Asquith Plays Hockey for Humboldt
W
hen an Asquith community member heard that April 14-15 was “play hockey for Humboldt Broncos” she put the word out on Facebook for the Town of Asquith to get together to play street hockey in
support. About 80 people of all ages came together that weekend and played some games of street hockey. The Elk’s Hall opened their doors for refreshments, the Co-Op donated bottles of water, and the Asquith Hotel donated pizzas for
everyone! In addition, the Mayor of Asquith provided everyone with donuts and cookies. The banner you see in the picture below was created and donated by ProTouch Engraving & Signage of Saskatoon. The banner was signed
by everyone in attendance and has been on display in the Co-op for additional signatures. It will be sent on to Humboldt upon completion. All in all, a lot of community members helped make this memorable day happen!

I
was born and raised in Saskatoon and did not play organized hockey. We did have outdoor rinks in the backyard, and at the school, where I learned to skate and had lots of fun, but I never did catch the bug for organized hockey. My memories are frozen feet in the shack and how much water can hurt when it is frozen. Hockey... I don’t get it. When we moved out to the Vanscoy area in 2000 I was amazed how many of our neighbors were involved in the local hockey scene. I heard the stories of very early morning trips to practices and standing around in cold arenas, but it didn’t stop them from keeping their kids involved . I still don’t get it ! Then our son was born and I didn’t push him to get involved in hockey, and he didn’t. I always thought that I dodged a bullet... until April 6 and the Bronco’s tragedy.

Hockey Culture has a Global Reach I watched as the wave of support flooded in from around the globe and I tried to understand just why this tragedy, much more than many others, touched so many people. During the following weeks I, like everyone, got to know about the people involved and their communities. Along with the coaches, trainer, and others, I also learnt a lot about the players that were lost and injured. These young men had a bonds that went beyond their current team mates. They were part of so many other people’s lives from playing on different teams, generously supporting their communities with their time and they were all loved by their billet families. Hockey, and dedicated parents, built these boys into world class men. Now I finally get it. To lose so many of them will be a big loss for all of us for some time. This will be a very tough Mother’s Day for many amazing hockey moms. Know that your world wide family is with you.

PIKE LAKE SCHOOL
s we write this newsy item, it appears that spring has finally sprung for once and for all! With the fast departure of the last snow and with temperatures rising into double digits we are even more excited to be out and about with our learning! During the last full week of April, our school cared for our home earth in a variety of ways. Two of the main activities we participated in were: a.) actively taking part in a recycling plastic bag challenge and b.) pitching in to gather all the garbage and debris from around our school that was left visible once the snow retreated. The week was a huge success in learning and caring for our environment. We are happy to announce that our school is once again taking part in the David Suzuki 30 x 30 Nature Challenge during the month of May. Students and families will be logging at least 30 minutes each day outside in nature for 30 days. Over the past years with our annual involvement, there has been a steady increase in those participating and logging their times exploring the outdoors. Of course as we know, connecting with nature signifies a positive impact on being a healthier well being individual! Why don’t you join us in this movement? It’s free, it’s inspiring, it’s motivating and most importantly it is FUN! You can register your involvement @ https://davidsuzuki.org/take-action/act-locally/one-nature-challenge/ You won’t regret it! We are well underway in our “One Book, One School” endeavor of reading “Adventure According to Humphrey” by Betty G. Birney. The students have been reading with their parents/guardians and excitedly answering the chapter questions along the way. We are sure this venture has been successful in encouraging some quality reading time together as a family! A final celebration will take place in mid May when we culminate our reading adventure. Our school has become “up to date” with social media and now have a school Twitter account. To follow us or check us out find us at: @PikeLakeSchool. Don’t forget to visit our blog page to that has wonderful tidbits of valuable information for you to resource. E.g. monthly calendars and newsletters, My Prairie Spirit Classroom, special links, school goals, etc. You can find our blog by visiting: http://blogs.spiritsd.ca/pikelakeschool/ Check it out and discover all the important information about your school in your community.

