ithin the Rural Municipalities of Corman Park and Vanscoy, and within 10 km from the western edge of the city of Saskatoon lies a community of over 300 households that has been dubbed “the GEMS area”. The GEMS area includes land within the historic school districts of Gideon, Edzell, Merrill, and Smithville.

Since the closure of these schools in the 1960s, children from the GEMS area have been bused to Saskatoon schools.

In 1996, a letter of understanding was signed by designates from Saskatoon (WEST) School Division No. 42 (now Prairie Spirit School Division No. 208) and GEMS residents. The signed document indicated that Saskatoon (WEST) School Division agreed to provide transportation to designated Saskatoon school facilities for GEMS students going forward.

Today, more than 70 children from the GEMS area are enrolled in designated Saskatoon elementary and high schools and receive transportation services from Prairie Spirit School Division. This number does not reflect students who have chosen not to use the service this year for reasons related to COVID-19, nor families who were denied service due to “lack of space”.

On January 28, 2021, a letter was issued from the Prairie Spirit School Division advising residents of the GEMS areas that bus service to Saskatoon schools would cease, effective June 30, 2021. GEMS families were not consulted regarding this decision. GEMS families were notified of the decision and given the option to retain bus service by transferring children to Dalmeny, Vanscoy and Delisle schools or continue to attend school in Saskatoon with parents responsible for their children’s transportation. ....continued on page 3

The Town of Asquith is inviting individuals to submit a resume for the position of seasonal Public Works Employee. This position runs from May 1 to October 31 (Employee may be asked to start earlier in April, depending upon the year).

Respondents must include with their resumes written proof of their Grade 12 matriculation, a valid drivers license and experience working with mowers, trimmers and machinery. Certification in water treatment/distribution and wastewater treatment/distribution is a priority requirement. The right candidate can work towards achieving this while on the job. Candidate must be willing to learn how to operate and utilize all town equipment, be willing to work well with others, be willing to take direction and be physically fit enough to lift at least fifty pounds.

Dear Ratepayers And Community Groups: In November 2020 the RM of Vanscoy introduced the Covid Support Grant to assist organizations in the community who are struggling as a result of Covid 19 and the restrictions and limitations the virus has created. Thirteen applications for funding were received, and every organization that applied was granted funding.

The RM of Vanscoy would like to allocate an additional portion of this grant program to assist charitable organizations, non-profits, community operating programs or recreation facilities within the community that are faced with additional costs or lost revenues related to Covid-19.

Examples of expenses suitable for funding assistance include purchasing cleaning supplies, procuring personal protective equipment and maintaining services.

Funding is flexible to allow municipalities to decide where the money is needed most, including proactive projects or future expenses.

If your organization would like to apply for funding and would meet any of the criteria above please submit a request in writing to the RM of Vanscoy.

Applications can be emailed to rm345@sasktel.net, mailed to Box 187, Vanscoy, SK. S0L 3J0, or dropped off at the Municipal Office, 300 Main Street in Vanscoy.

Applications must be received by Wednesday March 31st for consideration.

Stories from the Life of a Saskatchewan Veterinarian The following story is an excerpt from the book “Anecdotal Evidence”

arch is here, and with it, calving season.

Every year I hear of some poor soul getting mauled by a cow that had just calved. It pays to remind ourselves of the dangers that lurk when calving cows and the care we must take to expect the unexpected.

My own lesson occurred many years ago when I was a wee tadpole, but has stuck with me ever since.

My father bought twenty ewes one fall when I was around twelve and we quickly befriended the quiet ones and named them according to what was obvious i.e. Baldy, Blacky, Curly, or by their steel tag numbers; #8, #21, etc. #21 was everyone’s favorite and would let you scratch her behind the ear or eat out of your hand. She was always the first to come running over when the bus dropped us off and had the big brown trusting eyes that she used to parlay into extra grain or a long scratch on the itchy spots.

The ewes were all bred that fall and passed an easy winter in the little pen next to the barn, a kind of hobby for us boys against the constant mucking with cattle. Sheep chores were always a breeze as one bale fed almost all the sheep and sheep didn’t drink nearly as much as cattle, a fact which was much appreciated when hauling water by the bucket.

In the early spring, the big bulging bellies of the ewes began to bring forth lambs. As each ewe lambed we would check out the newborns and see what we had. One day after school we were told that #21 had lambed and was in a pen by herself mothering up.

I was the first one to the pen and leaping over the rail fence, jumped into the pen ready to congratulate old #21 and check out her twins. I had no sooner landed on my feet in her pen and looked up when #21, my pet,

my friend, head lowered at me and at full speed, rammed me in the guts. My air went out of my lungs and as I clung incredulously to the rail #21 backed up about ten steps then rammed me again this time in my hip as I turned to avoid her.

