Editorial Daddy, is this how I’ll die ?

s our friends south of the border grapple with yet another mass shooting at a school in Uvalde, Texas, where dozens of children along with their teachers were slaughtered, we can be assured that in the aftermath of such a horrific tragedy, their government will once again not do anything to address it.

90% of the citizens want to see some kind of gun control, such as proper background checks, but the politicians are still in the grip of the National Rifle Association that held their political based conference just down the road from the massacre, mere hours later.

There they wrapped themselves in the American flag and brought in their paid politicians to blab on about the second ammendment and how “the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun”.

Well there were plenty of “good guys” outside that grade school for an hour !

Guess that one isn’t really true.

The Second Ammendment allows them to bear arms for “well regulated militia” to protect them from the government, yet somehow the January insurrection on their capital had no guns present.

Guess that one isn’t really needed either.

Daniel Defence, the manufacturer of the weapons that those school children were murdered with, posts on their website the typical “kids are in our prayers” crap that politicians also spew, but still they will run an ad with a toddler cradling their assault weapons ! (see picture) The whole nation doesn’t seem to know what to do about what is destroying their very society.

They might want to start with that.

married, we were visiting Mrs. B's mom, Grandma Barbara. I was still in my rookie years as a son-in-law and Grandma Barbara was still, um, hopeful about me - you know, hopeful that her eldest daughter hadn’t married a . . well, a lunkhead.

On the Saturday morning of our visit Grandma Barbara told me the dishwasher wasn’t working, it was leaking quite badly, and asked if I could I fix it. She explained she was having about 30 or so people for supper that evening, and it needed to be working in order to cope with the clean-up.

I was perhaps a little too eager, and said yes, I could do that, when in truth I was more familiar with 'dishwasher' as a job than as an appliance.

And in my nervousness about my ability to make the repair, and trying to make light of the situation, I thought I would tell a little joke about dishwashers, but the phone rang and the moment passed.

So I sprawled out on the kitchen floor and stuck my head under the dishwasher, got a face full of water and concluded that, yes, indeed, the dishwasher was leaking.

was still going, well you know where she was going, she was going from stove to sink and from fridge to counter, stepping over me and walking around me, being careful not to drop or spill anything on me.

And as it was getting close to supper time, a few ladies came over to help Barbara with setting up and making final preparations for the onslaught of guests whose arrival was imminent.

And when the ladies came into the kitchen and saw me sprawled out on the kitchen floor with my head stuck under the dishwasher, Barbara just commented, very matter of factly, that "Brian is fixing the dishwasher" and they all followed her lead, all of them going from stove to sink and from fridge to counter, stepping over me and walking around me, being careful not to drop or spill anything on me.

Mercifully, a few minutes later I completed the repair (successfully!) and I was able to pull my head out from under the dishwasher, get up off the kitchen floor, gather up my tools and slink off.

I was embarrassed that I had to make 3 trips into town for parts, embarrassed that it had taken all day to fix what should have been a quick and simple repair, and generally feeling very much like the lunkhead that Grandma Barbara had hoped I wasn’t.

But the point of this story is that Grandma Barbara, even while preparing for a multitude of people to descend on her for supper, and even while having me underfoot, literally underfoot, all day, having to step over me and walk around me, even with all that, Barbara remained patient and calm, kind and gracious and thanked me for fixing the dishwasher.

And because I was so busy scurrying around all day, being so intent on fixing the dishwasher, I never did get around to telling her that joke - you know, the one about the bride having to wear white so the dishwasher would match the fridge and the stove.

Probably just as well.

‘Whataboutism’ - Is There Such a Thing ?

If everyone is guilty of something, is no one guilty of anything?

Morality doesn’t pick sides. It doesn’t care about borders, political ideologies, socio-economic status, religions, genders, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or whether you like pineapple on your pizza. (Have I covered everything we use to divide ourselves?).

There's good, and there's bad. Bad behaviour is bad behaviour. Yes, it's that simple—it's that black and white. However these days calling out bad behaviour is fraught with self-righteous deflection.

Increasingly, the following scenario occurs.

You'll be having a conversation. Perhaps over coffee, a few drinks, or a meal. Inevitably Russia will come up, or Trudeau, or Biden. Your conversation partner bought into the social pressure that they're a Russian sympathizer if they don't stand by Ukraine as we're being told to do. Finally, you give in to your animal instinct and ask the “elephant in the room" questions.

