ON LINE VERSION
Every
For
a large part of my adult life, it has been a very close call as to where I get less respect at home or at the office
You remember that old Aretha song "R E S P E C T"? Well, that song wasn't written with me in mind
However, in the latter years of my life, close to retirement, I made a remarkable discovery
Often times on the way home from work I would have to stop off and perform grocery shopping duties
On those occasions I performed the grocery shopping in "guerrilla" fashion I would make a quick incursion into the store, preferably without a shopping basket and definitely without a shopping cart, and quickly load up with 10 or less items so I could use the express lane thereby minimizing my time within the store
In and out, that was the objective
However, this objective was sometimes short circuited when I was unable to find a particular item and would have to spend frustrating minutes wandering up and down the aisles, hunting the item down
One day I was standing in front of a shelf full of a bewildering array of tins, my usual befuddled self, unable to find what was turning out to be an extremely elusive item While I was standing there, scratching my head, a grocery clerk approached me and said, "Can I help you, sir?" I took a quick glance around and noticed there was nobody else in the vicinity I realized he was speaking to me and he was calling me "sir"
The clerk very quickly found what I was looking for and asked me if there was anything else he could help me with Even though there were a few items yet to be tracked down, I was still in shock at being called "sir", and so just said, "No, but thank you very much " and he left I stood there for a few minutes trying to process what had just happened I was spoken to respectfully and realized that I liked it
So, I stood there for a few more moments, having a "brainiac" moment and coming up with an excellent plan Trying to camouflage my intentions, I nonchalantly meandered over to another aisle that was empty of other shoppers and just stood there, feigning a look of bewilderment and confusion, not an overly difficult task After a few minutes a store clerk, a different one, again approached me and again asked "Can I help you, sir?"
And yes, he was addressing me as "sir" speaking to me courteously and respectfully
Wow surprise and delight again infused my being
I figured two occasions of respectful address were sufficient to the moment, I didn't want to over do a good thing, and so I paid for my purchases and left the store
But I left with the resolve to return again soon
I found myself returning to that store more and more often over the next number of years a lot of the time my visits were not because I needed to buy anything in particular but just to get that unusual and wonderful dose of respectful address
After I retired and moved to Victoria, I knew I was going to miss that grocery store it was still the only place I got any respect
But I thought the loss of the respect that I had been getting at the grocery store would be offset by not being at the office anymore, leaving me only to deal with the lack of respect I was getting on the home front
I thought this would be more manageable (though my teen age son did his darndest to make up for the office reprieve) But as the teen ager would be soon leaving the nest like his older sister already had, I thought I could look forward to a much reduced level of disrespect in the not so distant future
(Notice that I say a reduced level of disrespect, not a zero level there is still Mrs B, you see )
What I hadn't included in my fantasy musings though, was that Victoria is a Canadian naval base there are lots of armed forces personnel living and working here And those folks have been trained, disciplined, to address people as "Sir" or "Ma'am"
On one of my first visits to a store, and not even a grocery store, a young man held the door open for me and when I said thank you, he said "You're welcome, sir"
I was in The Promised Land
I was soon to learn, however, that even The Promised Land is not without its blighted areas in need of remediation
I was talking to an old, retired navy guy, an enlisted fellow who had spent his entire career in the lower echelons of rank and who, it appears, was definitely not a fan of officers He was quite indignant when I addressed him as "sir"
"I'm not a "sir", he said, "My parents were married "
Hmm