Delisle Playschool New Outdoor Play Area
n the fall of 2017, the Delisle Playschool was excited to present their new outdoor area to the children for the 2017/2018 school year! At the time, it consisted of a shed and a two sided fence, as a means of an outdoor play area for the children. This project was sponsored by the Delisle CO-OP, Crop Production Services, CanAm, Molly’s Munchkins Dayhome, Flatlander Construction and Noble Contracting. We are proud to announce that we were able to continue with the growth of this project through sponsorship provided from Agrium, HUB Insurance and a grant from the Community Initiatives Fund. Simply Grounded Coffee Gallery in Delisle, also generously donated a portion of sales from their Italian soda purchases during March towards our outdoor play area. All sponsors from our project will be presented on a plaque to be displayed on the exterior of our shed. With this additional sponsorship Miss Janelle, our playschool
Teacher, has purchased a sand and water table to support outdoor learning and sensory play. A gardening theme, has led to the purchase of gardening tools, gloves, watering cans, pails, planters and a variety of vegetable seeds. Insects will also be explored through the use of exploration science toys including bug nets, microscopes, magnifying glasses and various discovery toys. And of course an outdoor theme can’t be complete without a child sized tent and lanterns for stories and discovering. The Delisle playschool Graduation for our four year old students will be take place at 2:30 on Sunday, June 24, 2018. As a result of the graduation of students and parents moving onto elementary school, new board positions will be opening for the upcoming year. If you are interested in becoming involved with the Delisle Playschool please plan to attend the Annual General Meeting on Thursday, June 21, 2018 at 7:30, following the prereg-
istration of preschoolers which will be from 6:30-7:30 located in the lodge room of the Delisle Town Hall. If you would like more information regarding the Delisle playschool please feel free to contact our current president, Kaila King, at kailaking@hotmail.com. PIKE LAKE PRESCHOOL
A
pril has been an interesting month, weatherwise anyways. Snow, no snow, warm weather, cold weather. The preschoolers took advantage of the nice weather whenever we could, playing outside on the playground. Unfortunately, due to bad weather, we had to cancel a field trip, but we're hoping to reschedule it. The 3-year olds learned about the season of spring on their first day back after the Easter break. Fortunately it was a nicer day so they could understand when we talked about snow melting and the weather becoming warmer. For number 8 day, they made an octopus, and for blue day at the end of the month, they will make a peacock. The 4-year olds finished up the unit on safety, learning about fire safety. As mentioned, the trip to the fire hall was cancelled but we'll try again in May. Instead, we tried hard to get spring to come and stay by making butterflies. Our plan seems to have worked because the weather turned around again after Tuesday! Our classroom is now decorated for spring with different flower crafts on the walls and butterflies hanging from the ceiling. This week, we'll make some paper bag kites, and the kids will learn the poem Little Boy Blue for blue day. In May, the 4-year olds will start the 5 Senses unit, we'll explore the number 9 and the colour purple, we'll celebrate moms, and start practicing graduation songs. I haven't quite figured out grad dates yet, but I'm thinking June 15th or 22nd for the 3-year olds and June 19th or 22nd for the 4-year olds. That brings us to next year! Registration for next year will be Thursday, May 24th from 7-8pm, upstairs at Pike Lake Community Hall. Children must be 3 or 4 by December 31st, 2018, and toilet trained. Please call Wendy at 306-978-8164 for more information. We will be having a mandatory meeting for all registered families sometime in late August. 3-year old days: May 4, 11, 25 4-year old days: May 1, 4, 8, 11, 15, 22, 25, 29 Colour: purple Number: 9 REGISTRATION FOR NEXT YEAR IS THURSDAY, MAY 24TH FROM 7-8PM

