1st Annual Emergency Responders Fun Day
T
he Delisle and District Volunteer Fire Department held our "1st Annual Emergency Responders Fun Day" on Saturday September 11, and by all accounts the day was a great success. The day started off with a Fun Run where participants could choose to do either 1, 2 or 5 kilometre walk/runs. We had a very special guest in attendance for our Fun Run, her name is Bennett Lenz. (photos at right) Two years ago Bennett was critically injured in a car accident near Vanscoy. Bennett has worked hard on her rehabilitation and has made great strides during the course of her recovery. Bennett and her family have also become tireless supporters of our fire department and, as if her presence there that day wasn't inspiring enough, her family also came with a generous cash donation for our department.
The day continued with displays of our firefighting tools, equipment, and protective gear, as well as demonstrations of how firefighters would go about searching a burning structure for people trapped inside. We also ran a BBQ throughout the day and there were homemade fresh donuts by the Parker family, who kindly donated the profits from their sales back to the fire department. We were also fortunate to have a public education trailer on hand that teaches kids what to do if they should ever experience a fire in their home.
Our choice of the September 11 date for our event is also of great significance. As many readers may remember it was 20 years ago, on September 11, 2001, that terrorists attacked the United Sates by hijacking planes and flying them into the World Trade Center buildings in New York City. On that day 415 of our fellow first responders (fire, police, EMS) died in the line of duty. At 11 a.m. we sounded the sirens on our emergency vehicles and then held one minute of silence in recognition of the sacrifices made by those brave emergency responders.
Bennett Lenz We also had bouncy castles and a number of games for the kids to take part in, all under the watchful eyes of volunteers from the Delisle Rebels Football Team, including their head coach Ty Pylypow.
"We were absolutely thrilled with the turnout for our 1st Annual Emergency Responders Fun Day," said Paul Yanko, a member of the Delisle and District Volunteer Fire Department and one of the event's organizers. "Everyone seemed to have a great time and we'll be meeting soon to discuss our second annual event."
Future Emergency Responders
"We're extremely grateful to our many local sponsors who supported us in this event, and of course to the people of Delisle and the surrounding area who came out and took part," said Yanko. "It's so nice to meet the people of the community we serve under much better circumstances than we would normally meet them under."

2-step Vaccination
A
fter taking the summer off from our fight against the pandemic we now see our health care system getting crushed by a surge in COVID-19 infections. These unnecessary hospitalizations and deaths are overwhelmingly the unvaccinated of which, unfortunately, many are now 12 years old and under as they have no access to a vaccine yet. I place the blame for this squarely on Premier Moe for not taking into account our low vaccination rate when he decided to open things back up for the summer, sending us back to square one. But maybe there is one bright spot. Vaccination rates had dropped like a rock the day restrictions were lifted, as people falsely felt that we had finally turned a corner. But recently vaccination rates have picked back up, the majority of which are first time shots going into previously hesitant peoples arms. Nothing like the loss of friend or family to motivate you to accept reality. At some point we will see these first timers return for their second dose. It is hard to imagine that they would overcome their fear, or finally dismiss conspiracies or disinformation, only to return the dark side and not get fully protected. But this is not the 2-step process that I wish to discuss. The first step is to get fully vaccinated, true, but it is no longer enough. The second step is to take responsibility for what vaccine hesitancy has caused for the past year.
By having resisted vaccination, for whatever reason, you have unwittingly, or intentionally, fueled a movement that has spiraled down a dangerous path to the point where hospitals and doctors are getting harassed, school board members get attacked and retail service people get killed for asking customers to abide by the public health measures. Yes.... you helped create this monster. You may simply have a fear of needles, or maybe misplaced individual freedoms ideals had you convinced that this was the hill you were willing to die on... it really doesn’t matter. What matters is what you do next. If you were just afraid of needles, you need to find 10 other people who also are afraid and help them get past it, just like you did. If you were a victim of misinformation from family or friends, you need to find 10 of them who previously trusted and agreed with you and take them to get the jab. Only you can reach them. If you were one of those who went down a Q-Anon rabbit hole, and finally pulled your head out of your butt, welcome back, But be careful... your ex-comrades may turn on you, just as they have begun to do to our doctors, teachers and business owners. Meanwhile, enjoy yet another, preventable, unnecessary shut-down. Ken Sowter - Editor