Ghosting, Not Hearing Back is Your Answer
By Nick Kossovan
Back in the day, maybe still today, at the end of an audition, Hollywood producers would say, "Don't call us; we'll call you "
If you did not hear back, you did not get the gig
Not hearing back was your answer
Maybe hiring managers should end their interviews with, "If you don't hear from us by Friday, presume we've moved on to other candidates "
I would much prefer to know the interviewer's communication context rather than assuming I will hear back either way or worse, being told I will hear back in a few days and not hearing anything
The term ghosting not hearing back from the company after an interview was born in the dating world Recruiters, hiring managers, and candidates are increas ingly abruptly ending communication (Ghosting is happening both ways )
Even though ghosting is considered "unprofessional," I believe it will eventually be integrated into our social norms, just as many other social norms we accept today were considered unacceptable just a few years ago
Think about all that we accept or tolerate today that were not accepted or tolerated 20 years ago I cannot recall the last time I wore a tie to an interview, funeral, as a keynote speaker, or meeting with "the powers that be " Visible tattoos are no longer frowned upon, and the usage of profanity does not raise eyebrows Today, manners are less pronounced, and people are more prone to being offended, causing everyone to walk around on eggshells, which is why ghosting is increasing
Additionally, a sense of entitlement is prevalent today Many candidates raised on the idea that "everyone is a winner" react negatively when not chosen Due to hav ing been verbally bitten several times, it is understandable that employers avoid reaching out to rejected candidates More than one hiring manager has said to me, "It's easier to not have the conversation than to have it "
For better or worse, I will let you decide
It cannot be expected that the downgrading (READ: becoming more casual) of our social mannerisms would not find its way into the workplace The 20 or 30 some thing HR manager has an entirely different set of values and definition of what it means to be a professional than the 53 year old job seeker Generational clashes are happening
Hiring managers are swamped with applications Replying to everyone, aside from an automated "We've received your application and will contact you if we feel there's a match," would take more time than they have Technology is one of the reasons recruitment is becoming increasingly discourteous

Here is some straightforward talk: Nobody wants to spend their lifeblood on some one else's business A person has a job to make a living For most people, their job is purely transactional Having a transactional mindset is why movements such as "quiet quitting" and the "F I R E movement" (Financial Independence, Retire Early), where Gen Z adults extreme save 50% to 75% of their income so they can re tire by their 40s or 50s, exist Therefore, it should not be a surprise that social niceties are being dropped as employers and employees are rapidly moving towards a relationship where each party views the other as a means to an end
Like every job seeker, I have been ghosted Since I tend to keep my expectations low, sometimes having none, being ghosted has never really bothered me I am seri ous! I do not feel a recruiter or hiring manager owes me a reply after an interview When I get a follow up call, which I usually do, it is nice, but it is not something I expect I attribute my assumption that no one owes me, coupled with my belief that business is never personal, to why I am motivated to energetically help myself I be lieve having the expectation of "I’m owed" is why many job seekers are frustrated with how employers design their hiring process
Most of your job search will involve dealing with strangers who, as a truism, owe you nothing A fact of life: You cannot control someone's behaviour or actions, espe cially that of a stranger Acknowledging this fact of life is how you "discipline your disappointment" when someone fails to meet your expectations
Always end your interviews knowing the next step and when to expect to hear back if you are green lighted to move forward in the hiring process ("I really enjoyed our conversation What is the next step, and when can I expect to hear back if I'm se lected to move forward?") Once I am told what to expect, I will say, "If I don't hear back from you by the end of Friday, I'll presume you've moved on to other candi dates "
If the get back to you deadline passes, reach out once and then let it go Some ad vice I learned in the job search trenches: Always have several pokers in the fire throughout your job search Do not become dependent on a particular employer of fering you a job Having other job opportunities in your pipeline will help you move on from being ghosted

Heartland Pony Club Finish a Successful Show Season
Theequestrian 2022 provincial champions for Saskatchewan Hunter Jumper Associa tion (SHJA) were awarded at Willow Ridge Equestrian Center on Sept 3 5
After a year or more of preparation for the riders, coaches and horses of Pelmac Stables, Heartland Pony Club, members challenged themselves among others to achieve their best performances yet!
In conjunction with the SHJA provincial finals, a series of Saskatchewan Horse Federation sanc tioned shows including Tally Ho Equestrian Development Shows, competitors of all ages and abilities completed their point accumulation at the final Tally Ho of the season
The Tally Ho show series feature Hunter, Jumper, Equitation, Hack and Pleasure classes that are held from May Sept Horse and riders entered in Jumpers’ classes focus on speed to completion of technically demanding course jumps, in contrast to riders and horses in Hunter classes that are allowed more time to complete a less demanding course that guide the horse on longer graceful lines of approach to the barriers