Securely Dispose of Personal Documents
T
he Big Shred will take place in the parking lot of McClure United Church at 4025 Taylor St. (at Heritage Way) in Saskatoon on Saturday, May 5 from 9 am to 12 noon! This is your chance to quickly shred old bank and utility statements, tax files (2011 and earlier), bills, files, and outdated documents which may contain personal information. Shredding private, personal or confidential papers helps to prevent personal identity theft. The last thing you want is someone removing your information from recycle or garbage bins. We ap-
preciate the partnership of the Shred-it company staff and trucks in this project. This is the 5th annual Big Shred. Other years, proceeds helped pay down the mortgage at Amy McClure House, a personal care home for up to 23 residents, and the mortgage was paid off this February! Proceeds of the Big Shred this year will go to towards purchase of a therapeutic tub for residents! This is a fundraiser and $10 per box, or $5 per shopping bag is suggested. Declutter your space and help a good cause at the same time!
Illegal Border Crossings
t is estimated that over 400 people a day are illegally crossing the border into Canada, flooding our refugee system and making it difficult for those in dire need to come to our country. The problem began after Trudeau sent out a tweet with the phrase “welcome to Canada”, referencing individuals who had already illegally crossed the border. The Conservative Caucus introduced a motion calling on the Government to secure the border and come up with a plan, rather than simply spend more of your tax dollars on the growing problem. The Honourable Michelle Rempel, Shadow Minister for Immigration, and Pierre Paul-Hus, Shadow Minister for Public Safety, issued the following statement calling on Justin Trudeau to take immediate action to manage Canada’s borders and immigration system: “Canadians expect our immigration system to operate in an orderly, planned, and safe manner. “Despite repeated calls from Andrew Scheer’s Conservatives to come up with a plan, Justin Trudeau has failed to take the appropriate action to manage illegal border crossings in Canada since his irresponsible tweet last year. “It is projected that upwards of 400 people per day will illegally cross into Quebec this summer and instead of looking at real solutions like closing the loophole in the Safe Third Country Agreement, or designating the

entire Canadian border as an official point of entry, the Trudeau government has spent millions of taxpayer dollars on band-aid solutions. If Justin Trudeau had a plan to address the illegal border crossers, that money could have been put into health care or veterans services. “It is unacceptable to millions of Canadians who came here legally and played by the rules, that the Prime Minister would encourage individuals to illegally enter our country. It’s also unfair to those families who are sponsoring loved ones through the family reunification program that their family members need to wait longer to come to Canada because Justin Trudeau is prioritizing illegal border crossers.