The Birthday Princess
here’s a couple of little girls, sisters, who live at the end of our street. The youngest one is about 5 years old and the other about 9. I go past their house whenever I walk The Dog. They are very friendly and cheerful little girls, when they see me they always call and wave and come to pet The Dog. A few days ago, when I walked by the youngest girl was out on the porch and came running over, all smiles and dimples and sunshine. Olivia is her name. But she was wearing a tiara, a small crown, that day so I said "Hello, Princess Olivia" and bowed. She put her hand up to her mouth and giggled through her fingers. I asked her why she was being a princess and she said her birthday was coming up in a few days and she was practicing to be The Birthday Princess - she was going to be 5. And she held up her hand with her fingers spread so I could see how much 5 was. I congratulated her and wished her a very happy, happy birthday. We talked for a few minutes about the birthday party she was going to have and the cake her mom was going to make and all her friends who were coming and all the games they were going to play. Then I told her my mother-in-law, Grandma Barbara, was also having a birthday in the next week, and that she too was going to be a birthday princess. Princess Olivia asked, "How old is she going to be?" I said, "Well, you know, Grandma Barbara is going to be 95." And Princess Olivia's eyes widened but then quickly narrowed as she looked at me suspiciously and said "95 - did she start at one?" I said that, well, I sort of thought so but would check with Grandma Barbara to make sure.
Now Princess Olivia has travelled all over Europe – her mother was born in France - but she has never been to Saskatchewan so I was telling her about what a wonderful place it is. I told her Saskatchewan has a sky that is the biggest thing you've ever seen and at night there are more stars than there is black - more than a gazillion stars. Princess Olivia asked, "How many is a gazillion - is it more than 95?" And I said that, well, I sort of thought it was but would check that with Grandma Barbara, too. Then I told her that the best thing about Saskatchewan, the very best thing, was all the nice people - there are a lot of really nice people in Saskatchewan. (That would be all you folk who are reading this and even some of you who aren't.) I said, "And Grandma Barbara is the nicest of all those nice people." Princess Olivia said "Oh, she must be a very nice princess, then." "Oh, yes", I said, "you have to be very nice before you can be a princess that's why princess has the word nice mixed right into it - and that's why you are a princess, too." Princess Olivia giggled again. Then Olivia’s mother called her to come in for supper and she had to go. I said "Goodbye Princess Olivia, Happy Birthday" and bowed again and she ran back to the house, leaving a trail of giggles hanging in the air behind her. A few days later, when I saw Grandma Barbara, I asked her if indeed she got to be 95 by starting at 1. Grandma Barbara said she was a little hazy on that kind of detail, it being so long ago, but she assumed so. I also asked Grandma Barbara if a gazillion was more than 95 and she sighed and said that some days they just sort of felt the same. PS - Happy Birthday, Grandma Barbara - September 2021

Letters to the Editor Strong Government ?
I
recall when a very popular premier passed the torch so a new premier could carry it.
He said, remember the people you represent. Be willing to change for the common good and be humble enough to admit when you were wrong. None of that advice has been heard. In its place we have a government without conscience. For the common good has become the illusion of presenting unwavering strength upon words having been said. Not whether those spoken words represented the common good or not but those words represent the illusion of Strong Government.
A
As professionals plead for action for the common good, the advice goes unheard preferring instead that illusion of Strong Government. There is a phrase often used to justify action taken. It is “ You Reap what you Sew”. There will be an opportunity to share our view in due time. Hopefully the voices will still be there because they will be needed more than ever. When it comes time to pass the torch the message has to be clear. We stand for compassion and have conscience. Strong leadership will recognize these values and act on the best interests of the people. Greg Edel Vanscoy

VILLAGE OF VANSCOY
T
he Community Festival was well attended – the day started off with the RCMP leading the Kids Bike Parade with 37 decorated bikes and kids. Huge shout out to the RCMP for attending! The free BBQ lunch sponsored by the Village of Vanscoy and the Vanscoy Rec Board served over 200 hot dogs, chips and pop. The Show and Shine sponsored by the Vanscoy Hotel was a big hit; with 46 cars registered. Plans for next year are being talked about, probably being held earlier in the year. The Rec Board AGM will be held Wednesday October 20 at the Circle Hall. Further details to follow, depending on the Public Health regulations at that time. Check the Village of Vanscoy Facebook page for updates on that meeting. Reminders to residents who are renovating their property – dumping of concrete and other materials on Village property is not acceptable. That is not the Village responsibility to remove your garbage or waste. We would also like to remind residents who are making payments online – your payments should be made a few days prior to month end; as some banks take longer to forward payments to the Village and the payments are not arriving until after deadlines are due.

Back to School Safety Tips Pike Lake Fire & Rescue - Home Safety Tip #9
As kids head back to school its important to remember and share with your children some key tips that will help keep them safe and healthy throughout the school year with some transportation safety tips Walkers… • When walking to school, walk on the sidewalk if one is available. When on a street with no sidewalk walk facing traffic. • Before you cross the street, stop and look left, right and left again to see if cars are coming. • Make eye contact with drivers before crossing and always cross streets at crosswalks or intersections. • Stay alert and don’t get distracted. Bike Riders… • Ride on the right side of the road, with traffic, and in a single file. • Come to a complete stop before crossing the street, walk bikes across the street. • Stay alert and don’t get distracted.
Bus Riders… • If possible, go to the bus stop with your child to teach them the proper way to get on and off the bus. • Teach your children to stand 6 feet (3 giant steps) away from the curb. • Always obey and follow instructions of your bus driver. Driving Your Child to School… • Stay alert and avoid distracted driving, obey school zone speed limits and follow your school’s drop off procedure. • Make eye contact with children who are crossing the street. • Never pass a bus loading or unloading children. • The area 10 feet around a school bus is the most dangerous for children, stop far enough back to allow them to safely enter and exit the bus. Until next time stay Safe and stay Healthy!
