Delisle Crops for Community takes off their Fourth Annual Harvest

O

n Thursday, September 15th, the equipment and volunteers hit the field one more time to take off the Delisle Crops for Community harvest. The 200-acre parcel of land on the eastern edge of Delisle has been used to generate funds for community recreational infrastructure projects over the last four years. It has been made possible thanks to a partnership between Delisle residents, area farmers, local businesses and Agrium Vanscoy Potash Operations (VPO). The initiative, known as Delisle Crops for Community (DCFC), is an innovative way of raising much-needed money for improvements to the community. A committee made up of seven volunteers has been responsible for the management and production decisions

regarding the land and are a huge part of the project’s success over the last 4 years. In that time, DCFC has raised nearly $300k for the community of Delisle. Shawn Colborn, the president of DCFC, said in an interview last week “It’s something that was talked about for a number of years. We decided since the land was available, we should put our words into action.” Colborn said the town purchased the 200-acre parcel of land on the eastern edge of Delisle about 5 years ago as part of its longterm future growth plan. Noting that it could take many years for residential and commercial sites to actually get started, he said it made economic sense in the meantime to continue to farm

the land until conditions are right for development. “The town gave this committee permission to farm it with the understanding that all profits will be donated back to the town for infrastructure and recreation,” Colborn explained. “It’s a way of putting the land to good use as a revenue generator.” “It’s a great project,” said Chad Wawryk, an employee at Agrium VPO and an advocate for the initiative. “This initiative has fit nicely with the culture at VPO. It has been a project that stresses the company’s commitment to building healthy partnerships with our stakeholders, actively supporting the communities in which Agrium does business and setting standards

for environmental commitment. It also describes our dedication to the growth of our employees and achieving common goals with our customers and suppliers.” The project has also been a great learning tool for the local schools in the area, providing students with a chance to visit the growing site to gain knowledge and hands-on experience. A couple of DCFC committee members even visited the local schools and educated the kids on the fundamentals of agriculture and the benefits of chemistry and fertilizers in crop production. The benefits of the project have been amazing for the community of Delisle. “It’s a very valuable initiative,” concluded Colborn. “It helps the community, and we’re proud to be able to contribute.”

Delisle Harvest Festival 2016

T

he Delisle Harvest Festival took place on September 8th in Delisle, running from 2pm - 8pm. After two previous annual events, the Delisle Women in Business (WIB) group joined forces with the two Delisle School Community Councils (SCC) and moved the event from downtown to the school grounds. A brief power outage in the early afternoon cast a shadow on the event, but it was quickly rectified and the show went on. The WIB Marketplace was fun for the whole family with kids bouncy castles and food truck vendors, plus live music from “One Eyed Cat”. The variety of WIB members booths provided a unique local

shopping experience. The two school SCC hosted community open houses the same day for people to see what is happening in the schools this year and to meet the staff. Additionally the Elementary SCC hosted a Registration Night with representatives from local organizations who explained the activities they provide and people were able to registered in them. The Composite SCC hosted a Free Community Hotdog BBQ, thanks to donations from Delisle Co-op (hotdog buns), Robin’s Nest Cafe (condiments plus Quinten did the cooking) as well as Maple Leaf foods that provided the wieners.

Community Players Celebrate 20 Years

he Community Players have been in existence since 1996, formed by a group of interested individuals. Materials were gathered to make the backdrop and set, a play was chosen and practiced followed by two public performances. In the years since that beginning plays have been presented in Delisle and Pike Lake, although the past few years Delisle has hosted the performances. Comedy has been the choice of play since the beginning. Believing that people enjoy an evening out with friends and neighbors, dinner and live entertainment was an added bonus. The mandate of the group was to have fun and provide entertainment for the public, not to make a lot of money. The event has been popular over the years and as a result extra funds have been donated to local organizations such as the Delisle Fire Department, the Wheatland Library, the Arts Council, Donovan and Laura halls, the Delisle Centennial Arena and others. To celebrate 20 years the Community Players proudly presents “The Seniors of the Sahara” by Barbara Pease Weber on November 4,5 and 6, 2016. Sylvia Goldberg, a respectable retired New

Jersey school teacher, brings home more than just souvenirs upon returning from her grandson's wedding in Israel. Sylvie's troubles begin when she realizes that the old teapot she purchased at an outdoor market actually contains a geriatric genie “Eugene” who has a bad back and finds he likes vodka and V8. Keeping her se-

cret from her three friends and Eugene's former master proves to be quite concerning and dangerous. Be careful what you wish for Sylvie Goldberg! Dinner Theater is Friday and Saturday night and Dessert Theater is Sunday afternoon. All performances are at the Delisle Town Hall. Join us and share the fun!