Then as I breathlessly attempted to crawl over the rail fence she nailed me with her bony head square in my buttocks jamming me into the rough poplar rails and nearly disemboweling me. I toppled over the fence and stood painfully groaning beside #21’s pen, while inside the ewe stood head high, stamping her feet at me seeming oblivious to any previous relationship we had.

It took about four days before #21 returned to her old self although we were all careful not to get caught between her and her lambs.

After her betrayal we were never able to regain the old feelings we had for her.

It was a valuable lesson to a young fellow and I never forgot to be careful around recently freshened animals regardless of previous good behavior. My only slip up was on the direction of my wife’s obstetrician when, against my better judgment, he placed me directly in a small room with my wife while she was giving birth.

Thankfully, I suffered only verbal abuse whose emotional scars have mostly healed.

Prairie Spirit Cancelling Bus Service to City Schools for Rural Students continued from page 1...

ollowing notification of the decision to cease transportation services, concerned parents and community members reached out to the Prairie Spirit School Division, Saskatoon Public School Division, Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Division, the Ministry of Education, our MLAs, and other designates with concerns and requests to have this decision re-evaluated and overturned.

Decision makers are currently discussing the matter and intend to provide concerned GEMS parents with an update in the coming weeks.

The decision to cancel transportation services for GEMS children has the potential to affect the entire GEMS community, yet only families with children receiving Prairie Spirit School Division transportation during the

2020/2021 school year have been notified of the decision. Families who are currently engaged in virtual learning, chose not to use bus service this year due to the pandemic, or who have preschool-aged children may not be aware that this service has been revoked for future school years. It is our understanding that residents, landowners, and business owners who do not have school aged children using the bus service were not notified.

squith Town Council held its regular council meeting on February 10, 2021. Attending were Mayor Gail Erhart, Councillors, Jackie Stobbe, Cecilia Mryglod, Jeff Eide, Wade Monks-Janzen, Jodi Nehring, and Darcy Stack. Also attending was CAO Kathy Picketts and Foreman Darren Kraft. The meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m.

A resolution was made to accept the council minutes from the January 20, 2021 special council meeting.

Council made a motion to accept the January 2021 financials and January 2021 bank reconciliations as presented to them at the meeting.

Accounts Paid in the amount of $24,096.14 and Accounts Payable of $37,149.51 were accepted as presented.

2021 brings a new year, and of course with a new year comes the necessity to renew licenses.

Pet licenses are now due. All individuals who own a cat or dog in Asquith are required to have a license for their pet. Cost of licenses is $10 for a spayed or neutered cat or dog or $20 for a non-spayed/nonneutered cat or dog. Failure to purchase a license will result in a fine, and you will still be required to purchase a license.

2021 Business Licenses are also now due. For more information, please contact the Asquith Town Office at 306-329-4341.

Did you know…… that if you take out a building permit, the onus is on the property owner to contact the building inspector to make a final inspection and to close the permit. Failure to do so results in your permit being left open and as such could pose a real problem for you should you decide to sell your property. If you are not sure whether your permit was finalized or closed, please feel free to contact the Asquith Town Office.

May 2021 will be a Census of Population.

ouncil held a regular meeting on February 9, 2021. A $1,000.00 donation will be made to the Stars Ambulance service.

The ice plant at the arena will be shut down when Minor Hockey decides to end their season.

Minor Hockey is planning to end their season on March 14th.

Town Council supports the 2021 Federal Census which will take place in May of this year. We encourage all residents to complete their census questionnaire online at www.census.gc.ca. Accurate and complete census data supports programs and services that benefit our community.

Bill C-268: The Protection of Freedom of Conscience Act

Y

esterday in the House of Commons I proudly introduced Bill C-268, The Protection of Freedom of Conscience Act. This bill would protect the rights of medical professionals to not take part in Medical Assistance in Dying, and it protects your right to find a doctor who shares your values.

Freedom of Conscience is one of the first fundamental rights laid out in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and it is at the core of our Canadian identity. This private member’s bill is a response to calls from physicians and patients to ensure conscience rights for medical professionals.

As Parliamentarians, we have heard from thousands of physicians, Canadians with disabilities, First Nations and many others who do not want death to become a first resort. Each of these groups, for their own reasons, has called on Parliament to pass effective conscience protections.

When euthanasia was first legalized in 2015, we were all promised by the government that no one would be coerced to take part in euthanasia against their will.

Without the force of law behind it, this promise has proven to be completely empty.

The government’s plan to expand euthanasia eligibility, as well as the Senate’s amendments to expand assisted death to those with mental health conditions, will leave even more patients and more medical professionals vulnerable to coercion. It is vital that conscience protections are put in now to prevent abuse.

Dr. Ellen Warner, an oncologist practicing in Ontario, shared her experiences in a video discussing this bill.

“I think it will shock Canadians to hear of healthcare providers being coerced into participating in MAID, yet such coercion has been happening frequently,” she said. “A brilliant colleague of mine was bullied into becoming the physician legally responsible for MAID on his hospital ward. It was a great loss to us when he left for a different position.”

