Wildfire Burns Farmland at Delisle

Four Departments Battle Delisle Blaze

O

n the afternoon of September 1st, fire crews from Delisle, Asquith, Montrose and Pike Lake responded to a report of a wildfire north-west of Delisle. High winds pushed the fire south-east at a rapid pace for many miles, coming with-in a mile of Delisle and Highway 7. Crews were aided by local farmers and members of Hutterite colonies, plus RM employees who worked quickly, breaking up land to create fire breaks to contain the blaze and also provided water to the scene. No injuries were reported and amazingly no building or equipment were damaged.

Letter to the Editor

ural women have turned their mind to how they are going to manage in the fall. Many will still be working from home or on the farm when school starts. The back to school plan is children in underfunded, crowded classrooms. There are ongoing discussions about childcare centres and afterschool programs not operating this year. For those with family members vulnerable to COVID-19, this may mean a continuation of homeschooling. This has major impacts on rural women because the added responsibility of caring for children often falls to them, so they are going to have to figure out how to make this work. It is beyond stressful. For many rural women the pandemic has brought into focus why quality affordable childcare in rural areas is needed. Access to childcare is critical for moms who work from home, drive a combine during harvest, and head off to jobs. Additionally, parents know this generation of children has been affected by the disruption to their education caused by the pandemic. Many women also care for vulnerable, disabled or elderly family members. Often families cannot access care for relatives due to a lack of local availability, space, regulation, appropriate staffing levels and the high cost. There are also families who have taken their loved ones out of care homes because of the risk posed by the coronavirus. Women know why it’s called the sandwich generation; it is mainly women who are

sandwiched between looking after the young and the old, all while trying to maintain their career. Employment figures show that most of the low waged workers who were laid off or lost their jobs due to the coronavirus pandemic were women in the service sector and health care. Statistics show that the face of poverty in Saskatchewan is largely female, and the pandemic will worsen and deepen their poverty. Women have never come close to achieving equal pay before Covid-19, and the pandemic will set them back even more. Women need a government that is prepared to carefully consider the needs of rural women and rural communities. Women need a government to recognize the unpaid work they perform. Women need a government that cares about early childhood education. Rural women, and rural communities, need high quality home care and long-term care. Women across the province, and particularly in rural communities have been let down by the Sask. Party government. But we can make a different choice this fall—a government that takes the challenges women are facing seriously, and works to address them. Let’s elect a NDP government that puts Saskatchewan people first. Brenda Edle, Vanscoy, SK, 2020 Candidate Rosetown-Elrose

The municipality has been applying for grants to assist in the upcoming expenditures for fire services regarding a new fire truck as well as expenditures for two upcoming road upgrades on the Ardath grid and Frontenac road east. The cost for these projects will be in excess of $500,000. Our operators have been busy with continuous grading due to dry conditions and mowing of all road allowances as well as Highway 45. The dry conditions have contributed to an increased presence of washboard on our roads. We ask that all motorists drive safely and be prepared for these conditions. The RM equipment and vehicles have priority on municipal road. For the SAFETY of yourself and our grader operators, please remember to slow down to 60 km while passing municipal equipment and vehicles on the road. Crews have also been working at clay capping throughout the month of July and August. Clay capping took place for a two-mile section on Range Road 3065 as well as two miles on Township Road 330. Crews will be completing a road upgrade on Range Road 3083 from TWP Rd 315 to TWP Rd 320 in the coming weeks. The municipal office is now once again open to the public. We continue to advise all who wish to attend the office to practice social distancing guidelines and encourage ratepayers to use the drop box located at the office. Carter Bothner It is with extreme sadness that the family of Carter George Bothner announce his passing on Sunday July 12, 2020 at the age of 12. Carter was born on February 12, 2008. He grew up in Yorkton until Grade 3, when he moved with his family to Pike Lake. He loved acreage life, quading, hunting and exploring the outdoors. He spent time riding his bike, swimming and playing. Carter was known for his bright coloured clothing and his speed whether it be on foot or on ice. He had a strong endurance which lead him to be an excellent long distance runner. Carter’s love of hockey and silliness in the change rooms lightened the mood for his teammates. Another sport he excelled in was soccer. He always tried his best, win or lose and was just