Asquith Town Council moved to have the subdivision of the landfill subdivided in order to possibly sell the portion of property not currently used for the Asquith Landfill site. Kevin Watts has been contracted to repair some cemetery monuments at the Asquith Cemetery that have fallen off of their base; to the Town's knowledge there are no living relatives of these individuals who could take care of this themselves. The Town of Asquith will be sponsoring the Saskatchewan Federation of Police Officers 2016 Crime Prevention Guide by purchasing a business card sized advertisement for one hundred and seventy-five dollars. Council approved a house to be moved into town, should the individual be successful in purchasing the house and the lot. Council contracted Ditmars Contracting to repair the roof and to shingle the museum garage for a cost of $2,762.00, plus the cost for any sheeting that has to be replaced. Wednesday, October 21, 2016 was nomination day, and the Town office received one nomination for Mayor and six nomination forms for Councillors, thus there will be no need for an election this year; the nominated individuals will receive their office by acclamation. The following will be the new council following the November 9, 2016 regular council meeting: Mayor - Gail Erhart Councillors - Dylan Claypool, Jordan Claypool, Harold Edwards, Ted Goodnough, Jerome Rogan and Sue Sawicki. The Asquith Fire Department and the Asquith First Responders held a Pig Roast/Street Dance/Show and Shine on September 10, 2016. The event was successful, even if the weather did not want to particularly cooperate! There have been reports of vehicles being broken into and some vehicles being stolen over the last few weeks in Asquith. It is very important to lock your vehicles and your houses, and to also not leave anything of value in your vehicle, especially in plain sight. Also, everyone is asked to be vigilant; please take note of strange vehicles driving around town, or unknown individuals walking about. Please report concerns to the RCMP, who are actively trying to put a stop to rural crime. Working together, we can make a difference! This office hopes that all are enjoying a fruitful harvest and lovely autumn.

We now have seven 3-year olds, with another one starting in January, and four 4-year olds with possibly 2 more starting in January. The students have settled in quite well - no tears at all! On our first day, we looked in a mirror to see what we look like so we could colour pictures of our faces and bodies to hang on the wall. We also had our Number 1 Day where the 3year olds made a "Number 1 Book" and the 4-year olds practiced drawing ones and gluing on small cut out ones. Fortunately the weather has been great so we have spent a lot of time playing outdoors. The students love the swings and playing with the toys we borrow from Pike Lake School. The 4-year olds have started an All About Me theme, starting with the pictures of themselves we hung on the walls. We talked about who's in our families and what our families like to do together. Last week we had one of my favourite days...names! The students coloured block letters of their names (these are also hung on the walls) and they traced over their names to get a feel for how the letters are formed. From this point on, the 4-year olds are in charge of printing their own names on their crafts! As I write this, there are still a couple of weeks left in September. We will explore the fall season, and celebrate the colour yellow together. The 4-year olds will practice learning their phone numbers and make playdough.

elisle Composite School will be hosting the Provincial Cross Country Meet on Saturday, October 15, 2016. Students ranging from Grade 9 to Grade 12 will be here to compete in the provincial championship. Races will start and finish at the high school with the majority of the course on the Delisle Golf Course. Cross Country Running is a sport that has athletes running distance, just not

always on flat streets or surfaces. Most of the running is done on uneven or hilly surfaces to push an athlete’s endurance and strength, both mental and physical. While it is challenging it is also rewarding as athletes can continue to challenge themselves to achieve their personal best over a set distance even though every course is different. We are hoping to have local athletes competing in the meet and I asked

&.,%(-

them what they thought about cross country and hosting provincials: Josh said “It’s great that Delisle will be hosting provincials this year because more of our friends and families will able to show up and support us. I look forward to cross country because it makes me a better athlete because it is not just for people specializing in running, but for athletes including hockey, basketball, football, and volleyball players that want to increase their stamina” Megan and Kyla said “Provincial Cross Country brings a lot of people to Delisle and gets the community involved in school sports. We get the chance

to meet and compete with people of like interests and promote healthy living and good conditioning for other sports”. The school is asking for community volunteers to support us on October 15 to make this meet possible. Athletes begin arriving at around 9:00 am and we need volunteers to be at registration tables, to assist with parking, marshals on the course and working at the finish line during the day. If you are able to volunteer during the day, even if only for a small time, please call Kirk Schlosser at Delisle Composite School at 306-493-2433. Thank You!