or both commercial and purebred herds, yearling bulls and their proper care represent a significant investment in the future of the cowherd. These bulls represent the genetics that will impact productivity long after their breeding days have passed. In order to maximize this investment, yearling bulls require special attention. Bulls of this age are typically gaining between three and four pounds a day up until sale time. While it is not necessary to maintain this once he arrives at your ranch it is important to keep him growing. Bulls should be slowly backed off until they are gaining two or two and half pounds a day until breeding season begins. Bulls that are allowed to lose weight between sale time and breeding may not have enough reserves to successfully make it through their first breeding season. Exercise is also important at this time as your bull likely was raised in a drylot situation. A small grass paddock or larger pen will allow him to get conditioned for the upcoming breeding season.
Yearling Bull Management
It is also important to know the vaccination history of the bull you just purchased. If he hasn’t been vaccinated, he should be as soon as possible after coming to your ranch. The newly purchased bull should be vaccinated against IBR, BVD, PI3, leptospirosis, and vibriosis. It is also a good idea to immunize him with a 7-way clostridial bacterin. A foot rot vaccine may also be administered at this time. The post-breeding care provided to yearling bulls is critical if they are to remain productive in future years. It is important to assess physical condition following breeding season. In order for a yearling bull to be ready to breed by next summer, he should be fed to achieve a weight in the 65 to 75 percent range of his expected mature size, and this by the beginning of the next breeding season. This will help assure that he will be a strong aggressive breeder. As an example, a bull expected to mature at a weight of 2200 pounds will need to weigh approximately 1650 pounds prior to the next breeding season. This means that if a bull comes out of a
pasture weighing 1100 pounds, he will need to gain 550 pounds over the course of the fall and winter season in order to be ready for breeding season. It is therefore important to put together a balanced ration with proper minerals and vitamins that will enable the bull to achieve the proper weight. Regional Livestock Specialists are available to assist you with developing these rations. Proper care and management of yearling bulls is essential if reproductive performance and genetic improvement of the cowherd is to be maximized. Furthermore, proper care of yearling bulls will increase the likelihood of these animals being successful breeders for years to come. Successful bull management gets cows bred early in the breeding season, optimizes weaning weights, and increases profits. Canadian Project To Study The Health Outcomes Of Grains-Based Foods CALGARY (April 23, 2018) – A new research project at the University of Saskatchewan aims to enhance the information available on the Canadian consumption of foods made from both whole and enriched non-whole grains. Both whole grain and enriched nonwhole grain foods are important parts of a balanced diet for Canadians. While whole grain foods have been studied significantly, and the nutritional benefits of including them in one’s diet are well known, there is less information on the consumption of enriched non-whole grain foods like white bread, bagels and hamburger/hot dog buns, and the nutrition and health benefits of consuming these foods. Led by Hassan Vatanparast of the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Pharmacy and Nutrition and School of Public Health, the project utilizes the recently released 2015 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS) data to provide better guidance to Canadians and policy makers on the contribution of both whole and enriched non-whole grains to the diet. The project is being funded jointly by the Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission (Sask Wheat), the Alberta Wheat Commission (AWC), the Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO), and Mitacs, a Canadian not-forprofit funding agency supporting industry-academia collaborations. “We want to ensure that consumers and policy makers have the best information available to them,” said Sask Wheat Chair Laura Reiter, who farms near Radisson, Saskatchewan. “Evidence from other countries has shown that foods made from both whole grain and enriched non-whole grains provide nutritional and health benefits to those who included these foods in their diets. We need this research done here to help Canadians make informed decisions that will benefit their health and well-being.”
Canada’s Food Guide is currently being revised and Health Canada is proposing Canadians increase their dietary intake of whole grain foods and decrease their intake of foods made with enriched nonwhole grains. However, studies using data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey have recently shown the inclusion of enriched non-whole grain foods contribute to nutrient intakes and diet quality in children and adults. The results of Vatanparast’s project are expected to benefit consumers and policy makers with better health and nutrition information on the consumption of all grainsbased foods while also providing benefits to the Canadian farmers who produce the grain. “We believe Canadians should have accessible, science-based information when it comes to how we choose to nourish ourselves and our families,” said Kevin Bender, AWC board chair. “Investment in Dr. Vatanparast’s work will provide information on the health benefits of all grain-based foods to help inform these decisions.” “Ontario farmers grow high quality nutritious wheat that goes into a number of refined, enriched grain-based foods. This project, and the information generated from it, will allow Canadian consumers to continue to make well-informed, science-based decisions on their food choices,” said Markus Haerle, Chairman, Grain Farmers of Ontario. “This is an opportunity for us to investigate Canadians’ consumption of grain products, the key nutrients these grains contribute to the diet, and the potential association of grain products consumption to health outcomes,” said Vatanparast. The results of the project will be available from mid-2018 into 2020.