"Obama launched airstrikes in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Yemen, Somalia and Pakistan. Where was the outrage then?" or "Canada sanctions Russia for invading Ukraine. Why did Canada not sanction the U.S. when it invaded Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya, etc.?"

Yay freethinkers!

Have the nerve to mention the "mistakes," made by our side, and the blended word whataboutism will be used against you. (Fun fact, "whataboutism" was added to the dictionary in October 2021.)

In philosophy, whataboutism is known as "tu quoque," pointing out hypocrisy. I've yet to meet a person who doesn't become defensive when their hypocrisy, or their side’s hypocrisy, is pointed out.

When Michael Corleone, in Godfather II, said, "Senator, we are all part of the same hypocrisy," he eloquently, I would even say artistically, used whataboutism to neutralize any sense of moral superiority Senator Geary felt he had over him. Michael understood that his hypocrisy served his interests, and his family’s and that the same hypocrisy served the senator's interests. The hypocrisy the U.S. uses to serve and protect its interests is the same hypocrisy Russia, Turkey, China, U.K.—all nations—use to serve and protect their interests.

As to why Canada didn’t sanction the U.S. when it invaded Iraq, Afghanistan, Syria, Libya et al.; it’s in Canada’s best interest to take a hypocritical stance of not showing disapproval of its southern neighbour's wrongdoings and sometimes going as far as supporting the U.S.’s wrongdoings.

Whataboutism was coined during the postwar years when American-Russian relations were rather tense, and the following back-and-forth occurred: The Soviet Union would commit a crime, according to the West. Washington would call them on it. The Kremlin would then point out that the U.S. was also committing heinous acts. These accusations would contain the phrase "What about …" and point out America's Jim Crow laws, which until the Civil Rights Act of 1964 weren't entirely extinct, the U.S.'s bombing sprees, or any other embarrassing facts about the West. The U.S., and its western allies, began responding to the Russian critique by labelling it "Whataboutism." American intellectuals would later use the term "moral equivalence."

Whataboutism in action a few years back: Obama laments about Putin's 2014 invasion and seizure of Crimea. In response, Putin mentions Kosovo and the Scottish Independence Referendum.

Russia's crimes are well known, as are Western (e.g., Apartheid, Israeli–Palestinian conflict, TurkishKurdish conflict, systemic racism, U.S.-led war in Iraq, human rights violations against immigrants, indigenous people, Guantánamo Bay). Conveniently, mainstream scholars have never pointed out that all nations are amoral and capable of committing great evil.

Western countries sell themselves as "developed" and "democratic." They’re quick to criticize countries they dislike. The world cheered when Ukrainians stocked up Molotov cocktails and took up arms against the Russians. However, when Palestinians and Iraqis do the same thing, they're labelled "terrorists."

Whatever you call it: whataboutism, moral equivalence, two wrongs, double standards, it boils down to this: My side isn't subject to the same moral rules as the other side. My side has excusing factors for what it did. (or is doing) What nonsense! There isn't one moral law for the goose and another for the gander. Moral rules are universal. Whatever your political stance, whatever your geopolitical background, crime is crime, racism is racism, hypocrisy is hypocrisy, and human rights violations are human rights violations.

People who have the courage to be a libertarian thinker understand this: If it's wrong when Stephen Harper did it, it's wrong when Justin Trudeau does it.

If Trump's sexual predations were wrong, so were Bill Clinton's predations. If Russia launching missiles at Ukrainians is wrong, then Turkey's aerial bombing of Kurdish civilians is also wrong.

Western media tries to explain why our wrongs are less bad, less evil, and excusable, than the wrongs of "the other side." Wrong is wrong regardless of who does it.

Whataboutism doesn't just point to historical wrongdoings.

Trudeau letting in an unlimited number of Ukrainian refugees begs the “what about” question, why isn't he doing the same for Afghans, Syrians, etc., refugees?

You can draw your own conclusions as to the reasons why.

A question such as this comes across as being centrist.

Actually, "what about" questions are far from ambivalent. Moral clarity requires disruptive conversations— uncomfortable conversations. Moral clarity condemns self-interest and the even worse self-serving consensus talk for the high-grade cowardly drivel it is.

Here's an example. If there’s one thing both sides of Washington's political divide agree on, and Canadians look at enviously, that is the virtue and beauty of U.S. force projection. Based on their actions Democrat and Republican presidents as far back as Harry S. Truman, seem to have a fondest for bombing poor people in distant lands. Pundits love it. Western foreign policy establishments love it. Western mainstream media love it.