MP REPORT

Kelly Block, MP

s Saskatchewan is in the midst of harvest, I wanted to provide you with an update on some of my work in Parliament that is very topical. As some of you may be aware, three years ago, the Government of Canada introduced Bill C-30, the Fair Rail for Grain Farmers Act. This act increased the interswitching limit from 30km to 160km, mandated that CP and CN each move 500,000 tonnes of grain each week during harvest, set a new definition for “operational terms” in service-level agreements, and gave the Canada Transportation Agency the power to order a railway to compensate any person for expenses caused

These components of the legislation are due to sunset on August 31st 2017, so the Transport, Infrastructure and Communities Committee is holding meetings to determine whether they should be renewed or amended in any other way. To date, the committee has heard from the Canada Transportation Agency, the Canadian Federation of Agriculture, Cereals Canada, and the Grain Growers of Canada and two of the authors of the most recent Canada Transportation Act Review, the Honourable David Emerson and Mr. Murad Al-Katib.

But there are many issues to worry about. First off, the high yields mean downward pressure on prices, along with the difficulties of transporting the big crop to market. But there is the bright light of China opening its canola market. Unfortunately our lentil harvest has turned some poor grades.

The issue of whether to maintain the extended interswitching rates has received the most attention to date from stakeholders, either ambivalent to supportive as to whether the increased 160km limit is achieving its intended objective of increasing competition between the railways.

The committee is also considering how to ensure that the regulated interswitching rates are fair to producers, shippers, as well as the railways, and that impediments to interswitching are minimized. As always, I look forward to your comments on this or any other matter.

n many ways 2016 was a great crop year. The predicted drought was reversed with adequate, and sometimes too much rain; with hail and tornadoes to boot. Some crop yields are off the map along with some loss of quality from untimely rains. All in all a successful crop year.

Another issue is on the horizon with the melding of Sask. Potash with Agrium which has created a world leading producer of potash, nitrogen and fertilizers. That could lead to higher prices for fertilizer and agricultural products. On top of that is the take-over of Bayer by Monsanto which hits at the heart of modern field management practices. Land prices have slowed a little, but today’s farmers have been too far removed from the “dirty thirties” to put the higher land prices into their plans of expansion. There will be bad crop years, unfortunately. Opinions expressed here are exclusively those of the author.

razing as late into the fall as possible is a great way to cut down on winter feed costs for cattle producers. Every day that the grazing season is extended, is one less day of providing feed for your cow herd. Although extending the grazing season is a great way to reduce feed costs it does come with some risks and management challenges. Bloat is a common concern at this time of year if producers are grazing regrowth on alfalfa fields. After a frost the cell walls in the alfalfa plant rupture and increase the release of soluble protein in the plant increasing the chances of bloat in cattle. If a frost occurs when cattle are grazing alfalfa, cattle should be pulled immediately. Producers need to wait a minimum of seven days or longer after a frost or freeze before putting cattle back on the field. This should allow the plant to start drying down reducing the risk of bloat. Likewise, if it was not a complete killing freeze and just a light frost, each subsequent frost or freeze needs to be monitored for additional plant damage. Grazing stubble fields is another way to extend the grazing season. This allows cattle to make use of grass in sloughs, along fence lines and other areas that were not cropped as well as straw and chaff. Caution must be exercised when grazing fields with crop regrowth. Lush regrowth of volunteer cereals pose a risk of nitrates after a

Fall Grazing Reminders

frost. Nitrates are a form of nitrogen easily absorbed by the plant from the soil. Once absorbed it is transferred through the stem to the leaves where it is converted into amino acids and proteins. The plant needs these compounds for growth and seed production. When a frost occurs, the leaf tissue is injured and can no longer convert the nitrates to protein. This results in an accumulation of nitrates to levels that are potentially toxic to livestock. A rest period of seven to 14 days is recommended along with forage testing. Potentially hazardous nitrate levels in the plant decrease if there is leaf tissue alive to utilize the nitrates. It is difficult to know for certain when nitrates are no longer a risk to grazing livestock. For this reason it is advisable to test forages that are thought to be a nitrate risk. Prussic acid is another grazing concern after a frost, though it affects fewer plant varieties than nitrate toxicity. Prussic acid is also known as hydrogen cyanide and is reported to be potentially lethal at levels greater that 500 parts per million (ppm). Prussic acid is formed within a damaged plant when certain naturally occurring plant compounds are degraded. Prussic acid toxicity occurs most commonly in sorghum and related plant varieties, white clover, vetches, as well as in brassica plant species (i.e. mustard and canola). Prussic acid toxicity is worse with younger plants. Animals should be