She also revealed examples of bullying and even an open call from a colleague for the firing of any doctor with an objection to taking part in euthanasia.

But it is not just medical professionals who suffer when conscience rights are ignored. If all doctors are

forced to propose MAID to their patients, patients would no longer have access to a second opinion for their end-of-life care, and people who object to MAID would be deterred from entering the medical profession altogether. This impersonal one-size-fits-all system would give Canadians less choice, not more.

Heidi Janz is an associate professor of ethics and a disability rights advocate. She was born with multiple severe disabilities and told us how, as a newborn, Heidi’s parents were told to put her into an institution and forget they ever had her. Her mother, following her conscience, refused.

But the ableism present at the time of her birth still exists today: “A couple months ago, I went to ER with severe pneumonia,” she said. “For someone with visible disabilities, the ER can be a harrowing and life-threatening experience. Oxygen masks and resuscitation orders, which are routine for non-disabled people, are not so automatic for us. Instead, some doctors are immediately skeptical that my life is worth living at all.”

She told us of the dehumanizing experience of doctors and nurses being shocked that she would want to keep living with her disabilities, and how conscience rights will help her find doctors she can trust.

“When I was born, my mother’s conscience told her it is good I exist. We need to protect conscience rights so I can find doctors who believe so too.”

Conscience rights are critical to how our healthcare system works. When you receive a diagnosis as a patient, you expect to have the choice to seek out other expert advice.

But if every doctor and medical professional is forced by law to give you the exact same list of options, you no longer have the choice to get a second opinion and our entire healthcare system is weakened.

If we want to protect our Canadian values and our Canadian healthcare system, we must protect conscience.

Delisle is vying for $10,000 to fund Splash Park

elisle is registered for the 2021 Saskatchewan Blue Cross Go Out & Play Challenge. The Challenge offers communities a chance to win $10,000 for a project that gets kids and families out to play. The community that moves the most during the 10-day Challenge wins the grand prize. We want it to be us!

We need everyone to help us win. We’re counting on residents, friends, neighbours and family members to get moving to win this year’s Challenge, March 1-10th, 2021.

Delisle plans to put the grand prize to good use. Donating all of the funds to the development of a Splash Park. It’s easy to participate and log your physical activity online. You do NOT need to live in Delisle to help us win!

Here’s what you need to do: 1. Log on to the Challenge website (challenge.saskatchewaninmotion.ca) and create a personal or family profile.

2. Be physically active. Don’t forget walking, active play and chores like shoveling snow!

3. Log your minutes of physical activity to add to Delisle’s total every day.

Due to Covid regulations, we are unable to organize a WinterFest like we have had for the past couple of years. We will, however, be posting different activity ideas and will be giving out a few small prizes throughout the challenge as well.

Go Out and Play is designed to encourage communities to think about the important role they play when it comes to providing opportunities for outdoor play.

Delisle Community Chapel Renovation

he Delisle Community Chapel is moving ahead with plans to renovate the exterior of the church building located at 417 - 2nd Street East in Delisle, across the street from Delisle Composite School. The renovation will include the removal of existing siding and brickwork, and the replacement of all siding, fascia and soffits, plus new windows and entry doors.

The contract for this exterior work was awarded to a local company, Flatlander Construction of Delisle.

Building materials are now on site, and construction work is expected to be completed in the spring.

In recent years the interior of the chapel has been updated with the creation of a social hall in the basement known as the Gathering Place, and the addition of an elevator to provide ease of access for seniors and others with mobility issues. Pastor Herb Anderson says, “This exterior upgrade will protect and beautify the facility, making it an attractive community worship center for many years to come.”

The Delisle Community Chapel has been active in the Delisle area for well over 100 years, caring for the spiritual needs of the community and offering programs for children, youth, and adults. Morning church services each Sunday at 10:45 are also live streamed on the Delisle Community Chapel Facebook page and may be viewed on YouTube at any time.

The event was held virtually over Microsoft Teams, with our Cloverbud and Intermediate members speaking in the morning, and our Junior and Senior members speaking in the afternoon. February 25, 2021 (Ottawa, ON) – On news that Bill C-206, An Act to Amend the Greenhouse Gas Pollution Pricing Act, passed second reading in the House of Commons, Canada’s grain farmers would like to thank the bill’s sponsor, MP Philip Lawrence, and all MPs who voted in favour of recognizing the importance of exempting onfarm use of propane and natural gas from the carbon tax.

“This bill is desperately needed for Canada’s grain farmers,” said GGC chair Andre Harpe. “With

no alternative fuels available, we are faced with a punitive cost when using a grain dryer to reduce the moisture levels in our grain. Without proper drying when faced with wet conditions and adverse weather, the grain will spoil, and we will not be able to take our product to market.”