But this is utter insanity. If bombing Americans is wrong, then bombing the people of Yemen is wrong.

No one—not even those who speculate on the geopolitical reasons for Russia going into Ukraine—disagrees with condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

However, ignoring that the U.S. has been violating other nations' sovereignty—Chile, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Argentina, Iraq, Iran, Brazil, Angola, Zaire, Cuba, Libya, Afghanistan, China to name a few—for years is hypocritical.

It doesn't matter what gets hashed out in bipartisan meetings; ethical standards are universal. The Ukrainian resistance and the civilian victims of Russia's invasion are given sympathetic coverage by Western media. This raises the "what about" question of why there hasn't been a comparable response when the victims aren't white, Christian Europeans or when the aggressor is the U.S. or a U.S. ally? The double standards and resulting hypocrisy coming out of Washington, and the West, is obvious.

A recent example: President Joe Biden asserted that "nations have a right to sovereignty and territorial integrity." He is 100% on point! However, the U.S. is the only government to formally recognize Israel's illegal occupation of Syria's Golan Heights and Morocco's annexation of the entire nation of Western Sahara, both seized by force in defiance of the United Nations. See the hypocrisy?

Another recent example: Despite the decree issued by Joe Biden on October 7, 2021, Washington didn't react to Turkey's attacks targeting civilians in Rojava. Such blatant hypocrisy invites "what about" questions.

Two Nations Clinging Onto 'What Once Was.' Regardless of your political stripes, it's easy to see two declining superpowers—a corrupt and morally bankrupt America and the crumbling oligarchy of Putin's Russia—trying to hang onto what once was. Today the U. S. is an imploding republic whose global influence is dwindling, while Russia is a rusted-out autocracy that can barely project strength outside of its neighbourhood.

These different "Rome is burning" scenarios don't give Washington the right to one set of moral laws and Moscow to another set. The moral arc of the universe doesn't bend that way. When Washington accuses Russia of hacking America's elections, then moral seriousness demands it addresses U.S. interference in past Russian elections. If it's wrong for Iran to oppress women, then it's wrong for Saudi Arabia to oppress women. If China is barbaric for using capital punishment, so is the U.S. If the U.S. recognizes the Republic of Kosovo, it should recognize Kurdish self-determination in Kurdistan and Rojava as well.

Isn't all oppression of women wrong? Isn't all capital punishment barbaric? Shouldn't the desire for self-determination be listened to empathically and at the very least applauded?

Only when self-interest is removed from the equation will the answer be a universal "Yes!" Whataboutism is the complaint of the intellectually lazy. One person's whataboutism is another person's pointing out similar cases to support an analogy.

Someone who say, "That's whataboutism!" doesn't like the connecting of dots.

Those who use the term whataboutism do so to deflect the hypocrisy being pointed out, especially if it's hypocrisy the West benefits from. As long as there are double standards that serve our interests, there'll always be those who'll say, when asked a "what about" question, "That’s whataboutism!"—what can you do?

TOWN OF ASQUITH

squith Town Council held its regular council meeting on May 11, 2022. Attending was Mayor Gail Erhart, and councillors, Cecilia Mryglod, Darcy Stack, Jodi Nehring, and Wade Monks-Janzen, and Jeff Eide.

Also attending was C.A.O. Kathy Picketts. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Erhart at 7:00 p.m.

A resolution was made to accept the council minutes from the April 13, 2022, regular council meeting.

Council made a motion to accept the April 2022 financials and April 2022 bank reconciliations as presented to them at the meeting.

Accounts Paid in the amount of $24,951.28 and Accounts Payable of $99,624.96 was accepted as presented.

There will be a Canada Day Celebration on July 1, 2022, in the Town of Asquith. There will be more details to come about the events happening that day.

Asquith Town Council accepted tender bids from Holly Cross for the utility wagon for $25.00 and Gale Stack for the plastic cutlery for $25.00.

The Asquith Fire Department will be hosting their annual Pig Roast/Show and Shine and Dance on June 4, 2022, in the Town of Asquith.

A reminder goes out to all individuals that the Town of Asquith has A Burning Bylaw which dictates that one can have a fire in town for recreational use only. Only clean wood/firewood can be burned in your fire pits - no painted/treated wood, refuse, leaves, etc. should be burned. Be kind to your neighbor and to the environment and burn only clean wood materials. Also, no bonfires are allowed - please keep the size of your backyard fires moderate.

