New Perdue Arena Has Grand Opening
he community of Perdue celebrated the long awaited Grand Opening of their new arena on February 23rd. The day began with an Initiation hockey game before the crowd gathered in the lobby at 1pm. Mayor Dave Miller made a brief speech after which all of the Perdue hockey kids held a lengthy ribbon which was cut to officially open the new arena. This was followed by a cake cutting and a Senior Pirate alumni game. A supper and social at the Rec Complex capped off the long road back since the old rink burnt down in 2015. Through the efforts of volunteers the $1.8 million arena is now ready for generations to come.

Delisle Student Receives $5,000 Scholarship
T
he Horatio Alger Association of Canada provides $1.2 million annually in need-based scholarship support for deserving students in all Canadian provinces and territories.
One hundred and sixty $5,000 Canadian Scholarships are funded through the generosity of the Members of the Canadian Association and applicants must meet the following criteria: - Be graduating high school (or be in the final year of CEGEP) with plans to enter university in the fall of 2019 - Exhibit a strong commitment to pursue and complete a bachelor’s degree program at an accredited university - Demonstrate critical financial need ($65,000 or less annual net income per family is required) - Be involved in co-curricular and community service activities - Display integrity and perseverance in overcoming adversity - Maintain a minimum grade percentage of 65 - Attend high school (or CEGEP) and reside in Canada - Be Canadian citizens
One of this year’s recipients of a Canadian Scholarship is a Delisle Composite School student, Myles Wright. Myles is in grade 12 and heard about the Horatio Alger scholarship from his mom who saw a poster at Hanley school on October 20th. He had only a week notice to submit an application, but made the deadline. He was surprised when in February he heard he won $5000 ($1000 x 5 years). He is one of six from Saskatchewan that were accepted for this award. He is glad to receive the award, and plans to graduate high school and continue his education at the U of S to complete a degree in Electrical Engineering. He hopes to get more scholarships to help pay the $45 000 for his post-secondary education. Myles plays clarinet and saxophone in the Prairie Spirit West Concert Band and Jazz Band and is a member of the Saskatoon Youth Jazz Orchestra, the Warman Community Band and the Diamond Jazz Band. He is also a senior member of the Vanscoy Multiple 4-H club where he has been a member for the past 12 years.

Size Matters... apparently
have been ignoring the recent criticisms about how thin the last couple of issue of this paper have been, but when my mother mentioned it, it really hurt. Maybe I’m just lazy (her reason), or maybe it’s the brutal cold (you’ve heard of shrinkage), or maybe there just hasn’t been a lot going on around here.... I’m going to go with the later. Things should be changing soon though. There are many Annual Meetings listed in this issue, which means people will
be gearing up for coming activities. Why not crawl out of hibernation and attend one !
Congratulations to the Winners of our annual Valentine’s Day Contest
St Patrick’s Day is also around the corner. There’s a couple of dinners you could attend or maybe just head down to the local pub ? Too cold for green beer, but that’s why God made Irish Whiskey !

Delisle finished the regular season with a 38-1-1 record. The win tied the PJHL record of 38 (40game schedule) wins in a season. rently awaiting the outcome of the North Division Survivor Series between the Saskatoon Royals and West Central Rage to see who they will play. Vanscoy Early Learning Centre Receives Funding Approval for Delisle Location
he Vanscoy and District Early Learning Center (VELC) is happy to announce that funding for a 32 space Early Learning Center for the community of Delisle has been approved by the Ministry of Education. The VELC management and board are working with the Prairie Spirit school division on this project and will have more information to follow by the spring. The opening date is not known at this time but is in the works for 2020. The VELC is also fundraising for the existing Vanscoy centre, for a fire sprinkler system and infant sleep room which is now under construction and has
received major funding from sources such as Nutrien, Village of Vanscoy, Monsanto as well as other smaller donations from members of surrounding communities. There have been countless fundraisers to support this project and the VELC board and staff would like to thank everyone involved. This project will allow the center to accommodate infants ages 6 weeks to 17 months. Previously the center only could accommodate children ages 18 months to age 12. This will be a huge benefit for the community to allow families to go back to work after a 12 month or less parental/maternity leave. With everything completed the center will be able to accommodate 3 infants starting March 1st. Call the center if you are in need of care for an infant age 6 weeks to 17 months. The center has full time openings in other age categories as well. Tickets for the Rib and Wing fundraiser on March 23rd at the Vanscoy Hotel are now available by email reservation, vanscoyelc@hotmail.com or pick up at the VELC. The Staff and Board of the VELC would like to thank everyone for the support over the past 9 years that it has been open.

RM OF MONTROSE
M of Montrose Council held a regular meeting on February 14, 2019.
It was decided at this meeting that the RM would proceed with the purchase of a 2008 International 5600I gravel truck. The truck will be used to upgrade Donavon and O’Malley grids. A cost analysis has proven a great deal of savings by purchasing and running our own truck. We currently have our 5 ton single axle gravel truck up for tender. Upon year end analysis the RM experienced lower expenses throughout 2018, which resulted in a surplus. This surplus was a result of less gravel being applied to roads due to the dry season as well as less custom work required. Another reason for the surplus was the collection of tax arrears. The list of land arrears will be posted as of March 4th, 2019. The list will be available in local newspapers as well posted on the RM bulletin boards. We continue to encourage rate payers to make tax installments which can eliminate large amounts owing at year end. With the recent snowfall, the crew at the RM of Montrose #315 have had their work cut out for them. The foreman has advised that he is monitoring areas exposed to drifting snow. We hope that with this snow, we will see more spring runoff and an increased moisture level for spring seeding. Please contact the RM office if you wish to have your driveway plowed.

