of Saskatchewan trails,” said STA President David Powell. “Bring your family and friends, or even have your own solo adventure on a new trail. Keep in mind the safety of yourself and others while practicing social distancing. While out on your exploration, we encourage you to share your experience and photos with us using #SaskTrailsDay. You can follow us and on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.”

If by chance you do run into other trail lovers along your hike, the STA advises that you adhere to the guidelines set out by the Centre for Disease Control (CDC). You can help protect yourself by practicing physical distancing which is defined as maintaining a 2-meter (6feet) distance away from others and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth as well as any other surfaces others may have come in contact with. It is also important to practice good hand hygiene.

If you are looking to find trails in isolated locations, then check out the STA’s on-line trail directory at sasktrails.ca/trail-directory/. The directory provides information about trails, locations, difficulty, length, photos and maps. It can help you get from point A to point B on your journey to experience nature on the trails.

As part of the Saskatchewan Trails Day celebrations, the STA is launching a month-long photo contest. Make sure to take lots of photos while hiking one of the trails and submit them to us through Instagram using #SaskTrailsDay. You can enter as often as you like and the best photo, as selected by the STA board of directors, will receive a prize package valued at $200. All photos become property of the STA and will be used to promote your favourite trails. The contest begins on Saskatchewan Trails Day and wraps up on June 30 as

After you’ve experienced the trail system, the STA encourages you to make a donation to the trail of your choice, and to help support trail development and maintenance programs in Saskatchewan.

Memberships to become a STA member are also available for as little as $25 per year for an individual. STA members have accesses to trail funding and other resources and can also attend and vote at meetings of members. Highway 7 Resurfacing in June

A

highway resurfacing project will involve about 40 km of paving on Highway 7 from Delisle to Harris.

The estimated cost of this project is $12.2 million, including ministry-supplied materials and construction engineering.

The contractor, AECON Transportation West Ltd. is expected to begin road work within the next week and is expected to complete the project, weather permitting, near the end of June.

Expect minor delays. One lane will be open most of the time. Watch for workers and equipment, obey signs and slow down.

Farmers Left Behind

ur farmers have had much to deal with from last year’s tough harvest season, the trade dispute with China, the Liberals carbon tax, an early snowfall, illegal blockades, and now COVID-19.

Our agricultural sector is suffering due to the pandemic and subsequent lockdowns, yet farmers have largely been left on the outside of any aid announcements. The Liberal government has so far refused to allocate any additional funding to agriculture and has ignored Conservative calls to connect young people looking for work with farmers seeking help.

This was made all the more apparent when Prime Minister Trudeau tried to pass off previously announced funding as new aid.

Conservative Shadow Minister for Agriculture, John Barlow, together with Deputy Shadow Minister Richard Lehoux, released this statement in response to Trudeau’s announcement: “The Trudeau Liberals claimed they were supporting the agriculture sector, but we have since learned that the funding isn’t new. This is a slap in the face to farmers and producers across the country.

“Farm groups in Canada have been vocal about their need for support during this pandemic, including the Canadian Federation of Agriculture which asked the government for $2.6 billion in support. Instead of helping the agriculture sector when it needs it the most, the Liberals decided to re-announce the $125 million already budgeted in the Agri-Recovery program.

“This is not the first time during this pandemic that the Liberal government has re-announced programs and funding for the agriculture sector. The first major agriculture announcement the Liberals made, $5 billion in funding for Farm Credit Canada, was a 2019 campaign commitment and unrelated to COVID-19.

“The unprecedented nature of this pandemic calls for unprecedented action, not recycled programs by a government that does not consider the agriculture sector to be a priority.”

Poster Contest Winners and Fair Cancellations

he Vanscoy & District Agricultural Society was thrilled to receive creative drawings from many talented students in the RM of Vanscoy. Each piece of artwork was done in black and white and was inspired by the theme Days Gone By as well as the idea of Coming Together.

Out of all our wonderful entrants from grades 4 – 6, the Vanscoy & District Agricultural Society awarded first prize, as well as $15 to Everett Brown.

Second place and $10 was awarded to Kaiya Mitchell.

Third place and $5 was awarded to Samuel Kielo.

We absolutely loved every drawing submitted and thank each student for sending their work.

The Vanscoy & District Agricultural Society is sad to announce that our 2020 Fair at Fall Fest will be cancelled this year. This has been an annual event for us and the community, and it is a pity that we must cancel this year. However, we value the health and safety of all those who were planning on attending and participating in the event. With the slow comeback towards ‘normal’, we are uncertain that our group could safely support large crowds during the event.

Though you won’t be seeing our catalogues this year, we hope that you still find crafts and recipes to keep you happy, as well as keep busy in your flower and vegetable gardens. We’d like to thank the Delisle & District Recreation Association for partnering with us on planning this event. They always provide so much help and we can’t wait to work with them again next year to put on a Fair and Fall Fest even better than before in 2021.

B

orden Farmers Market will not be open in 2020 due to Covid 19 restrictions and not being able to use the Borden Fire Hall.

Both the Co- op Grocery store and Co-op Hardware Store are open from Monday to Saturday.

The two hairdressing shops, Block Agencies insurance office and the Post Office are all open, but with various restrictions.

The Health Centre is open (by appointment only) as well as the pharmacy.

Gas Plus is open seven days a week.

Delisle Fall Fest 2020 is Cancelled

ue to the current Covid 19 restrictions the Delisle Fall Fest has been cancelled for the 2020 season.

With difficulty raising donations in these uncertan times and no guarantee on what restriction may be in place by

September, the committee has cancelled the event.

They wish to thank all of the volunteers who were so willing to help again this year and hope they will consider being available next year to make this festival bigger and better than ever.