taken out of potentially harmful pastures after a frost for a period ranging between three to 10 days depending on the plant type, maturity and severity of the frost. Cattle grazing canola regrowth may be ingesting large amounts of sulphur which can cause issues. Excess sulphur will have negative effects on herd performance including sulphur toxicity and polioencephalomalacia (PEM) or polio. PEM can cause cattle to experience blindness, lethargy, seizures and possibly death. Last year cases of polio were reported from cattle grazing canola regrowth. It is also important to remember that cattle grazing stubble fields may require additional feed supplementation. Once cattle have con-

sumed grass from sloughs and waste areas the nutritional value of the straw and chaff being consumed will not be enough to meet the daily feed requirements. Additional protein and energy will need to be supplemented. Minerals and vitamins must not be overlooked during the fall grazing period. This is a good time to make sure calves have good mineral status which will help them stay healthy during weaning. Monitoring your herd closely during this time will ensure that you avoid any problems. ew optional "Water Protection Coverage" available October 1, 2016, with 90% of current SGI CANADA customers being eligible! Water damage is now the number one insurance risk in Canada, with weather changes in recent years resulting in more homes at risk for flooding due to heavy rain, spring run-off or overflow of lakes and rivers. Water Protection Coverage is now SGI CANADA’s most comprehensive level of coverage for water-related events: • Surface water – water on the surface of the ground such as heavy rainfall or rapid snow melt, where it doesn’t usually build up under ordinary circumstances • Flood – the rising of, breaking out or overflow of any body of water, or watercourse, whether natural or man-made • Ground water – water in the soil beneath the surface of the ground; coverage will be provided only when sudden and accidental and tied to a flood or surface water event • Sewer Back Up – water or sewage backs up, escapes or overflows from the sewer line, sump or septic tank Water Protection Coverage is available on eligible Prestige, Home Pak

and dwellings under Agro Pak with various deductible and protection limits. It is not currently available for Tenant or Condo Pak along with rented or seasonal dwellings and Mobile homes. At this time, farm use buildings or barns are also not eligible. Coverage is based on risk zones, with low, medium and high risk zones mapped out based on expected losses in those areas. While coverage is not available to customers located in a high risk zone, they remain eligible for Sewer Back Up coverage. Keep in mind a heavy rainfall can happen in urban, rural or higher elevation areas that quickly creates a flood, regardless of your zone! Note Water Protection Coverage excludes continuous and repeated seepage and leakage as these are considered a home maintenance issue. It also does not cover damage caused by flood, surface or ground water to sidewalks, driveways, basement walls or foundations along with trees, shrubs, plants, lawns or other landscaping. SGI CANADA has also changed Sewer Back Up Coverage. If any other water (surface water, flood or ground water) comes into your home at the SAME TIME as your

back up, escape or overflow then your loss would NOT be covered under only Sewer Back Up Coverage. You need Water Protection Coverage to provide insurance when these events happen at the same time! o celebrate Canada’s 150 year anniversary internationally recognized artist Lewis Lavoie and his Mural Mosaic team based out of Sturgeon County, Alberta are launching a bold undertaking. Over a twoyear span, the goal is to create a mural involving all provinces and territories, which will include over 80,000 paintings and 150 individual murals, that when united will form one gigantic mural mosaic. The mural, if ever connected would be over 365 meters wide (4 football fields) x 2.5 meters high (8 feet). Communities across Canada, beginning in May 2015, will create individ-

from now, may inspire another generation, who will in turn be able to celebrate through the mural, and maybe take it upon themselves to add to this memory.

Delisle is one of 150 Communities Unveiling on October 20th at 2:00pm ual murals depicting the community through the eyes and creative spirit of the individuals within that particular region. Each individual mural will represent a train car, which inevitably will join the other murals to form a gigantic train- the foundation of the unifcation of Canada.

The murals will remain in the community that created the mural as an historical legacy to commemorate the sesquicentennial anniversary. The over-all mural will represent a cultural mosaic, a time capsule, a visual portrayal of history, an art masterpiece from the soul of the nation. An art piece that fifty years

Delisle is one of 8 communities in Saskatchewan to produce a mural and it is being hosted by the Delisle Elementary School. Students and select invited members of the community will be creating 400 tiles between October 17 - 19 and the finished mural will be unveiled to the public on October 20th at 2:00pm at the school. Everyone is invited to the unveiling.