PST ON USED VEHICLES
T
he recent provincial budget has resulted in all used vehicles being taxable for PST effective April 11, 2018. This change applies to all vehicles sold whether at a dealership or privately, new or used, light or heavy are now taxed at 6% regardless of the date on the bill of sale. SGI administers the collection of tax on behalf of the government, for more information you can also phone the Ministry of Finance 1-800-667-6102. Following the recent budget rules, used vehicles purchased privately in Canada for personal or farm use only with a purchase price of $5,000 or less are now exempt from 6% PST. This $5,000 tax exemption applies to private sales only for cars, SUVs, light vans, light trucks 1 ton or less, motorhomes and buses, campers, leisure vehicles such as ATVs or boats, motorcycles and snowmobiles. Private or farm use utility or transport trailers are also exempt under $5,000. In essence, the former $3,000 PST deduction has been replaced with a $5,000 PST exemption for personal or farm used private purchases only. For example, if you purchase a used car today for $9,000 then 6% PST will apply to the entire $9,000 (not only on the $4,000 above the $5k base exemption) or the Red Book value (whichever is greater). Red Book value is an industry valuation tool that is used to determine wholesale value of vehicles. If there is no Red Book value available for your vehicle then determination of tax will be based on purchase price as indicated on your bill of sale. The trade-in allowance has been reinstated, whether purchased new or used for light personal and
farm vehicles. This means PST will be calculated less the trade-in value. For example, if you bought a vehicle for $10,000, and traded in another previously PST paid vehicle for $4,000, the PST will be calculated on the difference of $6,000. The trade-in allowance is not taken into consideration when determining if the $5,000 exemption applies. It is the full purchase price or the Red Book value whichever is greater. These rules allow an exemption for the gifting of used vehicles between qualifying family members (provided tax has been previously paid). Qualifying family members are defined as spouse and common-law spouse, parent and step-parent, child and step-child, grandparent and step-grandparent, grandchildren and step-grandchildren, brothers, sisters, step-brothers and step-sisters, legal guardian, foster-parent, fatherin-law and mother-in-law and son or daughter-in-law. ’m writing to raise awareness about brain tumours in our community. My name is Heather Poirier and I’m the volunteer walk co-ordinator for our Saskatoon Brain Tumour Walk. I’m also a survivor of a childhood brain tumour. Due to the symptoms reflecting other illnesses as well as the lack of awareness around pediatric brain tumours, it took a while before I was diagnosed and by that time I would have had a month to live if it had not been discovered. I was one of the lucky ones. 20 years later, I live a healthy life with my family outside of Asquith and can work with others in furthering our research and support for the brain tumour community. We are not alone. May is Brain Tumour Awareness month and during this month alone, 837 Canadians will hear the words “you have a brain tumour”.
And they will add their voice to the 55,000 survivors across this country desperate for an increase in awareness of this little-known disease. But even more importantly, every one of these people need understanding of the extreme impact of a brain tumour. They are silent and sneaky thieves stealing personalities, livelihoods, abilities, and ultimately, far too often, lives. I urge all readers to become aware of the symptoms of brain tumours and support their family/friends affected by the disease. We are also actively looking for volunteers in Saskatchewan for fundraising and our annual walk in Saskatoon. Sincerely, Heather Poirier Survivor of a non-malignant brain tumour since 1998

e have to believe that 2018's spring is here. We certainly had some 'lionish' weather for more than the first half of April, but this past week+ has brought the long awaited warm period. With it's arrival, our snow dissipating at a record pace. Finally!
The PLCSA has had only one event thus far in April, but what a fabulous event it was. Four of Pike Lake Communities' hard working ladies, - Angela Bothner, Kim Puckett, Elyse Henderson and Netta Foster, took on the formidable task of putting on PLCSA's 2018 Ladies Night. What a fantastic job they did, not only putting on the event but ultimately rejuvenating it. The 2018 Crystal & Dine was a huge success as more over 170 ladies attended the revamped ladies night, all leaving very happy with the evenings proceedings. We look forward to next year's event. We do have one more event yet in April. PLCSA hosts another Texas Hold'Em tournament on Saturday, April 28th, starting at 7 p.m. We are looking forward to it being a successful event, especially with the positive weather change. Approaching the end of April we expect to soon see our farmers out in the fields putting in this year's crop and doing their other spring work. We hope they have a very successful year. Also, at this time of year the PLCSA soccer program gets under way. Monday, April 30th will be the "kickoff" to the 2018 seven week program. The League is scheduled to start May 7th. Again, we host the league tournament, this year on June 2nd. The soccer games and tournament have proven to be a great activity for both the youth and others of our community. It appears likely that we will have a significant increase in player numbers this year, especially in the younger age groups, which speaks well for Pike Lake's future soccer. Hopefully you will look to get involved in some capacity, and/or come out Mondays and Wednesdays to support Pike lake's youth

Finally PLCSA hosts another Community Potluck on Friday, May 11th, starting at 6 p.m. The PLCSA Board still has one key board position open at this point of time, and that is the *treasurer position*. If you are, or you know of anyone that might be interested, please relay the information to me. FYI, please note the PLCSA have changed their monthly meeting time. We now meet on the 2nd Tuesday of each month (except July). Bill Thon, PLCSA Chairperson
Editors Note I learned, with great sadness, that after writing this report, Bill Thon passed away. He was very active in the Pike Lake community and will be greatly missed.