VILLAGE OF VANSCOY

ouncil of the Village of Vanscoy would like to invite all residents to the Celebration of Funding for the Distribution Upgrade Project. Included in this project is the expansion of the existing water treatment plant and added reservoir capacity, upgrading the pumping equipment and controls and the addition of a backup power generator. Events will take place on Saturday June 18 at 1:00pm at the Distribution Center on the north side of the Village Office Building.

Residents are to be reminded of a few policies/ bylaws in the Village: while construction is ongoing with the distribution project, watering of lawns and yards will be restricted to odd/even days. This will help to preserve water in the reservoir and help the treatment plant regenerate.

RM OF VANSCOY - June 9, 9:00am

Back lane pickup commenced at the beginning of May. Residents are reminded to NOT place dog waste in the bags left to be picked up. There is no off-leash dog park in the Village, so dogs must be leashed at all times while not on the property of the owner and owners MUST pick up the dog waste.

TOWN OF OUTLOOK - June 8 & 22, 7:00pm

Residents are also reminded of the Outdoor Fire Bylaw in place in the Village. Fires are permitted in an outdoor burning appliance or receptacle constructed of cement or sheet metal.

The receptacle must be located at least 10 feet from any building or combustible structure.

The burning of rubbish or garden refuse is strictly prohibited.

VILLAGE OF HARRIS - June 8, 7:00pm

go. We have our annual spring clean-up and metal bin booked this month. Let’s all do our part to get our village cleaned up, this includes picking up after your pooch. We have a number of puppy number two’s that have been left along sidewalks. The Dance Club has their annual recital on April 30th and Diefenbaker Daze is a go for the first weekend in June!

Northern Blacktop will be hired to apply a 35 mm. layer of asphalt at the Railway Avenue/ 1st Street West intersection as well as a 20 mm. layer of asphalt on Railway Avenue from 1st Street West to 3rd Avenue for a total estimated cost of $86,000 plus taxes.

The Town supports the Rodeo Committee’s proposal to make improvements to the old concession building located at the Rodeo grounds south of Elevator Road and the Town will contribute $2,100 for electrical improvements to the building.

The Town granted permission to Carole Gallagher for the establishment of a recurring Farmers’ Market at 223 – 1st Street West.

‘STAY-cation’ Art Tour River and Rail ArtVenture Host Unique Weekend Tour June 25-26

O

n May 29-June 4, Tourism Saskatchewan will launch Saskatchewan Tourism Week, with a call for people here to support locally, to plan road trips and staycations in the province and to make travel memories right at home. The River and Rail ArtVenture is poised to make that happen in the West Central Region on June 25 and 26 again this year.

The Tour continues to bring visitors of all ages and interests together with our Makers in their home areas.

This is an opportunity to travel, see the beauty and opportunities in the area while supporting a wide variety of artists, artisans and agricultural entrepreneurs. It’s all about building community at the grassroots.

The feedback from social media and personal contacts indicates that people from all over are excited to join the free, self-guided tour. Organizers and makers are gearing up for an even larger response on the weekend, with 30 venues in 9 communities. There has also been broad support from tour towns and generous sponsors to make it possible for River and Rail ArtVenture 2022 to really shine.

‘STAY-cation’ Nature Activities Calling all Private Eyes!

W

Spring is Here and It’s Time to NatureWatch!

ith all the little ninjas and private eyes in and around their yards this spring, the coming weeks will be a perfect time to get them engaged in NatureWatch!

This citizen science project gives public of all ages an opportunity to learn about their environment while contributing to a data set that scientists need to monitor and protect it.

This data is being used to add to our knowledge of the effects of climate change and other impacts on biodiversity.

People of all ages and skill sets can participate in NatureWatch. The four programs allow you to participate at your own pace and chosen locations, even in your own backyard. While the monitoring protocols are scientifically rigorous, they are quick and easy to follow, and cater to beginner and expert alike.

Some of the NatureWatch programs are PlantWatch, FrogWatch, and WormWatch.

PlantWatch participants observe the first bloom, mid bloom and leaf out of 18 native or 2 non-native plants in their area.

Observations of a plant at the same location over many years will help us understand how climate change is affecting the blooming times of specific plants in Saskatchewan.

FrogWatch participants listen for toad and frog calls during mating season in the springtime.

Frogs and toads can be used as indicator species of a healthy environment, because they are vulnerable to changes in the atmosphere, the land, or the water. By participating in this program you will help increase our knowledge of frogs and toads in Canada.