OBITUARIES as happy for others to succeed. He was a kind hearted boy with big brown eyes that seemed to sense what you were feeling and anyone who ever had a hug from Carter knew he left a piece of his heart with you. He did what he could to make others feel better. Little kids looked up to him and Carter made time to play with everyone. His ability to care for all things living was seen in the way he treated animals and his green thumb. Carter loved chickens, playing, sports, Pokemon – especially Pikachu. He had incredible building skills and an imagination that allowed him to improve things and make them simpler to use. At a very young age, Carter was building advanced Lego and often would rebuild the kits without instructions. He was starting to learn new skills and spent time helping his Grandpa Bernie build a new moveable chicken coup. He had an excellent work ethic. Carter’s awareness of wild and tame animals was incredible. His patience and skills allowed him to catch many wild animals with his bare hands. Frogs, Chickadees, baby pigeons, full grown gopher, prairie chicken, domestic chickens, wild cats, mice and

fish. Carter could pilot an atv better than some full grown adults could. Even at an early age his experience showed he knew how to read the trail. Carter liked kayaking after attending Canoe Camp. Within the first year of being at Pike Lake he got a kayak of his own and could be seen paddling around the creek. Carter enjoyed spending time with Grandpa Ed at the farm near Beechy. While in the Calgary hospital Carter liked when Ed came to visit and they spent a lot of time drawing together. Carter and Uncle Chris liked to spend time fishing. Uncle Curtiss and Samantha spent summers camping with Carter and Alexis. Carter was an independent kid who enjoyed helping in the kitchen, making Scotch eggs and his speciality on Frydays - homemade Carter Fries which quickly became his sister’s favourite. He made his own lunches for school by grade 2 and was a big help around the house. Carter had a quick wit and had some of the best sayings. His warm smile and laugh was contagious. When his baby sister, Bailey, joined the family in February Carter was so excited to be a Big

his past Sunday saw the Conservative Party of Canada elect a new leader. What an exciting day it was. I was honoured to participate in the results event, together with my colleague Randy Hoback representing Saskatchewan. As you are aware, Erin O'Toole was the successful candidate with a decisive victory. I would first like to congratulate him, his entire team and family on their successful campaign. My thanks also go out to all those who helped make this happen, including the other three candidates: Peter Mackay, Leslyn Lewis and Derek Sloan. All ran impressive campaigns and should be proud of the teams they built.

Two years ago PANS caused a significant change in Carter and started lengthy struggles in and out of hospital. Robbing him of his middle school experience. He was going to the US to continue treatments once COVID restrictions allowed travel. As a final act of giving, Carter was able to be an organ donor and help improve others lives. Carter will be loving remembered by his sisters, Alexis (age 10) and Bailey (age 6 months), parents Angela and Lyle, grandparents Bernie and Thea Howe, Ed and Charlotte Bothner; Uncles Chris Howe, Curtiss Bothner and Winston (Crissy) Bothner. As well as numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. A Celebration of Carter’s life was held at his family home August 12th. We asked those that wish to share memories and pictures of Carter to email them to ang_bot@hotmail.com. This book of stories will help Carter’s sisters remember him. The challenges of this pandemic led many, including in the media, to claim that the Conservative Party would not be able to run a serious national campaign. And yet, despite some delays, we ran the largest leadership race in Canadian history, with over 175,000 votes cast, and elected a new Leader of the Conservatives who found a way to speak to Canadians from coast to coast to coast.

Erin is a hard worker with great experience both inside and out of politics. He is a veteran who served our country with dedication long before he stood for election as a Member of Parliament. While there is much work to be done, I am sure that Erin is up to the task. I look forward to working with him to unite our country and ensure prosperity for all Canadians. Congratulations, Erin!

He was a certified farrier by trade, and worked in several western provinces as such throughout his fifty year career. He was known to bring home a horse in lieu of payment for his services. COMMUNITY REPORTS

Vanscoy & District Agricultural Society Seeking Community Opinions, Help from Woodworkers and Event Updates

F

all is here! With the cooler weather, the Vanscoy & District Agricultural Society has a couple new projects that we would love to have community support and feedback on. Early in July, the Cattle Shed in Vanscoy was demolished. Our group has been reviewing options for rebuilding but would appreciate some community feedback before we launch into planning. The following link will take you to our community survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Q5QCDST. You can visit our Facebook page to get access to this link as well. From this survey, we hope to gather opinions and possible usage rates for the previous structure type as well as thoughts and ideas for a possible future establishment. If you have any extra information, please feel free to add it in the appropriate areas on the survey or contact us at vanscoyag@gmail.com or (306) 493-3023. Our group would also like to attain some large wooden animal cut outs that we could use for display. If any woodworkers in the area are interested in making some for us, we would love to get in touch. We would also appreciate donations of plywood from local businesses. If possible, we would appreciate hav-

ing this project completed and ready for set up before the Christmas holiday. Anyone who has interest in the project or knows someone who might be able to help, please contact us by October 1st, 2020. The Vanscoy & District Agricultural Society will not be holding our annual Turkey Bingo this year. It is not possible for us to hold the event and maintain soAg Society cattle shed in Vanscoy was demolished in July cial distancing measures suggested by Public Health and planning for the event has been ceased. It is unfortunate to lose such an appreciated event, however, we do not want to put the safety of 150+ participants at risk. We hope that you and your family will be able to join us in 2021 to play bingo again. Our AGM will occur on December 2nd, 2020. At the moment, we do not have the details to share on how we will make this event safe and open to the public. Please, mark the date on your calendars as we would love to have you on our committee(s).