Building Asquith: Councillor Goodnough reported that he had a meeting with Post Media to discuss the future advertising for the Town. He suggested that the next advertisement also showcase Lord Asquith School. SUMA Convention: Councillor Goodnough and Councillor D. MOONEY AGENCIES LTD. PURCHASES CHABEN-MCPHERSON AGENCIES LOCATED IN SASKATOON
M
ooney Agencies Ltd. is pleased to announce the purchase of ChabenMcPherson Agencies at 111 2nd Ave North in Saskatoon ! We continue to see consolidation in many industries and businesses including insurance. Agriculture has experienced much consolidation already whether family farms or huge agri-business. Larger farms and businesses are better-positioned to remain profitable through economies of scale, as they have the necessary resources to invest in technology, to drive innovation and to become more efficient as profit margins narrow. Consolidation is often the result of succession with aging demographics forcing more retirements. With regards to the insurance industry specifically, we have experienced increased consolidation in recent years as many businesses (both insurance companies and brokerages) are reaching for a larger share of the marketplace. Given that the insurance brokerage is a cornerstone business in many small communities, this trend
away from local ownership is concerning to some but will likely continue. In an effort to remain competitive and sustainable in this environment, Mooney Agencies has expanded our footprint with the purchase of Chaben-McPherson Agencies located in downtown Saskatoon. We remain entirely locally owned and family operated with the same commitment to support all of the communities that we serve. Chaben-McPherson Agencies was founded in 1975 by Bob Chaben and Lyle McPherson. The business then transitioned and has been operated by partners Doug Chaben and Hugh Sutherland since 2002. We extend a warm welcome to all of our new friends and clients in Saskatoon and wish Hugh Sutherland the best in his retirement. Please visit or contact any of our 4 locations for full service insurance advice including SGI motor license issuing services in Saskatoon, Vanscoy, Colonsay and Young. Mooney Agencies is an independent insurance broker, working for you rather than an insurance company
or financial institution. We will properly assess your general insurance needs, shop for the best value in coverage and help you in the event of a claim. Mooney Agencies provides specialized advice for your farm or acreage, along with providing home, auto and commercial insurance solutions anywhere in Saskatchewan. Prairie Women on Snowmobiles Make Stop in Asquith
T
he Prairie Women on Snowmobiles made a stop in Asquith on their 2019 Mis-
sion. On Thursday, February 7 the group pulled into Asquith. Unfortunately the weather wasn’t co-operating so they had to trailer their sleds rather than ride in. An afternoon coffee stop was held at the Asquith Hotel which gave them a chance to meet and visit with community members. All proceeds from the ride go to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Cancer Foundation of Sask. If you would like to donate to Prairie Women on Snowmobiles you can contact Sabrina Chernyk pwostreas@gmail.com

Liberals Cover Up Grave Allegations
“As the saying goes, sunlight is the world’s best disinfectant.” Justin Trudeau, at the time running for Prime Minister, made this statement when he promised that a Liberal government would be the “most transparent government” in Canada’s history. Add this to the long list of broken promises from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The Globe and Mail reported that the Prime Minister’s Office pressured former Attorney-General Jody Wilson-Raybould to interfere in a criminal bribery case against Montreal-based construction company SNCLavalin. Her refusal to bow to that pressure resulted in her being fired from her role as Attorney-General. If true, this story would lead to troubling questions about the independence of our justice system. It is vital for the rule of law that all the facts are made clear and we learn whether improper political influence was exerted in a criminal case. Unfortunately, the Liberals have stonewalled attempts to find the truth from the start of this scandal.
The story broke the morning of Thursday February 7th. Within hours, Prime Minister Trudeau issued what can only be called a “non-denial denial”. Trudeau said that the story was false, but would only commit to not having “directed” Wilson-Raybould to interfere, which is not the allegation. Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer called his statement a “carefully scripted legalistic answer” that failed to address the allegations of inference with the rule of law. In Question Period, Scheer cross-examined new Attorney-General David Lametti. Scheer demanded that Wilson-Raybould be allowed to tell Canadians what had happened, but the Liberals refused to allow her to do so, relying instead on the canned “carefully scripted legalistic answer” from Lametti. After a request from the NDP, Ethics Commissioner Mario Dion has launched an investigation into the allegation, making this the seventh time an Ethics investigation has been launched against the Liberal government. Through all of this, the Liberals had still not allowed former AG Jody Wilson-Raybould to tell her side of the story. Prime Minister Trudeau justified this by stating that she could not speak on this issue because of attorney-client privilege. However, the Prime Minister is the client and is able to wave that right, as Stephen Harper recently did in allowing access to documents for Vice-Admiral Mark Norman’s defence.
Rather than waving privilege and allowing her to talk about what happened with this growing scandal, Trudeau spoke for her. He claimed that Wilson-Raybould’s presence in Cabinet – even though she had been shuffled to Veteran’s Affairs after being fired as AG – “speaks for itself”. Less than 24 hours later, Wilson-Raybould resigned from Cabinet, hiring a high-profile lawyer on her way out. If her presence in Cabinet “spoke for itself”, then surely her absence does as well. This past Wednesday at an emergency Justice Committee meeting, called for by the Opposition due to this sprawling scandal, the Liberal members continually blocked efforts to increase transparency. The Liberal members voted down a motion to give Wilson-Raybould an opportunity to tell the Committee what truly happened; they voted down a motion calling for the Prime Minister to wave attorney-client privilege; and they voted to hold parts of the investigation behind closed doors. So much for “sunlight”. Andrew Scheer has stated that despite the Trudeau Government’s attempts to cover this story up the Conservatives are not done looking for answers and are considering legal options on how to proceed. “[Prime Minister Trudeau] promised Canadians open and transparent government,” Scheer said, “he has betrayed that promise. Canadians deserve better.”