WormWatch participants record how many and what species of earthworms are located at their site. The number of worms in a specific volume of earth can tell us a lot about how the habitat is being managed, because earthworms are very sensitive to soil disturbance.

or many families, summer includes boating and swimming. Unfortunately, each year tragic and avoidable water related fatalities occur.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of unintentional death for children ages one to four. A small child can disappear in seconds and can drown in only a few centimeters of water – enough to cover the nose and mouth. Other factors for adults in water related fatalities include water current, and alcohol consumption.

Prevention

• Supervision The absence of adult supervision is a factor in most child drownings. Always watch children around water even if they can swim. Never swim alone. If a child is missing always check the water first.

• Diving Avoid diving headfirst into water unless you are properly trained and sure the water is deep enough. Serious injuries, including paralysis can occur from diving headfirst into unknown water.

• Open Water Never underestimate the power of currents. Swimmers or Waders can be swept away in an instant. Always be aware of currents in rivers and abrupt drop-offs. Know your limits!

Drowning doesn’t look like Drowning!

• Drowning persons aren’t usually able to speak or call out for help because their breathing is impaired.

• Drowning persons usually cannot wave for help. Instinct forces them to press down on the water surface so they can keep their mouths out of the water to breath.

• Drowning persons bodies remain upright in the water, with no evidence of a supporting kick. Unless rescued, they can only struggle for 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs.

he Town of Delisle, along with the Delisle & District Recreation Association, are pleased to announce that we were approved for funding through the Canada Community Revitalization Fund (CCRF) for the paving of the Harold Worth Park Walking Path. The CCRF investment of $85,145, along with the additional Town of Delisle funding of $28,471 will bring this $113,886 project to completion.

The paving of the 1.45km walking path is expected to happen in late summer. Pavement will mean current and future Harold Worth Park users will have year-round access to this beautiful walking path.

“Our government, through the CCRF will support paving a local walking path for the Town of Delisle” said the Honourable Daniel Vandal, Minister for PrairiesCan. “This investment will help provide residents and visitors with accessible outdoor recreation spaces to enjoy year-round.”

Delisle Splash Park Grand Opening

D

elisle recently celebrated on Fri., May 27 the ceremonial opening of its spray park, which will provide countless recreational opportunities for the community just in time for the summer.

Construction on the project near 300 Fourth St. W. began in the spring of 2021. This new facility includes such features as: a 2,600 square foot splash pad with about an additional 8,000 square foot green space with benches and more picnic tables to be installed in the future, along with associated works. The completed infrastructure will be owned and operated by the Town of Delisle.

Under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program, the Government of Canada is contributing up to $123,930 toward the project and the Government of Saskatchewan is contributing up to $103,265. The remaining costs of the project will be covered by the Delisle Spray Park Committee’s fund-raising efforts.

The Town of Delisle has donated the land for the facility and supported necessary utility moves.

Ditch Mowing in Saskatchewan

Producers can once again take advantage of free hay in Saskatchewan’s provincial highway ditches.

Hay can be salvaged any time during the spring or summer months. Before and including July 8, landowners or lessees who are nearest/adjacent to the ditch have the first option to cut or bale material, but after that day anyone can cut and bale without permission from the adjacent landowner or lessee, as long as no salvage operations have already begun. It is recommended that participants contact their local ministry office to provide contact information and limits on where they are salvaging hay to avoid disputes.

Hay must be cut at a uniform height in ditches and bales must be placed at least eight metres away from the shoulder of the highway. Bales must be removed by August 8, otherwise they may be subject to removal and disposal by the ministry.

After August 8, bales must be removed immediately following haying operations. The ministry may also remove and dispose of hay bales in locations deemed unsafe for drivers.

Ditch Mowing The ministry is working on its annual early mowing program along high traffic volume highways, which begins June 7 and will continue until July 15, except for the southwest and west central areas of Saskatchewan will not receive a first cut to allow additional opportunities for ranchers and farmers to salvage hay in anticipation of below normal moisture conditions. Contractors cut a fourmetre-wide swath along shoulders adjacent to major provincial highways. During this time, mowing may be completed near some highway intersections and interchanges, railway crossings and tourism facilities.

Regular ditch mowing (full-width) will occur along all four-lane highways between July 15 and the fall months in all areas of the province. High traffic two-lane highways will receive a twelve-metre cut.