Wildlife on the Road
Pike Lake Fire Department Safety Tips
Growing up in Saskatchewan being on the lookout for deer and other animals while driving was just part of operating a vehicle Over the past five years there were 16,457 wildlife collision claims reported to SGI Encounters with wildlife on roadways are inevitable given the size and geography of our province, but you can still take precautions to help protect yourself
Be alert during May and June when animals are drawn to ditches for road salt and escape biting in sects They are also especially active in the late fall and early winter during mating season Peak times are dawn and dusk
• Pay attention to wildlife Signs Remain alert and lower your speed
• Scan ahead Watch for movement and shining eyes along the roadsides
Use your high beams to see further ahead if there is no oncoming traffic
• If you see a deer, slow down! Chances are there are others close by
Experts advise not to swerve Instinct is to swerve but you can cause more damage if you change direc tion This is especially true if there is oncoming traffic
Stay safe and healthy ! If you have any questions or would like more info contact:

AGRICULTURE REPORTS
René Drolet Consulting Services to spearhead the ‘Road to 2050’ initiative
September 22, 2022 (Ottawa, ON) The Grain Growers of Canada (GGC) are pleased to announce that René Drolet Consulting Services has been se lected as the lead in developing a path forward for the “Road to 2050,” a climate solutions initiative to help meet Canada’s ambitious goal of net zero emissions by 2050
“I am excited to be part of the development of a Roadmap to net zero for Canada’s Grain Sector,” said René Drolet, who will serve as the principal consult ant “All sectors of the economy must contribute to Canada’s efforts to achieve net zero by 2050 By launching this initiative, grain producers have demon strated that they are committed to doing their part ”
“The Grain Growers of Canada could not be more pleased to work with René Drolet on this path to 2050,” added Andre Harpe, chair of the Grain Growers of Canada “The agriculture sector is complex, and con tinued innovation is critical if we want to achieve sec

tor wide success We are confident that René and his team have the unique skills and the impressive range of expertise and experience necessary to meet the chal lenge of developing a path to net zero emissions that considers the challenges and opportunities within our sector ”
Drolet will lead a team of four consultants with unpar alleled expertise and experience in environmental and economic policy development Through his work as a consultant with the Cement Association of Canada and as Director of Policy and Research for the Na tional Roundtable on the Environment and the Econ omy (NRTEE), Drolet has extensive experience with the development of environmental and climate policies and programs and is well versed in the issues facing industry associations “The agriculture sector is often criticized compared to other areas of the economy, ” Drolet explained “But agriculture differs from large industrial emitters, and this roadmap will help build awareness of the sector
Agricultural sources of emissions are numerous and somewhat diffuse compared to heavy industry, and the solutions may exist on site This roadmap will take
stock of GHG emission sources and identify potential solutions to reduce emissions and facilitate carbon se questration
The roadmap will reflect the work farmers have done and can sustainably do in the future Serving as a guide for government policies and programs directed at Canada's grains sector, the roadmap will prioritize innovation, research and best management practices to boost productivity while continuing to enhance soil quality, improve carbon sequestration potential and reduce emissions Building off farmers' stewardship practices will safeguard economic competitiveness and better position farmers to capitalize on this historic op portunity
“Given the nature of the sector, the roadmap to net zero will not be straightforward and will require inno vative ways of doing business,” adds Drolet “The main challenge, which makes this so exciting, will be to de velop feasible and effective pathways to reduce the sector's overall carbon footprint Many factors, such as geographic location, type of soils and the size of farms, will need to be considered to ensure the roadmap is in clusive, credible, practical, and achievable ”
